tomorrow and on thursday including the bay area. >> unless the forecast changes, customers in three east bay cities and napa county will be shut off. this could spread to include much more of us. it would cover every bay area. it's a good idea to charge your phones and electronics now. if you have an external battery charge that, too. fill up on gas. >> in the south bay nearly 40,000 could be affected. pg&e is opening community centers for people to have a place to go and get out of the warmth. jobina fortson joins us live with details on that. jobina? >> reporter: pg&e says prepare right now if you haven't already, if you need some place to go. that center will open tomorrow starting at 8:00 a.m. and then will close around 6:00 p.m. and that will last for the duration of the event.cuomer io crging and air conditioning. according to san jose mayor sam liccardo, 67 schools are located within the potential outage zones. the city is working with individual school districts t come up with plans, traffic lights throughout san jose are not hooked up to emergency power sources so drivers need to be careful if you're going to be out on the roadways. this looming loss of power is also worrying many small businesses especially seasonal places like dead time dreams haunted house. >> if you put it on a friday or saturday night, that's thousands of dollars that would be gone. and for a small little haunted house like us, that's the end of the game. >> reporter: if pg&e moves forward with the public safety power shutoffs this could leave more than 38,000 customers without power. >> jobina, thank you. in the north bay napa and sonoma counties are getting ready for power shutoffs. you can expect elect to they've been told to prepareday. down to its last power generator. >> i think people are pretty certain it will be shut down. i feel the same way. i'm set up with a generator at home. >> sonoma county has declared an emergency as a precaution. about 30,000 may be impacted by the power shutoffs. >> the latest wildfire warnings in the north bay include areas still rebuilding from the deadly tubbs fire. it killed 22 people and burned for almost a month in napa and sonoma counties. we spoke with one man whose home survived but neighbors and friends weren't as lucky. >> if it takes shutting it down, i'm all for it. nobody is. >> the tubbs fire is the second most destructive in state history. the wildfire was started by a private electrical system not pg&e. >> this would not be the first time they have shut off power. since then pg&e has shut off power avoid this morning is on the peninsula, southbound 101 in san carlos. a car hit a pedestrian. someone was reportedly walking in the lanes. take 280 as an alternate and also an injury crash at highway 24 on the right-hand side but you can see traffic jammed through walnut creek on the southbound side. thank you, frances. we have breaking news now from washington, d.c. a suspicious package has been found in front of the supreme court. and you're looking at a live picture right now. u.s. capitol police closed several streets. of course this comes on a big day there. justices get ready to hear at texas blocking lanes. a problem at a-street and a live shot. it is very heavy. there was an earlierrash hi accident. the earlier traffic alert southbound 101 through san carlos cleared and traffic has recovered. >> thanks, frances. get prepared right now. customers in three cities and napa county will lose power starting tomorrow morning. pg&e says it will shut off power to parts of napa and >> lives will be disrupted maybe for a day, maybe up to five days and think about what that means for you, your businesses, schools, even your phones. we're so used to being able to charge it up with no problem. amy hollyfield is live for us in orinda. >> reporter: think about your gas tank, too. fill it up today. pumps won't be working tomorrow without electricity. this gas station does not have a generator so it will be shut down. pg&e has notified orinda and lafayette that the power will be turned off between midnight and 4:00 tomorrow morning as a preventative measure. the utility is worried old equipment could blow over during the wind event we're expected to have and could start a fire. this could impact about 120,000 customers and many tell us they are getting ready. >> we bought a small one in case we need something for backup power. amazon is delivering it today. we'll have to test it out and figure out if it works. we're prepared. >> reporter: another thing you can do, sign up for alerts from your local agencies. pg&e has not said how long the power will be off. they said at least through thursday afternoon but it could be several days. so they're saying take today to get ready. that includes keeping that phone charged up as much as you can today so it will be ready for tomorrow. reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. thank you, amy. bay area school districts say they have a plan in place to deal with the power shutdown. oakland unified sent out a warning that ten of their schools could lose power this week. the district says any affected schools will close for the day. plans are in place for robo calls and online notifications to students and parents. other school districts have similar plans in place. b.a.r.t. says any pg&e power shutoff should not affect service. b.a.r.t. says its trains continue to operate because they don't rely on pg&e for power. a b.a.r.t. spokesperson says station escalators and lighting do rely on pg&e power. the transit agency enhanced its backup power supply. >> abc 7 news has put together tips about preparing for power outages where you live and so here are a few things to think about. store plenty of fresh batteries for flashlights and radios. keep a stash of emergency cash on hand. most atms and credit card readers won't work in a blackout. disconnect your computer and use a surge protector to avoid arguments today in one of the most high-profile cases of the year. they are deciding if lgbtq workers are protected from work place discrimination. two cases deal with men fired because of their sexual orientation. the third case includes amy stevens who was fired when she told her boss she's transgender and would start dressing as a woman. a lower court ruled in her favor saying she was protected by title 7 of the 1964 civil rights act which bans discrimination based on sex. president trump's decision to pull u.s. troops out of syria is drawing backlash from some of the biggest supporters. mr. trump says he's making good on a campaign promise. but top republicans say the u.s. is betraying its strongest ally in the fight against isis. >> turkey, syria, let them take care of love to see it on social media. the 80s are gone from san francisco. most of the 70s, upper 60s to near 70 this afternoon with low clouds at the coast. high clouds and sunshine everywhere else. an update on the dangerous fire situation developing in the accuweather seven day forecast. three traffic alerts early this morning. one of them still in effect. this is for oakland. westbound 580 at coolidge. multiple vehicles, an overturn car crash, two right lanes blocked and traffic is crawling from highway 13. you will notice some yellow is slow through oakland. southbound 880 very jammed through hayward and an accident. it's also slow as you make your way westbound 92 heading to the san mateo bridge. a couple problems on 680, southbound 680 as you head to sunol. there's an accident blocking lanes. new reports southbound 680. a jackknifed big rig reported there. a look at southbound 680 through walnut creek. traffic is heavy with all the brake lights making their way to highway 24 because of an earlier crash and the other traffic trouble spot was in the maze. that one has been cleared. westbound 80 is very heavy from albany. you can see it is backed up through the maze as you make your way through. you'll find a slow ride westbound across the san mateo bridge as well on the right-hand side. and lots of slowing out there. but that southbound 680 stretch with that crash joins us live with the details. jobina? >> reporter: good morning, kumasi and reggie. if pg&e moves forward with their public safety shutoffs it could leave more than 38,000 customers in santa clara county without power. the stadium right behind me will serve as a community resource center for customers starting tomorrow morning. the main portion of this windy as well as dry weather risk is early wednesday morning through midday thursday. if pg&e decides to implement, the company will start turning off power early wednesday morning. if you're in a potential outage zone, prepare right now. san jose mayor sam liccardo tells us 67 schools are located within san jose's potential outage zones. the city is working to come up with a plan. traffic lights throughout san jose are not hooked up to emergency power sources so drivers need to be careful while they're out on the roads. >> first and foremost, we would encourage residents and business topa for being without power for potentially as pg&e.com. then power shut off on the right side as you can see. your next move it will pop up the announcement on the screen and you'll want to choose find out if your service may be impacted. from there after you click on it, it will take you to the potential outage maps as you'll see here. scroll down and enter up address to find out if your service is being affected. if you scroll down further, there is a second map that will show you the areas that could have the power turned off. you can then zoom in on the map to get a closer view right down to the neighborhoods affected. >> we have a list of resources to help you prepare for a power outage and stay informed. find a way to sign up for power outage alerts from pg&e. that is all at abc7news.com. two big retailers are saying no to e-cigarettes, kroger and walgreens. kroger owns stores in the bay area. retailers say there's too much uncertainty. according to the cdc there have that may be linked to vaping. health officials
