crushed. no one was hurt at this particular home. but as i mentioned, reports of deaths and multiple injuries elsewhere. and take a look at the radar at this hour. the severe weather zone stretching across the gulf coast and the south, right up to indiana and illinois tonight. authorities are warning of a dangerous night ahead. the scene left behind in birmingham already, devastating. abc's chief meteorologist ginger zee leading us off, she's in birmingham tonight. >> reporter: tonight, deadly tornadoes slamming the southeast. multiple people injured in alabama and at least five dead in calhoun county. one of the main monster tornadoes ripping across the densely populated south side of birmingham. >> understand this is a very dangerous situation, and the weather service in birmingham is now calling this a tornado emergency. >> reporter: in pelham, the twister flinging debris into the air. >> this is a large, violent tornado that is down. >> reporter: first responders racing to help those trapped. these are those raw moments where we show up and this tornado just went through. the fire and police just got the folks who were in this home out. they are alive. they went to the hospital. but there are homes with their roofs off, there are homes collapsed and this is just one of the neighborhoods that was impacted. the folks sent to the hospital back at the scene. mary rose talking to us after she and her husband were pulled from their basement. your spirits are pretty great after just coming from the hospital after being trapped in your home. >> i'm not worried about live on the scene in alabama tonight. and i know you have damage behind you and all around. and also that this is far from over. show us what you're seeing. >> reporter: yeah, david, walk up the steps. this used to be a front door and this is a home that collapsed on top of mary rose and larry dearmen. we actually just met them. they got out of the hospital. that was a ladder their neighbor brought over and had them climb out of that collapsed basement. it is one of 32 homes that is destroyed or heavily damaged in this neighborhood alone. and no, the threat's not over. not even close. going to be staying there through the nighttime hours. stay safe there with the team and we'll be looking for the latest tomorrow on "good morning america." ginger, thank you. in the meantime, we're going to move on now to the other major news this thursday night. president biden holding that first formal news conference, as he pointed out, on day 65 of his administration. he began by noting his new goal, instead of 100 million shots in arms in the first 100 days, now 200 million shots of the covid vaccines and he said it's ambitious, but that he believes we can do it. but the situation at the southern border quickly took center stage. the president said, this is not happening because he's now the president, because he's a good guy, he says previous administrations have seen this, too, and particularly this time of year, when conditions on that dangerous trek are a little bit better. he pointed to violence back home, crumbling economies, hurricanes and earthquakes. but his own secretary of homeland security has said before that what we're seeing now is the worst surge in 20 years. the president acknowledging to our cecilia vega the situation inside some facilities is unacceptable. and his new pledge tonight. he also addressed the mass shootings in this country, two in less than a week, and what he wants congress to do. on several of the key issues, he said, we're going to get a lot done, and he warned if republicans in the senate continue, in his words, to use the filibuster to block solutions, if there's a complete lockdown, he said, as a consequence of the filibuster, then we'll have to go beyond. our chief white house correspondent cecilia vega asking the president about those conditions that we've seen in those facilities, migrant children here in the u.s. >> reporter: 65 days into his administration, president biden walking out to face reporters for his first press conference, and it was the emergency at the southern border now threatening to overshadow his agenda that dominated. the questions striking a nerve. the customs and border protection facility in donna, texas, i was there, is at 1556% capacity -- >> yep. >> reporter: -- right now with mostly unaccompanied minors. there are kids that are sleeping on floors. they are packed into these pods. what is your reaction to these images that have come out from that particular facility? is what's happening inside acceptable to you? >> that's a serious question, right? is it acceptable to me? come on. that's why we're going to be moving a thousand of those kids out quickly. that is totally unacceptable. >> reporter: tonight, there are some 16,000 unaccompanied migrant children now in u.s. custody, a near record. we spoke to migrants at the border, like 9-year-old yossell, who made the long journey from honduras without his parents. the phone number for his grandfather in north carolina written on that pink hat. this is his grandfather's phone number. many of those migrants said they made that dangerous journey north because they believed it would be easier now. sir, you blamed the last administration, but is your messaging in saying that these children are and will be allowed to stay in this country and work their way through this process encouraging families like yossell's to come? >> the idea that i'm going to say -- which i would never do -- that if an unaccompanied child ends up at the border, we're just going to let him starve to death and stay on the other side -- no previous administration did that, either, except trump. i'm not going to do it. i'm not going to do it. >> reporter: the other urgent crisis -- those two mass shootings in the span of a week. 18 lives lost. but facing the political reality that with a 50/50 split in the senate, his party does not have the votes to pass sweeping gun control legislation, the president issuing this warning to republicans, signaling he could back changing rules in the senate to push his agenda through. >> we're going to get a lot done. and if we have to, if there's complete lockdown and chaos as a consequence of the filibuster, then we'll have to go beyond what i'm talking about. >> so, let's get to cecilia vega with us tonight from the white house. cecilia, we all heard you ask the president about what you saw first-hand from the border, let's show everyone at home again that moment. the 9-year-old boy that you met, the mother who said she sent her child because of new hope with a new administration. we heard the president say what a desperate act that is for a mother to send her child alone on that journey, he said it simply proves his argument that the u.s. must help in those northern triangle countries, if we ever want to stem the flow of migrants to the u.s. that's a long-term effort. in the short-term, though, s cecilia, he was pressed in that room on transparency in those facilities here in the u.s. >> reporter: yeah, and david, the president said that he is committed to giving journalists access to these overcrowded facilities that we have been talking about for so long now, because we have been denied access repeatedly. he did not give a time frame for when that will happen. the president said today also, they are working to more quickly reunite those families using those phone numbers so many of those children have on them, like the ones that we saw. he seemed to suggest that if that doesn't get fixed soon, people will be losing their jobs. but david, i can tell you, we spoke to that little boy's grandfather today, he has received a phone call from authorities, he is now trying to figure out how to reunite with his grandson. >> all right, cecilia vega at the white house with a very interesting development on that front. thank you for that. president biden also making news tonight on north korea, after what we learned last night while we were on the air here, north korea firing two ballistic missiles. north korea state media just tonight releasing these new images. crtainly a provocation and a challenge to the biden administration. let's get right to abc's chief foreign affairs correspondent martha raddatz tonight, on the air with me this afternoon as we were listening to that formal news conference. martha, the president was asked, what's your red line on north crkor korea? >> reporter: he did not answer whether there was a red line with north korea, david. the president did say the north violated a u.n. resolution by launching those short-range ballistic missiles, but said he is prepared for some form of diplomacy, although, at the same time, he warned that if the north chooses to escalate, he said, we will respond accordingly. >> and martha, you and i have both traveled to afghanistan, we've reported on these talks with the taliban, the efforts to try to bring u.s. troops home. the president was asked, would he withdraw u.s. troops from aghanistan by the may 1st deadline, which is just weeks away, that had been set by former president trump? >> reporter: as you know, david, the president said it will be hard to have those 2,500 troops out by may, but said emphatically, we will leave and said he couldn't imagine our troops would still be there by next year. david? >> all right, martha raddatz live in washington. martha, thank you. now to the coronavirus here in the u.s., and the alarming numbers. new cases now rising by at least 10% in at least 20 states. and president biden, of course, now saying 200 million shots in his first 100 days. pfizer tonight starting a new trial on young children. one research doctor calling it quote, a big step towards herd immunity in this country. the numbers tonight. 87,092,000 people have received at least one dose. that's more than 33% of adults now. also tonight, new york governor andrew cuomo under fire again. this time, accusations that he put his own family at the front of the line for covid testing early on in this pandemic. the governor's response tonight. here's abc's victor oquendo now. >> reporter: tonight, as the country tops 30 million cases of the coronavirus, infections on the rise. in 20 states, case averages are climbing more than 10% in the last week. >> she's going to count for me, okay? >> one, two, three. >> reporter: it comes as pfizer is starting to test its vaccine on younger children ages 5 to 11. >> five, six, seven -- >> that feels good. >> reporter: the first participants, 9-year-old twins marisol and alejandra gerardo. their mother is an infectious disease doctor. >> as a parent, where your number one job is keeping your kids safe and healthy, it honestly was just really reassuring to know that they may be getting some level of immunity there. >> reporter: researchers say it's a critical step in getting this country to herd immunity, reached after roughly 80% of americans are vaccinated. >> children make up a significant proportion of our population, so in trying to achieve herd immunity, it really is important that we are able to include children in vaccination programs. >> reporter: today, astrazeneca, the fourth vaccinemaker expected to seek emergency authorization from the fda, updating its trial results after being accused of using outdated data. the company now says its vaccine is 76% effective against symptomatic disease -- 3% less than earlier reported -- and the vaccine remains 100% effective against severe disease and hospitalization. >> this is a fabulous vaccine, safe and effective, but i wish the company had just done a better job of communicating those results. >> reporter: at least 32 states are expanding vaccine access for everyone 16 and older by the president's may 1st deadline. in california, 32 million people will have the green light by april 15th. >> there's not just light at the end of the tunnel. there's bright light at the end of the tunnel. >> some encouragement there today. victor, the other pandemic-related headline, accusations involving new york governor andrew cuomo, that he gave members of his own family and other influential people priority for covid testing in the early days of the pandemic. his response? >> reporter: david, the embattled governor facing tough questions after reports that he gave his family and others access to government-run tests at a time when the average person really couldn't get one. the governor saying that in those early days of the pandemic, they were focused on contact tracing and stopping the spread of the virus. david? >> all right, victor oquendo on the pandemic for tonight. victor, thank you. we're going to turn next here to the mass shooting in boulder, colorado. the suspect in court for the first time today. we watched, brought into the court in a wheelchair to face ten counts of murder. one count, of course, for each of the ten lives lost in that rampage. and today, the boulder police department tweeting that when they took the suspect into custody, they used the handcuffs of the officer who was killed. here's our chief national correspondent matt gutman again tonight. >> reporter: tonight, those first images of the man accused of that supermarket rampage, wheeled into court, handcuffed and in a blue jail suit. the judge informing 21-year-old ahmad alissa he faces ten counts of murder, plus a single count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting at an officer during monday's massacre at king soopers. >> sir, do you understand those rights as i've explained them to you this morning? we need you to answer out loud, please. >> yes. >> reporter: in court, alissa's public defenders requesting three months to assess his mental health. >> we cannot begin to assess the nature and depth of mr. alissa's mental illness until we have the discovery from the government. >> reporter: friends and family have reportedly said alissa struggled both with controlling his anger and with mental health. but today, the d.a. saying it's too early to worry about strategy. are you concerned that the defense will say that he's unfit to stand trial? >> we'll have to see how it unfolds in court. >> reporter: in court, deputies flanking alissa with those black stripes over their badges to honor slain officer eric talley. today, the boulder police department tweeting that when officers took alissa into official custody, they used talley's handcuffs, calling it a small gesture and hopefully the start of the healing process that so many of us need at this time. and tonight, we're hearing for the first time from the family of 23-year-old neven stanisic, the son of serbian refugees. "the denver post" reporting he was a repairman who had already left the supermarket after fixing a coffee machine. he was shot in the parking lot in his car. his family thanking the serbian community across the u.s. for their support. and david, we've learned moments ago that alissa has been moved to an undisclosed facility because of rumblings of death threats against him at the boulder county jail. we understand he is still under protective custody, basically isolation and will remain so for the next two to three months. david? >> all right, matt gutman, our thanks to you again tonight. we have two more notes here from the president's news conference today. president biden was asked about republican-led efforts in state legislatures across the country to pass laws restricting voting. president biden responding, calling the whole initiative un-american, in his words, and sick. he said he would soon lay out a strategy to address it, saying many republican voters in this country would not be behind this if the public fully knew. and 65 days into his first term, the president was also asked, will he run again in 2024 and will vice president harris be his running mate? he say, "yes, that is my expectation." when we come back here tonight, two potential tragedies averted. a man in atlanta allegedly armed with at least five guns, wearing body armor in a grocery store. and an armed man arrested in kentucky, carrying possible explosives. details on both fronts in a moment. those who du more with less asthma. thanks to dupixent. the add-on treatment for specific types of moderate-to-severe asthma. dupixent isn't for sudden breathing problems. it can improve lung function for better breathing in as little as 2 weeks and help prevent severe asthma attacks. it's not a steroid but can help reduce or eliminate oral steroids. dupixent can cause serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis. get help right away if you have rash, shortness of breath, chest pain, tingling or numbness in your limbs. tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection and don't change or stop your asthma treatments, including steroids, without talking to your doctor. du more with less asthma. talk to your asthma specialist about dupixent. if your financial situation has changed, we may be able to help. ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. whoo-hoo! great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to support immune health. i'm searching for info on options trading, and look, it feels like i'm just wasting time. that's why td ameritrade designed a first-of-its-kind, personalized education center. oh. their award-winning content is tailored to fit your investing goals and interests. and it learns with you, so as you become smarter, so do its recommendations. so it's like my streaming service. well except now you're binge learning. see how you can become a smarter investor with a personalized education from td ameritrade. visit tdameritrade.com/learn ♪ facing leaks takes strength, so here's to the strong, who trust in our performance and comfortable, long-lasting protection. because your strength is supported by ours. depend. the only thing stronger than us, is you. tonight, we're learning police averting two potential tragedies in the wake of those two deadly mass shootings in atlanta and boulder this week. in atlanta, authorities now say suspect rico marley was allegedly armed with at least five guns and wearing body armor inside a publix grocery store. the atlantic station location. he was arrested. in lexington, kentucky, police also arresting a man at the university of kentucky hospital, allegedly armed with guns, wearing body armor there and carrying possible explosives. when we come back here tonight, we remember an actress famous for her biting humor. so you're my fairy godmayo? yes, i wield the power of best foods to magically transform any food into creamy, dreamy works of art. boop. with a butter knife? this is a mayo knife. ♪ so you want to make the best burger ever? then make it! that means cooking day and night until you get...
