whampleght are my thoughts about what? >> running for re-election in 2026. >> oh, ha ha -- >> did you hear the question, senator, running for re-election in 2026? >> yes. >> i'm sorry, y'all, we are going to need a minute. senator. somebody else have a question, please speak up? >> laura: no, is he not okay. now, bizarrely, after that disturbing episode, neither of the two questions that followed referenced what just happened. but this was the final question. >> what is your reaction on trump's latest indictment? would you support him as a nominee? >> it's a question about trump. yeah, i'm not going to comment about the presidential race. either on the republican or the democratic side. >> mcconnell spokesperson tried to explain all of this away saying mitch felt momentarily light headed and paused during that press conference. now, that's not what we saw this is a pause. we have real problems here. in both parties. our government is about to begin what are monumentally negotiations over the budget and appropriations. five men are supposed to play a dominant role in those talks. biden is 80 years old. schumer 72, mcconnell 81. and mccarthy, hakeem jeffries both in their 50's. now this means at least two of those five involved in deciding how we spend trillions of our tax dollars, they are no longer capable of working full time. and both sadly show obvious symptoms of both serious and cognitive decline. this is always a tough situation in any family but in this case, with the authority and the power that they have they have no words for their wives and families who keep pushing them out there. wait a second. wait a second. jill is not a dock, to a real one. so she can't diagnose biden's obvious deterioration? >> now i would yield to -- who am i yielding to? >> distinguished guest, the president of the republic of korea. [laughter] >> we needed the voice of god to tell us that. [laughter] >> laura: neither mcconnell or biden should be in their current jobs. we all know that and given everything we know about the foreign money trail, biden is likely compromised not just by his health but by the millions and millions his family has made overseas. but being corrupt is bad. being corrupt and senile is even worse. and as for senator mcconnell, he should be at home enjoying his twilight years he did some really good stuff with supreme court nominations and he should get credit for that. but every member of the republican conference should have compassionately urged him to step aside five weeks ago, which is the last time when this happened. the fact that no one did this to our knowledge is stunning and frankly irresponsible. of course, as the angle has noted previously, the democrats, they are only going to dump biden if they think he has become a political liability. they haven't thought that yet. remember, they actually prefer having a puppet like biden as president because he is easily manipulated. but, republicans can't feinstein mcconnell. in other words, let him continue on like this. it's cruel. and it also negates their ability to make biden's own decrepit state an issue in 2024. >> remember the g.o.p. senate chooses to replace mcconnell should not be his establishment understudy. instead he or she should reflect the majority views of the party on china, on the border, on the deep state, the need to reform it, ukraine, and trade. as i said the other night, we have already won the debate on the big issues in the g.o.p. and there's no going back to 2005, kids. joijoining me now chris bedford common editor. ned roin majority founder and ceo. chris, who can we look to as a potential mcconnell replacement. >> i don't see anyone in the ranks right now really standing out. the person who is going to be mcconnell's replacement is going to be the person that shuffles the most money toward the senate colleagues. you were exactly right when you said who is negotiating on behalf of the republicans on behalf of conservatives? the answer right now is no one. there is basically no one in the senate g.o.p. who is particularly leadership level who is particularly interested in negotiating on anything. right now the democratic party is literally arresting and charging their political opposition. there is not even any kind of attempts to withhold money from that government that's doing that. and even though for years for release for months and months and maybe even years, his senate colleagues have noticed that mitch mcconnell sadly declining, none of them are willing to speak out about it because anyone who does is going to lose access to that money that he funnels. so people like rick scott can stand up and say i have got an idea. i have got a plan heroically and say i want to replace mcconnell. until they are able to follow that money toward all those no names in the u.s. senate, they are not going to get very far. >> laura: ned, that's depressing. >> it's realistic. >> laura: we have so soldier on here though. mitch mcconnell is out of step with the republican party. he is. that has to change. because right now like all i see is rubber stamp, rubber stamp, rubber stamp. as long as ukraine is getting it's f-16s there is no negotiation at all going on. today what we saw was both sad and also for people who want change infuriating. >> no. i totally agree. mitch mcconnell has been deeply antagonistic towards america first. it's clear he is in cognitive decline. at a minimum he needs to step down from his leadership role, become a back bencher and vacate that spot, i will not advocate for him laura on politically -- i'm a political realist in that i know the gubernatorial election in kentucky this fall will determine when mcconnell should resign from the senate and hopefully david cameron wins the gubernatorial election in november for kentucky and can appoint a replacement for mcconnell. but it would be nice to see a leader in the senate caucus, g.o.p. caucus that is at least not antagonistic towards america first and actually wants to see some of those policy priorities for the base actually advance and hopefully, if we win the white house in 2024, and take the senate back, have somebody that can actually work with an america first president to advance that agenda instead of fighting it every step of the way, as mitch mcconnell did. >> laura: chris, is there a consensus candidate to be the senate minority leader? could there be someone who doesn't offend, at least, the populist core of the party and somewhat palatable? you have to split the baby. not josh hawley or j.d. vance. they are juniors. it cannot be him. would somebody else be possible? >> yes. absolutely. any one of his deputies could step forward at this time and republicans would end up backing them. they know things aren't going to really change. here's the funny thing is that mitch mcconnell was a master of the senate. he truly was. for years it made it seem to his deputies and to his adversaries in the g.o.p. he was necessary to make everything flow and everything work. those couple months that he was absent after his fall at that d.c. hotel, people started to realize, you know, the senate actually works without mitch mcconnell. and the right and the moderates and liberal republicans were able to actually work together on some level. so they know now that they don't actually need mitch mcconnell to go forward and to move forward, but no one is going to take that shot, and once someone does, i think, generally the caucus will eventually come behind them. once mcconnell and his money men are willing to step aside. >> laura: on biden, the question of him, the white house sent the press secretary out to defend his condition yesterday. watch this. >> what this president brings to this administration is wisdom and experience. and that is just true. the thing the president is able to do is deliver. >> you are part of the 23% of adults. >> ha ha ha. >> who are not concerned about the president's ability to be president because of his age and stamina. i got it? >> because because we the got to watch him. watch him. >> laura: is that convincing argument? even jake tapper. >> jake tapper always loves to jump on an issue once its safe. not convincing argue. at all from the white house people can't quite keep up with joe biden. the democrats have turned on this. republicans have turned on this. but at the end of the day, when we have an election, a repeat of an election between joe biden and donald trump, i do think the democrats will absolutely fall in line behind their man. it's not great for the future of actually progressive agenda, et cetera, or america standing in the world. but it is a safe bet for the democrats. >> laura: politico by the way rushed to mcconnell's defense almost immediately, which i found fascinating today. saying that he quickly convened with allies, pointing out that the g.o.p. leader still has unissueiunfinished business moro ukraine and offer to former president donald trump. ned, that really is the rub. is he with the establishment both in the media and in the democrat party on key issues. is he not? that's why they are rushing to his defense. >> oh, absolutely. i would argue, except for some of the supreme court stuff, which by the way, great for him for blocking merrick garland that only worked because donald trump won. great for him doing the nuclear option on scotus for getting us gain of function research, kavanaugh and barrett. i think chris pointed out that mitch was considered an expert in procedural stuff. that wasn't mitch. we saw that with his absence. that was the cloak room staff and the floor staff. mitch is very much expendable. is he not with the base. he has made it clear his priorities with ukraine and other things have nothing to do with where the republican base is right now. you ask who is going to replace probably john thune ohio have to admit in the senate has been disappointing. my dad served with him in the house. if we get john thune from the house, i think he would be palatable to the base. >> laura: do you agree with that, chris, that he would be palatable to the base, john thune of south dakota? >> john thune is inoffensive. even as a senator he is fairly inoffensive. i think what is going to change is what he decides to do with that power. and if republicans, conservative republicans feel like they are boxed out. to that politico headline, that's unsurprising. that is a publication that will do anything for access to power. >> laura: yeah. and the status quo. keep that money flowing. chris and ned, thank you both. coming up my part 2 of the exclusive interview we had with trump co-defendant and former legal adviser john eastman. but, first, continuing the trend of putting the world before american citizens is a biden administration about to give a big assist to probably our biggest military adversary? whampleght are my thoughts about what? >> running for re-election in 2026. >> oh, ha ha -- >> did you hear the question, senator, running for re-election in 2026? >> yes. >> i'm sorry, y'all, we are going to need a minute. senator. somebody else have a question, please speak up? >> laura: no, is he not okay. now, bizarrely, after that disturbing episode, neither of the two questions that followed referenced what just happened. but this was the final question. >> what is your reaction on trump's latest indictment? would you support him as a nominee? >> it's a question about trump. yeah, i'm not going to comment about the presidential race. either on the republican or the democratic side. >> mcconnell spokesperson tried to explain all of this away saying mitch felt momentarily light headed and paused during that press conference. now, that's not what we saw this is a pause. we have real problems here. in both parties. our government is about to begin what are monumentally negotiations over the budget and appropriations. five men are supposed to play a dominant role in those talks. biden is 80 years old. schumer 72, mcconnell 81. and mccarthy, hakeem jeffries both in their 50's. now this means at least two of those five involved in deciding how we spend trillions of our tax dollars, they are no longer capable of working full time. and both sadly show obvious symptoms of both serious and cognitive decline. this is always a tough situation in any family but in this case, with the authority and the power that they have they have no words for their wives and families who keep pushing them out there. wait a second. wait a second. jill is not a dock, to a real one. so she can't diagnose biden's obvious deterioration? >> now i would yield to -- who am i yielding to? >> distinguished guest, the president of the republic of korea. "new york times" columnist and supposed republican bret stephens is just one of many in the orbit pushing some type of u.s. bailout of beijing. chinese tariffs. that would be showing, i love this, american economic magnanimity, regular people you don't get that magnanimity, but china should. you cannot make this up. think of where we are right now with our trade deficit with china. it's a complete nightmare. we have gone from $308 billion. 2.9 billion in 2021. and a staggering 382.3 billion last year i gina raimondo or bret stephens or anyone in the d.c. establishment. actually, i think they would be happier if we had a bigger trade deficit with china. euphoric cheaper stuff that we can buy here, right? of course, this means china will get even richer and be able to buy even more weapons and threaten more people, no more what happens, the answer from the establishment is always the same, we need more engagement with china. is china booming? we should have more engagement with china? we share a responsibility, show that china and the united states can manage their differences and find ways to work together on urgent global issues. the united states stands ready to do just that work with you if that's what your desire. >> laura: economically? let's do ccp level propaganda and encourage americans to invest in china because that's what raimondo was doing with their women executive meeting today. and is china supporting russia and ukraine? of course china is supporting russia in ukraine. that's no big deal. >> we have been very clear about ukraine, as long as it takes. just not going to get ahead of a potential meeting that putin and president xi may have. >> don't get ahead of. that is china committing genocide? come on, people, don't focus on the negative? we had candid open conversations. constructive conversations. i was able to explain u.s. policies and our approach to china what it is not is decoupling or looking to hold back the chinese economy. j they are convinced that no matter what happens, no matter what china does, we must always and forever maintain good relations with china. >> think about decoupling. they would rather have good relations with the ccp than have good relations with a 74 million americans they like the communist chinese party and they do business better than they like the trump voters and all their old traditions. as long as they can get away with it politically the establishment will always prioritize helping the ccp over helping any of new middle america. manufacturing jobs were not a mistake. china's spectacular growth over the years that, wasn't a mistake china's take our technology and tylenol our position all over asia and the rest of the world. that was not a mistake. that was all their policy. four years for donald trump. and if they win in 2024, i promise you it will be their policy again. that's the angle. of course we haven't even really gotten into the fact that raimondo's four-day vacation in beijing was preceded by china at what's called the brics summit. the group of brazil, russia, india, china and the south african alliance that is trying to eclipse america in the g-20. we are pretty much helping them anyway. gordon chang, senior fellow gate stone institute. author of the upcoming book "china is going to war.
