return to, and there are other shocking fuse, so it's a mix between joy and sadness. >> very bittersweet. i have four relatives, my cousins, her husband and 3-year-old twins so we are anxiously awaiting. we have been through a nightmare, absolute nightmare of hell. l>> john: be getting an update from the idf at any moment now after israel and hamas have agreed to extend their temporary truce by another two days. while a fourth group of hostages is set to be freed in exchange for dozens of palestinian prisoners. hello, john roberts in washington. welcome back from thanksgiving, sandra. >> sandra: you as well, john. welcome back everybody. this is "america reports". we are kicking off a brand-new hour here, we expect the update from the idf shortly. israel's government says it has notified the families of the latest batch of hostages that could be released shortly, but remains unclear whether any of the americans presumed to still be held captive by those terrorists are on that list. >> john: we have complete coverage for you coming up. idf intelligence veteran standing by on whether this pause could lead to a more permanent ceasefire. >> sandra: first our team of reporters from across the globe. trey yingst live at the children's hospital outside of tel aviv, where some of the freed hostages are being treated. what are you hearing from your sources about this agreement? >> good afternoon. i just spoke with a qatari negotiator who indicated two additional days of ceasefire. and israeli media is reporting 11 hostages transferred from haas custody into the hands of the red cross and on the way to israel shortly. more good news for family here waiting more than 50 days for answers following the october 7th massacre. here at the snyder's children's hospital outside of tel aviv, 14 were released yesterday and nine came to this hospital last night, lifted here by helicopter and are receiving treatment at this hour. all of the patients here are said to be in good condition. they are being treated by a variety of doctors and psychologists to ensure they have everything they need. also been reunited with family members. we spoke with one grandmother who met three of her grandchildren after 50 days, they were held by hamas. she said they laughed, cried, so many different emotions when they were reunited and speaking with doctors how they are approaching treatment of the young israelis. >> it's not just physical but emotional, and so doctors, nurses, social workers, psycho therapists to escort them and bring them through the very important and very long i think way that they have to go through coming back to real life. >> there is a feeling of relief here, understanding families will be reunited once again across central israel when this new group of hostages makes their way out of gaza. but also quite a bit of tension across the region and understanding this is an incredibly delicate agreement. sandra. >> john: trey, thank you. learning more about some hostages released by hamas, including the 4-year-old girl who became the first american let go by the terrorist organization. alex hogan is on the ground in jerusalem and what more can you tell us about little abigail? >> hi, john. we are learning more about her, she is in good spirits and giving more hope to the other families of hostages. i've been talking to several families saying the ceasefire is giving them hope but it has been a state of prolonged anxiety and prolonged pain. but we have been seeing a lot of moments of relief, a lot of moments of celebration here over the weekend. hero's welcome home. sentiment all weekend in nationwide for moments like this. sharing, kissing her husband. ohad running into his father's arms. emily hugging her dad for the first time and laying with her sister and dogs. yoni holding his girls, all four reunited under one roof. the first three days of the ceasefire, 40 israelis, 14 thais and one filipino hostages. in exchange, israel released 117 palestinian prisoners in the west bank, in large crowds some people waved hamas flags as families celebrated emotional reunions as well. we had expected to see 11 israeli hostages released today and hamas just announced it has received a list of palestinian prisoners who will be freed. there are 33 names on the list, so we know israel is releasing three palestinians for every one hostage it gets back. so safe to say we expect to see those final 11 people today released which would bring it up to the official 50 as part of this first four-day deal. one thing we are learning, because the families have been notified of who is coming home and who can make their way to the hospitals, the family of that 10-month-old baby say that name is not on the list. john. >> john: all right, we'll keep watching and waiting to see how many more are released after this. alex, thank you. >> sandra: another alert now, houthi rebels firing upon the u.s.s. mason after the ship responded to a distress call from an israeli-linked ship following what the pentagon says was likely attack by somali pirates. that makes at least 73 attacks on u.s. forces since october 17th. former defense secretary mark esper will be joining us and whether the u.s. needs to take stronger action against the iranian proxies. but first, jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon. what do we know happened here? >> sandra, we broke the story last night, after rescuing the israeli tanker from five armed hijackers, u.s.s. mason tracked two missiles fired by houthi forces in yemen. both fell short into the gulf of aiden. significant escalation by houthi threats according to multiple navy sources. in 2016, the same navy warship, u.s.s. mason, found itself in a similar situation off the coast of yemen and took the unusual step of firing sm2 missile to defend itself and the u.s.s.ponce against the houthi cruise missiles. the first time it was used by a warship in combat. on sunday, navy personnel on board the u.s.s. mason responded to a distress call from an israeli tanker named central park. five armed gunmen seized the tanker by pulling up alongside the tanker had a low free board, gave the hijackers easy access. initial indication show the five individuals were somali pirates but it's not clear who sent them. the crew had locked themselves in the citadel safe room. the gunmen tried to beat down the door and exited the ship and making their way back to the shores of yemen when they were pursued and arrested them. warning shots were fired by the u.s. navy personnel and a u.s. helicopter gunship flew cover. they are now held on the mason questioned by counter piracy authorities. a japanese ship also helped with the intradiction. 59 distress calls from the central park. new questions are raised as to why the u.s. has not responded to the escalating threats from the iranian-backeded houthis in yemen. this is considered a serious escalation. >> john: bring in idf reserve lieutenant colonel, served 15 years in the idf, specializing in intelligence and now serves as the president of the alma research and education center. i want to get in to the increased beligerence, but talk about the hostages and the temporary ceasefire. president biden was asked how long he thinks it should continue. listen to what he said. >> how many days would you like to see the pause go on for? >> i would like to see us move to a point where we were able to -- let me put it this way. i would like to see the pause go on as long as prisoners kept coming out. >> john: isn't this exactly what hamas was planning when it took these hostages, so that when its back was against the wall it could use them as a bargaining chip to get israel to stop the attack? >> no doubt. i think at this saw the pictures you just broadcast about the joy and the welcoming of the israeli hostages back home but the joy is involved with a lot of dilemmas, anger and sadness, that for now our efforts to eliminate hamas and the threat that comes from hamas are freeze, and here in israel consensus that these pause should be temporary and we must eventually renew these efforts and go back to war and fight again because we must make sure that these people are not only coming back to israel, but they can also come back to their homes, which is not the situation now. they don't have, most of them don't have a home to go back to. the communities around gaza are evacuated, these people are living in hotels, and in order to rebuild these communities we must eliminate hamas. >> john: the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, indicated in a recent statement the military operations will resume at some point. he stated the end of the deal we are returning full power to carry out aims, destroy hamas, and ensure gaza does not return to what it was and to free our hostages. i'm sure we will succeed in this mission because we have no other choice. if 50 hostages are released in the temporary ceasefire, that will mean 170 remain in hamas captivity, a very strong bargaining chip on hamas's part to either increase international pressure for a ceasefire or to keep this one going. because hamas i can see would say to israel, look, we have more, do you want to get more back, keep the ceasefire going. >> we totally understand and i will even put moreover. additionally, details around the question here in israel is what preparation, the military preparation now being made as we speak inside gaza by hamas to be prepared for the new, renewal of the battles. the fact that we have seen gazaians trying to move from the south to the north and the videos i saw, mainly men. i didn't see women and children in the videos so who are these mens going back to the northern part. the fact the hostages were released from the northern part of gaza, i think from the southern part of gaza gives us a clue the campaign is still on and there is a lot of work to do to win against hamas. i agree there is kind of a contradiction between our efforts and goals and even values and principles over here as jews in israel to rescue all the hostages, including the soldiers, by the way, because this is a core value in our dna and what we believe in. at the same time, it is clear to all of us that this pause cannot last forever. i must also add one more thing about the humanitarian aid that is coming into gaza, tens of trucks are entering into gaza every day by this agreement while our hostages are not getting their medications and are not getting to meet with the red cross unless they are being released. so as you said, 178 hostages didn't meet the red cross until now, even though humanitarian aid is coming into gaza every day. >> john: concerns abound regarding that. let me ask you about the houthi rebels firing missiles in the gulf of aiden, it seems iran through proxies is bound and determined to either harass the united states or draw them into the overall conflict. >> again, i think this was the plan right from the beginning, and maybe i'm a lonely voice in this, but i think that iran cultivated in the past decade militias all over the middle east, the houthis are just one of them. each of these militias have some kind of level of in dependency with regard to where and when to operate, but the idea is clear, the idea is to create the campaign between iran and israel and united states, so i'm not surprised that this is what the houthis are doing, and i believe this is going hand-in-hand with the interest of the iranians themselves. i understand this is an escalation, but i don't think it's the end of the escalation. this is just the beginning. and we will probably see more since the houthis promise, they are going to block the traits from israeli passing, and even if they just suspect as you wrote, israeli leadership is trying to pass, you see there is attacks over there. >> john: i'm afraid you are probably correct in that. good to see you again. thanks for joining us, appreciate it. >> sandra: thank you, john. the broditch family was reunited after haggar and her three children were released by hamas after being held captive 51 days, coming together at the schneider medical center. we interviewed the husband and father in israel last month, here he described his family's ordeal to john. >> my home is right by the border. you know, we were never afraid of anything. people were coming in from gaza, so they were locked in the shelter inside the house, just took them from there. >> sandra: the three children are 10, 9, and 4 years old. john, remarkable moment, we all remember it very well, as we wait on any update on further hostages released. we have this idf update to begin. >> john: he was there at the defense ministry, he began the vigil/protests out in front of the defense ministry. he said that he was so distraught with the fact his entire family had been taken into gaza by hamas that he couldn't sleep, he was trying to take medication to help him sleep, and finally got up at 3:00 in the morning the saturday following october 7th and said i have to do something, and he walked down to the defense ministry and just sat out front and that attracted dozens of other people, inspired them to put up a wall of the missing in front there, and now some of the missing coming back. >> sandra: incredible story and we cannot imagine what we have gone through. hopefully we will get the update from the idf shortly. >> john: as we pointed out, 170 remain in captivity. millions under a winter weather alert as snow covers parts of the southern rockies and into the great lakes region. take a look at that. it comes on the heels of the thanksgiving holiday as millions of people are heading back home after going over the hill and through the woods to grandma's house. what you need to know before you head out. plus this. >> hey hey, ho ho, the occupation has got to go. >> sandra: pro palestinian protestors >> in my opinion, no. it's going to take a while, first of all. there is an opposition here, people will protest against this, and what's the end game? a year from now, file lawsuits against individuals using this phrase, i think, sandra, it's going to have an adverse effect and increase the usage to wipe israel off the map. i think it's a publicity stunt and does not serve the intended goal. >> sandra: many are speaking out, including where the president was in nantucket on a tree lighting ceremony. happened over the weekend. >> excuse me, this is a community free lighting, it's not a political event. we respect your right to free speech. hope everyone enjoys a merry christmas. >> sandra: even happening there, leo. >> i believe in the first amendment, freedom of speech. peaceful protesting. and that's going to take place. the question is, when you cross the line where it's vandalism, incite, intimidation, create arson, create damage and again, notice, very few arrests, very few prosecution, none of that whatsoever and this is again the conflict, the democratic party has with the rallies because they are well organized, well financed, and they support democratic politicians, sandra. >> sandra: very interesting stuff. we'll see where the lawyers get with the trademark, leo, as we continue to see the protests popping up all over the country, including one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. appreciate your time. thank you. >> john: now getting back home, sandra, millions of americans under a winter weather alert just in time for return trips from the thanksgiving holiday. mike tobin is live at chicago o'hare international airport, more than 100 delays yesterday. mike, you come back from a war in israel to this chaos. what's the scene like today? after 40 abductees have been returned what do we know about the degree of cruelty of hamas, and met them in the tunnels. can you add to that? >> we are collecting operational information and intelligence partly by degree we think the people who are returning abductees, that information provides us with information which may allow us for future operational matters which certainly not going to deal with this here and not all of it has been confirmed. but that is our goal, to bring them all back. >> and also i'm not going to address myself to a degree to the -- to what you have said. we will after we are only going to deal with what's going to help bring the abductees back. >> daily express, the british ones stated that idf knows where the abductees are and cannot get them out without injuring gazans. is that a factor in not doing so? our effort to return the abductees is a central one. in any case all along, now we are in -- within a framework whose purpose is bringing abductees back. i'm hoping in the coming days, assuming the intermediaries settle things, we are working around the clock gathering intelligence and preparing for the next stage of the war. they are clear targets and we have -- and they are dismantling hamas to bring back the abductees. therefore we strive and focus with bringing the abductees at all stages, i'm not going to address myself here and details about activities during intelligence, we only do what's right for the safety of the abductees and bringing them back home. thank you very much. have a good evening. >> sandra: a very firm message delivered by the idf there, john. it is our duty to bring back all hostages, not to sit around and wait for them to come home. saying we will rescue all hostages at all costs. this is why we fight. john, a strong message to the world. >> john: a very short briefing. i thought it would have gone on longer, dealing with the hostages, refused to entertain a question about reports that came from one of the hostages who were released, or one of the hostages released that sinwar, the head of gaza or the head of hamas in gaza met with the hostages at one point. he didn't even want to entertain that question, saying all he wants to do is focus on whatever is best to get the hostages released. it's really interesting that after prosecuting such a strong military campaign against hamas that the posture of the idf right now is we are in a temporary ceasefire, a temporary truce, let's not do anything to up end the apple cart. he would not say anything about that. >> sandra: and we are joined now by the president of the israel democracy institute, you listen. to john's point about the details we are learning about the hamas leader meeting with the hostages, we don't know much but that would be an interesting development. >> yes, but i think, you know, the most important element, israel has two war goals. bringing back the hostages and dismantling hamas. the two overarching goals of the campaign and now perhaps two additional days of a pause in order to bring back additional 20 hostages is good news, but it does not mean that it's going to be extended into a ceasefire. hamas needs to be dismantled in order to remove this threat from southern israel, this existential threat from israel and from the entire region. we are not doing it just for ourselves, we are doing it for the palestinian people themselves that need a better future. doing it for the region, egypt, saudi arabia, do not want the muslim brotherhood and iranian axis to strengthen in the region, so it's the cause of freedom to remove hamas. more than 90% of israelis support the twin, or duplicate war goals. both returning or bringing back the hostages and removing hamas. so let's not think if we are going to extend this temporary ceasefire by two days it means that now we are sort of rolling into ceasefire. >> sandra: john kirby live at the white house over concerns extending the truce and how it could benefit hamas. >> it's a real risk. you have to expect a group like hamas, a terrorist group, which clearly does not abide by the laws of war, would try to take advantage of a pause in the fighting for their own benefit, so watching that closely as well as our israeli counterparts. you can bet they are watching that closely. >> sandra: your thoughts on that. >> hamas obviously is being suffocated and that's the goal. hamas is a regime controlling a territory so it's a state-like regime with jihadist and isis-type goals and israel is putting a lot of pressure on them, conservatives and liberal, israelis from all walks of life understand that we need to remove hamas and it's difficult, and it's costly. because for 15 years, they have embedded all of their capabilities in residential homes, in mosques, in clinics, in hospitals, so it's costly and it's difficult and it's literally street by street and building by building and going to take weeks, perhaps months, and this is whenever we have a window of opportunity to release our hostages, elderly, kids, we still after today we are going to have about ten kids left in captivity. many women, and of course many of our youngsters, people who just went to a festival embracing the idea of peace, can you imagine that. >> sandra: we really appreciate you joining us today. hope to have you back soon. more updates to come on this ongoing hostage situation, john, hope to get more soon. >> john: looking forward to that. family ripped apart by hamas, both parents kidnapped and held hostage, now the
