the only platform right now that seems to be getting people's attention is athletes kneeling during the anthem. i'm doing my part and doing that in baseball. >> bruce maxwell said it was a decision that was a long time coming. he takes a knee after president trump blasted nfl players for doing the same thing. good evening i'm eric thomas. maxwell placed his hand on his heart as he became the first marria major league baseball player to join the growing protest. >> reporter: the a's won tonight and it was fireworks night. but the twitter firestorm between donald trump and athletes moved into major league baseball tonight. a's rookie catcher bruce maxwell became the first mlb player to take a knee durginhe t before this maxwell made it known he was not happy with donald trump's rhetoric. this morning maxwell tweeted don't be surprised if you start seeing athletes kneeling in other sports now, he said. comments like that from our president, wow. he then tweeted again later in the day saying inequality is being displayed bigger than ever right now as our president shows doeefr is not allowed. maxwell talked to the media after the game. >> this was the right thing for me to do personally. just from the den defers i've been through myself and the people i do know that have been victims of racial indeferences. >> let him take a knee. you going to ban him from baseball now like kaepernick? >> the athlete feel like they have a platform to make change but the people that are striking back, they're seeing what the fabric of america is like. >> reporter: and the oakland a's issued this statement which says, quote, the oakland a's pride ourselves on being inclusive. we respect and support all of our players' constitutional rights and freedom of expression. bruce maxwell said he spoke to his teammates and staff and family before making this very tough decision and it's a decision he says he plans to continue to do. meantime, a number of players, nfl players, are talking on twitter about a team-wide protest tomorrow. reporting live in oakland, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. before the a's incident tonight there was a dust up between president trump and steph curry. the president responded by withdrawing the invitation. abc 7 reporter lisa amin gulezian is live with more on the twitter back and forth and the statements. lisa? >> reporter: this was the focus after the warriors first practice of the season. one thing was clear, though the president seemed to uninvite just steph curry, the entire organization was with the star point guard and decided the whole team was unwelcome as well. steph curry's moves off the court are what prompted the president to post this tweet this morning. "going to the white house is considered a great honor for a championship team. stefen curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn." the team had scheduled to discuss the visit before the president's tweet. >> it's beneath the leader of a country to do go that route. it's not what leaders do. >> reporter: curry's teammates quickly coming to his defense and shifting the conversation away from political affiliation and instead toward something bigger. >> there was a respect for the office and also a respect not only from us, but from the president himself. >> you know, it's for going and call every player who took a knee a son of a [ bleep ], like huh? we're talking -- what? that don't even make sense to me. >> reporter: draymond green is talking about this. >> they say get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field right now, out. he's fired. he's fired! >> reporter: the president yesterday referred to nfl players kneeling to protest racial inequality and police brutality during the national anthem. >> the warriors will still travel to washington, d.c. to play the wizards and use the trip to celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. president trump repeated business call to fire nfl players who refuse to stand for the national anthem. roger goodell said the comments determine trait a lack of respect for the nfl, the presidents and players. and president trump said that goodell was trying to justify the disrespect certain players show our country and tell them to stand, it said. >> the san francisco 49ers called the president's comments, quote, callous and offensive. york went on to say the playe rs rights as d their u.s. citizens to park conversation and action to address social injustice. demonstrators held an antihate rally in berkeley as student organizers decided to cancel their event. but some speakers still plan to show up. >> reporter: free speech week at uc berkeley has been cancelled. but the controversial commentator held a press conference and posted it on facebook live. >> we will not be deterred or turned away. >> reporter: he said he was blinhed the student group pulled its sponsorship. he still plans to speak with or without its cooperation. >> uc berkeley has a poor representation for free speech and its students will grant knowing less than when they came in as freshmen. >> reporter: the university planned to let the event go on. the school released a statement that said in part the university was prepared to do whatever was ecessary to sport the first amendment rights of the student spending more than $1 million if necessary to keep the students safe. protesters gathered for a no hate in the bay rally. >> free speech is not hate speech. we want to be clear here. we donc in our communities. >> reporter: organizers said they are united against white supremacy and fascism. >> we don't want any hate speech in our communities. >> reporter: the protesters welcome the cancellation of the events but want the university to take a strong stand against racism and violence. they plan to be out protesting on sunday. we will be updating the situation in berkeley throughout the weekend. download the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts to be the first to know about breaking news. a wind driven vegetation fire destroyed two homes and several structures. the vacaville fire department posted this video on twitter. flames broke out at estate and john wayne roads this morning. 57 acres burned. the fire is 90% contained. winds helped push a vegetation fire to 12 acres before firefighters shut it down at 11:30 this morning at the clover flat landfill property. no structures were threatened. one firefighter was injured and transported to the hospital. it was breezy out there today was that a factor in the fires today? >> certainly was. and the wind will stick with us for a couple days along with dry conditions. the fire danger is high the next couple days. parts of the north bay have a red flag warning. those areas you see shaded in rhe red at this time until tuesday morning. the combination of gusty winds and low humidity is keeping the fire danger high. tomorrow aonllnoer dry out and the air especially in the north bay becomes bone dry. the highest threat between noon and 6:00 for the low humidity and breezy winds which means that fires can easily start and easily spread. along with the fire danger the numbers will be rising in the coming days. we'll talk about it more when we come back. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, two more earthquakes in mexico. and a surprise for a bay area hot dog vendor who had his cash confiscated. a crowd funding effort that netted tens of thousands of dollars. plus -- >> i heard some foot steps upstairs and next thing i know she is falling through the roof. >> a commotion at a san francisco liquor store tonight. the wea whole new place that'swe lookin' to get scared! with bats...and ghouls...and cars in disguise. i've cast quite a spell now...you won't believe your eyes! (laughter) the spell is cast. now halloween time is more spook-tacular than ever because it's in disneyland and disney california adventure parks! welcome back. an oroville couple was arrested after police say they left their 1-year-old son home alone while they went to a bar. the two are facing charges of public intoxication and felony child endangerment. they were arrested after they got into a fight. they told officers their son was home alone. they found him asleep in the living room. he is now in the custody of child protective services. what a difference two weeks with make. a hot dog vendor had his wallet and cash confiscated after being cited for not having a proper permit. that person today was presented with a check for $87,000. supporters say they can't understand why police turn a blind eye on other infractions after a bears game to focus on vendors. >> and people are jaywalking. we're okay with that. people are drinking. we're okay with that. but why are we going to pick on a young man who is providing for his family?
