strike threat. alex? >> the labor department says they're keeping close watch on the talks. there's nine days left for the uaw and detroit's big three to agree to a new four-year deal. if they don't, the 146,000 members have voted to strike. the union's demands are bold. members are seeking a 46% pay raise, 40 hours of pay for 32 hour work weeks and for traditional pensions to be restored and cost of living increases. workers say the companies have raked in billions on their backs. a g.m. executive said the demands have significant costs attached that would threaten manufacturing momentum. it's clear the two sides are still wide aparty. while in philadelphia yesterday forks labor day, president biden said he's not so concerned. >> mr. president, are you worried about an auto strike? [inaudible] >> he said he doesn't think it's going to happen. uaw's president says he was shocked by this reaction. they said maybe he knows something we don't know. this all comes at a time when ford and general motors are dealing with foreign manufacturers. there's the buy ten's push for electric vehicles that are assembled and require less labor to produce. while the president said he does not think a strike will happen, other industry experts do feeling that workers are encouraged by the strike in hollywood and the win by ups drivers. charles, a 40-day strike by the auto workers in 2019 cost g.m. nearly $4 billion. >> alex, thanks very much. the white house defending president biden's handling of the economy. a new poll suggests americans are not buying it. want to bring in edward lawrence who is back with this part of the story. edward? >> americans are bombarded with the successes of president biden's administration. advisers are picking and choosing the time frame, for example, of the successes. they're also hearing this on tv. listen. in today inflation is down to 3%. unemployment, the lowest in decades. there's more to do. president biden is getting results that matter. >> they're desperately trying to change the poll numbers showing 63% of people see the economy as not so good or poor and 37% see it as good or excellent. the white house economic advisers telling voters to live in the real world. >> i got to live in the real world. the real world, real wages are beating prices. that is a very welcome trend. >> but people are living in the real worked and see overall inflation up 16%. food at home is up 20% in that same time. and now we've got another big union strike on the horizon, this one, the uaw. >> if we pass that september 14 date, will you then step in? >> we're watching. i think it's premature to talk about what will happen afterwards. the contract has not expired. it's a tight labor market in which unions have the ability to demand better working conditions, better wages. we've seen historic gains in other industries and we're hopeful that something can happen here, too. >> but the last inflation indicator actually rose. if you look at prices or wages, real wages since the president took office, they're down about 3%. americans feel it. charles? >> absolutely. thanks, edward. so from big labor it theres to consumers still feeling inflation pain, how will this impact the 2024 race. i want to bring in douglas and laura fink. doug, a lot to cover here. we do it every day. nobody is better. people are -- the poll numbers aren't that great at all with respect to any economic data point. >> that's exactly right. i think what ed lawrence said is the key. overall during the president's tenure, real wages are down. they like to tout a low unpoint rate. people are getting a job but they're not getting ahead. they're getting further behind on sensitive items, food, energy, shelter, inflation is higher than the average. we've seen gas prices up again. none of that sounds like good news to consumers. they make less at work and they have to spend a lot at home. so i'm not surprised about the numbers. >> laura, one of the things is we had a lot of stimulus under president biden. now we're starting to hear from the federal reserve that it's about gone, all gone. you're starting to feel it and see it in other areas as well. how concerned should the white house be? not necessarily about today's numbers but the numbers that could be on the horizon. >> you're always concerned about the economy. the strong unemployment numbers, the fact that real wages are making a comeback and we see with these wins by unions every single week, it seems, there's another union getting a big pay increase. airline pilots, increase their pay by 46%. ups workers eliminated a two-tier system that treated workers like second class citizens. got air conditioning in their vehicles and got pay raises. this increases the real pay wages as well. with 71% of american as proving labor unions, they're supportive of the working class community that is fighting for what they believe as most americans do, the record breaking profits from the auto industry and beyond should be shared with the men and women who are assembling the cars and working to put food on the table for their families. >> i can see that in ford's last quarterly earnings. >> i saw stellaris was up by a billion dollars. record profit. >> it's not record. >> big increases that will have to get passed on. this is bidenomics in action. in a few classes people get ahead. everybody else pays higher prices. that's why it's not generally popular. you have to have something that is broad based, real growth for everybody. they don't have that. everything picks winners and losers and a lot of americans are not happy about this. >> workers that are not unionized benefit from the rise in wages. my colleague would know that. unionized wages goes up inproving all workers. >> doug, i know -- >> the workers have to go buy things at stores. they have to ship things ups and buy cars. they'll all be more expensive. why is that getting ahead? >> and -- >> laura, what do you say -- >> [talking over each other]. >> laura -- >> -- ultimately republicans will to better, you'll have evidence. >> doug? >> among the things the biden administration does effectively is to shift the time frames to be in their favor. they have not lowered in i prescription drug prices. they haven't built a solar farm yet. they haven't done any of the things that they claim that they have done. people know that, but they want credit for it. >> neil: what we have seen, laura, the housing market is as un-fordable as ever. a young family can forget about the dream of owning a home. the cars are the most expensive efforts. we're talking about basic things that americans want that they think is a birth right. you know, when i get out of school, i want to get a job and buy a car. there's no cars under $20,000. doug is right. once these unions win and they will win, those costs are passed on. that is economics 101. >> here's the other 101. in order to tamp down inflation, you need to raise interest rates. paul volcker knew that in the 80s and now we see -- >> where did the inflation come from? you brought up a great point? where did that inflation come from? >> you can't have it both ways. you can't have it both ways. the low unemployment rate, the rapidly rising labor costs are part of an overstimulated economy that traces to the american rescue plan, forced the fed's hand for record increases in rates. you don't get credit for the unemployment rate when it's a symptom of the problems created by overstimulus and bad physical policy. >> by the way -- >> does he get credit -- >> what is the solution? >> i'd love to bring it up. it's obviously a conversation that we will pick up. thanks very much. by the way, if you happen to hit the road this weekend, folks, you did notice something. the price at the pump. now gas prices may be heading higher. price of crude is rising because saudi arabia and russian are cutting production. and how long will the heat wave last? >> charles, it's not exactly the busiest airport in america but could get busier if some people have their way. it's 1 of 11 sites that the biden administration has given to new york officials to try to a leighate that crush of migrants in new york city. tens of thousands of them have been bussed to new york from texas. others have made their way to new york on their own. the city is now just about tapped out. they're ready to cry uncle saying they need to send them somewhere. as i said, this is one of 11 places that they could go along with an irs office in long island and other upstate new york airport. no decisions have been made. it's gotten a lot of blowback. people think it's not doable, that includes the democratic governor of new jersey, phil murphy who is famous for saying new jersey is a sanctuary state. when it comes to sending 60,000 migrants, i can't do that. >> i don't see any scenario, eric, where we can take in a program in atlantic city or frankly elsewhere in the state. you need scale, enormous amount of federal support, resources that go beyond anything that we can afford. >> charles, republicans here say that the governor needs to do more than say we can't do this. he needs to get president biden on the phone and tell his ally that this is just a nonstarter. listen. >> it's is time for governor murphy not only to state that he's against it, to go to the president and say this is not acceptable. ly not support it. it's timer for this governor to block it from happening in any way. >> charles, it's worth noting, the atlantic city airport is not in atlantic stu but in egg harbor, new jersey. it has a population of about 50,000 people. the numbers that they're talking and sending would be 60,000. do the math on that. it's one way to grow your town but maybe not the way local folks here would like. charles? >> charles: it's not the old gold rush. that's for sure. thanks, jeff. appreciate it. so new york republican congress woman nicole malliotakis has been protesting. she joins my now. one of the things is that stands out is the infighting among the democrats. you know, so easy to wave the banner and quote the statue of liberty and all of these sort of things when it feels like migrants are going in these small republican towns in texas and the southern border. now there's a lot of infighting and it's kind of a marvel to watch. >> yeah, look, this is a case of the democrats rhetoric. their sanctuary policies, open border policies finally catching up to them. they accused republicans that wanted to have security borders and have a process in place to know who is coming in and out of the country to be racist, anti-immigrants. that couldn't be further from the truth. i represent a community made up of immigrants including my own parents. my people are saying hey, we followed the rules, we did everything right. we never asked for anything. why are we being subjected to pay for the housing, the education and healthcare of people coming over illegally. as a matter of fact, half to 2/3s of the individuals claiming asylum are being rejected in court when they get their court date. they're taking advantage of our generosity and we cannot allow that to happen. as you know, and your network has been reporting, we have individuals being smuggled by isis, individuals being human trafficked but the drug cartels. those are the individuals taking advantage of this seasonal. we can't allow it to continue. it's not safe, it's not sustainable and absolutely wrong what our mayor and governor are doing to incentivize it. act the fact that schumer won't bring up our security act is a disgrace. >> charles: over the weekend, david patterson says he agrees with you that the biden administration is botching this. take a listen. >> a shout out to nicole malliotakis who explains the whole situation and how it will happen better than anybody. shows talking about the fact that had they planned for this prior to sending the migrants, how the federal park service and a lot of the service agencies could have prepared for it in the states where the migrants would be sent. instead, they didn't do that. she also points out these asylum hearings are not going in the favor of the migrants. about 50%. so if you can calculate that from the very beginning, that would have been a reason not to allow that many people to come in. i couldn't agree more. >> charles: high price. with both sides criticizing this handling of this crisis, wentsy the biden administration listen something why isn't -- why aren't leaders in the democratic party doing something about this? >> look, they're obviously doing this on purpose. they're trying to disrupt society, trying to disrupt our nation. they're causing great havoc in communities. there's a lot of infighting over this. i wish the other democrats in new york had the same common sense as david paterson. look at our mayor. he continues to misinterpret the right to shelter law, continues to insist that new yorkers have a responsibility to house these individuals. our governor, keep asking for more federal funds to continue to incentivize she's individuals. we have citizens waiting on the list for years, veterans, domestic violence victims. this is her priority to give to illegals. it's outrageous. i blame everyone from the president down to my mayor and chuck schumer. where is chuck schumer? he won't let the members elected to represent their states to vote on hr-2. our border security act. he needs to do that right away. >> charles: that brings up something that you've been controversial with recently. we talked about this in the past. staten idea seceding, be its own entity. you're making a push for that. >> we have to push for it. we pay a higher effective tax rate than any other borough in new york. we did not vote for the mayor, the governor or the president. combined we're suffering as a result of these policies particularly from the city of new york. i think a lot of my colleagues ands will residents want this reconsidered. there was a referendum 30 years ago, 65% said they wanted it. the problem is the state legislature and the city council have to be the ones to let it go. we have a forgotten burrow when it comes to transportation and healthcare. we don't get a fair share. when it comes to charging us a higher property tax rated or putting shelters in our district, then they remember where statten island is. it's a double standard. i don't think we should take it anymore. we should move forward on how to secede and self-govern. >> charles: thanks, nicole. >> thank you. >> charles: and new warnings for president joe biden over his age. is republican candidate nikki haley the answer?
