and president trump is looking to shift attention back to infrastructure today after the fbi directly contradicted it white house. sarah sanders initially said the background check on rob porter was underway when he resigned over domestic violence allegations. but fbi chief, christopher wray told lawmakers the investigation was completed in july and said they briefed the white house on the case four times. sanders now claims an obscure white house office was still looking into it. a second federal judge as blocked the administration from ending the dreamers program. the brooklyn based judge issued a temporary injunction as a california judge did last month. daca allows undocumented immigrants brought here as kids to stay here. it was scheduled to end march if i everth but that date may say they found a match. it led them to an army paratrooper in texas stationed at ft. bragg in fayetteville, north carolina. they say he has a family member who lived near the attack. >> he provided some key information that proved beneficial to your case. >> reporter: he is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated kidnapping. he is in custody in north carolina being held of mt. hood. one of them died after he fell as far as 1,000 feet. the other hikers were brought to safety hours after becoming stranded. now warm conditions caused falling ice and rocks. now rescuers worked as quickly as possible ahead of the storm expected this morning. over at the white house, now getting pushback from the fbi on the events leading up to the departure of rob porter. the fbi chief directory contradicted a claim that porter's background investigation was ongoing. he said the bureau had been updating the white house on porter for nearly a year. cecilia vega has more. >> reporter: president trump's own fbi director publicly contradicting the white house's shifting story about when they were first informed of former staff secretary rob porter. over and over again press secretary sarah sanders have said the fbi was still conducting porter's security background check when his two former wives went public with their claims of abuse. one releasing this photo of her black eye. >> his background investigation was ongoing. >> i can tell you that we were the process for the background was ongoing. and the white house had not received any specific papers regarding the completion of that background check. >> reporter: but the fbi says that's not true. in a stunning moment on capitol hill, fbi director, christopher wray told the senate intelligence committee his agents gave the white house reports on porter four times, as far back as last spring. >> the fbi submitted a partial report on the investigation in question in march. and then a completed background investigation in late july. >> reporter: the white house press secretary says they could have handled the scandal better. kelly tells "the wall street journal," he wouldn't have handled the situation any differently, saying, quote, it was all done right. the president wished porter well, saying he maintains his innocence, still no message to the women, despite our repeated attempts to ask. >> do you believe his ex-wives, do you believe rob porter's ex-wives, mr. president? does the president believe the women? >> again, the president takes all these accusations seriously. he believes in due process. above everything else, he supports the victims of any type of violence and condemns violence. >> we haven't heard him say that himself. >> again, the president dictated to me, specifically, that comment yesterday which i read to you guys. >> reporter: and this many days the white house is still refusing to say how many people close to president trump are working on a temporary security clearance but the director of national intelligence dropping a bombshell saying those people, on a temporary clearance should have limited access to highly sensitive information. cecilia vega, abc cia chief ahead of the nsa and director of national intelligence all telling congress that moscow is escalating its cyber assault on americans to undermine democracy and they said to see more fake get to the latest on what happened and love on this valentine's day, but we're going to start with tragedy that's taking place on the west coast. some tense rescues in the extreme conditions of oregon's highest mountain. >> a total of seven hikers ended up stranded on mt. hood 10,000 feet above sea level. one plunged hundreds of feet down the mountain. he later died at a hospital. we have more. >> reporter: a daring rescue attempt playing out on the top of oregon's highest peak, mt. hood. two climbers waving blankets and jackets and another performing chest compressions on a hiker who had fallen 700 feet. the situation turning more desperate as they shield the injured climber from falling rocks and snow. >> that was the report from one of the persons climbing. the quote was, it's like a bowing alley. >> reporter: the medic, repelling down to the climbers, air lifting him to the hospital. he later died. at the same time another rescue of a second group stranded on the other side. one of them injured as well. >> the ice was really bad. i saw a lot of people up ahead struggling. it started early on. yeah, just decided to turn back. >> reporter: this peak known for its loose rock and ice when it warms up. and they say it's been above freezing all week, which can make climbing very dangerous. abc news, los angeles. and united airlines is trying to figure out why a jet engine fell apart over the pacific. this is what it looked like before the plane landed in honolulu. the right engine is not looking so great. passengers say they heard a boom just hours after leaving san francisco and felt the plane rattling. flight attendants told them to brace for landing. all passengers are okay. some said they really did think they were going to die. and a delta flight from nigeria to atlanta made an emergency landing after an engine failed. they returned to the airport just after take off. passengers had to use emergency slides to leave the plane once it touched down. five people were hurt in that incident. and president trump's personal lawyer reportedly said he paid $135,000 out of his own pocket to a porn star who said she had an affair with trump. michael tells "the new york times," the payment to stormy daniels was lawful and he was not reimbursed by the president's campaign or the trump organization. he would not say why he made the payment or whether the president had been aware of it. the fbi has repeated lay contradicted claims by the white house. senior officials first learned about the allegations last week when porter's ex-wives went public and they repeatedly claimed his background check was ongoing. but, fbi director, christopher wray tells congress the investigation officially closed last month. the white house was briefed from d.c. to boston in first class. over just a few weeks in june, travel costs totalled more than $90,000 including a 1600 first class ticket from d.c. to new york, six times the price of coach and more than $36,000 for a military jet from cincinnati to new york so pruitt could catch a $7,00 flight to rome where he and his team took in the sights, visiting the vatican and sampling the local delicacies. just a few weeks ago another first class international trip, this time to morocco, this time on the taxpayer's dime. pruitt is now under investigation. just the latest in a string of
