>> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 12th. >> let's start with a quick at the weather. here's leyla gulen in for lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. we are shaping up to be a beautiful day here in the bay area a look from our emeryville camera. across the water, towards the golden gate bridge. we have patchy cloud cover hyping over the north bay right now. looks like the clouds there slowly starting to dissolve over plenty of sunshine and peaks from sfo. we aren't tracking any delays. what we have are pretty mild condition, a beautiful start to the day. 62 degrees in san francisco. oakland at 65 right now. 67 in mountain view and the mid-60s for san jose, morgan hill and half moon bay just a touch cooler at 64 degrees. leyla, thank you. we have developing news in aurin da. a violent highway collision has killed at least one person. the crash happened just before 3:00 this morning on highway 24 near the eastbound stevens drive off-ramp. it appears the car may have hit a tree, which practically tore it apart. all lanes of the eastbound 24 are now open. investigators are still on the scene trying to determine the cause of that horrific crash. happening now, crews in san francisco are continuing their around-the-clock work on doyle drive. access route to the golden gate bridge is scheduled to reopen tomorrow morning at 5:00. bridge officials say they will give us an update later this morning. meanwhile, take a live look at the bridge. the reopening of doyle drive can't come soon enough for drivers. abc7 news reporter janet has the story. >> construction on doyle drive is well underway. crews are hard at work, pouring cement, paving the roadways, striping and installing medians. the work is being done to create a saver, wider connection known as the presidio parkway. however, some are calling all the work an obstacle to get to the golden gate bridge. the dps couldn't figure out what to do because there's no alternative route. we gave up and parked by the palace >> many tourists weren't sure what to make of the mess but they decided to make the best of it. >> we can't be on it, we are taking pictures of it. at marina boulevard, it got so confusing, drivers had to be directed to take alternate routes. and gary and 19th, they had to be directed by a traffic officers. >> some places they get stuck because there's no way to get around the traffic. we decided to conduct our own tests. driving along the bring from the northbound lane on the presidio was a breeze but the southbound lane traffic was not as light. it took us 35 minutes to get to toll plaza. and 50 minutes to sausalito. >> i'm not going to the city. i mean that's just about plain and simple. it's ridiculous to try to fight the traffic. >> if you are expect this to be the last of the construction, think again. transportation officials say after monday, future work and lane closers are on the horizon. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> ferries between marin county and san francisco were a little more crowded than normal last night because of the doyle drive closer. some people from the north bay told us they decided to skip driving. this they did not want to have to deal with the traffic jams. for some people it was their first time taking a boat across the bay. and they say it won't be their last. >> we loved the ferry. it was a great day. i would come back on the ferry yeah. i would do it. >> it's very comfortable, it's scenic, and it gets you here just about as fast as driving. >> transit authorities have added country's top drug lord has escaped from brings sop again. guzman got out of a maximum security prison last night through an elaborate mile-long tunnel from his cell that included ventilation and stairs according to security officials. authorities say he was last seen in the shower area, and when they went to check his cell, he was gone. guzman escaped from prison in a laundry cart back in 2001. he was arrested, rearrested last year. >> developing news out of shasta county. a man who is called a person of interest in his daughter's disappearance is on the run. 1 is 23-year-old matthew graham. he disappeared yesterday. he had cash and a gun stolen from his mother. authorities say he left after a face fire used by his six-month-old daughter, ember, was found in another town. ember has been missing since july 2nd. in walnut creek, search teams hope to find a missing woman who suffers from dementia. this is video of the woman just before she vanished after leaving her apartment friday afternoon. she speaks only russian. she has medical issues. search dogs have followed some leads. >> the last canine track we had was heading northbound on the iron horse trail and it ended in the tree area. we continued on up there with an extensive search. >> search efforts include about 50 volunteers with the contra costa sheriff's office. here's another look of last night. helicopters were flying above walnut creek using heat sensing equipment. >> another warning this morning. 86-year-old woman has not been seen since last night at his home. he's 5'2", 129 pounds, believed to be wearing a white t-shirt blue jeans and an olive jacket. he also uses a cain and his medical condition sometimes makes him disoriented. if you spot him please call the almeda county sheriff's office. two santa rosa college students accused of trying to shoot and kill a suspected prostitute were stopped by police and then let go the night of the crime. the shooting was at a motel in rohnert park last thursday. an officer pulled over 22-year-old ronnie threadgill and his roommate, koa sibley, at a nearby fast-food restaurant minutes after the shooting. officers let them go to assist another officer on the call. police say a surveillance photo shows threadgill near the crime scene and that's what led to the arrest friday. both were training to try out for the college football team and the coach cannot believe they are accused. >> i was shocked and very sad. very sad for the person who was injured. >> threadgill is charged with attempted homicide and sibley faces an accessory charge for driving the get-away car. the victim is in the hospital, unable to speak. the motive is not known >> now to the race for the white house. republican presidential candidate donald trump took his steam-rolling campaign to arizona where he found a friendly audience for his immigration views. and while democrats are cheering from the sidelines, some republicans are cringing over the direction their party is taking. here's chuck sievertson. >> we have to secure our borders. we have to do something to take back our country. >> it's the theme that's now fueling donald trump's campaign for president. >> i didn't think that the immigration thing would take on a life like it has. >> but it has. along with the size of his crowds and his poll numbers. trump is surging. now near the top of the gop presidential pack, closing in on >> former florida governor jeb bush. >> you know, the sanctuary cities, do you know he had guy of them when he was governor in florida? i didn't know that. >> his message, illegal immigrants are a clear and present danger. >> they are coming from all over the world. you have people coming from the middle east that are going right through mexico and past the border. >> the billionaire real estate developer introduced a man who said his son was shot dead by an illegal immigrant. does >> found out the guy was on his third gun charge. and they have somebody illegal in the country on his third gun charge. he had been arrested three times already. >> and trump also shared this phoenix, arizona stage with the sheriff joe. known to be tough on illegals. he has rattled nerves on both sides of the issue. even republicans are keeping him at arm's length. >> he also said it in a way that's going to kill my party. >> from trump, a few words of conciliation. because of this eruption from the colima volcano. ash and sinnedders have been raining on the region since thursday. the airport in the town has been closed. mexican officials describe the volcano's movements as atypical. the interior ministry said it's showing signs similar to a major eruption back in 1913. the colima volcano is also known in mexico as the volcano of fire. an 11-year-old boy scored a white house invitation after standing up to his internet bullies in a very public way. >> "i'm surprised he fits in the front seat. squeal, piggy, squeal!" i hope that people don't bully other people online anymore and that this helps. and people that have been bullied, don't let these words affect you. >> that is logan fairbanks. he read a series of cruel comments people have made about him online. in reaction to a series of videos he and his dad posted on youtube. the video caught the attention of white house senior advisor valerie jared. she said change happens when ordinary people do extraordinary things. when people have logan's courage and speak up. the fairbanks then wrote, "thank you so much for your kind words. i can't believe our video hit this close to the white house. we are in awe right now." and jared responded again, "if you are ever in d.c., please stop by the white house and say hi. logan may be a future occupant one day." happening today, the raiders are hosting a football safety clinic for parents. the raiders are teaming up with usa football to present the clinic. parents will have a chance to speak with medical professionals about heat, hydration and concussion awareness. they will also learn about the importance of tackling techniques. the clinic starts at noon at the raiders facility on harbor bay parkway in almeda. many historians call the korean war the forgotten war. yesterday san francisco moved one step closer to helping people remember those who served. abc7 news was in the presidio from korean's counsel general to san francisco presented a $1 million check to help build a korean war memorial. many korean war vets gathered and remembered their fallen comrades during the ground break fourth the memorial. >> this is the first step the real first step of getting this job done so it's a very pleasurable day and i'm pleased to see the people that turned out. >> more than 36,000 people lost their lives in the korean war. it lasted from 1950 to 1953. 326,000 americans served in that conflict. >> happening today, the second day of the avon 39, the walk to and the street fair comes to the tenderloin district. these are scenes from other sunday streets. in the tenderloin from 11:00 to 4:00 you can enjoy a giant jenda, a beanbag toss and street bowling. there will be healthy eating information and demonstrations. >> also happening today, the second day of the avon 39, the walk to end breast cancer, will wrap-up. walkers past right outside our sbc7 studios yesterday on the embarcadero. at the end of the day participants will have walked 33.9 miles raising funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. each walker will raise at least $1800 and the money will be donated to local breast cancer organizations. san francisco's botanical garden in golden gate park is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. part of the fun is called flower piano. a couple of bay area artists have rolled out some grand pianos for anyone to play. >> within the 55 acres of the san francisco botanical garden, something magical has appeared. >> having the piano out of the living room, out of its normal context, it makes people realize that a piano is a special thing. >> these two men are the duo behind the idea of having twelve pianos for twelve days nestled among nature. >> corina is a tourist from mexico. >> botanical gardens are perfect for inspiring music and inspiring each other. the pianos have come from many places. mary's mother bought this one 75 years ago. now it's here donated by mary as the botanical garden celebrates its 75th anniversary. >> i'm not, you know, tearful about it at all. i'm so happy it's out here in this beautiful setting. >> i tried to put the pianos in the most dynamic places as possible in the garden. >> over the course of the days professionals will be out here to tickle the ivies, but a lot are people are like jesse, who has been playing for how many heading out to santa cruz right now. and it's really quite sunny. make sure you pack the sunscreen because the u.v. index is quite high. there's not much of a breeze. you should be fairly warm as you make it over to the coast. right now 5 mile-an-hour wind gusts. westerly wind at half moon bay. sfo9 miles an hour. 6 miles an hour at novato and gustier in bayfield. 63 degrees in san francisco. as you get closer to the ocean 63 degrees, as well. 62 in sunny side. for the rest of us in the bay area, in the lower to mid-60s. 69 degrees we are checking out in palo alto. that will turn into mid-70s by later this afternoon and 70 degrees already in tracy. we are below normal in the inland areas and it's all because of this area of low pressure. a trough that has been pushing its way to the eat. we will experience another high that's come in later this week that will eventually bring us warmer conditions, the 90s for inland temperatures. today we have a game at&t park when the giants take on the phillies. first pitch at 1:05 under some sunshine. 66 degrees is going to be your starting temperature. it will stay the same once you leave the ballpark. again, bring the hat, you will need it. the rest of the temperatures for the state, 88 in chico, 73 in tahoe. sunshine over los angeles, 79 degrees. hot in palm springs, 104. 73 degrees and mild in san diego. the bay area highs, 80 in san sonoma. 830 degrees in castro valley. 77 fremont, 74 san leandro, and the warmer areas, 86 in brentwood, 79 in livermore. 80 degrees in san ramon. our overnight lows, they will be mild a marine layer will be pushing in toward the bay area. it will dissipate, much the same conditions for tomorrow and tuesday as well. the temperatures only going to reach about 60 degrees in san francisco. in the reward for a stolen pair of judy garland slippers. the sequenced ruby red slippers were worn by judy garland's character dorothy in the movie "wizard of oz." they were taken from the judy garland museum in grand rapids minnesota, two years ago. they could be worth $2 million to $3 million. and carrie underwood had to break into her own car to rescue her four-month-old son and dogs. it happened yesterday morning. underwood said the dogs accidentally stepped on the window locks, trapping everybody inside. she is not saying how, but she broke a window to get in. everyone is okay. underwood trying to burn away with exception of parts of the coast and the north bay. as we take a look at santa cruz beach. stinson beach-goers are heading out and enjoying the sunshine. winds are relatively calm. the heat will warm you up today. i'll have the accuweather seven-day forecast straight ahead. carolyn. >> thank you leyla. a scary incident involving two united airline flights including one from san francisco, has aviation experts scratching their heads this morning. no the planes did not collide or even come close to one another, but they did experience severe turbulence over the same airport at different times. here's devin dwyer. >> the severe turbulence seemed to strike out of nowhere, and jolted two united airline planes just minutes apart, both on final approach. united's 1597, puerto rico to washington dulles. about 20 minutes from landing and some passengers still newspaper the aisle. >> we report injuries. >> one woman injured said to be waiting for the lavatory. two flight attendant were also hurt. the boeing 737 touching down just before 4:48:00 p.m. the pilots immediately calling for medical assistance. three people were treated on the scene and taken to the hospital for further evaluation. >> also we have turbulence again. >> just 14 minutes later, a second plane united 1774 from san francisco, also rocked by turbulence, descending above the same airport. the pilot requesting ems but then cancelling the call after passengers appeared okay. >> the rare part of this is having people thrown around and possibly injured in two different airplanes going through the same patch of turbulence of the sky at the same time. we don't know where they were yet on this particular sequence but that is a very unusual occurrence. >> the faa said 58 people are injured by turbulence on u.s. flights each year. most of them not wearing their seatbelts. this morning the passengers and crew of the united plane are thank you full more people weren't up in the aisles and injured. abc7 news, washington. >> the naacp has lifted a 15-year, economic boycott of south carolina after the confederate flag was removed from the state house grounds on friday. the flag's removal came weeks after the shooting deaths of nine people at a historically black church in charleston. the accused killer has been pictured with a confederate flag. the civil rights group's boycott began in 2000 when the flag flew above the state capitol building and continued after it was moved to a flagpole at the state house. supporters of the flag insists it symbolizes southern heritage, not hate. >> some think donald trump may be on to something. he has been rising in the polls on his views on immigration calling illegal immigrants a clear and present danger. she said trumps overall message is justified. >> i think donald trump taps into an anger that i hear everyday. people are angry that a common-sense thing like securing the border or ending sanctuary cities is somehow considered extreme. it's not extreme, it's common sense. we need to secure the border. >> she lost to senator barbara boxer back in 2010 and is banking on her corporate experience to appeal to voters. she headed hugh let packer for 7 years, eventually playing off 7,000 american workers. people in greece are continuing to lineup everyday at atm's to pulmonary out of the banks. the banks, according to some, barely some enough money in they're vaults to get the country through the week. greece has asked for a bileout over three years but many leaders don't think it's enough and some don't trust greece to deliver on what they promise on economic reforms. >> this marks the tenth year abc7 has celebrated student achievement with the stars scholars program. every year abc7 recognizes seven bay area high school seniors for their extraordinary achievements and rewards each a $1,000 scholarship towards his or her college education. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez introduces us to a star scholar from san carlos whose teachers, coaches and classmates consider an inspiration. >> recent graduate riley quinn is considered a legend on the st. francis high school campus in mountain view. >> hey! >> pretty good! >> from his standout performances on the grid iron, baseball diamond and basketball court, to inside the classroom and around his community. this san carlos teen exudes star quality. >> his work ethic is pretty incredible, especially being a three-sport athlete here. he's obviously an extremely smart young man. never got even an a-minus. he's always gotten an a. >> the 2015 abc7 star scholar is bound for m.i.t. in the fall to pursue his love of business and football. >> academics has always been the number one priority. what is better than m.i.t.? i want to challenge myself academically and i have the opportunity to play football four more years so i'm looking forward to that. me, having been born with one hand, that's pretty much the reason, in my opinion, i have such a strong work ethic and the person i am, my character today and values and belief. i would always have to work harder and do better than other kids just to be looked at the same and viewed on the same playing field. work harder and get the basic skills, how to catch a football, how to throw a about baseball and just to be able to play the sport and then i would have to use my athletic ability to excel. >> do you call it a disability? >> on the surface you can call it a disability but i think it's a blessing. >> riley is an inspiration to all that he meets. >> i love the way i am, i wouldn't want to change it a the all. >> he wants to continue to giving back to others by sharing his story and proving anything is possible with a lot of hard work and even festival in the florida keys. it's an annual event broadcast using special underwater speakers. a record swimmer, who is very comfortable in water, calls it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. >> you couldn't hear it this well if you were at a concert sitting in the front row and actually watching the fingers of the guitar. this is almost enhancing it. it's very magical and distinct underwater. >> one of the songs was from her personal soundtrack during her cuba to key west swim. janice joplin's "me and bobby mcgee." maybe that's what helped her do what she did there. >> that is so neat. i would love to see that. well, if you are heading out to the beach today, it is going to be a lovely day. it's about 64 degrees in santa cruz. going to be about 70 later on today. as we take a look right now that is a peek at the embarcadero towards the bay bridge. and the sunshine really melting away those clouds. we do have some clouds that will stick around with us, predominantly in the north not a cloud in the sky. temperatures in san jose right now, 66 degrees. we are at 63 degrees in san francisco. oakland 65. 67 in mountain view. 64 degrees at half moon bay. in other parts of the bay area, as we take a peek from our mt. tam camper. ed on top there, and the clouds. it's hyping over some of the hill tops a bit. looks a bit gray. however, temperatures are going to warm up as the afternoon continues with the sun burning those clouds off leaving us with partly cloudy skies today. 66 novato. 67 in fairfield. concord 68 degrees, as well as livermore at the moment. and that's the area of low pressure i was telling you about. so it's moving on to the east and to the north. another area of low is going to come in towards the bay area but then it's going to be replaced with high pressure later on this week, bringing us some warmer conditions. so it's going to be a mixture, a mix of clouds and sun for the next couple of days. then mostly sunny conditions later on. today you still need the sunscreen, clouds or no clouds. giants take on the phillies at 1:05. 16 degrees but the u.v. index is high. even though it might seem a little cloudy, you still need protection and bring a hat as well. 83 degrees in los gatos. the high 77 degrees in santa cruz. 79 degrees in mountain view. 78 in palo alto. 78 redwood city, cooler along the coast. pacifica 64 degrees. 69 degrees in downtown san francisco. north bay, we are going anywhere from the mid-70s to the low 80s, even the mid-80s 895 degrees in cloverdale. 83 in lake port. sunshine for calistoga napa sonoma. 80 degrees tend to during our summer times in the bay area. so it is a change for us. but once we get closer to wednesday, thursday friday, we will be feeling the heat like a lot of other folks around the state. reporter jonathan bloom was on a mission, taking a look at a spacecraft barreling toward pluto and what scientists are hoping to learn from it. >> this 2006 launch of the spacecraft new horizons was the start of a long journey. >> it's the fastest spacecraft we have ever launched from earth, and even so it's taken 9 1/2 years to cross the 3 billion miles from earth to pluto. >> it is known as the ninth planet and recently demoted to a dwarf planet. artists have imagined what pluto might look like. now new horizons is sending back its first real images, including dark spots no telescope has seen before. >> we don't know what the dark stuff is. we just don't know. >> do you think we might might find out on in fly by. >> i think we might. but they might be a little nervous. the spacecraft's computer briefly froze up over the weekend. engineers scrambled to restart it before the critical moment on july 14th. >> pluto isn't large. you are coming on to it at 30,000 miles an hour and suddenly you are there and it's over. >> but in in a brief blink of an eye he will learn volumes about something he's been trying to replicate here for years. the complex organic matter mixed in. >> what you make in the laboratory is white, yet pluto has color. pluto has some mix of brown, yellow and reddishness. so what is that stuff? >> recreating pluto's cold atmosphere, he's made tiny vials of what might be pluto dust. the cameras might tell him if he is right or wrong. >> every time we've flown past a planet or its moons or a comet or astroid we've been astonished. >> that my soul after a tough day. all you have to do is say, "god i'm an open vessel and i'm ready to receive" and he will change your perspective. why can't god use you to do something great? why can't you fulfill your destiny?
