>> reporter: in those final hours, katie was surrounded by her 8 and 14 year old daughters and 17-year-old son along with her siblings, mother and stepfather. >> she could see us, she could understand us. she could squeeze our hand. and she knew we were there, and we were giving her our love and support, and she was surrounded by love. >> reporter: this isn't supposed to happen, her family says. but this flu is showing no mercy. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. meantime, dozens of students and staff members have been sickened by a norovirus. we flew over mckinley school. 57 people got sick, 53 students and four teachers. symptoms were first seen when everyone came back from winter break last week. a parent whose child got sick says she hopes weekend disinfecting on the campus will get rid of the virus. the chp has called off the search for a man who lid office -- led officers on a search through a golf course. officers say the driver of the box truck got on highway 237 going the wrong way, the truck crashed, and the driver jumped out and ran toward the golf course. golfers were caught off guard. >> we saw this helicopter hovering over us, we wondered why is that helicopter hovering over us so much. they finally told us the bad guys are here, don't go on the 17 and don't go over there. it's a little frightening. >> sunnyvale police detained several people but determined the thief got away. police in sunnyvale arrested a san jose man for molesting a teenager and are looking for more potential victims. harry reed is charged with molestation and sending inappropriate content to a minor. he has worked as a part-time musicians assistant. a dog got stuck on a cliff. at about 11:00 this morning you can see buddy the labradoodle. he wandered around a little bit before a firefighter rappelled down. at first buddy did not want to go with him, but eventually i was put into a harness. buddy was not on a leash but did not appear to have any injuries. an update over the false alert over the weekend that cause panic in hawaii. an e-mail says the person has been moved to a job without access to the system. an internal investigation is under way as well. hawaii is changing protocols to prevent such an error from happening again and making it easier to cancel a false alarm. it took nearly 40 minutes to cancel it. we are hearing from bay area residents who were in hawaii when the alert went out. we are live at san francisco international airport where many just returned from the islands today. >> reporter: you can imagine, this was the talking many of them happy doing safe and sound. before baggage claim, they had never met. turns out they both attended the same weekend wedding in hawaii and both survived a false alarm they'll never forget. >> i'm just glad we're alive. >> i now, man. >> reporter: saturday people in hawaii received this alert on their phones. >> it said ballistic missile, this is not a test. i kind of got chills. i've never had a feeling like that. this is rileal. >> we looked outside the window, people were running for their lives. >> i googled how long does it take for a missile to land. >> reporter: 38 minutes later a retraction went out and he says he had the best day of his life. >> had a drink and played golf. >> reporter: they maidde a simir decision. he was on the beach when he got the alert and decided to stay right there. >> i figured if you've got to meet your end, standing at the beach, looking at the beautiful scenery, that was probably the best place to be. >> reporter: officials say human error is to blame for the mistake. the officer responsible response warning has been reassigned to a new post. state officials say three aey a suspending tests of the system until an identified says she was home when david and louise term louise terpin were arrested and charged with endangerment after deputies found several children shackled and chained to their beds. >> i kind of respected their privacy. but now, you know, that's it, it just breaks my heart. >> reporter: eyewitness news has obtained this picture of the family. the terpins and their 13 children ages 2-29. the investigation started when a 17-year-old girl who they say actually looked more like she was only 10 escaped from the home and called 911. >> always had a suspicion, because that house never looked like there was a lot of action in front of it. >> reporter: detectives say the home was dark and foul-smelling. the children inside were malnourished and dirt eyy. they only saw the older kids come out when there was a complaint about code enforcement. this neighbor says she saw both parents being arrested and then all of the children being walked out of the home. >> they were all in pjs, because it was early in the morning. they were very, very pale-skinned. almost like they'd never seen the sun, but i've seen a couple of the older ones, and it was mostly girls. and then kind of off. he died from pancreatic cancer. lead singer for the cranberries has died. ♪ >> that is deloris o'reardon singing the hit song "dreams." she passed away at 46. they rose to fame with songs like "zombie" and "linger." they were scheduled to appear in san francisco last year but canceled because she was allegedly having back issues. psan francisco-based airbnb and other home-sharing companies. the city-wide crackdown takes effect tomorrow requiring all hosts to be registered with the city or have their bookings canceled. carolyn tyler has that story. >> reporter: airbnb believes by tomorrow about 3,000 hosts like peter quan will have registered with office of short-testimorm rentals. quan has been renting out a room to tourists in his north beach home for years and supports the new rules. >> that would be a great improvement to the reputation and to the concerns of the cities that they have against these platforms. >> you should be ashamed of yourself! >> reporter: this did not come without a fight. airbnb and home away sued after the board of supervisors unanimously passed the new rules in 2016. aaron peskin was co-author and predicts a seismic change. >> experts at our office of short term rentals are confident that this is going to bring hundreds of units back into the rental market, maybe even as many as 1,000, which is a huge dent in the housing crisis in san francisco. >> reporter: airbnb tells us the vast majority of the thousands of hosts who have not signed up so far have been inactive for a while. the company believes there will be some bounce back and the hosts that are committed will follow the rules. >> our hosts have a stable environment, rules that are clear and understandable that comply with. >> reporter: all short-term companies are liable. penalties include a fine of $1,000 per day per violation. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 talking about images on beauty products and fake pg&e calls. >> a lot of important stuff going on today. the pg&e phone scam is making the rounds again. telephone scamsters are calling and threatening to cut off the consumer's pg&e service for unpaid bills. that's not how it works. pg&e will not ask for immediate payment by using threats and service disconnection. they will not ask you to pay with a prepaid card. if you are still concerned call pg&e directly about any issue. we have a recall of a mini van you need to know about. fiat chrysler is recalling more than 160,000 mini vans to fix a software problem that can make engines stall. the recalls, which are mainly in north america cover chrysler, pacifica vans from the 2017 model year with gasoline engines. the auto maker says there have been no injuries caused by the issue. however, there is one potentially-related crash. no more faking out customers with altered photographs. the nation's largest drugstore chain is banning photo manipulation in its store brand makeup marketing and promotional displays. cvs says it will require other makeup and beauty brands to commit to a photo manipulation ban by 2020. those that don't face having an alert label placed on the images. the company is calling that a beauty mark. with some 9600 stores nationwide, cvs is one of the nation's largest sellers of beauty products giving the company significant influence over makeup marketing. >> we're going to watch a lot of that is the biggest impact. we do have a high-surf advisory until 4:00 p.m. tuesday. breakers could reach up to 20 feet. the risk of rip currents is pretty strong. take a look at the temperatures. tomorrow morning the scattered showers won't amount to a lot. up to .2 in the north bay. hour by hour we go, around 9:00 p.m. you start to see a few showers developing around the san francisco peninsula coast. moderate rain north of mendocino, and then it starts to weaken and fall apart. so we'll go with scattered, light showers around 4:00 p.m. it's going to be hit or miss showers. some of you are not going to see anything. tuesday morning by 8:00, we just have fog and clouds left over. in terms of our next system, that one's going to be colder. rainfall totals are not going to be heavy. thursday afternoon you'll notice widespread rain going into thursday night pretty wet. snow in the sierra nevada, which is encouraging news. this continues into frei aiday even into late saturday. a winter storm watch for the sierra nevada. 8-12 inches above 4,000 feet. and accumulating snow down to 3,000 feet. you know this is going to be a cold storm. tomorrow morning, not terribly cold. mid-40s to low 50s. later on in the day, mostly cloudy, temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s, and a check of the accuweather seven-day forecast, morning showers tomorrow, giving way to clouds. another system, cold one for thursday into friday. breezy conditions, slight chance of thunder on friday. and a few showers may licknger into saturday. but we're looking for a level two storm
