i'm amanda del castillo. more rain could mean flooding. >> cars are stuck in water. >> i'm kate larsen in marin county where flooded roads are causing big problems for drivers. abc 7 news starts right now. >> live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. let's take a live look out across the bay area. right now you can see the rain is falling, and it's very windy in some places. >> abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking round two of our storm. >> that round two is bringing thunderstorms, dan and ama, let's check out live doppler 7 right now. those storms are approaching the marin county coast. let's get you in a little bit closer and track those cells going into great net 1126, 11:38 it will be in santa rosa. head indoors if you hear thunder there are more cells that are developing off the san francisco coastline, and they are going to be heading northeastward. so be prepared. we are already seeing some pockets of moderate rain in the east bay. it's a level 3, a strong storm through tomorrow morning, drenching rain at times, thunderstorms, gusty winds 45 to 60 miles per hour and flooding. napa river at st. helena is under a flood warning, expected to flood, above flood stage. napa river near napa also under that flood warning. we do have flood warnings for many parts of the bay area, as you can see going into tomorrow, and a flood advisory for the santa cruz/san mateo coastline. the timeline includes a messy morning commute. cars stuck in floodwater, toppled trees blocking roads and overflowing rivers. we have live coverage tonight. >> let's get to jobina fortson who is live in sonoma county. >> i'm standing about 300 feet away from the russian river, but if you check out my feet, it looks like i am standing in it. the water has already moved up the roadway here. and it's going to get worse before things get better. we started our trip to guerneville from tt bay, and then didn't see much. until we reached sebastopol. standing water posed some problems, especially for the man who drove his jeep into a flooded street. the water was too deep for a tow. so a good samaritan got ahold of some chains and rescued the ride. but that engine is a goner. as the rains picked up, the trees came down, forcing crews to work along busy streets in the dark. >> people need to slow down. you see emergency vehicles on the shoulder. move over if you can. that's the law. >> as they continued the cleanup, we finally reached guerneville, where the school district is closed thursday. flooding is top of mind for many, especially business owners near the russian river. >> we keep communicating with our friends dan and nick that own johnson's beach about whether or not their beach is going to flood and whether or not it will reach their cabins. >> michael says this body of water is usually a parking lot for guests of johnson's beach. right now it's not a pretty picture, but he wants to assure visitors the water will recede, and guerneville will be open for business. the water gets significantly deeper the further you step back here and the river is projected to crest some time tomorrow evening. for now, reporting live in guerneville, jobina fortson, abc 7 news. i'm kate larsen here on lucas valley road in san rafael, and boy has the rain started to come down hard once again. i'm going to step out of the way. you can see this portion of the road is flooded. that car is not supposed to be driving through. that is dangerous. it is exactly what we've been seeing all night. not a great idea, especially because of the intermittent rain and the tides here which make these pools of water rise and then go back down again. >>roadwa tn around! nhe confusion of a road nader parvin lives in marin and thought his acura sedan could make it under highway 101 through this swelling puddle on lucas valley road in san rafael that police closed with signs and cones. >> i should have not driven through there. it's my mistake. >> you may think it's cool. you may think it's fun going through big puddles, but the eventuality is you get stuck. >> in sonoma county, the namesake creek is roaring with water, while businesses arm their storefronts with sandbags and floodgates. >> we do it three or four times a year. usually when the big storms such as this. >> he owns ludw avenue. >> it was about four feet of water on the street. and it was a very quick event. >> and we just saw four cars in a row go through the police barriers. there's the fifth car right there. even if you think you know these roads because you live in the area, you really don't know how deep the water is. so just not a good idea. i said it at 11:00 last night. i'll say it again. when you encounter these flooded roads, turn around or go around. life in san rafael, i'm kate larsen, abc 7 news. >> and amanda del castillo in san jose. i'm standing on the bridge off 87 as the guadalupe river, this is expected to be a trouble spot as more rain continues to fall overnight. and we were at another trouble spot here in the south bay earlier. take a look. soil acro sarad in recent strg wint ms. soak soil led to this massive mudslide on southbound 17 at sugarloaf road wednesday. it forced the overnight closure of the right lane. >> the threat is going to continue as long as we continue to receive rain. and the soil does not have an opportunity to dry out. >> san jose state professor laura sullivan green is an expert on soil. the rains come with serious slides and other hazards like toppling trees, especially along mountainous roads. >> these trees are damaged from years of drought conditions, and then you have them in saturated soil that is continuously staying wet from continuing rain. they're at risk of toppling. >> at the scene of wednesday's mudslide, caltrans crews identified trees that need to be removed before traffic flow can be restored. the chp is monitoring the mess. >> we never can anticipate it. we never know what's going to happen. we do know with heavy rainfall in the santa cruz mountains, trees are going to come down there. are going to be some slides. >> and down from the mountains, the national weather service has issued a flood watch for the guadalupe river area. minor flooding expected near the alma bridge between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> amanda, thank you. you're looking at the flooding triggered by today's storm in san pablo's rollingwood neighbor. thousands of gallons of water crept up sidewalks and into front yards on greenwood drive. earlier sky 7 was over las positas golf course. it had to shut down from flooding from cottonwood creek. san francisco's ocean beach where the great highway remains closed but lincoln way are flooded. and san francisco public works said there is no estimated time for the road to reopen. it's expected to stay wet through saturday. >> you're looking at pg&e's real-time electrical outrage map. right now more than 4,000 homes and businesses are without power. tonight's biggest outages are in marin county and the south bay. >> different story. >> i don't know what's going on with the bay bridge. >> they may have figured it out. vertical lights on the eastern span began to cycle on and off. sky 7 captured the flickering lights. the light installation was shut off as crews worked to fix the problem. it did not impact traffic. technicians did trace the problem to a short. they'll be back in the morning to complete repairs and figure out what caused that short. well, abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. that's why we're devoting this week to bart and focusing on your biggest issues with the frustrating. now san francisco is looking seriously at charging people for driving on city streets. the transportation authority approved spending $5,000 to study the idea. researchers will examine if charging tolls would change driving habits. well, just a crazy sight today in shasta county that one of our former producers caught on camera. >> redding is a community that might get 1 to 2 inches of snow every five to ten years. and last night we got 15 inches of snow in less than 12. while it might be absolutely gorgeous to look at, it is causing such a headache for the small community. tens of thousands are without power. you can see power starting to get restored to part of downtown redding. but for most people, especially those in the outlying hills, we're still going to be without power for a couple of da subvi a igorhoods are closed off. trees have fallen. power lines are down. the crews are trying to get to it as fast as they can, but obviously it's going to take a little while for them to get everything back up and running. >> that's wild. thanks to carrie loring who used to be one of our producers. a lot of weather going on outside. >> boy, yes. sandhya patel has been very busy this the weather center. >> it's only going to get serious as we head in the next few hours. live doppler 7. thunderstorms are firing up. so let's get you in a little bit closer here. off the marin county coast, we've been watching those cells. bodega bay is already getting heavy rain. 11:18, heavier rain as the lightning comes through 11:45 intoantasa. bohemian higayetting clobbered by some downpours. we're also tracking numerous thunderstorms off the coastline, heading into san francisco at 12:21. oakland, watch out at 12:35. more cells moving towards pescadero, la honda and redwood city by 1:00 a.m. do not be surprised if you do see some heavier rainfall and see some lightning strikes. south bay, you're starting to see some moderate pockets of showers now around cupertino east homestead road, san jose, santa clara. you haven't seen a whole lot until recently. this atmospheric river continues to aim its hose or its moisture plume right at us, which is why we are looking at rainfall totals like this so far. over 5 inches ben lomond, kentfield. 2 1/2 inches in san francisco. more than 2 inches in oakland. almost 4 in santa rosa. 1.46, livermore. 1.58 in concord. san jose just under a half an inch of rain. it is unbelievably mild buzz of the pineapple express. 50s and 60s. drenching rain tomorrow morning at times, gusts 45 to 60 miles per hour and watch out for those thunderstorms. russian river at g expected to be above flood stage tomorrow night, cresting well above flood stage with moderate flooding. navarro river also a big concern. moderate flooding expecting there tomorrow morning. cresting tomorrow afternoon at just over 33 feet. flooding concerns in the mountains as it is raining at lake level, falling on top of the snowpack. highest elevations seeing snow. so they are also watching the flooding concerns there. winter storm warning until 4:00 a.m. saturday for the sierra. 3 to 6 feet of snow is expected. hole? level is coming down to 3,000 to 4,000 feet. travel is not recommended. i would hold off until the storm has passed. and it is a wet view, stormy squu from our san rafael camera. colder system through friday with a wintry mix and a dryer pattern setting up early next week. midnight expect the thunderstorms. heavy rain 2:00 a.m. might not be able to sleep because it's so loud. but by 5:00 a.m., easing up. we will see ponding on the roadways. still some downpours around 8:00 a.m. not as widespread in terms of rain. 10:00 a.m. to noon, still could have an isolated thunderstorm or two. lighter, less widespread showers. one more band coming through tomorrow night. rainfall totals. additional rain, anywhere from about a half an inch in places like oakland to about an inch and a half in the wettest locations. flash flood watch until 10:00 a.m. flooding concerns remain high. we have a coastal flood advisory 4:00 to 8:00 with the high tide coming in. low-lying is certainly possible and a high wind warning and a wind advisory until 10:00 a.m. gusty winds could still take down more trees and power lines. tomorrow morning showers, windy, 40, 50s. tomorrow afternoon, some sun breaks, 50s, 60s. accuweather seven-day forecast. it's a strong level 3 storm tomorrow morning for valentines. cold showers. snow showers between friday and sunday. higher terrain, 2500 to 3,000 feet. president's day
