Ntsb says that amtrak train that derailed was barreling down the tracks 50 Miles Per Hour over the speed limit when it derailed east of olympia, washington. This was the scene overnight. Investigators were able to get that dangling car out of the way there and some of those cars off of the highway. Made a little progress but obviously the scene is still there, the highway is still closed and they are still investigating. The train was actually going 80 Miles Per Hour when all of this happened yesterday morning and the president of amtrak says the positive train control, the technology thats supposed to slow it down, was not in operation on that particular stretch of track. Three people were killed and dozens of others injured. All but one of the trains 14 cars jumped the tracks. There was one person who in the car in front of us, they they were catapulted to the front of the car and they were pretty badly injured. They were unconscious, but still breathing. But what i could see from the window was that we had disconnected from the other the back portion of the train. I could see that someone had been catapulted from the train on to the ground. I have been watching for updates all morning long on this story. Officials do say it is still too early to tell why the train was going so fast. On to developing news this morning, a suspected robber has lifethreatening injuries after a Security Guard shot him in san jose. It happened just before 8 30 last night at the walgreens at first and santa clara streets. An investigation is under way. More alligations of sexual abuse at a south Bay High School. Today we expect to hear the story of two former students. They say that Presentation High School did not do enough to respond to students allegations. Matt keller live for us in san jose. Matt . Students at Presentation High School will be taking finals later today, but later this morning more alligations are coming out about alleged Sexual Misconduct against the prestigious catholic school. A press conference is being held later this morning at 11 00 a. M. Here in san jose. Attorney robert allert says a mother will discuss the sexual abuse of her daughter in 2014. A student from the 20062007 school year will discuss her story of Sexual Misconduct by her matt teacher. A letter from a former presentation teacher will be released alleging the high school responded to three Sexual Misconduct allegations by placing a higher priority on the schools reputation. All this have comes after two 1991 graduates recently came forward to accuse their alma mater of not taking alleged sexual abuse seriously. Reporter the School Principal says presentation never covered up or condoned any instance of sexual abuse and conducted investigations more than 25 years ago and more recently for please newer claims. The law that allows Berkeley Police to use pepper spray during violent protests may be repealed. According to sf Gate City Council members are expected to vote on this today. Their move follows pressure from the citys Police Review commission. Members believe that since factors like wind and volatile crowds can prevent officers from specifically targeting aggressor, they should not be allowed to use that deterrent at all. The Pittsburg City Council has voted to install new freeway cameras to stop freeway shootings. They will be put in place along stretches of interstate 80 and highway 4. Data will be collected from a system of shot spotters, cameras and license plate readers. Several people are raising concerns about privacy. There was a lot of vagueness about where all of this data is ending up. Investigators have revealed the amtrak train that derailed in Washington State yesterday was speeding, it was going 80 Miles Per Hour in a 30 zone. Just behind me that is the overpass where the train derailed, crashing on to cars commuting on this interstate just below us. Investigators here are now desperate to find out how a horrific accident like this could have happened. An Early Morning commute interrupted by chaos. Amtrak 501. Emergency. Emergency. Reporter amtrak train 501 had just left seated a and was heading towards portland. The ntsb says preliminary findings show the train was traveling at 80 Miles Per Hour near the curve where the speed should have been reduced to 30 Miles Per Hour. They are requesting all possible units. Theres bodies on the freeway. Reporter 13 of its cars careened off both sides of the overpass, crashing directly on to interstate 5 below. Oh, my god, that train is derailed. My car just started shaking really, really badly. Reporter daniel and his girlfriend were on their way to work when they saw the derailment. He rushed in to help. People were in shock and a lot of them initially when they got out of the train they just went and they sat down with their heads with their you know, their faces in the palm of their hands. Reporter the crash happened on a new line for amtrak. This train carrying its first paying customers. Just last month in the nearby town of lakewood the mayor warned about the possibility of a crash. When there is an accident this is this project was never needed. Reporter a federal report following a 2015 amtrak derailment noted a culture of safety lapses at amtrak. So this positive train control idea is something that was mandated by law long ago but amtrak has been very slow to implement it. Reporter crews have been working through the night and in this freezing rain. One official telling me when he first got to the scene he could not believe what he saw, he said it looked unreal, like someone had taken toy train cars and started tossing them around. We are tracking developing news on the death of a San FranciscoPolice Officer who killed himself after being pulled over by police in richmond. Abc 7 News ReporterAmy Hollyfield live for us at the Richmond Police department. Amy . Reporter it was a richmond Police Officer who was trying to pull over that San FranciscoPolice Officer. Here is a look at the scene. This is the view from sky 7 over the hilltop mall parking lot in richmond where this happened. A nineyear veteran of the San FranciscoPolice Department shot himself when he was pulled over by a richmond Police Officer and that San Francisco officer did die. The license plate on the car is registered to Antonio Cacatian who is an officer with the San FranciscoPolice Department. According to the San Francisco chronicle, the officer was under an investigation that involved multiple jurisdictions. No other details were released. The suicide happened at 1 30 yesterday afternoon. We will keep working this story for details. The sfpd did tell the chronicle that it offers its condolences to the family. If it passes the measure will then go to the senate for a vote and that could happen as early as today. Happening today the family of a san bruno woman will hold a News Conference in hopes of finding the driver who hit and killed their daughter one year ago today. The News Conference will be held at the intersection of san bruno and cherry avenues thats where a car hit 29yearold carly flynn while she was crossing the street. Her parents say she was walking home from starbucks at the bay hill shopping center. Police believe a white midsized suv hit flynn. The city of santa rosa will consider banning landlords from evicting low income residents. City Officials Say they received multiple reports that some landlords may be evicting existing lower income tenants in order to rent to insured residents displaced by the fires. The city council will discuss a ban on those evictions. They meet at 2 30 this afternoon. Steady progress is being made on the terrible thomas wildfire burning in Southern California. Containment now at 50 but the fire has grown to 423 square miles. I has reduced more than 1,000 homes to rubble. Cal fire says that weather conditions are improving for firefighters with lighter winds and higher humidity. That fire started two weeks ago yesterday. Here is where our rain is right now, its pretty impressive at times with rainfall rates of about a third of an inch an hour. Unfortunately its going to leave a lot of that to our north. As we head towards 7 00 this evening you can see a few pockets of green in the north bay, those are scout showers out ahead of the steadier rain which is light to moderate up in mendocino and lake counties and northern sonoma county. A lot of the yellow dissipates as it moves knew the north bay up until midnight. As it moves into the heart of the bay from midnight until about 4 00 you can see pretty much light to possibly some pockets of moderate and from 4 00 to 7 00 in the south bay, at the same time we will be watching some scattered showers across the north bay and about 9 00 those showers will hug the coast and then by noon the showers are just about over.
