>> spending is at the heart of this impasse. does the president berni response ability for the shutdown? >> absolutely not. they taken the smallest amount of spending, do nothing about taxes for the rich and want to cut the smallest amount of spending, that is not serious fiscal conversation. rachel: morgan luttrell and jan crenshaw breakdown the status of the potential shutdown coming up at 8:30 this morning. disingenuous, the debate, a big part of that debate on government spending and the shutdown is really about ukraine money. it is about they want to cut money for head start, that's not true. it's about ukraine money. you can decide for yourselves whether you think the strategy matt gaetz is using is a good one or if they are going to lose in the end and get less cut but it really is about separating that ukraine money. pete: it' s a losing proposition. you don't control the senate, you don't control the white house, you are not going to get all of what you what. what are you prioritizing? ukraine is one of those at this point. joe: can you not come around some of these issues, the republican caucus probably could get that done. there's pressure to push the senate towards it but when you have matt gaetz and others that want the attention, want to raise money and improve their own profile and this is what they have wedged for themselves, you can't find something to get them passionate about they will chew you alive. rachel: interesting to hear them say the shutdown is going to affect the border. >> the republican caucus is split on ukraine. it's getting people on the same page, the issue people are passionate about. >> on this issue there's a person who is a democrat who believes in taking away funding from ukraine and securing the border. robert f kennedy junior is making a big announcement in about a week and we think it might be on an independent run to be splitting the ticket. does this take from donald trump or president biden? rachel: president biden brought this on by not allowing him to be part of the process. president biden won't even let him, imagine with his family history, won't give him secret service protection, that is absolutely -- pete: we know he's making a major announcement, this particular website believes it might be an independent run, that's what we are hearing, here's robert f kennedy himself in and add, teasing that he's making a major announcement on october 8th. >> i'm going to be in philadelphia october 9th to make a major announcement. won't tell you now what that announcement will be. i can set that if you have been waiting to come to one of my public events, this is the one to come to. pete: interesting conversation. maybe it will bear out in initial polls, in what direction does his 10% or 15% go, does he maintain that 10% or 15%? you could say his last name is kennedy so he takes from biden or he's an outside with an independent streak, antiestablishment so maybe he takes a little from trump too. i don't know. joe: the biggest thing to compare him to his bernie sanders. a lot of bernie breauxs support trump and a lot have nothing to do with president biden or hillary clinton. maybe you could look at that, polling, post election polling who would have pre-served -- preferred bernie sanders and get sample size or something you there but he still a democrat, comes out pretty radical left on issues like abortion is pretty left, guns is pretty left. that has been his legacy before vaccines became -- to identify him or define him. i don't know that he pools a lot. if they look into him at all. i don't think trump voters will vote for anyone that would want to restrict your guns. rachel: he would draw from democrat to miss the old democrat party, somebody had little bit of an outsider streak, suspicious of globalism and then somebody also who cares about the working class. i think the reason rfk junior went to the border was to see the chaos and humanitarian crisis down there, but he's an old-school democrat who understands what is happening at the border, what is pouring in, the millions of people are going to affect the poor and working-class because they are competing. joe: legal immigration is a good thing for this country but legal is absolutely -- it's a necessity. will: your often right and i hope in this case you are. it's too early but i think those indicators you point out are important, the more people you mention get educated on his stances. rachel: i've met so many independents are generally tended to vote democrat when those were the choices but really like jfk junior, but voting for a trump, plan on voting for trump in this election until jfk junior came in. >> funding on x, the name last night was ross perot. what did ross perot give us? two terms of bill clinton. ross perot would have won the election. joe: pulled out in july leading, then came back and in october and still pulled the highest third-party ever. don't remember if you pulled out of the republican primary and came back as an independent but he was either beating the republican or leading in the republican primary or overall. when he came back, still had the highest third-party over, it was indicative of people being fed up. the thing about rfk, the republican donor, don't have the money to go into politics most of the time. i would pour money is a republican donor into the student body organizations supporting rfk junior. i would cite the liberal young vote away from biden as fast as i could, that would be the best way to get a republican in the white house. joe: i should mention my husband sean's very first presidential election was for ross perot. he was a ross perot guy. >> ross perot is fine but he gave us bill clinton. pete: coming after another one of yours. rachel: they are moving through, they artie moved through your refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher, air conditioner, thermostat, now they are going for gas furnaces and so this is at the direction, this is from energy secretary jennifer granholm, at the direction of congress the department of energy is continuing to review and finalize energy standards for household appliances such as residential furnaces to lower costs for working families, by reducing energy use and cutting carbon pollutants in homes across the nation. also at the department of energy working on ceiling fans, the humidifiers, there is -- battery charger -- there is 0 demand for this in america given all the problems we are facing. it is not the job of the government to pick your home appliances. joe: -- pete: the biden administration has taken 110 actions energy efficiency rules as part of their climate agenda. it's going to be, what was this one? >> we have been hearing that there is a rumor that going to a coed format is one of 5 or 6 options, informally it has been understood but we don't know. we wanted to get ahead of this, build a coalition of folks that didn't see this as a viable option, stick to the original documents that the school originally was based on 135 years ago. pete: there are not many all boy institutions in the country, why do you wanted to stay that way? >> that's exactly why. there aren't very many options. there is reams of data that show single-sex high school education for boys is superior. go to the columbia graduate school of education and they don't even admit that and we think it should remain as it is and continue to move forward for the next 135 years while adhering to the original documents the founders intended. pete: you mentioned the original documents of our country and that school, originally our faith-based school, i don't know if it still is but the school also published a new strategic plan saying they want to be an antiracist school which is one of those buzzwords of institutions that have been taken over by the left so is this just one step in a school that is slowly being transformed? >> the school that i went to and graduated from in 1984 really pushed body, mind, and moral warriorship. a lot of us went on to military, army, all branches, many of us graduated and went on to industry and i think it is important to note that this is a unique prep school, not your classic dc beltway to new england, ivy league type prep school, people certainly go to those schools but it embodies the blue collar personality of western pennsylvania. people come from all walks of life and they get together and bond. i think it is a unique experience and traditional class education and needs to be maintained and deserves the right to be -- i have 19 nephews, my two sons, all of my teammates and classmates feel the same way. i don't think the school was given the opportunity to take that barometric reading on what they are willing to do to maintain this. pete: hope you can mobilize the alumni. if not, it's going to become just another woke coed school and we have lots of those in this country. that is the standard. >> 135 years old, this withstood wars, depression, recession, all kinds of civil unrest. got to fight for the school and we've got a group of people not willing to let the school go, the country is counting on it. this is -- pete: everybody has to protect the institutions they are invested in or we lose them all and that is what you are doing, appreciate your time. >> help us at our go fund me or go account and please help us, we need everybody. pete: by the way, we reached out to the school for comment, we did not hear back. good luck. fox weather alert, torrential rainfall having new york city, sending waves of water into subway stations. rick has the maps coming up next. get ready for kickoff, colorado taking on usc on fox. ♪ but aren't we missing something? if you were voting today who would vote for president biden? we got at least one undecided and a couple that may be persuaded. i want to ask about ron desantis, you watched the debate, ron desantis points out two things, he says he has a better record on covid and the only ones that can get elected. what do you think? >> i liked desantis early but he hasn't had the bump he needed. he made a mistake early when he refused to go after trump early on, he said he was not going to engage in that type of smear campaign. unfortunately that is what gets people elected these days. he may have made a mistake and it's too late for him to have the bump it would need to overcome the massive bleed donald trump has. pete: a lot of people think he won, ron desantis? >> i think all the candidates, were acting very nervous and talking over each other. at some point had to turn off the tv because i couldn't watch them acting like children in an out-of-control classroom. i like that he didn't close schools in new york city, we closed schools for so long, the learning loss our children facing is so massive. particularly in children's learning, has been so huge and we are not addressing that even today. pete: maybe you have a candidate. when ron desantis says he's believes the only republican who can win the election you agree with that? >> the problem is he never made the case. he never made the case why he can beat trump. everybody knows politically ron desantis knows he is a policy wonk, never leans into strength so now he's paying the political price for not playing into his strength and getting a message out why he can beat trump. joe: what's his strength? >> he knows policy, has a broad coalition of support, things he should have played into early on. joe: another candidate who may become an independent, the only one really challenging president biden. rfk junior teased and announcement as speculation swirled about an independent run, could spell disaster for biden and trump. this says robert f kennedy junior planning to announce an independent run. that's what they are reporting. the video is a big announcement and if you are going to support me this is the place to do it. looking at what he has carved out for himself there are two topics that some liberals and some conservatives like him. one is funding the war in ukraine and the other one is vaccine and the way covid was handled. what do you think about his positions on those issues? >> i want to continue supporting ukraine. my husband's family became a refugee in ukraine last year, lost everything at the age of 85. i want america leading the war. joe: which one would have a better chance of winning your vote from biden? >> i don't know. i need to learn more about rfk's position on school choice. he's not for school choice and this is so important for parents today. we want our kids to have a good school, control what our kids are learning at if he's not pro-school choice i would have to take another look at both candidates. joe: you are pretty much for donald trump. does rfk junior do anything for you? >> is very interesting but i realized a long time ago the democratic party is never going to allow him, his only avenue would be to go independent and i feel in doing so he will only strengthen whoever the republican candidate ends up being, i believe he will take more votes from president biden. >> reporter: you are the guy who's not sure yet. is rfk junior a viable option?
