flames traveled. as soon as the smoke came we had to retreat. there was nothing we could do. o'keefe and others ran out the front door on 31st avenue but three dozen others never made it out alive. defense attorneys claim the fire was arson. oh keefe testified he saw no suspicious activity or people inside the warehouse that night but he did say the fire moved very quickly. >> smoke that had a sparkly or graphite type characteristic to it. a smoke that although it was more than 100 feet from the fire scorched or burned the lips. >> reporter: dr. thomas rogers testified about autopsies he performed on nine of the 36 people wdie who died in the gho ship. all nine died from smoke inhalation. a friend of almena told us i told him this is very dangerous, this is a death trap. he laughed at me and said we should call it the satya yuga death trap. it's loosely translated as the age of truth. >> interesting. >> what he says is certainly alarming, but did he take those concerns about safety at the warehouse to anybody else? >> reporter: well, he did. he testified that after he had driven by the ghost ship on a later occasion sometime in 2014 after there had been a small fire outside the warehouse that griffin said to the jury that he actually went over to a fire station which was just a block away and he warned firefighters, he told them,heondions this warehouse are unsafe, asked what the firefighters did or a fire chief as the man was described did, grirffin said he acknowledged the conversation and said the fire department knew about the conditions inside the warehouse. as far as we know, this was ere follow-up. new details a skateboarder accused of attacking a security guard in san francisco is off the legal hook, at least for now. a judge declare add mistrial in the case of 24-year-old jessie vee a ve viera. jensen's family says he's now in an assisted living facility and had to have part of his skull removed. richmond police say this guy attacked a woman and tried to force her into his car. she managed to call 911 and leave the line open. dispatchers heard her crying and the man yelling. that was enough to pinpoint the location of her cell phone and send police. officers arrested that guy after he tried to run off. the woman has serious injuries to her face but otherwise thankfully is expected to be okay. the rio vista police department is investigating what happened in this video that shows a police officer body slamming a woman during a traffic stop. rio vista is in solano county not far from antioch. the family says the police officer used excessive force and said he had no right to do what he did. >> reporter: what escalated to this began as a traffic stop a block away from home for a couple of siblings and a brother-in-law. they explained they were just coming back from an errand. >> we went to the store to get some sour cream for tacos. he came to do something and he wanted it done so he was going to get it done. >> reporter: the police chief is responding with a written statement explaining the officers told the occupants of the car that it had suspended registration and it was going to be towed away. >> which i'm still trying to figure out how if i just got the car and everything was up to date and i just paid for the ta tags. >> reporter: police tell us she refused to exit from the car. they detained her two passengers. then her mother pulled up to the scene. they both got out and started recording cell phone video. at the same time detainee tyrone clayton junior was recording from the back seat of the patrol car. police say the two women ignored directions to remain with their car and repeatedly tried to push past the officers. >> he's walking toward her. her hands weren't cuffed. >> reporter: the officer slams cherish to the ground. >> that's a woman. you're double, triple her size. i mean, what ws the need for the use of force? >> what doesn't sit well with me is them saying that i tried to swing on the officer. you slammed my daughter to the ground dirt, which is hard as concrete on her face that was unnecessary. regardless of how old my child gets when you feel that they're being threatened you automatically go into mother mode. >> the young woman who was body slammed cherish thomas suffered minor injuries. women in the state legislature have been trying for years to eliminate sales tax on diapers and tampons but were stopped by former governor jerry brown. he vetoed these proposals twice saying the state couldn't afford it. the new governor is throwing his full weight behind this idea. >> reporter: an extension to parental leave, no taxes for tampons or diapers. that's all part of the governor's parents agenda. >> on the issue of menstrual products, yeah, it's not the most comfortable place to be standing talking about these issues. i'm just being honest about that. perhaps it's my irish catholic heritage but it's important. so guys, yeah, pay attention. our estimates that roughly 14% of after tax income of low income family, 14% just go to pay for diapers, just to pay for diapers. so this is indeed a big deal. >> reporter: a big deal for parents like jennifer who is also concerned about parental leave. >> i'm taking six months off right now. my company gives me about two months, three months and i'm taking the rest without pay. >> reporter: newsome also announced an extension to california's paid family leave from six to eight weeks. something that meg hennessy wished was available with her first pregnancy. >> i had some physical issues to deal with. not only was it an amazing time for me to bond with my baby. i had time to take care of myself and get back to a healthy place so i could go back to work. >> reporter: the san francisco children's council believes that program to be essential for a newborn and mother to recover. >> it promotes better breast-feeding outcomes. >> reporter: this proposal will also expand the definition of family and who can qualify to take this time. >> we also need to be able to care for our loved ones when they get sick. so we are expanding the definition of family member to include grandparents and grandchildren and in-laws. lyft pulled its e bikes in san francisco and nationwide last month because of problems with the brakes. an east bay man is suing because he broke his arm when he fell from one of the bicycles. >> reporter: sunday march 24th, outside the north berkeley bart station, here at the ford go bike racks. joseph connolly rented an electric bicycle and road four blocks to this intersection. >> i put the brakes on normally and the locked up and i went right over the ha handlebars. >> reporter: he's suing the company. >> they seemed to have a problem with the front brake hub, which is an unusual design. >> reporter: the problem -- >> appears to lock up from time to time. >> reporter: ford go bike operates the share system which also includes these pedal dikes. the company which is owned by lyft says in its website it has 7,000 electric bike plus models in the bay area. the company has in fact received complaints about the braking system from other riders. >> they acknowledged it but at the same time they said that they don't know of any known injuries, which is obviously not the case. >> reporter: meantime connolly had to take a month off as a barista here at the cafe in berkeley. connolly is back to work now on a modified schedule and making coffee like the other baristas here. but he says it's still painful and difficult. ford go bike says it is removing the electric bikes that caused the problem out of an abundance of caution, adding that reliability and safety come first. vick lee, abc 7 news. scientists tonight are confirming that the gray whale found at ocean beach died because a ship hit it. the whale was a 41-foot adult female, the ninth gray whale found washed ashore in the bay area in the last two months and the fourth to die because of a ship strike. experts say there are usually 5-10 gray whales found in an entire calendar year so this is a bit unusual. up next, return to paradise. >> what have you learned? >> a lot of progress, yes. >> reporter: progress in a region with so much more left to do. 18,000 structures burned here, 86 people died. the reminders are everywhere. the trucks, their dust and their noise fill the air and fema has hired a lot of them. >> a thousand trucks go up and down this road every day. >> reporter: they pull out load after load of debris. ron harmon drives one of those trucks. he's a local who lost his house. >> we've cleaned up 1400 out of 14,000 lots. >> reporter: it is staggering, it is daunting. so when a local business reopens that's cause for celebration. meehos mexican food did it by purchasing a food truck because pollution in the water supply has rendered their building unsafe. the patio is almost like old times. the new times may take a while, but the dead end attitude, long gone. >> we're just going to look for the future and hope for the best, huh, honey? live in paradise, wayne freedman. abc 7 news. in the east bay, the warriors just landed back in oakland following last night's loss in houston. the warriors comeback fell short in game four and the rockets won 112-108. the series tied up now at 2-2. some of the team is a little banged up but coach kerr says the team is excited for game five tomorrow night at oracle arena. >> that's one of the reasons we came back later today so the guys could get treatment this morning, have recovery day. hopefully everybody will be read did to roll tomorrow. >> after tomorrow night's game the team will travel back to houston for game six on friday and if there's a game seven, it will be back at oracle on sunday. >> pretty exciting. using social media appears to have a small impact on the lives of teenagers according to a new study. university of oxford researchers focused on 12,000 teenagers in u.k. researchers say school, friends and family all had a greater impact on a teenager's life satisfaction. soe previous studies reported a larger negative impact of social media. this latest study found that it accounted for less than 1% of a teenager's well-being and it also could have benefits. another study says pregnant women who eat nuts are more likely to have intelligent children. researchers from the barcelona institute of global health say mothers who ate more nuts during their first trimester tended to have children with a higher working memory, cognitive function and attention span. it's not clear just how many nuts a pregnant woman must eat. scientists say the benefit may be linked to high levels of folic acids and essential omega fatty acids that you find in nuts. abc 7 news was at the santa clara cal tran station. kais kaiser permanente employees passed out pap filemphlets with signs of stroke. the group also reminds us that diet and exercise can reduce our stroke risk. >> critical. that was nice of them to make that effort today. interesting day around the bay area. a little bit cooler, not as gloomy has yesterday. >> i'm just confused. it was misty and now it's sunny. what's going on. >> the skies opened up. we did have overcast skies this morning. but this afternoon we are seeing some sunshine as you will notice from our south beach camera. it is milder outside. 66 degrees in livermore. santa cruz is pretty lonely, not too many people there. there are still some clouds hanging tough near the coastline. we're in the mid 60s around places like mountain view, san jose 67 degrees. we did start to notice a little bit of a change in our pattern today. i hope you enjoy the sunshine tomorrow that's coming your way, because guess what's going to happen? we have chances of showers this week. just when you thought it was over, not quite. 40% chance on thursday. on friday there's a 30% possibility of seeing some wet weather around here. as we look across the bay here, light chop. lovely day here, blue skies there but not near the coast. low clouds are still stubbornly hanging on. they'll make that push as we expect around this time of year. you see the clouds on different levels. here's a look at the forecast. unsettled pattern late thursday into friday and bright and beautiful for your mother's day weekend. tomorrow morning sun comes up at 6:07. 40s, 50s. sunshine around the bay and inland by noontime. it is a warmer afternoon, low 60s to the low 80s. mid 50s to mid 70s as we head toward sunset. overnight tonight, expandi inii marine layer will lead to overcast skies. i don't think it's going to be quite as much as we saw this morning. 8:00 a.m. still some overcast conditions. by the time we head into the afternoon most of you will be enjoying the sun. your morning temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. watch out for fog and drizzle. mild conditions around concord and antioch. 80 degrees in santa rosa. peninsula and san mateo 71, breezy in half moon bay and 63 degrees. fast forwarding watching an area of low pressure in the the great basin could bring in a few showers. keep those umbrellas handy later on this week. the system does head toward southern california but the sierra will see a mix of precipitation. so take a look there. there's your rainfall potential morning fog giving way to a milder afternoon, chance of showers thursday night. showers still possible friday and then we'll go dry and milder as we head toward mother's day. low 60s to low 80s. minor changes later next week. you have an arsenal of cleaning items, watch the lightning strike at a kansas airport. this happened sunday night. no planes were damaged but the strike created a big hole on the runway. here's a closer look at the damage. the airport says lightning hits them twice a year. that's intense. we're going to shift geerar here. consumer news looking at steam mops. >> steam mops claim to do a great job cleaning and sanitizing. how well do they work?
