at the u.s. military in the middle east. u.s.s. mason off the coast of yemen had two ballistic missiles launch evidence its way that notified. they responded to a distress call from a tanker nearby. we've seen more than 70 attacks on u.s. military forces since mid october. more shortly coming up here. first the emotions running high in israel. [chanting] >> bill: these are some of the scenes in israel and the west bank as they see newly freed prisoners. a four-day cease-fire about to run out and find out whether or not the cease-fire is extended. hope you had an awesome thanksgiving. i'm bill hemmer in new york. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." an emotional weekend. a 4-year-old israely american girl abigail edan is free but saw her parents murdered in front of her. hamas let go 58 people. israel released 39 palestinian prisoners in exchange. >> bill: the front page "new york post." safe at last. for some that is true. many more still are left behind. president biden saying he backs an extension of the four-day truce if more israeli hostages are allowed to go free. >> president biden: i would like to see us move to a point where we were able to -- let me put it this way. i would like to see the pause go on as long as prisoners keep coming out. >> bill: mike pompeo on the high stakes for the u.s. first alex hogan has the latest headlines from her post in israel. >> good morning. negotiators say they're working right now to extend the length of this pause after both sides say that is something they are eager to see continue. we'll continue to monitor that on the ground. it is day four of this cease-fire. we could see more hostages be released any minute. [cheers and applause] >> a hero's welcome home. the sentiment in nationwide celebrations for moments like this. sharon kissing her husband. a boy running into his father's arms. emily hugging her dad for the first time and laying with her sister and dogs. yoni holding all four girls reunited under one roof. in the first three days of the cease-fire hamas released prisoners. in exchange israel released 117 palestinian prisoners in the west bank in large crowds some people waved hamas flags as families celebrated emotional reunions as well. as we watch this unfold today we expect to see the release of the final 11 hostages, women and children in this agreed upon deal. the pause in fighting has held in gaza. despite the hopes the cease-fire would carry to northern israel and the conflict with hezbollah over the weekend the idf downed a surface to aramis ill launched from lebanon. 4-year-old abigaily dan, the 4-ye 4-year-old -- six other kids had at least one parent killed. >> bill: remarkable stuff, alex, thank you. secretary of state mike pompeo, the former with us now and sir good morning to you. mike pompeo joins us here. trey yengst brought us a report around 6:00 this morning saying that hamas doesn't have control of all these remaining hostages. let's say there are roughly 200 left over still in gaza. islamic jihad has maybe 40 or 50. so how are we going to find our way out of this? do you believe an extended truce is the right move now? >> good morning, bill, great to be with you. look, i have not tried to second guess the israeli decision making process. it has to be wrenching, the pure joy of seeing families reunited is something we can rejoice in. the pij, or just some rogue criminals continuing to hold israelis this challenge remains an operational and strategic one for the security of all israeli people not just those in harm's way today. the israeli leadership has to make a series of wrenching decisions how to do this. we shouldn't forget while we're focused on the crossings, the return of hostages, this is precisely what the ayatollah hoped for. our love of life, our decency and humanity would prevent us from keeping our eye on the ball, protecting the citizens we're responsible for. there are attacks on americans throughout the theater. you talked about a report of strikes from hezbollah. what is happening in gaza just one tactical region of a larger theater of scope of the ring of fire that has been built out over years by iran. >> dana: senator tom cotton was on the sunday show and he says there should be some massive retaliation. watch here. >> i would target iranians operating in iraq and in syria and send a clear message to iran if the attacks don't stop immediately we'll begin to threaten their assets. the way to stop these attacks is not to be fearful and hesitant and cautious in a response but massive retaliation to make it clear we won't tolerate these attacks on americans. >> dana: what do you think the conversations are like inside the administration on this? >> dana, i hope they're precisely what senator cotton prescribed. we've been working on this since 2015. and what you can say over this entire decade only one thing iran will respond to. if we'll protect american soldiers, and the american homeland from attacks by hezbollah cells in south america or inside the united states, you can't just go after their proxies. the fact that there are hamas fighters dying while the iranians are sitting in tehran laughing is exactly what the ayatollah had hoped for. senator cotton is right. cost imposing on the regime itself. the target list is long tool set we have isn't just operational and open and lots of ways to impose costs on them. as long as we talk about will we have a pause or not a pause i'm confident iran will continue to inflict its terror around the world. >> bill: you are right about that. that line you just gave there, the ring of fire really encompasses the entire region here. let's go back to january of 2020 when soleimani was taken out in baghdad. just play this out for us. if this administration had the guts to go ahead and go after some of this leadership, maybe these hamas leaders living in qatar, hundreds if not thousands of miles away from the conflict in gaza, what would happen throughout the region? what would be your best guess as to how that would unfold? >> bill, we don't have to guess, i will describe what happened that day when we took the strike on general soleimani. i remember it well. i was in the middle of it. the first thing that happened we took someone off the battlefield irk estateing attacks on americans and presenting risks to american lives. we took out a bad guy and saved american lives. but your point is a larger one. the whole world took note of this. friends in the region, iranians, qatar, saudis and took note. these americans will protect us. iranians they had took note. it stopped attacking our -- it happened in the middle east but around the world. they saw an administration that was prepared to deter adversaries and protect america. had a deterrent effect all over. i hope this administration has the same level of seriousness in protecting america. i haven't seen it to date. >> dana: we also haven't seen regional leaders condemning hamas's actions. >> no, i agree. that should happen not just regional leaders but leaders across the world including the united nations where they are abhorrent. we need the whole world to understand the barbarity. we need ever leader to do that. it will take america's leadership. when we're on the sidelines and wandering around talking i wish there would be a longer pause the whole world knows we're putting pressure on israel to stand down. when that happens those leaders begin to hedge. >> dana: story about dissent within the white house and quote from a senior official of the biden administration said we're taking on a lot of water on israel as behalf that signals they have other considerations in mind at the moment. maybe not at the top. >> you've seen it. you've seen this. you worked in the white house. that pressure from inside the white house will demand israel stand down. >> bill: mike pompeo beginning the day with us today. talk again very soon. back at home a suspect is under arrest in the shooting of three palestinian college students in the state of vermont said to be arraigned this hour. is a hate crime involved here? we'll let you know what we find out and this from saturday. >> mr. president, are you too old to be running for re-election? why is donald trump beating you in the latest poll? >> dana: president biden finding no escape from dismal polling during his nantucket getaway. now dean phillips calls his dreams of a second term nothing short of delusional. >> bill: we're saying goodbye to rosalynn carter today the former first lady to lie in repose in atlanta as the nation pays their final respects. hallenges. ♪ when better money habits® content first started coming out, it expanded what i could do for special olympics athletes with developmental needs. thousands of bank of america employees like scott spend countless hours volunteering to teach people how to reach their financial goals. it felt good. it felt like i could take on the whole world. okay everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. yay - woo hoo! ensure, with 27 vitamins and minerals, nutrients for immune health. and ensure complete with 30 grams of protein. good morning. >> good morning. the man in custody is jason eaton and 48 years old and lives close to the scene of the triple shooting as the nation's largest muslim civil rights organization is calling on state and federal law enforcement to look into a potential bias motive in the shooting. the three victims all 20-year-old college students of palestinianian descent with shot in the neighborhood and there to celebrate the thanksgiving holiday. two of them were wearing traditional palestinian scarves called keffiyehs when the suspect confronted them firing four shots from a pistol and fleeing. the white male did not speak and police report there is no additional information to suggest specifically that suspect's motive. all three victims were struck. two in torso, one lower extremities. two in serious condition, a third is critical. the chief of police said no one can look at this incident and not suspect it may have been a hate-motivated crime. i have already been in touch with federal investigators to prepare for that if it's proven. the f.b.i. is on this case but it was the a.t.f. agents con vasting the area that first captured eaton sunday afternoon. the search warrant of his residence right in front of the shooting scene uncovered evidence and gave prosecutors what they needed to believe he was the shooters. republican governor of vermont called the shooting a tragedy urging vermonters to unite and let the community heal and not incite more hate. eaton is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and slated to be in court next hour. >> bill: we'll be watching for more information in boston, massachusetts. >> dana: president biden's long shot primary challenger dean phillips doubles down on his push to win the 2024 nomination. the polls are spelling doom and gloom for biden. as a member of house democratic leadership i supported the biden agenda and voted for him and respect him. how can anyone read this and conclude he is positioned to defeat donald trump? it's delusional. his words, not mine. fox news contributor and co-founder of third way, matt bennett former clinton white house specialist. want to read the quote from "politico" that was the big political story of the weekend, i think, it's fair to say. biden's recent slide is a confluence of slippage with democrat constituents like young voters. the rise of the war in middle east and the rise of third party candidates could siphon votes. the most recent poll showing biden's approval at 40%. it is pretty low, matt. what i would love to know is if -- are we looking at this and saying biden has a lot of trouble but the campaign says it's fine. this time next year everything will be okay. >> look, i think they are concerned and should be and should always run as if you are behind. i think it is important to point out a few things. first of all if somebody is delusional here it is dean phillips talking about polling for an election a year away and that's very close. and his own election is 2 1/2 months away and he is losing by 60 points to someone who is not on the new hampshire ballot. joe biden won't appear on that ballot. a write-in candidate will alie nate him in new hampshire. i'm not taking his advice thinking about polling. what is important to point out. the polling now reflects how people are feeling about the president right now. it is a referendum on joe biden. the difference next year is it will be a choice between joe biden and donald trump. and after the biden team and all democrats remind america about trump's 91 felony crime that he was a chaotic and horrible president i think it will be clear to americans they have to stick with biden and i think they will. >> dana: in the "wall street journal" yesterday there was a long piece about donald trump if he were the nominee. any republican would have an electoral college advantage over joe biden. that isn't going to change between now and then while the polling might or people's feelings about the economy might that won't change. so can republicans figure out a way to make this a one-term president? >> yeah, i think they may not have to do the job. i know dean phillips is a long shot. he has two months to make his case to the people of new hampshire. joe biden won't be on the ballot and rely on write-in votes because he wanted to muscle south carolina in the first slot on the primary calendar. it leaves an opening for dean phillips. you have a lot of democratic voters who want to go in a different direction. prefer someone in their 50s versus eight 0s. they'll find in him while not as well-known as governor and senators, a formidable person to make the case they want made. >> dana: the second topic. i mentioned in a block a story over the weekend division within the biden administration and within the white house about the president's strong stand for israel. the "washington post." israel/gaza war has roiled the administration more than any other issue than biden's first three years in office as staffers agonize over their positions on highly emotional issues. that's not going to go away for a while. if i could get 30 seconds from you both starting with you, matt, what does it look like a week or two from now? >> i think it depends on what happens in the course of the war. we're in the midst of a cease-fire the president helped negotiate. that could be expended according to the prime minister of israel and hamas and if that happens, and if we see some progress in release of hostages i think you will see a fundamentally different political position soon. moreover, election is very far from now. americans are going to be focused on other things by next november. >> as israel acts to destroy hamas there are civilian casualties. it is natural that people would be concerned about those. i think you also have here the white house and biden's decision to alie with the progressive left. very anti-israel. doesn't like american tradition that much either. this is the price you pay for building that political coalition that includes the extreme left. >> dana: so much to talk about as we get 49 or 50 days from the first voting in iowa in the gop primary. have a great day. >> bill: thank you, fellows. 25 past the hour. a terrifying scene unfolding at a high school outside of new york city. this is in queens, new york, a teenage mob ram paged through the halls looking for a jewish teacher who attended a pro-israel rally. how did they know?
