>> neil: we want to go to the white house right now. the president speaking on this issue in the last hour. jacqui? >> yeah, neil. it was the president's first remarks since we got the announcement that americans had been killed in these attacks. the president confirming the death toll of americans has risen to 14. officials revealed that there's 20 americans that are presently missing. it's not clear that all 20 of them or what number of them may be held hostage at this point in time. the president emphasized that the u.s. commitment to israel is rock solid and warned against any bad actors trying to take advantage of the situation. >> i just got off the phone, a third call with prime minister netanyahu. i told him, the united states experiences it. our response will been swift and overwhelming. i've consulted with congress throughout this crisis. when congress returns,er with announcing them to take urgent action to fund the national security requirements of our critical partners. >> national security adviser jake sullivan appeared to get choked up answer ago question about why neither israeli intelligence for u.s. intelligence saw anything of this scale coming. he also addressed reporting that while there's not yet any direct link to iran in this attack, that they are complicit that that tearist state is complicit in this by funding hamas over years, boosting their military, training people. he gave no clear answer on whether or not the u.s. is considering refreezing the $6 billion in funds that we just unlocked for that country. >> you just laid out all of the ways that iran is complicit in this and facilitated it over years of support for hamas is. that reason enough to freeze -- refreeze the $6 billion that the u.s. helped unlock for them to get in exchange for the prisoner? >> we have not had a dollar of the $6 billion spend. i'll leave it at that. >> officials say the yes was not yes, it's being considered. it was yes, calling on another reporter. but i'm also cautioned it's not a no. >> neil: jacqui heinrich at the white house on that. i want to go to this story that you've probably said. this man was taken hostage last saturday. he's been doing his best to find his mother and make sure she's safe. very good to have you. i'm sorry for this situation you're dealing with. have you heard anything since you've been talking to the media and addressing this? >> thank you for having me. no. the answer is no sadly. we have not yet heard from any government official although we have gotten promises that we will be contacted. >> where was your mother? was she add this festival? maybe you can tell us what happened. >> yeah. my mother just recently retired. saturday morning she was sitting in the porch in our home. just enjoying the morning. this tragedy was unfolding. yes. just a nice old lady on her porch. >> neil: how close was she to where this festival was going on? >> the festival was a few miles away. my mom lives near one of the epicenters for this attack. we are talking about a community of 1,000 people where we have over 100 people reported dead. more than that reported kidnapped by the hamas terrorists. >> neil: have you talked to your mother that morning? any correspondence at all? >> this attack was starting, my mom gave me a direct call. we got on to a call with me and my siblings supporting my mom and trying to re-assure her that she's safe. at that point she began to hear shouting in arabic outside of her home. shooting i'm urged here to enter the shelter and keep the door closed. she managed to do that until a certain time when my siblings heard the hamas terrorists barge in to the shelter with a lot of screaming in arabic. that's where the call got disconnected. so both my brother and sister were on the call when my mother was taken. >> i know you've been in contact with the u.s. embassy in israel. what have you learned from them? >> unfortunately the information stream both with israel government and the u.s. administration and embassy here in tel aviv was one direction. we're providing information to them and not vice versa. they're not providing any information to us. >> i heard that your mom actually was born and raised in california. right? sometimes in the 80s she moved to israel. had she had any problems, certainly nothing like this, but any incidents involving hamas? had she ever shared with you problems? >> my mom was born and raised in california. her dad was an air force engineer working for the navy. they're kind of in between naval bases in california. the area where it's at is on the border with the gaza strip. so it's not been relaxed for long years now. never to this extent of terrorism and homicide and basically destroying every living thing. children on the sidewalks and roads. >> neil: did she feel safe there? >> for the most part, people in our community including my mom did feel safe. we say that it was heaven for 95% of the time and hell for the rest 5%. because the area was terrorized with missiles every few months. you kind of get used to that reality. as tough as that may sound. i think that the terrorist attack from saturday morning broke the trust and the confidence that we had living where we're living by the gaza strip. >> neil: how are you holding up, your family holding up? >> yeah, it's tough. i think that the most important or most difficult issue for us currentlied is the uncertainty and unclarity about what's going on with my mother. the last communication that we had with her was on that call when the terrorist broke into her shelter. that was saturday morning. since then, we haven't heard anything from anyone. we do not know what happened to her. that's a very tough situation to deal with. having said that, we are strong. my mother is a very tough lady. i'm sure that she's holding up. keeping high spirits as much as possible. we're keeping strong for my mom and the rest of the people in our community. stay strong. be able to rebuild what has been destroyed. >> neil: hang in there. what you're going through, i can not imagine. hopefully you get something that will give you hope in the days ahead. just an incredible story. my best to you and your family, nahar. >> thank you very much. i appreciate it. >> neil: meantime, the fears of what is happening over there that it could happen over here. israel calls up hundreds of thousands of reservists. a warning in new york city that they're on the lock you'd for something like that here-. but they don't see any signs of it after this. there's something going around the gordon home. good thing gertrude found delsym. now what's going around is 12-hour cough relief. and the giggles. the family that takes delsym together, feels better together. liberty mutual customized my car insurance and i saved hundreds. with the money i saved, i started a dog walking business. oh. >> i talked to a chicago man that is out there fighting right now in israel. the scenes as you have seen are gruesome and heart breaking. the team says they're pushing through the pain to help save anyone that they can find still alive. going door-to-door after hamas killed hundreds of men, women and children. watch. >> to see buildings burned down, cars with bullet holes throughout them and completely smashed, bodies of dead, civilians being brought out of the settlement, it's just a shocking situation. to think to see going into a loot of these houses. >> americans like johnny, an israeli middle and the, was called back to fight. he's part of the largest draft in israel. the special operations forces team near the gaza border. that's where more than 100 bodies have been discovered in the small village. the work is far from over. new videos we're looking at show the horrific moments where people in that community appear to be kidnapped by hamas. many taken hostage. crews searching for life in that rubble as well. donnie said they found two women that survived the attack in the village. >> going into these houses and searching for these people and just seeing the insides of them turned upside-down. the door is smashed in. you can only imagine that that was hamas trying to break in. >> neil, as israel continues the draft, teams on the ground say they need more supplies on the ground like helmets and bull left proof vests that gear could mean the difference between life and death. they're out there doing everything that they can helping the women, children and men. >> neil: thanks, alexis. you might have caught on air jake sullivan, the national security adviser outlining what the united states will do right now in response to this following up on the president's address. it wasn't so much as vague comments about iran and their responsibility for this attack or helping in this attack on the part of hamas, but his answer to a question that concerns something far bigger. take a look. >> under what circumstances would you put american forces on the ground to help out? >> at this point, that is not something that is under planning. what we are focused on a when we talk about sending experts, it's people that can work on a intelligence, that can work on overall planning and coordination with the israeli government. we're not sending forces to israel. i'll leave it at that for now. >> neil: i'll leaf it at that for now. that raised a lot of questions and cures you responses from people wondering is that ultimately where this could be going. american troops on the ground in israel. general jack keane with us. general, what do you think? >> well, i'm stunned by the president's speech and also by jake sullivan's response to questions here. the president gave a heartfelt support certainly of the suffering that has taken place and the need to support israel to see this operation that they're going to conduct through to its completion. but he never ever mentioned iran who is directing their proxies to attack israel and has been doing so for 40 years. they admit that iran is broadly complicit as jake sullivan said in funding, training and supporting hamas. but we don't have any specific confirmation that they were involved in the planning or coordination of this attack. what he should have said, he said we can make this assumption based on iran's previous activities that they directed this, helped plan it, helped coordinate it and help achieve its success. therefore we are going to support israel, but we're also going to make certain that if any american hostage loses their life at the hands of the hamas, then iran, we're going to react to that. you will pay the price for that. and direct that attention to the iranian leadership. the same thing. he makes -- the president made this speech and made a clear point about the expansion of the war. he did it in reference to the aircraft carrier and the military response that is in the region. it's there to deter an expansion of the war. what are we talking about? lebanon, hezbollah opening up a northern front, possibly syria, et cetera. mostly it's all about lebanon. he should have said if you do, you have forced me to take action. we would not take support if they wouldn't have asked us to help them. they have never asked us since 1948 in every confrontation they've had. they've been able to deal with it on their own. in they want our help, we would be there. i would put that out there so the iranians understand it. that's the deterrence, not just having the ships there, but what? deterrence takes two things. you capable the capability, the enemies have to see it. they have to belief you're going to use it. those two things together gets you deterrence. he left out, i'm going to use it. that is the problem i'm having. the president needs to revisit his entire strategy dealing with iran, neil. the appeasement and contain meant strategy is not working. he's got to confront them. the only thing that they understand. really slap the sanctions on them. pull back the $6 billion. find every way you can to dry up their funding and their support. then certainly dealing with the specificses of this, do the couple things that i just mentioned so this thing doesn't get worse for the us citizens there, but also for the israeli citizens in terms of the expansion of the war. be unequivocal. be clear. this is a time when you have to find your spine and your strong moral compass and stand up for stability, security and you have to be willing to confront these adversaries. >> neil: i wish i had more time, general. what was the strategy for hamas? surely had to anticipate the sweeping response that israel is offering right now. that it would be what hamas did times ten. so whether complicit with i ran -- was the thinking that went in to that unless it's encourage ago widening of the war, bringing hezbollah into it. we got the reports from missile attacks from syria. i don't know. the strategy escapes me here. >> well, one of the basic strategies that they've always had, they want a strong military response from israel in the gaza strip. >> neil: that it would unite the arab world. >> right. they want the casualties. this is the horror of hamas. they expose the civilian population there. they're the government. their designed to protect. but they hide themselves in that population. they weaponize their factories underneath mosques and schools. and then when the israelis are coming with their guns, they want that civilian population casualty rate to go up. they want the international community to condemn the israelis. how -- the hypocrisy and horror associated with that these are their people. they want high casualty rates. that's one of the purposes here. in 16 years, they have never done anything like we have seen in the first two days of this. they know that will give a strong response from the israelis. they want it. their people will suffer. >> neil: general, we're seeing the explosions going on in gaza city right now. there had been talk of a land war, getting boots on the ground to teal with that. they put out warnings that this is coming, whether this is the beginning of that, i have no idea. who is the next stage of this as you see it? >> well, they're staging and preparing to conduct a military incursion in the gaza. their purpose here is completely different than what they have said before. before it was always go in hard, go in fast and push them back for a numbers of years before they can do this again. kill as many leaders and as many fighters as you can, destroy the missiles and what you the get your hands on of any value and the tunnels and get out. get out before the entire international community is condemning their actions. this time what the prime minister has said, he's going to change out the political entity, which is hamas, that governs gaza. that means he's going to bring in someone else and that he's going to destroy the entire network, which means the leaders, the fighters, all of the military infrastructure. he's going to stay there until that mission is completed. they have never assigned that mission to themselves before. this will take weeks and months, not the ten days, two weeks that has happened in the past. a hard and fast approach. this will be slow, require patience. it's neighborhood by neighborhood. block by block and building by building. and hopefully some of the people there that are fed up, many of them with hamas, will give the israeli troops some cooperation in terms of where the hamas fighters are that are so tortures their life for the last 16 years are. this is a long operation that is going to require the united states to stand behind them like the president has said despite the length of us and despite the casualties that will take place. it's going to test his mental. it's really unfortunate that he gave iran a pass when they're the -- they're orchestrating all of this. >> neil: thanks, general. senator mark warren from virginia could weigh-in. senator, let me ask you what the general just said. this perception that the president gave iran a pass on this. do you think he did? do you think he should have done that? >> neil, let's -- we all agree that iran has supported hamas literally for decades under democratss, republicans and everybody in between. the notion that i ran has gotten a pass i don't buy. i don't buy it on a factual basis, i don't buy it on any of the information that i've received. >> neil: does that mean any of the information you received does not show iran is complicit in this? >> what i have said is, of course iran has supported hamas. let's get all of the information out when people start talking smoking guns and other stuff. you know, we need to find out what went wrong here in terms of the israeli intelligence, even if the shortfall is on our side. neil, right now, i want the israeli intelligence and the american intelligence to focus on how we're going to take out this hamas leadership. these terrorists who committed these barbaric acts. i want the american intelligence and israeli intelligence and anyone else who wants to stand by the idea of civilization. how we don't want this violence spread to the west bank or -- >> neil: you don't think any of that intelligence leads to iran? in this case that it was realized with iran? that hamas could not have done and coordinated all of this on its own, so who else could help them in that respect? iran always comes up. >> and iran has always been material support, psychiatric support and everything else. let's get the facts out. as information comes forward. there is no excuse that iran are bad actors. it has been the policy of administration after administration. >> neil: i want to flip around, sir, what you said there. taking in at face value what you said, in this particular instance iran is not involved. >> i didn't say that at all, neil. iran has supported -- >> neil: as things stand now, senator, you cannot draw a line between hamas and this coordinated attack that was quite effective in iran. you're not willing to make that leap yourself? >> i didn't make this the absolute fact that iran has been supportive of hamas on a consistent basis -- >> neil: in this case you're saying you don't have that proof. you're not going to take that leap. >> i think you've already heard from the administration as well. when they were asked, have you teen the smoking gun yet. >> so -- the reason i ask -- now does it make you rethink the $6 billion that was unfrozen for iran? i know a number of people say iran has their hands on that do you think that was a mistake whether directly involved in this or not? that it rewarded or potentially could have rewarded this type of behavior in the future? >> neil, i mean, one of the reasons why i like going on with you, you're not a talking head that deals with o'er this than a factual basis. in anybody believes assuming this has been planned out for months from hamas that somehow the notion of this money, a dollar of which has not been released, as blinken indicated, that that somehow was the driving force behind this attack as some have implicated, i don't think the fakes bear that out. it's disingenuous when people say those dollars have not been released, that deal was supposedly only made in the last few weeks, not months and months ago. again, i think it's a bit ironic that when we say that we want to support israel on getting back all of their citizens and how israel gave up 1,000 palestinian prisoners to get a soldier back to say that the united states of america shouldn't do all it can to get back our american ci citizens whether they're held in iran or in russia? i think we have to stand for our citizens as much as israel stand for its citizens. >> neil: we can go back and forth on that for quite some time. i want your take on something else that jake sullivan said about the possibility of american troops ever getting involved in israel. more or less signalling that's not something that we're looking at. it's not something that we're considering. i don't want to mist quote him. that was the gist of it. do you think it is an option? do you think that if israel came to us, senator and said we think would be more effective if we had some of your soldiers here? it would make a big and broad statement? >> well, neil, we're sending the gerald ford with literally thousands of sailors outs of norfolk, virginia and a battle crew to that region. the president has been explicit that entities that want to try to expand this conflict don't. i think it would be frankly irresponsible before israel makes any kind of additional asks beyond material to go down any other path. let's get israel the materials that they need, let's make sure that we do all we can in a concerted effort to make sure that this does and spread violence to the west bank and let's hold this world opinion together that these brutal terrorists need to be eliminated. neil, i think while we need to stabbed by our democratic ally in israel, we also need to stand by our democratic ally in ukraine who less than ten days ago, the russians brutally murdered as well a whole village that was at a funeral of ukrainian soldiers. >> neil: so you would be for continued funding -- for continued funding for ukraine and funding to help israel as needed. you would not favor one over the other? they both need our help? >> i believe we need to stand by our democratic allies when we have countries like china saying western democracy is in demise. we have putin saying the west is going to get tired and now we've got these barbaric actions by hamas. america has to stand with our democratic allies when they're under assault in more than one theater and i think we have that capacity. >> neil: for both ukraine and israel. >> they're both democratic allies under assault by a terrorist group and under assault by a regime that i believe has committed war crimes. >> neil: senator mark warner, thanks, sir. >> thank you, neil. >> neil: we have a lot more coming up. there's a speaker race going on in this country. could be resolved by tomorrow at this time. hard to say. we're on the latest on that after this. providing for your family is a top priority. but what happens when you need affordable health care?
