[gunfire. >> that's what life is like in liberal utopia. now even a former oregon gubernatorial candidate and a "new york times" columnist nic kristof sees the disaster that they have created. he wrote liberals like me do need to face the painful fact that something has gone badly wrong where we are in charge from san diego to seattle. west coast is infected with an ideological purity that's more focused on intentions than on oversight and outcomes. joining me now is victor davis hanson, senior fellow at the hoover institution. victor, that's kind of like the restatement of the obvious but, nevertheless, he is kind of a well-known liberal guy and my question to him is look, what is it going to take to change one party rule that's created this? victor, what do we do? >> well, worse yet. this is dlisht. it's the failure to enforce the rule of law and why? because under this woke orthodoxy, all of it -- the people who perpetrating these crimes are seen as victim or at least they are victims of social justice inequities and, therefore, they are exempted and the legislature won't even let a referendum on the ballot that would change the laws. and then it's not just criminal laws, laura, we have about a quarter of the people who are not paying their power bill and yet it's against the law to shut off your power bill if you don't pay for it. we have a huge black market economy where it's considered illiberal to impose sales or income tax on street vendors on swap meets. the whole state is in a doom loop. we lost 10 million people the last 25 years who were entrepreneurial tax paying class and they are gone. we have imported about 10 million peopled from the poorest parts of the world. many of them illegally. 27%, laura, the state was not born in the united states. and, yet, we did not attempt to assimilate or integrate them into the culture and traditions of the state and the nation. so, i'm not confident. >> laura: one thing that has to be done, clearly, is banning masks in public. none of these masks should be allowed, everyone gets caught on security footage if they are walking across the street or if they are doing something they are not suppose you had to be doing. but, the covid, you know, tradition of wearing the mask that's now been, of course, taken by the criminals, that has to end as well. these are just simple things that could be done. again, that's expression, i guess, masks. it is. we have a demographic problem. we have lost the middle class. we have a huge underclass, 20% of people under the poverty. plutocratic class. $9 trillion in silicon valley. so they draft this ideology and they are never subject to the bail consequences of what they impose on other people. but the middle class is dying. so we don't have a strong voice for law and order, practicality, energy, food, we're letting this bountiful year, laura, of all this water from the snow melt and mountains out to the ocean. it's sad. we need it for farming things like that are just irrational. >> laura: everyone seems to be on edge. check out this scene outside of this seattle bikini barista. >> a mix of shock and fury. emma's moves are swift. the customer's windshield shatters the aftermath of what emma says was 15-minute heated exchange with a regular customer over the price of coffee and water. >> very sim that they t
