no accident. it's bidenomics. >> why do you think most people still don't feel positive or feel good news about the economy? >> i think the people of 300,000 plus people are better about the economy. you are not the happiest people in the world, which you report, i mean it sincerely. it gets more -- you get more legs when you report something is negative. >> sandra: moments ago and president biden latest attempt to sell bidenomics yet again to the american voter. this after the latest jobs report shows more jobs added than expected but those gains could be bad news for millions of americans drowning in debt and struggling to afford basic goods and higher mortgage payments. i'm sandra smith in new york. hi. >> john: good to spend friday afternoon with you. john roberts in washington. this is "america reports." u.s. economy added 336,000 jobs, the unemployment rate steady at 3.8%. but that is likely unwelcome news for federal reserve chair jay powell as the hiring pick-up could make him less confident that his battle to rein inflation is working. >> sandra: right to it. robert wolf is here, former obama economic adviser and steve moore, welcome to both of you. i'm assuming that our viewers knew we would dig into this and the president's words a moment ago, how is it possible, steve, that this president feels he can take a victory lap when people are paying for the sky high inflation to come down. right? the jobs are added, we've got a search out now, more and more americans are taking on second jobs to pay for this. we'll have a breakdown for that shortly. but you've got people paying the highest mortgage rates they ever have in the country today, they are taking on more and more debt to pay those payments now, i mean -- is it fair to say bidenomics is working? >> well, american people are not buying that. look, the jobs market right now continues to be strong. and this was a good report for jobs and happy to see it. i never root against america and i want to see everyone have a high-paying job. the other hand, i think what president biden is missing is that american families are stressed out financially. no question about it. people are angry about what's happening in washington, they see what's happening with their own balance sheet. as we have talked about on the show before, people have run up record credit card debt, a hard time paying that back, and the mess in washington with the $2 trillion of debt we added this year. so people -- every poll, by the way, sandra, for the last nine months, whether it's a fox poll, abc poll, msnbc, 70% of americans think the economy is headed in the wrong direction because they see it in their own finances. >> sandra: now takes about 44%, robert, of the average american's income to pay for their mortgage payment, their monthly mortgage payment. you have the highest 30-year mortgage rate since 2000, 7.5% it is now. homes are unaffordable in 99% of the u.s. for the average american. so, while we all agree, we want to cheer on america and we want to take this jobs report and say that's good news, can we celebrate knowing all of this stuff is happening over there? what good is more money or more job or more work if you can't pay for all this stuff? >> well, there's certain things to celebrate and certain things to absolutely be concerned about. i think you can have both sides of that equation. we are celebrating that there's 14 million jobs in the last over -- since biden has been in office. celebrating 4% unemployment for 20 straight months or below that number. we are also concerned that inflation is still high, and the federal fed will continue to likely raise interest rates. and former fed chair, paul volker, a close friend of mine i worked for him, told me inflation impacts every individual each and every day. unemployment impacts those who are unemployed. so yes, president biden was accurate, 336,000 people that were now recently employed is great for them. but it's also important to know that although inflation has come down dramatically, it is still -- we are still seeing high prices at the gas pump and high prices in the supermarket. >> sandra: i don't want to interrupt you but important the way you phrase that, inflation has not come down, it's not down, that's really, really important distinction. it has slowed. the rate going up has slowed. steve, this is the president saying that the polling on americans not feel great about the economy, that it's not really the way they should feel. listen. >> they're better off financially than they were before, it's a fact. and all that data, all that polling stuff shows they think they are more positive about the economy than they have been, more positive about their jobs, etc. >> sandra: that's not the case. 78% of americans say the economy is fair or poor, just 22% say it's good or excellent. this -- these are the mortgage rates under the president. the reason we keep focusing on, this is where the market is. the market is trying to anticipate based on what is happening in the economy today, and the fact that we have not seen a major slowdown as a result of these rates going way up, that's going to make the fed nervous, and they might have to raise even further. that's going to hit the housing market, the credit card market, the car market, student loan market, everything will be affected by that. this is the labor secretary, julie su, insisting the president's policies are working. >> this jobs report is no different. demonstrates to us that our economic policies are working, we still have more work to do and we'll continue to do it. >> sandra: if there are more jobs added, tell me if i'm right or wrong, a chunk is a rebound of the pandemic, right? >> of course. >> sandra: as are a lot of the jobs created by the presidency. if you have this happening and these are good economic headlines, but we are all going to see these rates continue to go up to pay for this unnecessary inflation, where does that leave all of us? >> it makes me nervous and a lot of americans nervous. i agree with what robert said, i think he's right, and we are concerned about the inflation. and look, i want to make sure that people can connect the dots. this inflation just did not happen by accident, it happened because biden came in and spent $6 trillion and i work for trump and trump spent too much money, too. but the fact is, when you have these massive debts at the federal level, then you have americans in a debt problem, they have a problem paying their credit card debt and you mention what happened with mortgages. i want to give you a statistic that i think is amazing. that when trump left office, sandra, the mortgage rate in the united states was 2.9%. today in many areas it's 7.5%. that means it's pricing a lot of people out of the housing market, a lot of young people can't buy a new home because of the rates, plus it means that if you do buy a house, let's say a $400,000 house, because of those higher interest rates you pay $100,000 more in payments over 30 years. so this is biting everybody's finances, and i think people are really nervous. >> sandra: really interesting, the number of multiple job holders, according to the federal reserve, back up to 8.15 million. robert, are you qualified to weigh in on that right away? >> this is definitely being negative. a few positives. wages up 6%. 4% versus 3.6. >> sandra: they were down in the report for september. >> higher than inflation, 4.1% versus 3.6%. >> sandra: looking at the big picture here. go ahead, finish your thought real quick. >> number two, when trump was in office, we were almost 10 million jobs unemployed. comparing apples and oranges. inflation is higher than we want it to be, it's coming down and wages are going up. so i could give -- for every aspect that steve is negative, i could easily play -- >> sandra: steve, five seconds. >> new home sales up over 30%, over 30%, not down. >> i think we have to change the direction of this country. i'm with the voters. things are seriously off track right now and let's get this debt down so we can have a prosperous america. >> sandra: perspective, back to pre-pandemic levels of the number of multiple job holders, and we are near, i'm going back to 1996, near the highest that number has ever been. so, take that into consideration, those that are getting a second or third job because they need it in this environment. >> what's the old joke, a lot of jobs out there, i know that, because i have three of them. >> sandra: i appreciate the conversation. thank you very much, gentlemen. all right. john, what do you have on your mind? this was an interesting moment, the president and this report. >> john: i was stuck on the dog in the lake and the boy story that he was trying to talk about there in terms of chastising the media. but then david asmund pointed out the president said this. listen here. >> remember what we talk about, 50 corporations that made $40 billion, were not paying a penny in taxes. guess what, we made them pay 30% -- 15% in taxes, 15%. nowhere near what they should pay and guess what, able to pay for everything and we end up with an actual surplus. >> john: i'm trying -- what's he talking about? what is he talking about? >> sandra: that has been obviously debunked many, many times. you and david asmund are on that. i'm on the fact he thinks this is an opportunity for him and his re-election bid with the way people feel and the way the real economy is out there. >> john: when he said the polls showed people are optimistic about the economy -- what poll has he been looking at? >> sandra: and that constant sort of demonization of people who are successful in this country, those who have made money and prospered, and telling them that they are not doing enough, or doing their part. we have heard it before. >> john: he's telling people who are struggling that they are successful, and the people who are successful he's demonizing. it's an interesting strategy. by the way, speaking of polls, sandra, a new poll showing a possible head to head match-up between president biden and former president trump in 2024 still remains close, with trump ahead of biden 51 to 48% now, this is a marquette law school poll, and when it comes to the major issues look at this. trump in the lead on everything from the economy to foreign policy and holds a 24 point lead on immigration as president biden back tracks on his border policies while the migrant crisis unravels at the southern border. henry cuellar's district is expected to get the 20 miles of border wall, he will join us, he calls it a 14th century solution to a 21st century problem. no, still me. former president donald trump endorsing congressman jim jordan for house speaker. he calls the ohio republican a star. trump notes he is also willing to step up to the plate himself if necessary. chad pergram live on capitol hill with the details. boy, this trump endorsement of jordan will make the vote next week pretty interesting, chad. >> absolutely, john, and depends who you ask. who it hurts, who it helps. some republicans wanted a clean break from the former president, he is radioactive to some republicans, but it means others will gravitate toward jim jordan. >> i said boss, that's what you think, that's what you believe, you are the leader of our party, i will support that. so if we can't get there after a few days, maybe a week, maybe we need to look at somebody outside the conference. >> in exact, may take some time to elect a speaker. republicans plan to vote in private off the floor next wednesday. but the winner among house republicans may lack support to win in the house itself. it's about the math. so republicans may not vote on the floor for days, at least until they have someone they know can win. >> it has to happen. we shouldn't go to the house floor until we have 218 votes for the speaker of the united states house of representatives, shouldn't have to go through what we did in january. >> members are starting to get nervous the gop will not coalesce around any candidate for a lengthy period. worried the public interprets that as chaos. >> we have to get this resolved soon, but then go back fighting for the families who are struggling. that's what the real fight is about. >> now, it took five days and 15 rounds to elect kevin mccarthy as speaker in january. the gop believes those proceedings were a bad look so they hope to curb the bad op particulars by not fighting on the floor until there's a clear winner. john. >> john: next wednesday is going to be an interesting day. >> and thursday, and friday, and maybe saturday. >> john: no, no, don't say it. wednesday is going to be an interesting day, chad. let's start there. all right, thanks. >> sandra: and every day in between. crime spiralling out of control in d.c. another liberal lawmaker is attacked. who the democratic mayor is blaming for that, next. plus this. >> at some point you know, maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members. >> john: oh, first deplorables now at it again. failed presidential candidate hillary clinton floating the idea of deprogramming a very specific group of republican voters. rnc chair woman ronna mcdaniel just ahead . the va home loan benefit. with the lower rate newday 100 va cash out loan, you can pay off high rate credit cards and car loans. and can save $6,000 a year. that's real money you can use to take care of your family and home. having diabetes can raise a lot of questions. like my morning ride, will it help lower my glucose?
