Potential winter weather today has already impacted some events scheduled for this week. Statewide, the General Assembly has gone home due to the winter storm, but Governor J.B. Pritzker will still give his budget address today. The National Weather Service says a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until midnight tomorrow night. Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with total snow and sleet accumulation of two to five inches and ice accumulation of a tenth of an inch, with locally higher amounts possible. Hazardous conditions could impact travelers during the morning or evening commutes when the watch takes hold, especially on Thursday. The governor has issued a disaster declaration ahead of the storm, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency will coordinate state response efforts from Springfield. The Edwards County Spelling Bee was scheduled to be held tonight at 6:30, but it has been postponed to a later date. Details on the new time and location will be forthcoming. Participants from Albion Grade School will include Eli Koretge, who won the school bee, and Jenna Shaw, Alice Robb, and Ashlyn Weaver, who finished in a three-way tie for second. West Salem participants include school-winner Xander Wilkerson, Jackson Weiler, Mathias Wilkerson, and Eli Greathouse. Fairfield Community High School will hold a "Get Acquainted" night for eighth grade students and parents tonight at 6 in its east gymnasium, weather permitting. Teachers and coaches will be stationed at departmental tables to answer any specific questions students or parents may have, and information about FCHS policies, procedures, course information, and extra-curricular activities will be presented. The IDPH reported 30 new cases of COVID-19 in Wayne County yesterday. Edwards County had 18 new cases, per the state, Wabash County 25, and Hamilton County 15. Clay and Richland counties added 43 cases, White County 33, and Lawrence County 50. Marion County had its case number increase by 71, and Jefferson County jumped by 93. As a state, Illinois reported 8,665 new cases of COVID-19 and 123 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 2,929,636 cases and 31,036 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 17.8 percent on the 29th, down from18.2 percent on the 28th. River stages as of early this morning: the Little Wabash east of Fairfield stands at 6.63 feet, below the 17 ft. flood stage. Meanwhile, the Skillet Fork at Wayne City has a reading of 5.25 feet (flood stage is 15 ft.). The Little Wabash below Clay City is at 5.73 feet (flood stage is 18 ft.). Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 2.19 feet, and the Little Wabash at Main Street in Carmi reads 4.83 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel sits at 5.60 feet. Today's crude oil price is $81.25, unchanged from yesterday. The March crude oil price is $88.48, up $0.56 from yesterday morning.
