Saying hes seen quite enough, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his own Evacuation Order to snuff out teen vaping. And the ready accessibility of flavored ecigarettes. Governor alone is not afforded the right legally to ban those products outright that we would need legislative support. Again, were pushing the envelope. Well see how far we can go. Newsoms order includes three initiative, warning labels on ecigarette ads and at stores. 20 million into a vaping Awareness Campaign and the removal of illegal vaping products. Another 380 illnesses were attributed to vaping in a total of 36 states. The cdc activated its Emergency Operation center today in response to the spike in deths and illnesses. It will work around the clock collecting data and helping local officials. The cdc has not said at which level the center will be operation. Level 1 is the most urgent, and a level 3 is the lowest. The Emergency Operation Center Concept was initiated in 2001 and has dealt with more than 60 Public Health threats. Happening now, oracle open world is under way at Moscone Center at San Francisco. Just last week, the city moved forward with a plan to build a Navigation Center behind city hall. The issue was contentious, andrew a huge crowd to city hall as the debate went on for hours. Fremonts goal is to have it up and running by the middle of next year. Fremont has more than 600 people who are homeless. About 80 of them are considered unsheltered, meaning they are living on the streets. The city has the third highest Homeless Population in Alameda County behind oakland and berkeley. The city of fremd has seen a 27 increase in the number of Homeless People since 2017. Yeah, and as the bay area struggles to find ways to address the homeless, the city launches a new service tomorrow. Ansar hassan joins us live with how this would work. Ansar . Yeah, kristen and dan, good evening. One of the major obstacles Homeless People face is trying to keep their bed and their clothes clean. This new mobile unit gives them a place to shower and do laundry, two very simple tasks that can be very difficult for people who have no police to go. Craig johnson has lived in fremont since 1968 and has been homeless for the past few years. He says being homeless is tough, but what most people dont realize is just how hard it is to keep clean. Its pretty hard. Ive got a lot of friends because ive lived here so long. But for a lot of these, especially the younger people, they dont have nowhere to go. Theyre hoping this new cleanll assistance. I think the goals are really to provide dignity and a more healthy environment for our homeless residents. Inside the unit, there are two full bathrooms. People will be given 15 minutes for a shower. City Officials Say its a way to help people stay clean, which they say can be a major obstacle fo those out on the street. A lot of our homeless work and having access to a shower to be able to be clean and have clean clothes because we do laundry as well as showers, is really important. The trailer wont just serve fremont, but newark as well. The unit cost 125,000 and is a project fund bade grant from Alameda County, earmarked specifically for programs to assist the countys Homeless Population. This man who didnt want to talk on camera says these services arent enough. The city says its a start. We think its going to take multiple approaches to address the homeless issue. The unit had its inaugural run this morning. It officially launches tomorrow. Theyre hoping once its fully up and running to provide services twice a day, monday through friday. San Francisco Mayor london breed reacted to reports today that housing and urban Development Director ben carson is apparently planning to visit the bay area tomorrow. Breed was touring the circle Navigation Center in the citys Mission District. The expanding center has just added 60 new beds to bring its total to 186. The mayor said current federal policy leaves significant room for improvement, and that carson should be aware of the effect that its having on the city. Breed promised staff and residents at the center that the city will continue expanding services and adding new shelter beds. Well, Governor Newsom is also asking President Trump tooo help the homeless. This comes as the white house is talking about getting more involved in doing something to address californias growing homeless crisis. Federal officials were in los angeles as we reported to you last week to see the numerous homeless camps that have popped up there. The governors request seeks 50,000 more vouchers and to increase their value to account for soaring rent costs in the state. A new warning tonight for those with Student Loan Debt. Thats right. Here is a story thats important to you if you have student loans. The federal trade commission has taken action against a couple of Student Loan Debt relief services. The ftc alleges defendants charged illegal upfront fees, leading consumers to believe the money went towards consumer student loans. The ftc says consumers should take this as a warning, saying there are other firms out there making similar claims. It sure sounded like a good idea, but not all good things last. Movie ticketing service moviepass was launched back in 2011 has closed down, the less for now. The service offered several different plans.
