solidarity of sergeant scott lunger and their case. >> i know there is no words that could even touch you know to help them. and, i mean, i don't have the words, but i really feel for them too. i do. >> reporter: courtpolice recovered dna samples from estrada's truck and expelled 9 millimeter casings on the floor. they recovered a 9 millimeter handgun near the shooting scene. and bullet holes from the second officer's gun into the side of estrada's truck are consistent with his wounds police say. >> to reserve judgment until all the facts are in, then we can answer those questions. >> reporter: the judge denied bail estrada's next court appearance for august 25th. in hayward, abc 7 news. >> scott lunger will be laid to rest with full honors next thursday. public funeral is scheduled to begin facebook page. now to a live picture from sky 7 hd. firefighters are making progress in the fire burning near lake berryessa. the fire grew only slightly overnight to 6900 acres. >> containment is now up to 20%. the communities of quayle ridge and canyon creek are still under mandatory evacuation orders. golden bear estates area and the area along county road 87 are open. that's where amy hollyfield is. >> reporter: look how close the fire came to this house it blazed where someone likes to sit and relax and take in the view. the firefighters saved it with countless others in the evacuated quail canyon area. this area is still not considered out of the golden bear estates neighborhood just got the all clear last night. some escaped to a hotel in davis. they say it is nice to be back. >> good to come back. it was a little disorienting to you know kind of be home but you can't go off to your house. it was nice to actually be able to come back and sleep in our own beds and get back to work. >> reporter: for them it is over, but firefighters are far from done. look at this new base camp for the strike teams. it looks like they're settled in for a long fight. the bay area is pitching in we saw crews from san francisco alameda, marin and santa clara counties. >> we know that we're going to need help in the future probably. we're happy to go out and help people in other places in their time of need. >> reporter: firefighters tell us a priority today will be trying to make it safe enough for all evacuees to return home. >> i know it can be frustrating not being able to get back into your home but i want everyone to know the instant commanders and law enforcement partners are working very hard to make it safe and let people get back in their homes as soon as possible. >> reporter: this is the second wildland fire here in a year. residents say they are getting pretty good at it. >> we're better prepared this time. that was helpful. so we kind of had -- we knew what we were going to pack we didn't nearly have as many discussions about what to pack and not pack when we were going out for the night. >> reporter: here is the view of the fire from those neighborhoods. more smoke today instead of flames they saw earlier. firefighters are happy to see this. and this weather, not a lot of wind today they're hoping it is going to stay that way. in selanno county amy hollyfield. right now highway 50 is closed because of a large wildfire burning 200 acres on both side of the highway and is now 30% contained. there are mandatory evacuations ordered from whitehall to the campground. fire officials said opening highway 50 is a priority for now any traveling to tahoe should use 80 or state route 88 instead. let's check on the weather. the happened last night in lafayette. about two hours west of baton rouge. 11 people were shot, two women died. and we just learned the gunman john houser legally bought his gun at a pawnshop and visited that movie theater before the deadly shooting. he was a drifter with a history of mental illness who threatened his own family and had anger toward women and ended up taking his own life. marcy gonzalez live now in lafayette where a news conference just wrapped up. >> in that news conference, police revealed new details with about the chilling moments in this theater saying the killer was methodical as he took aim over and over again. the terror of last night's deadly shooting in this louisiana movie theater still replaying in survivors' minds. >> everyone was just running down the stairs freaking out, climbing over chairs and people and everyone was screaming and there was -- it was awful. >> as police scoured the scene, still trying to figure out why a gunman stood up about 20 minutes into a screening of the movie "train wreck" and started firing a semi-automatic handgun leaving two women dead and nine other people injured before turning the gun on himself. >> we're trying to put every single piece of that together to try to find a motive. >> reporter: police calling the accused gunman 59-year-old john russell houser a drifter with a history of posting hateful, racist anti-semitic messages on the internet. inside his motel room near the theater, investigators finding disguises including glasses and wigs. but no explanation for why two families are now planning funerals. 21-year-old mayci breaux dying at the scene and jillian jackson pictured here on instagram pronounced dead at the hospital. >> had a vision, had a future, and it wasn't to die in this theater. >> reporter: other lives saved witnesses say, by two brave teachers pictured here on facebook. one taking a bullet for the other. >> the second teacher was shot anyway in the leg, had the presence of mind to pull that fire alarm. >> reporter: of the nine people injured, five are still in the hospital and doctors say they all are expected to survive. we're live in lafayette, louisiana, murder/suicide. over the scene on songwood road after the shooting at 5:30 last night. a woman who lives in that home told police her daughter and son-in-law were arguing because they had just gotten a divorce. police not released the identities of anybody involved. police in san francisco are investigating an accident involving a muni bus. witnesses tell abc 7 a woman was hit by the bus on south afternoon. the vallejo times herald is reporting a jury convicted henry smith jr. of first degree murder with special circumstances for the 2011 killing of vallejo police officer jim capu. he was shot down while running down smith after a bank robbery. the judge removed a jury for bias against police after the juror allegedly called the bailiff a, quote thug with a gun. earlier a juror had to be replaced because of a health emergency. more details on the story as it unfolds on twitter. the crowds have been nonstop during first week of business at a north bay fast food restaurant with a twist. saying the closure of the popular municipal pier in berkeley is affecting them. the pier is closed until further notice because inspectors found significant structural damage. the city of berkeley says it will take quite some time to thoroughly assess the damage on the 3,000 foot long pier before the 89-year-old structure reopens. the berkeley marina bait and tackle shop isn't happy about the closure and says business is already slowing considerably. >> there is a lot of people that can't afford to slip here or accord to own their own boat. so those are the people that we more target that come out and fish off pier. >> right now there is no timetable for when that pier will reopen. interstate 10 between los angeles and phoenix is back open today. closed sunday after a surge of storm water watched away bridge support on at least three bridges. crews worked around the clock to shore up the span over tex wash, which is a normally dry gully that swells with rainfall sunday. >> i hold 4:30. the man accused of killing hayward police sergeant scott lunger made his first court appearance today. mark anthony estrada facing first degree murder charges after he opened fire on sergeant lunger early wednesday morning. katie was in the courtroom and tweeted this picture of hayward police officers as well as estrada's family. we'll hear from that family coming up at 5:00. also at 5:00 abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joining us live near lake berryessa where smiling evacuees from the wragg fire are returning home. the latest on the fire fight there. authorities in lafayette louisiana, are trying to figure out why a man methodically opened fire inside a movie theater, killing two women and taking his own life. brandi hitt looks at similarities in these cases. >> reporter: the deadly shooting rampage inside this louisiana theater is the latest in a series of recent mass killings across the country. just last week in chattanooga, tennessee, mohammad youssuf abdulazeez opened fire on two military facilities killing five u.s. troops. and in charleston south carolina, nine were gunned down at the had historic emanuel ame church last month. experts say most mass killers feel underappreciated, angry at the public and want recognition. >> it is your fault i'm having a problems i'm having and i'm going to take them out on you. >> reporter: lieu lu's theatouisiana's shooting similar to the one carried out by james holmes three years ago. >> it takes your breath away to realize someone else has chosen that particular venue. >> reporter: holmes convicted, now in court, awaiting a possible death sentence. and then there is newtown connecticut, 20 schoolchildren's lives cut short in 2012. president obama says the greatest frustration of his presidency is not getting gun control legislation through congress. >> we do not have sufficient common sense, gun safety laws. even in the face of repeated mass killings. >> reporter: experts say while most mass shootings are domestic violence cases, the number of high profile shootings in public is going up. whether the killer's focus is to harm as many people as possible or for media attention. brandi hitt, abc 7 news los angeles. stay with abc 7 for continue continuing coverage of the louisiana theater shooting. the family of kate steinle is headed back to the bay area today after meeting with east bay congressman. mr. steinle testified on capitol hill several times this week calling for tougher immigration laws. there has been controversy over a new republican bill to punish sanctuary cities like san francisco by pulling federal funding for various programs. democrats have been supportive of steinle's call for change but believe commencive immigration reform would be a better solution. a lost pregnant bombwoman who gave birth alone in the woods this month has been arrested because she and her baby tested positive for meth. amber claims she only took meth to get an energy boost after delivering her daughter herself. she was stuck in that forest for three days before she was found by authorities. after she sent a signal fire she said her daughter is healthy, but the baby has been pledged to foster care. she said she got lost in the forest while traveling between casinos s casinos. hillary clinton found herself in the middle of another investigation. what that could mean for her run for the presidentry. >> reporter: hillary clinton in new york briefly address the saga. >> there has been a lot of inaccuracies. we're all accountable to the american people to get the facts right. and i will do my part. >> reporter: but there are new questions about whether sensitive or secret government information was mishandled when hillary clinton used a private e-mail account and server to conduct business while she was secretary of state. that is the question to inspectorers serer ers general who looked through her e-mails. >> i did not e-mail any classified material. >> reporter: clinton and her campaign aren't budging. her spokesperson says she followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials at all times. >> did she send classified or sensitive material on her e-mail. the second issue which could be as significant is what was released and how it was released. >> reporter: the state department is looking over more than 55,000 pages of e-mails turned over by clinton at the department's request. the big question, when were certain e-mails classified. and were there some e-mails that were not originally considered to be classified when clinton was secretary of state that had their status changed at some later date. >> the clinton people said from the beginning, nothing to see here. everything was appropriate. now you have inspectors general for two different major government agencies, federal agencies saying not so fast. >> reporter: another batch of e-mails are expected to be released by the state department nation tour of africa. the president will focus on deepening economic and security partnerships between the continent and its people. it is a historic first visit as president to his ancestral homeland where his father was born. president obama is expected to spend time with family and address the kenyan people on sunday. travels to ethiopia monday to meet with leaders and attend a state find in the sand and how it can make you sick. >> reporter: sharks riptides, but vigilance may be needed in the sand too. >> sand is a moist environment so bacteria can thrive there. >> reporter: while most attention goes to water quality, a new study from the university shows bacteria in sand can live longer than bacteria in the water and older study links playing in the sand to getting sick. >> if you swim in water with urban runoff, you're more likely to get sick. >> think about how dirty the sand is? >> no. >> did you ever eat the sand? >> yes, she does. >> i can hear it crunching. >> we went to three popular california beaches and collected samples. then brought them to stanford where the doctor and her team analyzed them. what did you find? >> well, we tested the three samples you brought in and we found different concentrations in all of them. >> she found e. coli. these are indicators of more serious pathogens that can cause infections and gi issues. >> does the presence of this type of bacteria in the sand concern you at all? >> when we find it in really high concentrations it does concern me. those were quite high and i'm curious as to why. >> if you were at south beach how would you behave differently knowing what you know? >> i wouldn't let any of my kids eat the sand or play in it in any way. >> she said she found serious bacteria at 15% of beaches she sampled. like staphylococcus and salmonella. >> we find these in beaches all over the country and all over the world. >> reporter: while regulators haven't determined the level of bacteria in sand to pose a health risk there are steps you can take. have kid plays in wet sand it is washed clean while dryer sand isn't. stay away from sand exposed to storm drain runoff and creeks. and if you're going to have a picnic at the beach, don't take a vacation from hand hygiene. becky worely, abc news, california. a warning from park rangers after a woman got too close to a bison. brandy burgess was with getting better, but slowly. only one structure, an out structure, has burned. and nothing about this fire that has been easy. not the terrain, not the weather, not the wait for evacuees. some of them went home today. they cued up like hungry customers at a drive through, except they weren't hungry as much as anxious. >> i've been waiting probably 36 hours to get back in. >> hence the relief tempered with anxiety when route 128 west of winters finally reopened allowing people who ran hurriedly from these flames on wednesday to get to their homes and look around. >> it was like right in my
