booster? dr. jha standing by to answer your questions tonight. also developing late today, house lawmakers including nine republicans voting to recommend criminal contempt charges against steve bannon for refusing to show up to answer questions about what led to the january 6th attack on the capitol. and the audio, what bannon told his listeners just one day before the attack. jon karl standing by. also at this hour, the news just coming in tonight on queen elizabeth, spending the night in a hospital. we'll go live to london. the americans kidnapped in haiti, held for days now. and tonight, the chilling threat from the gang leader. the video on social media. the demands. and why authorities are studying this video message. authorities late today in california on three members of a family dying after a hike. their dog dying, too, and now we learn how they died. the findings revealed. the storms in the west. several days oherods snow on. and then nt tonight with the new outlook for winter across this country. and spirit day, america strong. good evening and it's great to have you with us here on a thursday night and we are following several developing stories as we come on the air tonight. the cdc a short time ago on boosters. there is news tonight on queen elizabeth spending the night in the hospital. but we do begin this evening with news just coming in moments ago from the fbi. they now say the human remains found in a florida nature reserve are those of brian laundrie. that confirmation tonight from the fbi after this month-long search now for brian laundrie. much of it centered on the difficult swampy terrain in florida. not far from his family home. all of it, of course, in the case of gabby petito. e scernd more than 24 hos backpack and notebook and what were believe remains. the county medical examiner was called to the scene immediately. it was laundrie's parents who led authorities along the trail where his remains were found and their attorney tonight clarifying the timeline of this discovery. and tonight, the petito and laundrie families both reacting to this news from the fbi. abc's trevor ault leading us off from florida tonight. >> reporter: tonight, authorities confirming the remains discovered in florida's carlton nature reserve are those of gabby petito's boyfriend, brian laundrie. the north port police department saying those remains are skeletal, and the fbi making the confirmation using a comparison of dental records. the grim discovery made off a nature trail alongside laundrie's backpack and notebook, found a month after his disappearance in an area previously under water. >> these are very, very difficult conditions. i mean, you're searching in areas that you just can't walk up and look. these areas are huge and they're covered by water. >> reporter: the announcement marks the end of a nationwide manhunt for laundrie, still the only named person of interest in petito's murder, after he returned home from their cross-country road trip without her. and now sparking further questions, the fact his parents led authorities along the trail wednesday where the remains were found. >> this is an area that we initially notified the fbi that brian liked to hike in. >> reporter: their attorney now clarifying the timeline, telling cnn any suggestion the laundries planted those personal items is "hogwash." saying wednesday chris laundrie found a bag belonging to brian off one side of the trail, but law enforcement located brian's backpack and then the remains. >> at that point, the laundries were notified that there was also remains near the backpack and they were asked to leave the preserve. >> reporter: now, an autopsy will determine brian laundrie's cause of death and david, his parents' attorney says the family is asking for privacy and the attorney for gabby petito's family says they are not giving any interviews or statements right now, because they are grieving the loss of their daughter. david? >> trevor ault leading us off with the news from the fbi tonight. trevor, thank you. now to the other major news just before we came on tonight. the cdc on booster shots, clearing another major hurdle at this hour. late today, an independent cdc advisory panel voting unanimously to recommend boosters from moderna and johnson & johnson now. boosters for all three vaccines now in this country. and the panel also paving the way to allow mixing and matching when getting your booster. tonight, only one step left, cdc director dr. rochelle walensky must sign off. every indication that she will and quickly. and that means millions of americans could be getting their boosters by this weekend. dr. ashish jha standing by to answer your questions in a moment. we'll ask him about mixing and matching. but first, whit johnson here and what this key cdc panel just decided. >> reporter: tonight, those long awaited recommendations for moderna and johnson & johnson booster shots, along with guidance forxing and matching boters. >> vote number one passes with 15 yeses and 0 nos. >> reporter: for people who got today voting unanimously to oos least six months after vaccination for people over 65 and any adult whose health or work puts them at higher risk. and for the 15 millipients, a sd dose recommended at least two months after vaccination for anyone over 18. the panel also allowing americans to have flexibility to choose a different vra bne nd >> well, i think we've gotten more clarity because it's leveling the playing field across all three vaccines. now there's an openness to boosting no matter what vaccine you got, but there's still some confusion. >> reporter: so many have been looking for guidance on booster shots. >> i would like to talk to my doctor, just to get -- just to be informed. >> reporter: the recommendations quin got the johnson & johnson shot, after a limited study suggested they might benefit more from an mrna booster, meaning pfizer or shot, antibodies rose four fold. but a booster with pfizer sent those antibodies up 35 fold. and with a moderna boost, they jumped 76 fold. still, no idence yet that mixing leads to greater long in chicago, nathan bean got the j&j one-shot and experienced a breakthrough infection four months later. >> night two of coronavirus. >> reporter: after talking with getting a moderna boos precaution before seeing his mother, who is immunocompromised. >> i was excited to be able to get this moderna shot. we're going to be able to celebrate christmas and just celebrate being with each other for the first time in 2 1/2 years. >> whit johnson back with us here tonight, and whit, with the sign-o the cdc director, then how soon could we see these boosters roll out across the country? >> goodh more protection do yovi yes, thanks for having me back. the boosters are really helpful. while the vaccines are working well in preventing severe infections, we are seeing breakthroughs and we see very clear evidence now that boosters, especially for high risk individuals, make an enormous difference in those infections. >> i wanted to ask you about this small study we've been reporting on here this week involving the johnson & johnson one-shot vaccine. this particular study shows that mixing and matching with an mrna vaccine, pfizer or moderna, one of their boosters, and that the study actually saw significant results. do you suggest considering this?
