right now. and secretary of state anthony blinken is about to leave that country after meeting with officials from the country to discuss the escalating tensions in the middle east. he may speak to reporters in the next 10 or so minutes. if so, out at the airport, you will see it live here. bribe? >> all right. his visit to the middle east comes as israeli force force continue forward in every way possibly. entering gaza city as soon as today. while the idf claims to have taken control of a hamas outpost within the strip. >> meanwhile, across the globe, pro-palestinian protesters hitting the streets in major cities this weekend. >> we're in enter gun county. we will talk to folks how it is affecting them in local levels and jewish communities all across the country. ferris check in with trey yingst in southern israel with the latest. hey, trey. >> trey: hey, giles, good morning. right now we know the israelis are pushing deeper in the gaza strip, they have gaza city surrounded. i want to he show you the level of destruction behind me around the border. israelis say they have hit 450 different targets over the past 24 hours, destroys hamas command centers and different posts. we do know that they're being ambushed and the air support and artillery along the border are trying to destroy any of the buildings where heams fightsers are hiding in. that's part of the reasonable you see so much destruction here. take a look at video our cameraman filmed last night. along the border we can see these massive explosions as the israelis used bunker buster bombs to try to destroy the tunnel network beneath gaza. this comes as fox news was granted access into the gaza strip this weekend. we were with the israeli military as they pushed deeper into the strip and got a first-hand look at the battles between israel and hamas. take a look. [gunfire] >> trey: can you hear that gunfire in the distance. the israelis are trying to engage anyone who tries to ambush their forces and the battle is street-by-street it is urban guerrilla warfare as hamas is popping out of tunnels and ambushing israeli troops: right now we are embedded with the israeli military inside the gaza strip. these forces have been ambushed, shot at, and lost more than two dozen of their own soldiers. still, they fight block-by-block in bloody urban battle. enemy hamas. who are trying to kill as many israelis as they can. you see the level of destruction there, there are more than a million civilians inside gaza. many homes destroyed. they have nowhere to return. to say this does come as the americans see what is happening on the ground here and are trying to send a message to hamas' regional allies including iran not to get involved in this fight. weave do know in the red sea today there is the uss florida. a submarine that has 154 tomahawk missiles on board. again, the americans trying to signal to israel's enemies across the region not to get involved. guys, back to you. >> steve: trey, it was amazing video watching you actually in gaza with the idf. you know, since they're from and they are not necessarily coming out. they are staying they have gaza city surrounded at this point, as you just pointed out, how are they resupplies the people on the front lines, essentially with water and ammo and food and medicine and any equipment they might need? >> it's great question. and they are taking convoys in and out of gaza. but that journey is the most dangerous part. we were in an apc with the israeli military for 15 to 20 minutes just to get into gaza. more than a mile into the strip. when we got there, it was far lets tense, actually, inside until the gun battle started just because there were so many soldiers. they have such presence in these different areas. but the soldiers are living on cans of tuna and canned corn. it's a very simple life inside gaza. they understand that they're not going to stay in these positions for a long time. so they have really what they can carry with them as they move from house to house and deeper into gaza. are. >> carley: this is interesting just position today you have secretary of state anthony blinken about to leave turkey over the weekend his whole message he is pushing, the biden administration is pushing for this humanitarian pause and the thinking there is that it would be easier to negotiate for hostage releases if there is a brief pause in fighting. but that is happening as fighting around gaza city is ramping up. so it does not seem like israel and the united states is on the same page on this one. how are israeli officials handling the push from the united states, calling for these pauses? >> yeah, the israelis and the americans do not see eye-to-eye on this issue. the americans say there needs to be a pause in the fighting in order to increase the amount of humanitarian aid. while the israelis say they need a maximum pressure campaign against hamas in order to get the hostages released. i think we do have some of the video here of the jordanian air drop that took place overnight. jordan actually took one of their transport planes over the gaza strip and dropped aid into gaza for palestinian civilians. now, it wasn't announced, but this is something that certainly was coordinated with the israelis. israel understands the amount of pressure they are facing from the united states and others to get aid into gaza. so quietly behind the scenes, they are allowing things like this to make sure that the palestinian civilians in the strip have a small amount of aid to get by. the world food program says the amount of aid getting into gaza is simply not enough and the humanitarian crisis there will continue to deteriorate. >> brian: so, trey, i understand to have any rescues, you need to get into gaza city. so, is there a sense that the hostages become a priority as reports are that the idf is in gaza city? >> absolutely. it's a priority for the israelis. as we were standing on that roof top inside the gaza strip. i spoke with lt. colonel guy lob pastor neck. he gave me new information that information the israelis believe majority of the hostages are being held gaza city beneath the city, in the tunnel network beneath gaza city. this is different than what we originally thought there was an understanding maybe they were spread out throughout the strip and other population centers like rafah. the israeli military says they think they are underneath gaza city. part of the reason they have the city surrounded. cut the city in half and appear to be pushing in. >> steve: lawrence? >> lawrence: you know, trey, i have been reading some reports of the mood on the ground from gazans. i just wonder, you have been covering this conflict for years before we got to this war. have you noticed a tone change in the moderates in the gaza strip? >> huge frustration among palestinian civilians in gaza that i have been talking to about what happened. some of them were horrified by the massacre that took place in southern israel on october 7th. and they understand that what hamas did set the palestinian cause back decades. now, oftentimes people look at the situation on the ground and they are not able to make the important distinction between the palestinian people and the terror organization hamas. and so, there is a frustration among moderate palestinians about what took place. and there is an understanding that as this unravels, there are people in the united states, for example that, are taking to the streets and protesting against israel, without having a firm understanding about hamas. and what the organization stands for. >> brian: yeah, they also have the hamas flags up there, too. which is absolutely insane. trey, thanks so much. we will check out with you in about 20 minutes. appreciate it. why the way they had a palestinian spokesperson in on face the nation. and he was asked four or five times, will you condemn the october 7th attacks? wouldn't do it. absolutely not going to do it. so, also, there is video of fat that, which is palestinian authority, actually taking part in the 10/7 a. tacks. so you can't say that was hamas, that's not us. no, you were involved in. this you posted on the video you put music underneath and it say we are part of that great attack that killed 1400 people in the most brutal way imaginable. so, i know, understand anthony blinken is trying to get a partner with peace. i just don't know if it's in the west bank. i don't know if it's on this planet let alone in the west bank right now. >> steve: listen, all you got to do is walk out into a lot of american big cities and you will see that there is a lot of support for palestine in the cities. there is a demonstration in washington, d.c. with over 100,000 people they are estimating. eventually marched on the white house, they were chanting allahu akbar and f joe biden. and they also, and there you can see some of the activities outside. they did at one point -- it was mostly peaceful. but outside they did deface one of the gates. i think the northwest gate with red paint. >> brian: how is that allowed? >> steve: it's not. >> carley: only one person. biden, biden, you can't hide, we charge with you genocide that really have a direct threat against the president of the united states. no matter how you feel about the president politically, whether you support him or not, imagine thousands of people chanting you can't hide to the president of the united states? some protesters were openly supporting hamas, too, when asked by griff jenkins and other people how do you feel about the october 7 a tack? do you condemn hamas? they said no. >> steve: joe biden does hide. he hides every weekend in rehoboth delaware. this particular chant was heard on the streets of washington and new york and from a member of congress. the chant is from the river to the sea, palestine will be free. and it's anti-semitic because it implies from the river onto the sea from the jordan river to the mediterranean sea they would wipe israel off the face of the earth. and here's the thing. congresswoman tlaib from the great state of michigan, used that and got some blow back and watch this. >> mr. president, the american people are not with you on this one. [chanting] from the river to the sea. from the river to the sea. >> we will remember in 2024. ♪ >> brian: well-produced, well-financed good job. you are watching a civil war on the left. because, lawrence, bernie sanders was asked to condemn these remarks. he didn't. we have tlaib saying what she is saying and omar did not condemn. this and jayapal did not condemn these remarks against their own president. that's what happens when you weaponize this woke victim ideology it. blows up in your face, doesn't it? >> lawrence: yeah. the problem is, brian, it's just not wokeism now. i mean, they are advocating for the annihilation of jews. these are hate crimes. the rhetoric are directly from radical islam. and pretty soon, we're going to understand exactly what they mean. one of our producers here was telling me a story. he lives about 10 minutes away from the local synagogue. it was surrounded by pro-palestinian protesters, pro-hamas supporters that were there. if it's not about jews, if it's not about the people, then why are you surrounding a synagogue. please explain to me how that's okay? what would happen if you surrounded a mosque? what would be the reaction toward that? pretty soon we have to take all of these folks that are having the hamas flag, saying to the river -- from the river to the sea at their words. they want to annihilate jews. >> steve: absolutely. >> lawrence: it's plain and simple. >> brian: also in that spot the spot of a hospital which islamic jihad blew up. debunksd it was the idf. she put it in 30 second spot condemning her democratic president. >> lawrence: yeah, because we know where thee stands. she is not coy of where she stands. i don't think we should be coy as well. another person who wasn't coy was senator bernie sanders. he refused to condemn her. watch. >> there are credible reports from agencies across the world and, you know, the united nations have said we are hurdling twarltd genocide of palestinians. that ♪ an isolated view. >> what's going on right now is a horror show. we don't have to quibble about words. thousands of men, women, and children are being killed. it has got to end right now. >> steve: somebody on the left did chastise her. and that would be representative elissa slotkin. she is the only jewish member of the delegation from the great state of michigan. she said regarding the -- from the river to the sea, she said if i knew that a phrase i had used had hurt any of my constituents, i would apologize and retract it, no matter its origin. i ask the same of you. >> carley: very notable position from senator bernie sanders who is, of course, a jewish american himself. and at the last little bit of criminal jayapal said is that she says we are hurdling towards the genocide of palestinians. i think a good follow-up question for her there well then how do you explain the fact that israel has dropped hundreds of thousands of fliers, sent 6 million text messages to palestinians telling them to leave and if you don't you are taking your own life into your hands. >> brian: set up a corridor to get out. it's up to egypt to open up the rafah pass in order to get them through the gate. we have gotten 300 americans in gaza out. there is more. i think at least 100, right? >> steve: one of the problems with the situation in gaza city though is we have heard from the idf that people who got the leaflets, got the text message, got the phone call, they tried to leave and then the hamas people are shooting at them so they have got to stay in their house. >> brian: there is some great video out there that shows exactly them popping up from the tunnels right inside the hospital you see where they have been targeted right into the tunnel. so there is a 2,000 bomb that was dropped. i get it. it was a bunker buster because there is a subterranean subway down beneath hamas killers. for the most part they have been extremely disciplined in their targeting. >> steve: indeed. >> lawrence: also, brian, it's important to know that some of the people who are there still stand are hamas as well. so, i mean, we have had reporters on the ground to get these people and talk to them and they -- they are supposed to be moderates, but their rhetoric is not moderate at all. important to know when we are talking about. >> brian: yeah, they don't wear jerseys. they dress like civilians, but they are really killers. >> steve: more on this throughout the morning. and the secretary of state may make some comments before he hops into his state department plane. if he does, we'll take you there live. >> brian: leaving turkey, right? >> steve: indeed. tomorrow talk about election day in a number of states, including virginia. we will be down there tomorrow, talk to glenn youngkin. later today, iowa governor kim reynolds is expected to -- and this is a big win for ron desantis is going to endorse ron desantis. his camp uses as an enormous win and they hope her star power helps jump start his campaign as he tries to establish himself as a clear alternative to the frontrunner. >> carley: as that is happening really good news for the former president as well. new poll shows trump beating biden in five out of six battleground states. these, one of them by 10 points. big margins. arizona, trump has beaten biden, georgia as well, michigan, nevada, pennsylvania. the only one where biden is beating the former president is wisconsin, and that's by two points. >> brian: right. this is amazing. i don't think trump had these type of polls in 2015 leading up to his victory in 2016. it shows. this it's not that the president has got great ads or that the current president has bad ads. it is pure performance. people just saying what were we doing in 2017? what were we doing in 2018? on the same issues. how dehandle it and could it have been any different? >> brian: meanwhile the secretary of state tony blinken meeting with the press after meeting with the turkish president. >> united states working on together. including the efforts to grow and expand nato very pleased the protocols were signed by erdogan and now before the turkish parliament. we talked about the important work we are doing in support of ukraine. turkey has played a critical role in the last couple of years, including with the grain initiative and trying to get food out of ukraine as well as supporting its electricity grid. we discussed our work to strengthen our counter-terrorism partnership to growing our economic relationship through trade and investment and, of course, we discussed the crisis in gaza, including the efforts to significantly expand humanitarian assistance to people in need. keep the conflict from spreading to other parts of the region. and what we we can do to set te conditions for a durable, sustainable, lasting peace for israelis and palestinians. on the humanitarian piece, i think we have made good progress in recent day in working to expand that ambassador satterfield remains in the region working that every single day. we have also had very important conversations throughout this trip with countries in the region the role that everyone can play in making sure that the conflict doesn't expand, doesn't spread to other countries, and, of course, we remain very focused on the hostages held by hamas, including americans in making sure we're doing everything possible to bring them home. one of the common key nominators i have heard throughout this trip is the imperative of american engagement, american leadership. every country i talk to is looking for us to play a leading role with our diplomacy to try to make progress on all of these different aspects of the crisis. from here we are heading to japan for a meeting with the g 7. i will have an opportunity to debrief my colleagues on what we have learned and con during this trip and to continue that work and carry forward. of course, i will be consulting and debriefing president biden and discussing with him the way forward in the days ahead. at the same time, we'll be not only in japan but also in korea and then on to india. i think that's evidence of the fact that even as we are intensely focused on the crisis in gaza, we're also very much engaged and focused on the important work that we're doing in the indo-pacific and in other parts of the world advance american interest. with that, i'm happy to take a couple of questions. >> hi, thank you, mr. secretary. you mentioned people are looking to the united states to make progress on all of these points. thus far we have seen very little apparent progress on israel continues to reject the humanitarian pauses. we continue to see these images coming out of gaza of the civilian toll here. given all of this, do you feel that you accomplished the mission you set out on this trip? >> all of this is a work in progress. look, we know the deep concern here for the terrible toll that gaza is taking on palestinians men, women, and children in gaza, innocent civilians a concern that we share and we are working on every single day. we have engaged the israelis on steps that they can take to minimize civilian casualties. we are working as i said very aggressively on getting more humanitarian assistance into gaza. and we have very concrete ways of doing that i think you will see in the days ahead that that assistance can expand in significant ways of the so that more gets into people who needs it and gets to the people who need it as well as making sure that people can continue to come out of gaza. i think we have had important conversations and more than conversations, we're making sure that the different influence relationships, that countries in the region have. including the countries that i visited or spoke to that they're using that to make sure that this conflicting crisis doesn't spread. and that's critical. i think countries are very much engaged in trying to make sure that that doesn't happen. that's important. sometimes the absence of something bad happening may not be the most obvious evidence of progress. but it is. and also, tremendously important, are the conversations we're having about how we can set the conditions, as i said, for a just and durable and sustainable peace. i think we had very important engagement with many of the countries in the region that so that we're doing that work. even as we are focused on the day of and getting through this crisis, we're also focused on the day after. and making sure that there's a better path forward coming out of it. so, i think in each of these areas, we have made progress. and i come back to the proposition that what i heard in every single place, in a variety of ways, on all that's different issues, is the indispense sibility of american leadership, of american diplomacy, of american engagement. countries are looking for us to do things. we don't obviously agree on everything. but there are common views on some of the imperatives of the moment that we're working on together. and in other areas we are making sure that we're communicating clearly and understanding where each other is coming from. >> mr. secretary, have you seen the israelis actually taking any of these steps that you discussed with them on friday? and how long can this call for a pause vs. a cease-fire be tenable given the opposition you are seeing in the region. >> as i said we are working on almost every single minute. we have ambassador satterfield who remains parked in the region, working on the details every day particularly with regard to humanitarian access and significantly increasing what is getting in. as i have discussed the other day when it comes to humanitarian pauses, we are engaged with the israelis on the particular practicalities of that one critical aspect though is seeing progress on hostages. that is something we're intensely focused on. but we also believe that a pause could help advance that proposition as well. and we're also very focused not only on gaza, but what is happening in the west bank. we have made very clear our concerns about extremist violence in the west bank. we have heard the israeli government make commitments on dealing more effectively with that. and we are watching very closely to make sure that that happens. >> mr. secretary, thank you. you just touched on actually what i wanted to ask you about regarding the hostages. you just came out of meetings with turkey do you believe that turkey, egypt, qatar, the countries you are working ton release the hostages still have enough leverage to be able to work with hamas to get some of those hostages out or is that completely out of the question at this point unless israel stops its bombing campaign and, if i may, just a really quick one unrelated, with regard to turkey, have they given you any assurances that they are prepared to support sweden's ascension into nato? >> on the hostages you understand i can't get into the details of that i can say that intense focus for us. we believe and we are seeing that other countries can play an important role in getting hostages back. i'm very much convinced that that remains the case not only is there still opportunity there is a necessity to see that happen it's important other partners to the extent they have relationships use those relationships to help. i still believe that's possible. with regard to sweden, we are very encouraged by the fact that president erdogan signed the irratification protocols sent them to parliament. i think there is a shared commitment to make sure we complete the process. that sweden joins the alliance. that's a commitment that trakeia and i have and i would expect we will see that come to fruition. thanks, everyone. >> steve: okay. there you have got the secretary of state. you know, he was talking a little bit about the pause, the united states would like one. israel would not. he kept talking about progress. but i listened to him no real breakthroughs. to make that point is he not going back into the region. is he going into japan to talk to the g 7. >> before -- while we went to turkey, to see what secretary of state antoni blink hadn't to say during his negotiations and very critical negotiations that to try and get the hostages released and make sure this war doesn't expand into a further global conflict. we were talking about this polling that shows former president trump up in a majority of the swing states. five out of the six. and one of the notable people that spoke out on the art formerly known as twitter now x. david axelrod of the obama administration. he post this message and i think it's one if he is saying it, other democrats must feel this way as well. only joe biden can make this decision. if he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the democratic party. what he needs to decide is whether that is wise. whether it's in his best interest or the country's best interest. the message there he is questioning if the president right now should run again in 2024. the clock is ticking. >> steve: i think that's a no from him. >> brian: lawrence, what do you think? >> lawrence: it's happening. it's finally happening. they are realizing the polling nationally is coming out not enough to say the former president has a terrible temperament or he tweets bad. it's not going to fly american border is overrun and crime suspect. they don't feel like joe biden has been strong on the national stage. there was another poll that came out over the weekend. even in the "new york times" that said americans felt safer under trump, right? and they felt they were better on the national stage under his leadership you can disagree or agree with it. the american people felt things were better not just from an economic standpoint but they felt like we were safer. again, on every single level, joe biden is struggling right now. i think this is the opening. remember, axelrod didn't want joe biden to run to begin with. >> steve: exactly. >> lawrence: he was trying to find someone else. one of the people encourage him not to do it. now i think the writing is on the wall. a lot of the democratic leadership, the people behind the scenes, the chicago four that helped obama are going to start trying to get newsom in this race. >> brian: his main liability is his age. not going to get any younger. can't do anything about that. it's really interesting to see the attack already coming on trump. their best hope is to make trump unelectable. last night "60 minutes" the lead story january 6th. john eastman's tremendous vales and now came up with crazy scheme on january 6th. and then we also see "the washington post" write a story trump will get back in and there all he will do is look for revenge. you all have to do joe biden's campaign all of you?
