in a first, the fda approves a pill to treat postpartum depression. and after two years away, olympic champion simone biles soars back into competitive gymnastics. >> whit: good evening. thanks for joining us on this saturday night. i'm whit johnson. we have several developing stories as we come on the air, but we begin tonight with the fallout from that massive and dangerous riot in new york city. the social media influencer now facing multiple charges, including inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. police say it all started after kai cenat told his millions of followers on the live-streaming platform twitch that he was giving away video game consoles and gift cards. within hours, union square park and nearby streets were flooded with teens. the crowd turning violent, clashing with police, tossing bottles and fireworks. today, new york city mayor eric adams blaming outside agitator for inflaming the chaos, but blasting parents, saying our children cannot get their values from social media. police reporting more than 60 people arrested, nearly half under the age of 18. abc's rena roy leads us off from union square. >> reporter: tonight, after hours of violent pandemonium, social media influencer kai cenat hit with three charges -- felony riot causing public injury or damage, inciting a riot, and unlawful assembly. thousands rushing to manhattan's union square creating chaos. >> $100 gift cards all here, bro. we going to go crazy for new york, man. >> reporter: after cenat told his millions of followers on live-streaming platform twitch friday that he would give away video game consoles and gift cards. >> children cannot get their values, their beliefs from social media. >> reporter: today, new york city mayor eric adams saying he believes outside agitators inflamed the situation. >> you don't come to get free gameboys and bring smoke bombs. >> we have fire extinguishers and paint being thrown by the crowd. >> reporter: people also hurling bottles, climbing onto subway entrances and statues, jumping on cars, and setting off fireworks. some even hanging onto this suv, several falling off. this uber driver's window completely smashed. he says police pulled him out of the car. >> they said leave everything, get the hell out of here. otherwise, they're gonna kill someone here today. >> reporter: the nypd says some officers were crushed, pushed, and hit with objects, dressed in riot gear as they struggled to control the massive crowd. authorities arresting more than 60 people. >> whit: rena roy joining us now from union square. a much different scene tonight. but, rena, what are authorities saying about whether this influencer actually had free merchandise to give out? and was there some way this could have all been avoided? >> reporter: a, nypd official tells us they do believe cenat was planning on handing out several playstation 5s. and police say a lot of this could have been avoided if he contacted city officials ahead of time. we contacted his team but haven't heard back. whit? >> whit: thank you. we're tracking a severe weather threat tonight. millions on alert from colorado to tennessee for flash flooding and damaging winds. and the scorching and unrelenting heat for more than 60 million americans from florida to california. overnight, dramatic water rescues after more than six inches of rain fell in parts of missouri. drone video capturing the scope of that damage from the flash flooding in missouri. let's get right to abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano. rob, where are the biggest trouble spots right now? >> reporter: whit, we have multiple watch boxes out this evening. we've already seen six reported tornados from colorado to iowa, where there's a tornado watch out right now. it also includes parts of nebraska and south dakota and minnesota. and we got a bad cluster now heading through indiana. tonight we'll see them refire across missouri, which got hit hard already today and also through parts of arkansas. then during the day tomorrow we'll reset the stage for severe weather from st. louis, across the heartland, paducah, louisville, parts of kentucky and tennessee might see more in the ways of tornado and damaging wind. the tops the heat that continues to expand. tomorrow heat indices over 110. dallas to little rock to jackson, mississippi, the southwest continues, but that heat in the south and southeast looks like it will hold at least through the middle part of the week. whit? >> whit: rob, thanks so much. new details tonight in the case of a california southern superior court judge accused of killing his wife. judge jeffrey ferguson arrested at the couple's home in the upscale neighborhood of anaheim hills. the 72-year-old was released from jail on friday on a $1 million bond. here's abc's jacqueline lee. >> reporter: tonight, after decades in the courtroom, a prominent california judge on the other side of the law, accused of shooting and killing his own wife. police say they responded to a 911 call late thursday at the upscale anaheim hills home of orange county superior court judge jeffrey ferguson. inside, authorities finding his 65-year-old wife shot dead and arresting him on suspicion of murder. sheryl ferguson seen with her husband in photos posted to facebook, wishing him a happy birthday. >> she was soft spoken, very nice. and i know just -- her son was her pride and joy. >> reporter: investigators carrying rifles and guns from the home and boxes labeled "ammo". tonight, ferguson's neighbors in shock. >> never in a million years would imagine that, especially a judge. i mean, that's the surprising part of it all. makes you really think about who your neighbors and everything is. >> reporter: we reached out to his attorney and have not heard back. the judge posted a $1 million bond on friday and was released. but the orange county district attorney's office saying he has not been charged because it's still to be determined which office, the d.a. or the state, will handle the prosecution. whit? >> whit: jacqueline lee with those new details tonight, thank you. turning now to a terrifying crash on an idaho highway after a summer camp school bus rolled over. about 30 campers and staff on board, at least seven critically injured. all the children on the bus who were between 13 and 18 years old taken to local hospitals as a precaution. investigators now looking into what caused the crash. abc's zohreen shah in boise, idaho, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, authorities investigating what caused this bus carrying children to overturn on an idaho highway. >> the school bus is turned over in both lanes of travel. possibly 30 injured. we have multiple units en route and multiple ambulances. >> reporter: the crash happening friday afternoon. around 30 teens and staff members on their way home from a ymca camp. maren ericson among those jumping in to help before first responders arrived. >> so many people passing out band-aids and gauze. many of the kids were having anxiety and panic attacks. and so i counted their breathing with them. >> reporter: police say 11 were hurt, 7 with critical injuries, but all of the children on board taken to area hospitals as a precaution. >> this particular incident, we saw a lot of fractures, so broken bones. scrapes and bumps, yes, but most of these children had lost consciousness, so we had to make sure they didn't have any brain injury. >> reporter: the damaged bus seen here as a tow truck removes it from the accident scene. the crash blocking one of the state's major north-south routes for hours. whit, the trauma surgeon tells us these kids will need time to heal from injuries and may need psychological counseling to deal with the emotional trauma of what happened. >> whit: we're thinking of the children tonight, zohreen, thank you. now to the justice department's warning shot to former president trump. two days after his arraignment on election fraud charges, federal prosecutors requesting a protective order limiting trump's comments on social media about the case. how the former president's team is responding tonight as trump hits the campaign trail again. abc's maryalice parks in columbia, south carolina. >> reporter: tonight, the justice department firing a warning shot against donald trump. judge tonya chutkan giving the former president a 5:00 p.m. monday deadline to respond to the special counsel's request for a protective order. at issue, trump's social media use. posting after his arraignment friday, if you go after me, i'm coming after you. prosecutors say they are concerned trump could disclose evidence, writing, if the defendant were to begin issuing public posts using details or, for example, grand jury transcripts, it could have a harmful, chilling effect on witnesses or adversely affect the fair administration of justice in this case. trump's team saying it was simply political speech. >> every time they file an indictment, we go way up in the polls. >> reporter: trump back on the campaign trail one day after pleading not guilty to charges he illegally attempted to stay in power after he lost the 2020 election. >> if he is in jail, hey, i think he could run the country in jail. >> he's innocent until he's proven guilty. they're going to have to prove that, and it's going to be hard to do. >> why didn't you uphold the constitution, sir? >> i upheld the constitution. >> reporter: trump's supporters heckling former vice president mike pence on the campaign trail for not going along with trump's scheme to stop the certification of the election. florida governor ron desantis looking ahead to 2025. >> kamala harris will certify. she's not going to have the opportunity to overrule what the american people say. i don't think that kamala harris has that authority. >> reporter: whit, on that possible protective order, trump has made it a habit to talk about these cases publicly and go after people like pence who could be a witness in this case. so, the big question now, is his campaign rhetoric starting to collide with the realities of being a criminal defendant? whit? >> whit: something to watch in the coming months. maryalice, thank you. and tune into "this week" tomorrow morning. george stephanopoulos interviews donald trump's attorney john lauro about the former president's legal defense for alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. now to the war in ukraine and the intensifying battle at sea. maritime drones striking a russian ship in the black sea for the second time in two days. video circulating online, allegedly showing the moment the oil tanker was hit. russian authorities blaming ukraine and vowing retaliation as peace talks get under way in saudi arabia. abc's ian pannell is in ukraine. >> reporter: tonight, another strike against a russian vessel in the black sea. video circulating online appearing to show a sea drone allegedly packed with a half-ton of explosives approaching a russian oil tanker. moscow blaming ukraine, threatening retaliation, saying the tanker had been supplying oil to russian troops in syria. ukraine not admitting it conducted the operation, but security sources telling abc news they did indeed carry out the strike. it follows a similar attack friday against a russian warship. more video circulating online showing the moment it was struck. after sun-up, the ship seen being towed back into base, listing seriously to one side. and tonight, a collection of videos verified by abc news now indicating that ukraine has started using u.s.-provided cluster munitions on the battlefield on the eastern front lines. the controversial weapons banned by many countries. and as the war grinds on, up to 40 nations are meeting in saudi arabia to discuss a possible peace plan for ukraine, but russia not invited. whit, china attending these peace talks for the first time with increased attacks in moscow and now the black sea, and remember that immunity six weeks ago. the war is now threatening instability in russia which of course is china's western neighbor and ally. whit?
