his experience in gaza. steve has more on the escalating tension with hezbollah. we begin with alex hogan live in tel aviv with more on the new phase on the ground war of hamas. >> good evening, trace, we see again repeated strikes on the gaza strip over night. for hours we saw the skyline light up with artillery. you can see the footage continuing for hovers u. hours. the idf is stepping up ground operations and playing out with tanks and by sea the last 24 hours with the idf saying they're focus on hamas infrastructure and tunnels. as the strikes continue tonight the international community is weighing in with an overwhelming majority. the united nations called for mediate humanitarian truth. it doesn't hold legality but it holds weight. here in tel aviv a strike from gaza made a direct hit on an apartment building wounding three people. yesterday we visited victims in a mobile morgue. >> the bods he's are kept in refrigerated trailers. they're working around the clock for the last 20 days. so many victims in the trailers are tortured there. is little dna evidence to go off of. so many of the bodies arriving here, we were not able to physically even try to pry them open. >> why is that. >> many were burnt, severely burnt. if we try to move them they will just crumble. >> it's still early morning here. quiet on the streets of tel aviv. we're hearing a lot of jets over head throughout the night. as the strikes continue in the gaza strip we are now hearing a response from hamas hill stands saying they're ready to fire back at israelis with full force. trace. >> we expect to hear more of that propaganda. thank you, alex. now to steve live from northern israel with hezbollah's reaction to israel's expanding ground operations in gaza. steve. >> trace, throughout the afternoon hours here we heard a number of explosions behind me. two miles back where hreb a noo. -- lobbing antitank missiles into northern israel. basically contained micro war between the two sides here. iran's foreign minister said hezbollah has their finger on the trigger there. are protests as well in lebanon on a daily basis. many calling on hezbollah to take a more active roll in the fight against israel. >> there is no doubt that we are in the battle. we're in this war in gaza. the tactics how we go to the confrontation is hezbollah leadership and the leadership of the battle. >> what hezbollah decides to do next could decide on the ground operation of israel. if from is a high civilian body count in gaza there could be a call on hezbollah to be more active despite warnings from israel and the united states. many have left homes. when you drive up here you have to bring your own food. many businesses, restaurants, homes shut down for fear of what could be ahead. trace, back to you. >> steve, we will get back to you as the news warrants. we talk a lot about urban warfare and how difficult the battle in gaza would be. it's not just the fact that gaza is among the most densely popupopulated places on the pla. there are thousands of miles of underground tunnels. this will be a very difficult battle for the israelis. >> it's a horrific battle for israeli, trace. the defense minister said again today it will be a long battle. anyone spending time in tkwaz a will know that. leave ago side the network of tunnels beneath tkwaz a city. the main city in gaza. and the south where there is a network of tunnels underneath. leaving that aside just cities themselves are so densely packed. densely built. that kind of urban warfare is every solders nightmare. the israeli soldiers are better trained than anyone dealing with that kind of thing. they're prepared for anything. they have the kind of weapons that other military forces would love to have. a lot of technology. i think we will see, that hasn't been used before. that will play out now. this is going to be horrific. hamas, nobody should think hamas is just planning for this since october 7th. they planned for the aftermath as they planned for the terrorist attacks themselves. they have had plenty of time to prepare. they know what they're doing. they said again today, we are ready. >> specific, jonathan, i'm curious about the tunnels themselves. you have been in there. what do they look like? how for formidable are they for israeli soldiers? >> they have built them up for over a decade. hamas took over gaza in 200. air long-term plan. they rudimentary to begin with. they have built them with concrete. concrete reinforce. they have various rooms to get together to plan things. they have all of the facilities they need. we heard one hostage coming out last week. the grandmother that talked she talked about the medical supplies they have there. all of the supplies going in before october 7th, a lot that had hasn't gone near the palestinian people. it's going straight into the tunnels and stock piled. they're well prepared. >> it's a indication they have prepared for quite some time. jonathan, thank you. jennifer griffin pwroebgt the story last night about the u.s. striking iran proxies in seer ya. she is back n. at the pentagon with more if the warning shot had the i object tended affect it doesn't sound like it was an effective determ. deterrent.>> trace, we saw there drone strikes. that failed shot down by u.s. troops. we're not sure whether iran got the message or not. we learned president biden has sent a war powers notification to congress explaining why he ordered war strikes last night in syria. he referenced article 51 of the u.n. charter that allows the right to self defense under international law. he called the action necessary and proportionate. he vowed more if there were more attacks on u.s. troops. we have learned that defense secretary austin spoke with his counterpart in israel. a underscore of the importance of protecting civil civilians a and the humanitarian aid. his focus is getting hamas to release the hostages. meantime as the middle east is standing on a massive ground invasion by the israeli army into gaza could last months and trigger hezbollah in the north and other iranian proxies testing the military tying the u.s. back down in the middle east. it's important to look at what benefits from the actions of iran and hamas. it's not israeli or tehran. it's no coincidence that top hamas leaders and the founder made their way to meetings in pute an yesterday. pute an's forces in aou rain are experiencing heavy losses. they have had to rely on a rainian drones for success on the battlefield. we were the first to report. we know it was an f16 and an f15 that took part in delivering the response to ten days ah tacks on u.s. ba bases iraq and syria. bombing two areas of southeastern syria near iraq. one was a wea weapons depot. no casualties at either site. -- forces were not at the facilities they targeted this. target was about -- u.s. resolve by expanding the clarity. iranian proxies. since october 17th. the first since the u.s. carried out the pair of air strikes last night. it's important to remember, trace, there are 900u.s. troops in syria tonight at small bases. part of the anti- anti-isis mis. a anybody currently being guarded at the refugee camp from being released. that could give isis a fresh start if released. >> jen, i wants to go back to the strikes. how were they different from the past. >> they were quite similar to the past. march 23rd. there were strikes in the same area. it was again to stop, that was after u.s. troops had been targeted and repeatedly by the ryanian proxy forces. periodically they have had to do this. iran seemed to get the message back then. the question is now what is iran's long term goal. is the ayatollah going to order the northern front opened with hezbollah. they have a hundred thousand missiles medium and long term missiles that could target israeli cities. >> that changes everything. thank you, jen. let's bring in our next guest -- gentlemen thank you both. garrett, it looks like israel. it appears in the early going is taking proper steps. prepping the battlefield. laying a path for more troops to go in. is that a farah assessment? >> it is. it looks like israel is doing eveneverything a modern military would do. they're preparing battlefield for their operational design. they have a success story planned out. they probably prepped for this for years, that they would eventually have to do it. they want to move hamas into an area that's not advantageous for them but is for the israelis. it looks like they're doing that in a deliberate way. >> nathan, there are reports of clashes between hamas and israeli soldiers. does that surprise you in the early going of these types of ground wars? >> no, trace, think that's all to be expected. israel is being strategic and patient. they're not rushing into a ground war in an emotional way they have clear strategic objectives. they're ambitious. they want to degrade hamas so they're not capable of governoring the gaza strip. they want to destroy their capability. i think we have to expect what we see now. the border squirm ish it's andiw grade. we will see this wrap up maybe not tonight or tomorrow but clearly this is where it's headed. >> let's play this sound bite. we will get your take, garrett. >> you want to stop the proxies from attacking u.s. troops? then go out and kill them. go conduct multiple strikes against the control, their leaders. take down the offensive systems. rockets, missiles, and drones. take out the entire infrastructure that. should of been done last night. extensive strikes, that's phase one. >> garrett, he's saying the united states response to syria were weak and should have been robust. what do you think. >> think he's exactly right. we have had 90 strikes. 90 plus strikes or attacks on u.s. service members since president biden took office. we have responded five times. each time it's a building in the middle of the dessert. almost no casualties. if you contrast that with the last administration. strategic powerful strikes going after the head of the snake it deters iran. >> it does, mike pompeo says to go after the leadership inside iran itself. i have 30 seconds for you. >> clearly blowing up a couple of warehouses in the dessert ends a message. not the mezzage the administration wants to send. the message they send and iran sees is weakness. they see the united states is prepared to talk a big game but not act to protect the lives of our soldiers. we hit triple digits today. a hundred strikes on american soldiers in syria and iraq since president biden took office. you want to stop it. you have to go after command and control. impose real costs. >> go after command and control. thank you, gentlemen. breaking news on the massive man hunt in maine. robert card has been found dead. police say robert card killed 18 people on a rampage want people to hear it according to the reporting the body was found a mile from the abandoned car. recordedly it was found next to the dumpster, next to the place maine recycling that fired him two weeks ago. to me that is a pretty clear statement. the place fired him. his sister-in-law said that was one of the things leading to some of the mental troubles he was more recently having. feeding into his paranoia. think if that reporting is accurate he was found near the dumpster, i think that's a message as well he felt, he was trying to communicate he was thrown out by the folks. so i'm just glad frankly he's no longer a threat. in light of his gripe against that location it could of gone another way. >> i have about 40 seconds for you, paul. i was surprised he was so close to the his experience in gaza. steve has more on the escalating tension with hezbollah. we begin with alex hogan live in tel aviv with more on the new phase on the ground war of hamas. >> good evening, trace, we see again repeated strikes on the gaza strip over night. for hours we saw the skyline light up with artillery. you can see the footage continuing for hovers u. hours. the idf is stepping up ground operations and playing out with tanks and by sea the last 24 hours with the idf saying they're focus on hamas infrastructure and tunnels. as the strikes continue tonight the international community is weighing in with an overwhelming majority. the united nations called for mediate humanitarian truth. it doesn't hold legality but it holds weight. here in tel aviv a strike from gaza made a direct hit on an apartment building wounding three people. yesterday we visited victims in a mobile morgue. >> the bods he's are kept in refrigerated trailers. they're working around the clock for the last 20 days. so many victims in the trailers are tortured there. is little dna evidence to go off of. so many of the bodies arriving here, we were not able to physically even try to pry them open. >> why is that. >> many were burnt, severely burnt. if we try to move them they will just crumble. >> it's still early morning here. quiet on the streets of tel aviv. we're hearing a lot of jets over head throughout the night. as the strikes continue in the gaza strip we are now hearing a response from hamas hill stands saying they're ready to fire back at israelis with full force. trace. >> we expect to hear more of that propaganda. thank you, alex. now to steve live from northern israel with hezbollah's reaction to israel's expanding ground operations in gaza. steve. >> trace, throughout the afternoon hours here we heard a number of explosions behind me. two miles back where hreb a noo. 90 plus strikes or attacks on u.s. service members since president biden took office. we have responded five times. each time it's a building in the middle of the dessert. almost no casualties. if you contrast that with the last administration. strategic powerful strikes going after the head of the snake it deters iran. >> it does, mike pompeo says to go after the leadership inside iran itself. i have 30 seconds for you. >> clearly blowing up a couple of warehouses in the dessert ends a message. not the mezzage the administration wants to send. the message they send and iran sees is weakness. they see the united states is prepared to talk a big game but not act to protect the lives of our soldiers. we hit triple digits today. a hundred strikes on american soldiers in syria and iraq since president biden took office. you want to stop it. you have to go after command and control. impose real costs. >> go after command and control. thank you, gentlemen. breaking news on the massive man hunt in maine. robert card has been found dead. police say robert card killed 18 people on a rampage well. are live in lewiston for the latest. cb, what did we learn from the news conference? how did they find the suspect. >> hi, trace. we know the suspect was found with an apparent self eufpb tphreubgted gun shot wound in a heavily wooded area in lisbon. about 15 minutes from lewiston where the mass shooting occurred. tonight maine's governor had a impassioned speech or conversation about this saying robert card is dead. four words that will have people, the thousands in maines second largest city sleeping easier tonight. we know this isn't the conclusion everybody wanted. the governor emphasizing this means he can't hurt anyone else. >> like many people i'm breathing a sigh of relief tonight knowing that robert card is no longer a threat to anyone. i know there are some people, many people that share the sentiment. i know his death may not bring solace to many. but now is a time to heal. >> now this late breaking news comes a little more than 48 hours after an intense search for the accused killer first began. today dive teams zeroing in near the boat ramp where card's saoub subaru outback was found. a rifle being tested if it was used in the shooting. this gun, one of many that the suspect owned. according to the sources. suspect is accused of injuring 18 people and injuring more than a dozen others. he also left behind a suicide note left in his home. they're still looking at the gun and bowling ali. a youth bowling coach, a 14-year-old boy and his father among the victims. card was found early thing. they are staying tight lipped on how long he was in the woods. >> we found the body at 7:45. it's 10:45 now there. is a lot of work to be done here with the medical examiner office. >> card's body near the boat ramp where dive teams search today and zeroed in. many community members question, how this army reservist with a history of mental health struggles. how was he able to keep his questions. >> good question. cb, on the scene. thank you. let's bring in retired nypd inspector. it looks like the suicide note was legit were. you surprised to hear this? >> yes, and no. the thing that i said earlier on the air, guys like this do kill themselves it's often, generally the final statement to the world. there will be significance to it. i will confess i was a bit puzzled why maybe the dogs had not found him. generally if you make a statement you want people to hear it according to the reporting the body was found a mile from the abandoned car. recordedly it was found next to the dumpster, next to the place maine recycling that fired him two weeks ago. to me that is a pretty clear statement. the place fired him. his sister-in-law said that was one of the things leading to some of the mental troubles he was more recently having. feeding into his paranoia. think if that reporting is accurate he was found near the dumpster, i think that's a message as well he felt, he was trying to communicate he was thrown out by the folks. so i'm just glad frankly he's no longer a threat. in light of his gripe against that location it could of gone another way. >> i have about 40 seconds for you, paul. i was surprised he was so close to the area they looked. it amazes me he didn't fry to get farther away. >> maybe dean he did and came b. anything is possible. we're keeping our minds open. my understanding is they deployed dogs. i'm surprised the dogs after following his scent from the car didn't go right to the location if he was there at that time there. are questions. where is the boat, for instance. the other reporting about jet skis and other stuff we have been cautious about. those stories, those questions remain and will linger. >> they didn't answer many questions tonight at the news conference. thank you, paul. under 30 minutes for sunrise in israel. it's unclear if the ground fight is done for the night. parents of a hostage held by hamas shares an experience. our breaking news coverage continues live from police say he left a suicide note and at 745 tao*eufpl eastern time his body was found with a self inflicted gun shot wound. it's not clear how long he was dead or the terrain he was found dead. in cb cotton is working on another story and updates. meantime we're back in israel. israeli troops are making in roads to gaza. we are live in tel aviv with more on the new face of the war. lucas. >> trace, today israeli fierces the largest assault into gaza and continued assault on hamas leaders. >> we're ramping up our capabilities. it will take awhile. we don't have a time line on it. we are obligated to make sure this never happens to us again. we were slapped in the face. we will make sure this doesn't happen to us again. >> as forced launched the assault. navy seals, they launched a raid in southern gaza from the sea. all israeli commandos left the target. they're looking to throw off hamas. we spoke to anis rayly police colonel who blasted way down south on october 7th. blasted his own police station taken over by hamas. >> we seek for life and peace. they seek for death, murder and massacre. this is the big difference. the thing that unite us and the unite the western world is humanity. we didn't want this thing to happen. >> today israel said the number of hostages held by ma has is 229. that includes up to ten americans. >> lucas thank you. we spent time in jerusalem with the family of a 23-year-old taken hostage by hamas october 7th. during the attack herch was hit by a grenade and lost part of his arm. video shows him put into a hamas truck and driven to gaza. that was 21 days ago. his parents have heard nothing since. >> since 89 amg capital, octoben was taken and critically wounded. we have sequentially seen a video of it. we know nothing. >> that has to be the hardest part. >> yes. >> the hardest part is knowing that our son experienced a really awful traumatic experience. lots of people were killed including his very close friend. that's really the most awful. he's now critically wounded somewhere. certainly the lack of information is painful. >> what is your thought on your son and him being in this position? >> look, i say throughout the day if he got the treatment he needed i think he can be strong and he can survive. throughout the day my mantra is we love you, be strong, survive. we love you, be strong, survive. the other night we were in new york. i couldn't sleep. sleep is like, i don't know what sleep is. it's been so long since we have slept. i was up in the middle of the night. i was trying to hard to sleep. i started to do the mantra. be strong, survive, be strong, survive. i was talking to him. it occurred to me i was talking to meme too. i'm talking to us too. that's what we can do. keep praying he some how hears his parents calling to him. be strong, survive. be strong, survive. >> they told me they're not political. but they do hope that this ground invasion would be held off for a short phaoupbt of time so they could give diplomacy a chance to bring his son out. let's bring in the bureau chief for the christian broadcasting network. chris michelle. many families feel the same way. they feel this ground invasion will ruin the diplomatic efforts. the top advisor to benjamin netanyahu feels the opposite. he said this. >> one of the goals of our operation is to free the hostages and bring them all home. we believe that's best achieved by hitting hamas and hitting hamas hard. >> two schools of thought, chris. where do you come down on this? >> right now since the beginning there were two goals they. they want to defeat hamas. they want to get the hostages. they're almost as odds with each other i talked to a special forces guy the other day. he said one of the hardest things is to get a hostage. you multiply that by 2005 cross gaza and a ground invasion it seems unsurmountable you get them. i was at the western wall, a global day of prayer for the rescue of the hostages and the missing. i talked to arab a. he said it's said the greatest anguish is for parents. like we heard. loved ones captured. what they're saying, what he also said when he talked to me there he said, you know are. >> trace: nathan we were talking about the fact florida the times of israel was reporting this had been clashes between hamas and israeli fighters and i was wondering if that is surprising and maybe a little bit of an upper hand. >> yes, i think the israeli armed forces these guys are professional. they've trained for this kind of combat. they have a clear strategy a doctrine to implement while fighting so i think israel is going to try to fight the fight that israel wants to fight and not get drawn into fighting the fight that hamas is trying to fight. so these guys need patience and opening fire walking into a pool hall and opening fire has apparently shot himself 40-year-old robert card accused killing 18 found dead near a recycling plant where he worked and apparently recently fired. card who investigators say killed those people left a suicide note and 7:45 p.m. time body found with self-inflicted gunshot wound. we don't know how long he was dead or what kind terrain his body was found in will -- are you surprised his body was found so close to the search area? we don't know what the train was he was found in. >> yeah, these are the things we don't know so i got to wait for more information but i know they had dogs out there. we would expect that you might find them quicker but you have to understand, these types of searches encompass three towns. we had officers from all over the country. they had three different states there, so manpower was tough for the large amount of area they had to search so you can expect that could be a problem. i don't really know how clothes they were to that area. >> trace: i think that's a spare assessment. i guess my timing we lot to when you found the car or had car jacket a car and kwon he never it appears never left the area and it was i mean he could have been dead for the better part of 48 hours. >> yes, i mean that's very possible. again it's unknown. they haven't released though details but i would suspect based on everything i've seen in investigating some of these in the past that that was probably immediate than later. >> trace: that's a good point. i go back to the original where you have this guy, who literally self reports that he's having these mental visions of killing people to the military and they have a yellow flag law in maine but not a red flag law but it says that law enforcement need to take away their weapons. at some point in time you have to think this guy might have fallen through the cracks. >> well, all of the things they released and i looked at so far he was institutionalized. generally that's enough of a flag to take care of that but we don't know where the authorities even notified, none of that has come out now. this is going to be the final phase and what's going to happen now, these things happen in three phases, initial response, tactical phase looking for resolution. in this case the suspect provided that but now you have detectives and investigators doing the investigation looking into all these things. but there's a lot of things done of just because the suspect is expired this case doesn't close. they're going to just start now and have to look at what was his motive for this and do the research. that helps prevent some of these in the future and we also want to know where the breakout was so i doesn't happen again. >> trace: he left a suicide note. in your experience somebody who leaves a note usually follow through with that? >> yes, i would say 99 percent of the time if we have a note we would have a body. it's pretty common. it's not the exception to the rule but more the rule so that would sound about right. >> trace: john kapinski thank you sir. >> thank you. >> trace: so it's amazing because you see the at a rally new tulane a witness saying a palestinian supporter tried to light a flag of israel on fire sparking a fire. the pro-palestinian banners said river to the sea palestine will be free calling for the state of israel to cease to exist. as you can see many israeli counterprotestors also at the rally the president of the tulane calling the violence serious and deeply troubling. anti-defamation league or adl said students at more than a hundred colleges staged walkouts demanding ending aid to israel. >> to not only call for cease-fire but stop funding the risraeli state. >> specifically praising hamas actions that killed more than 1400 people in israel, many jewish students say they're worried about their safety. >> these acts of antisemitism are getting more extreme. feels like 1939 nazi germany. >> take a look at that banging on glass that took place at cooper union in new york, adl says anti-israel protestors noticed jewish students in the college library and started slamming on the glass chanting free palestine. the jewish students stayed inside. they said they felt intimidated and vulnerable. nypd assisted escorting them out safely, many campuses beefing
