tonight. shocking new details from congressional leaders about former president trump's whereabouts during the january 6th attack on the capitol. the dramatic rescue caught on camera. the heart-pounding moment two skiers free a dog who got trapped in an avalanche. and "america strong." giving back to those small business workers hit hard by the pandemic. good evening, everyone. and happy new year. thanks so much for joining us on this sunday. i'm linsey davis. and as we head into a new week and a new year, many are contending with the same old concerns. as millions of americans are dodging bad weather, flight cancellations, and a record covid surge. today, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and more than 2,500 flights cancelled. it's a ripple effect of the winter storm moving across the country. but also a result of airline staff shortages linked to covid exposures. long lines for testing across the country. and for some, there are long waits for the test results. and home tests can be also difficult to find. a lot of uncertainty for those traveling tonight, and for the millions returning to work and school in the days ahead. dr. ashish jha joins us in a moment. but elwyn lopez leads us off. >> reporter: tonight, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year wrapping up with another day of mass cancellations. >> it's a long line, but what are you going to do. >> reporter: from coast to coast, 5 million passengers expected to hit the skies between today and tomorrow. >> i just want to get home. >> reporter: airports seeing more than 2,500 flights grounded. over 5,000 just this weekend. covid partially to blame, with an uptick in cases sparking staffing shortages. another major hit to operations -- that wintry weather from denver to chicago. >> we had a huge snowstorm. and, oh, my goodness, they cancelled the flight because they were scared that we wouldn't be able to take off. >> reporter: megan dillman managed to book another flight to atlanta for an event but is now worried about getting back home to chicago. >> well, i'm hoping that it doesn't get cancelled. because i'm not sure what i'm gonna do. >> reporter: steven chaney tells me he's spent more than seven hours at the airport. >> i showed you all of my cancellations i've been dealing with all morning long trying to get there. >> reporter: he says he is desperately trying to get to portland, oregon, to bury his first-born son. >> i haven't been to sleep at all since i got the news. but i'm going to get there some way, somehow. i don't know. but i'm trusting and believing that i will. yeah, i just got to keep it together. that's all. >> heartbreaking story there. elwyn, i know you've just learned steven was finally able to get on a flight. some good news for him. but it sounds like the problems are expected to continue well into the week. >> reporter: that's right. cancellations are piling up across the country for tomorrow, with more than 800 flights grounded already. linsey? >> elwyn, thank you. and as americans get back to work and school, and with covid cases once again at an all-time high, dr. anthony fauci says the cdc may recommend people who had symptoms get a negative test before ending isolation. and as schools start up again, covid related staffing issues could leave them shorthanded. secretary of education miguel cardona warns there will be bumps in the road tomorrow. dr. jha will weigh in, in just a moment. but first, here's phil lipof. >> reporter: tonight, after sharp criticism, dr. anthony fauci says the cdc is now looking at recommending that an asymptomatic person get a negative covid test before ending isolation. >> there has been some concern about why we don't ask people after that five-day period to get tested. that is something that is now under consideration. >> reporter: last week, the cdc shortening the isolation period for those testing positive from ten days to five, as long as any symptoms are improving and they don't have a fever. and they must wear masks around others for an additional five days. >> the cdc is very well aware that there has been some pushback about that. looking at it again, there may be an option in that, that testing could be a part of that. >> reporter: dr. fauci saying the u.s. is now seeing an average of nearly 400,000 new daily cases. nationwide, hospitalizations approaching 100,000. in central texas, one hospital is seeing an increasing number of children fighting covid, concerning doctors. >> our pediatric infectious disease experts are seeing kids that have long haul covid symptoms and can have other issues secondary to covid, even weeks later. >> reporter: but a glimmer of hope from the uk, where the health security agency finds people infected with omicron there have reduced risk of covid-19 related hospitalization compared to those infected with delta. and as children across the country get ready to head back to school, education secretary miguel cardona warning of a possible tough week ahead. >> superintendents today are getting phone calls learning that some of their schools may have 5% to 10% of their staff not available due to covid-19. >> reporter: tonight, local administrators facing tough decisions on how to reopen, closures, remote options, testing to stay, all varying from district to district. the new mayor of new york city telling our george stephanopoulos that classrooms will be open tomorrow with increased testing for all students. >> what do you say to those parents who fear sending their children back? >> i say to them, fear not sending them back. the stats are clear. the safest place for children is inside a school. we've lost almost two years of education. george, we can't do it again. >> reporter: however, dozens of colleges from coast to coast not as confident, opting for virtual learning. some requiring testing, proof of vaccination, or boosters before returning to campus. and with hours to go before the return of school, parents are split. in ohio, kynslee pearrell is worried about the rapid spread of omicron, even though her family is vaccinated. >> quite honestly, i'll likely keep our son home until the 5th just to have those extra days, just in case. >> reporter: but in chicago, this mom says she's done everything she can to protect her two children, and is sending them back to school. >> we've chosen to vaccinate our children. we're sending them in there armed with a vaccine. we're sending them in there with surgical masks. i feel very safe about that. >> reporter: one of the nation's largest testing companies, quest diagnostics, tells abc that the need for testing right now is so great, the turnaround time to get your results has gone from one day to on average two to three days. which means many americans may be waiting even longer than that. linsey? >> those testing companies being put to the test themselves. phil, thank you. and we know many of you at home have so many questions. so let's bring in dr. ashish jha. dean of the brown university school of public health. i want to get right to the news from dr. fauci about a potential reversal from the cdc that would require asymptomatic people to test negative before ending their isolation. do you think that's the right decision? >> thanks for having me back. yes, i've been saying for some time now that having one or two negative antigen tests should add a lot of confidence that someone is no longer contagious. so we'll see what the cdc does, but do i think it would be a welcome addition. >> and with omicron cases at record highs and parents sending their kids back to school tomorrow, is it safe for schools to reopen for in-person learning? >> yeah, i do think it is. my kids are going back to school tomorrow. i think it's safe for them to do so. there's a lot that schools can do to keep infection numbers lower, with masks, improved ventilation, vaccination. these are the kinds of things that can keep spread low in schools. >> we know tests are hard to find right now in so many areas. what are the key symptoms to be aware of with omicron? >> yeah, i know getting a test right now can be very difficult for a lot of people. but what we're hearing and seeing is very much upper respiratory symptoms. a really sore throat, cough, congestion. if you have those, and you can't get a test, you should isolate until you are able to get that test. i think that's really important. >> dr. jha, thank you. next tonight, the major blast
