Expands across napa, solana, and yellow counties it is 33 contained. Cal fire said theyre leeting more evacuees go home now. But the wall bridge fire in Sonoma County, which you see on the left there, continues to be a challenge for firefighters. Make no mistake, theres a lot of work that has to be done. Its a very difficult country over there. There is no fire hiss troifr there. What i can tell you is theres a good plan in place. Folks over there are working tirelessly every day. Reporter lets go right to Wayne Freedman who was at the wallidge fire today. Wayne . Its been quieter today, a lot more smoky today and roadblocks continue. This is the entrance and there you see the cars trying to get in. Many of them are. Some of them are not. On the surface you might say this was too quiet a day but there werent a lot of big flames, not a lot of advancement of the fires but up on the hills you see the work thats being done, weather helped as firefighters have gained ground. In the hills around healdsburg dry creek valley, this is what passed as firefighting most of today, hosing down smoldering trees, cutting and trying to stay the head of a wall bridge fire thats been hard to catch and difficult to contain for more than a week. When you hear about a fire line, this is a classic example. This cleared. This over here burned. Over there, thats where they dont want the fire to go. A lot of fires rushing in the communities are deep in the Wooded Forest area. Its deep and accessible in an area that hasnt burned since the 1900s. Still, figuring out where the containment lines are can be tricky. Reporter speaking of tricks, winemakers will need to call on a few. The good news is this is one of the earliest harvests on record but they could not predict smoke so thick that at times they could not see from one side of the valley to another. The shortterm damage might be some of the vineyards have got sloped taint. They will be in the higher elevations. The lower elevation vineyards, valley floor vineyards, probably suffered pretty well. Reporter what was the best of what we saw how about donating boxes of bur burritos to firefighters. We can eat. Burning a lot ofwork. Those firefighters came from tur lock and patterson. They told me they were away from home ten Straight Days and back at it again today. I dont think a burrito ever tasted better. I love in the dry creek valley, wayne hield, abc7 news. Some 280 National Guards men and women arrived today on the north bay. They will handle mopup duties, reinforce containment lines and handle hot spots if need me. Basically the training consists of three days. We have two days of classroom which are basic fundamental, familiarity with fire behave esh and basically what the job is of a fireman and on the third day we participate in training where we put everything together in the field. This is a 30day deployment. They will spend 21 days on the fireline. The other days are for training and then they will wrap up. With so many fires burning in california, firefighters need all of the help they can get. New video today of the devastation in the Berryessa Highlands area of napa county. Look at the rubble there. The hennessey fire ripped through that area last week destroying several homes while leaving others untouched. Residents were allowed in monday to check on their property on the area located not far from lake berryessa. They make up whats called the lnu lightning complex burning nearly 300,000 acres. Firefighters continue to make progress against the cvu lightning complex burning in the skr santa cruz mountains. They are active bningn heavy timber and thick undergrowth. The fire charred more than 80,000 acres and 19 contained. Its destroyed 443 structures, damaging 43 others. One person has been killed. Approximately 77,000 people have been evacuated, mostly in the communities from Scotts Valley to boulder creek. Abc7s chris reyes is live in san jose with the latest on the second biggest fire in california history. Good afternoon. While theyre getting good weather for sure, the mountains are covered in mist from a distance, but make no mistake, firefighting conditions continue to be dangerous. Western deep in the burn zones for about two hours and that was tough. Yet everywhere we looked, crews were hard at work with only one goal, gain ground. When youre fighting a fire in the skruz mountains, this is what it looks like, one firefighter scaling a deep terrain, pulling hoses thousands of feet long, to fire one hot spot. Thats the are work happening all along bonny doon and dealten, some of the hardesthit areas of this route. So far mosh 500 structures have been destroyed. The most common question we get from residents, will when they be allowed to go back home . Let me show you the roads to get to this point and well give you an idea why this isnt happening just yet. These are the roads closed to all residents, dark, smoke, ashy, full of debris, not to mention the hot spots that continue to smolder and burn. Its not just the fire is out, can we go back . We have to make sure utilities are in place and roads safe for travel. Reporter less smoke, more fog, the marine layer coating the mountains a good sign. Extra moisture in the air doesnt allow the fuels to as intense as it was when it was hot and dry. Theyve got a couple what we call firing operations where we fight the fire with fire, and make that buffer around the different communities and eat up that unburned fuel before the actual fire gets to that location. Reporter its that kind of progress that makes a difference. This black line in the northern zone of the fire, their biggest one yet. It means theyre in full control of that area, and evacuation orders for Santa Clara County could be lifted. Roads may be deserted but we found signs everywhere of a community grateful. Again, we empathize with residents who are asking, how is my house . Santa cruz Sheriffs Office put together an invaluable resource, a website to plug in your address and you can find out how your neighborhood is doing. Well have that link on our website. Chris reyes, abc7 news. Chris, thank you. An hour ago cal fire initials gave an update on the scu complex. Its affecting six coupe yits across the east and south bay. More than 365,000 acres burned. That complex is 25 contained. Firefighters say they know crews and neighbors are exhausted at this point but this is a critical week. So people need to hang tough and help each other out. Its a moment on this fire we need to take a big, deep breath genceoror d to maintain our the safet of thepeleee hse orders and warning thate still. With that, i know our troops are getting tired. I know the communities who inconvenience. Just know we are not going to keep those orders and warnings out there any longer than we have to. Officials say even when these fires are more contained, fire season isnt over yet. In fact, weve got a couple more months of this potentially. All the more reason to try keen morale up. The fire got some aerial support today. Sky 7 captured the 747 Global Supertanker dropping retardant on flames. This plane is the largest aerial fi firefighting air tanker in the world and dropped on other fires in the bay area this week. Several helicopters are helping in the fight. Several are in livermore. Five helicopters were assigned to the scu complex right now. And weather is obviously really key, kristin, in battling all of these fires throughout the bay area. Never been so happy, spencer, to see the temperatures. Thats true. Firefighters are getting a little help from the weather but weve got gust yinds in some spots. Lets start in the north bay over near the wall bridge fire. 47 winds gusting to 12 miles an hour. The hennessey fire, winds gusting 11 Miles Per Hour bust its not hot, not terribly hot and its not terribly dry. So on we go to better conditions near the woodward fire, where the relative humidity is at 100 , temperature only 51 with positive factors, and one challenging factor, wind gusts up to 20 miles an hour. And skruz near the czu lightning complex. Winds gusting near 15 miles an hour and humidity up to 72 , thats good new u. S. And temperature only 62. Nonetheless, the air quality remains rather poor. Ill give you a closer look later. Experience, thank you. You can follow fires statewide with our exclusive fire tracker. See where fires are spreading and get containment information in realtime. A change in covid testing guidelines by the cdc is causing some doctors to scratch their heads. On monday the agency declared that nonatrisk people without symptoms who havent been in close contact with somebody with a known infection dont need a test. The cdc didnt explain why the change was being made. And californias governor agrees. Abc7 News Reporter stephanie sierra asked Governor Newsom about the change in the cdc guidance at todays press briefing. Stephanie . The governor made it very clear today he does not agree with the cdc on this. His comments actually came just shortly after he announced major plans for the state to not only expand Testing Capacity, but significantly drive down costs. Ahead of whats projected to be a busy flu season, governor gavin newsom announced what hes calling a new approach to disrupt the covid19 testing market. People that develop fluslli symptoms are going to understandably and likely request that they get tested not only for flu but also get tested for covid19. Reporter in an effort to prepare, the state has signed a contract with perkinelmer, a major diagnostics company, that will process an additional 150,000 covid tests per day. That will more than double the states current Testing Capacity. Critical help that comes at a time with conflicting advice from the cdc that says theres no need to test asymptomatic people who have been in contact with someone infected with covid19. I asked the governor you agree with that . And what is your response to this recent change in guide snaens. I dont agree with the new cdc guidance, period, full stop. Its not the policy of the state of california. We will not be influenced by that change. Were influenced by those that are experts in the field. Reporter and its those experts that suggest the state needs to drive down test turnaround times and the cost. Thsaid this new partnership will do both. We are demanding test results back within 24 hours, the latest 48 hours. Reporter that will be a big cut from the current five to sevenday wait. Another big cut promised, the price. Currently the average cost for a covid test is 150 to 200. But under this new partnership, the goal is to drive down that price to around 30. The state hopes to have these lab thats will be expanding Testing Capacity up and running between november and march of next year. Stephanie sierra, abc7 news. Stephanie, thank you. Its not just covid19 you need to worry about. Experts are sounding the alarm in an effort to head off what could be a perfect storm for california hospitals, as two potentially deadly viruses strike at the same time. Abc7 News Reporter laurie anthony with the story from walnut creek. Some insurance against what we lazily referred to as the twindemic, flu and covid season. Reporter as if the covid kriessy wasn crisis wasnt enough, state and local Health Officials are gearing up for another threat, flu season. It will be difficult to tell. Reporter thats why they will test for both to determine best treatments. We have a few different testing platforms, two of which test mainly for just covid and then we have a third platform that were increasing capacity of the test for covid, influenza and most common ress pa tourtory viruses. Reporter one main concern schools could make decisions based on covid, only to be hit later by a surge in flu cases, although flu outbreak as loan dont normally cause School Closures n short medical experts strongly urge people to get a flu shot this year. We dont have polio today. We dont have smallpox today. Were able to prevent severe influenza infection. Vaccinations changed the whole scope of medical care. Reporter perhaps one bright spot in all of this, the fact were all masking up for the coronavirus may help keep the spread of the flu in check. Evidence from australia indicates all of the coronavirus precautions stifled a major flu outbreak there. One of the suppositions was because of the masking and social distancing. A supposition, not proven, but i think that makes a certain amount of sense to me reporter its a trend experts hope also plays out here. In walnut creek, laura anthony, abc7 news. We want to turn our attention to the Weather Forecast and slow limb proving air quality, spencer sflxt it is slowly improving, kristin, especially near the coast because were getting the stronger wind gusts there blowing the poor air farther inland. Inland areas are still suffering. Lets look at whats going on right now. A view of live doppler 7. You can see its a bit breezy as it has been in most areas. Some areas like sonoma and nevada, we have singledigit wind speeds but most others have speeds 15 to 20 miles an hour. Still, dreary view as we look westward. Midlevel clouds, low clouds, smoke and haze. But its kind of interesting, looks sort of artistic with the rural reflections of the satellite off the bay waters. 58 in San Francisco, 56 in oakland, 72 in mountain view, 67 half moon bay. Rather dreary view looking northward from the golden gate. 75 up in santa rosa, nevada 77, napa 70. 84 fairfield, 83 concord, 77 livermore. The view from our backyard, rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero, patchy drizzle likely overnight and through the Early Morning hours tomorrow. Smoke impacts friday with lingering poor air quality and alerts through friday. A warmer pattern will develop at the end of the week as well. Between tomorrow and friday, we expect poor air quality in all sections of the bay area but moderate air quality saturday and sunday. So the weekend will bring us, we expect, some improvement in air quality. Overnight look for low clouds to push across the bay and produce little spots of patchy drizzle here and there near the coast, around the bay, over the peninsula. And then as the morning commute gets under way, there will still be a few wet spots perhaps. Maybe slippery pavement but later in the day clouds will pull back to the coast liline giving us a hazy and sunny day. Getting a little cooler overnight. South bay look for highs in the lowtomid80s, 82 santa clara. On the peninsula upper 70s to low 80s, in fact from redwood city to mountain view. Low to mid60s. Downtown San Francisco tops out at 67. Up in the north bay look for 82a rosa, 85 sonoma. East bay, shoreline low to mid70s but midland east bay highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. And spare the air alerts tomorrow and friday. It will warm up friday especially inland. We will see upper 90s inland. Temperatures moderate going inland as air quality improves. Temperatures will ease up a bit and then well see warm typically midsummer warm pattern going into early next week. Spencer, thank you. Abc7s liz congratulation hasgr what we can expect tonight. Through the lens tonight Vice President pence is expected to given his speech through baltimore. Heavy emphasis on military, veterans, Law Enforcement and everyday heroes. Reports also say he may bring up his opposition to athletes who kneel during the national anthem. That is interesting timing, of course, given just today the nba postponed all games because of the Police Shooting of jacob blake. Its unclear if the Vice President will address that shooting. Now last night at the rnc we heard from first lady melania trump, whose speech about being an immigrant and mother seemed to be aimed at minority voters. The president also presided over a naturalization ceremony, which the Biden Campaign called an empty gesture. Theyre accusing the president and rnc as using immigrants as, quote, props. Tonight others we will hear from in addition to the Vice President serksd lady karen pence will speak as well as aother trump family member, laura trump and who other Trump Administration officials, Kellyanne Conway and press secretary kayleigh mcenany. Texas representative crenshaw will also deliver a response. Hs state is bracing for hurricane laura. Theres been no mention of the hurricane wildfires for hurricane barreling towards texas so it will be interesting to see how and if those issues are addressed tonight. Liz, thank you. Lets get perspective from somebody who if not for covid19 would be at the Republican National convention this week, john dennis. Hes been a delegate to the California RepublicanParty Convention since 2009. We thank you for your time joining us now. Obviously without delegates there, its a different field. You cant replicae the energy of thousands of people in an arena. What is the one thing you wish you could be there for in person . I was supposed to play golf with rand paul on monday. I missed that. I missed seeing the friends that i have made on the national scene, people from around the country and, of course, the energy as you mentioned that would have come out of the convention had we all been there. So a couple of nights ago, Kimberly Guilfoyle described San Francisco as im quoting now a land of discarded heroin needles in parks, riots in streets and blackouts in homes. You lived in San Francisco i think for almost 20 years now. Is that how you view this city . Well, im sorry to correct you but its been 30 years and in the course of my 30 years, i have to say thats what i think of when i think of San Francisco now. I have so many friends who are leaving the city. I dont know about you but i think most people know people who are leaving the city. I just sort of had enough of the difficulty and challenges San Francisco brings. Youre right, i think it was 91 i read in the bio. I have to get my math down. Appreciate it. This Republican Convention different from most. You have a lot of members of the trump family giving speeches. It will be different tonight. The focus has been more on the personality as well as approach of president trump. Were not getting into a lot of policy discussions, social security, et cetera. Do you like that approach . Do you think thats most beneficial for the party . Yes, i do and i also like the stage prep the Republican Party displayed here. I think it was really touching, and i think a lot of people find swearingin ceremonies moving. That was a very powerful moment for a lot of people. And also it was subversive, subverted the entire democratic narrative somehow donald trump and the entire Republican Party is against immigrants and were not, were against illegal immigration. And that was a nice framing. And i loved the entire presentation from melania trump. Shes a unique person and unique perspective with a special look and i think the way they set her up last night was fantastic. There was a poll that came out a few days ago suggesting 57 of republicans believe 175,000,000 deaths from the coronavirus is quote unquote acceptable. Give me a reaction to that. I think unavoidable is probably the better word. I think the virus is doing pretty much what viruses do. Were having some impact i suppose in trying to do the positive thing thats would impact the outcome. But the virus is going to live its life cycle and go through its life cycle and i dont think theres a lot we can do. I dont think politicians on either side can be blamed for the outcome. Let me ask you the most challenging question that i think we face, how do we fix the divisions in the country and these parties . Because it doesnt real slime li really seem like either side wants to Work Together a whole lot . I think it would be nice if we can get to a point to disagree with the person without disliking the person. I think thats where we are right now. Its true certainly on both size. I also think that a lot of people feel like that the other side is an existential threat to each other. We have to sort of move pass that. Get to the point we can disagree with the person without disliking the person and then maybe we can make steps in the right direction. John dennis, chairman of the San FranciscoRepublican Party, living in the city for almost 30 years. We got it. Appreciate your time. Appreciate it. You can catch live coverage of the Republican National convention. Starts at 7 00 right here on abc7. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the radification of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. To mark the occasion, the california secretary of States Office held a virtual roundtable. Several prominent women discussing the breakthrough and the ongoing efforts to guarantee everyone the right to vote. The panel will say issues like Voter Suppression and access to voting need to be addressed. Turnout in the United States is frankly abysmal. In 2016 it was a record year. About 60 of eligible voters that year cast a ballot, and that means that 100 Million People did not vote in 2016. According to the panelists, the most common reason why people didnt vote in 2016 is inconvenience. People missing registration deadlines or couldnt stand in line for hours. Postponing all three playoff games scheduled for today after players for the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court and members of the rockets and thunder follow suit. Lakers blame has been postponed and theres talk the giants might not play the dodgers tonight. Those discussions are happening as we speak. All of these actions stem from sundays shooting of jacob blake, who is now paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot seven times in the back by police. So weve talked about this over the past year or so. This is really the era of player empowerment in sports. Spencer, we are seeing a different tactic now. The nba players in particular are saying to their owners that, look, you guys are billioaires. You have tremendous political clout. You want to see playoff games, you want to make your money, youre on the clock right now, get something dob get something done. You think it will be effective . I hope it will be effective. I dont know what else we can do to call attention to this tragic pattern we are seeing. So i guess this is one way, if you stop sports for a while, it wakes people up and makes them wonder, well, why. You can see why, because of whats happening in the streets of our country. Kristen, i know youre a huge giants fan and sports fan in general. Whats your reaction because a lot of people would say lets try to keep the sports and politic as part . I dont know if you can in this day and age. There is really no separation, political statements seem to be made everywhere. And those who are in a position of actually garnering their platform and collective voices to make a difference and to be heard, i think this is a new thing and i think its having an impact. So i think we will see more of it. As a sports fan, i have to say, i understand. All right. Were going to move on this one, heroes, battling fires on the frontlines are finding emotional support from an unlikely source. I think you talk to anybody who has a pet, they bring so much comfort during these times and folks fighting these fires, any break they can get for a smile or hug or puppy like that is just so great to hear. I love these stories about dogs just helping humans get tluf times. Those are my favorite stories. Spencer, we kind of forget firefighters out there too, they need support. They are in the grind for weeks at a time. They really are. Their lives are on the line. Their health is on the line. Theyre doing all of this because they are trying to protect us. Its great to see these pets bringing a smile to their faces. Sort of why we keep larry around here. Spencer, youre right, i have been described as too playful and energetic. Thats why im kept at hoenl. Kept at home. Just when you think its safe to get in the water, a shark shows up. The u. S. Coast guard posted this photo. It does require some explanation here. Hey, guys, i dont know if you remember but yesterday i reported that there was going to be a new refinancing fee for fannie mae and freddie mac because of coronavirus. They said they lived in unpredictable times. I said, i dont know how theyre getting by with it. Turns out, theyre not. At least not yet. The federal Housing Finance agency said it would delay the implementation and waive the fee entirely for smaller refinances. The adverse market refinance fee, which would have added a hefty fee to refinance mortgages that were resold to fannie mae and freddie mac. Well today the fha, say, directed the companies to delay from september 1 through december 1 and said loan fees loans less than 125,000 would be exempt. Apparently theyre not going to get by with it.
