[laughter] that was idea for a show. >> finally happening. congratulations on the book. >> greg: thank you. >> brian: my staff and i have got many, sent nine references to me. >> greg: yes. >> brian: what is wrong with you. why are you obsessed with me? >> greg: i said you should be worried when people aren't obsessed with you. right? there are people at this company i will not make jokes about i can be as obnoxious and it doesn't bother you. we should have our own show. when i get older and slower. >> brian: and you need somebody. right now i need nobody. >> greg: i don't need you, brian. in five years i'm going to need you unless i'm president. >> brian: obsessed with late night television i always have. jack parr, steve allen, johnny carson the best late night talk show ever until i met you. >> greg: thank you. >> brian: what happened to late night that made you come in number one? >> what helped me fox seven or eight years just doing the same thing every night red eye middle of the night. even though i was bad a lot of people didn't see how bad i was. including the executives or i would have been fired. so what happens is, fox was patient. gave me time to grow and just at the perfect moment you had democrat president, woke cul culture. you had tv personalities that were more interested in keeping their job than telling the truth. and so all of late night just became this kind of big mush, the differentiation just came from me doing something that wasn't them. >> brian: right. and put you on the weekend, too. a big hit some red eye. you talked about something that is relatively hysterical. what happened to late night tv. you mentioned it before. tonight show with jimmy fallon funny with donald trump. he never recovered. he normalized the president of the united states. here is the moment that set the groundwork for you to be the king of late night. watch. >> i did not do it to normalize him or to say i believe in his political beliefs or any of that stuff. sorry. i don't want to make anyone angry. i never do. >> right. >> i never will. it was all in the fun of the show. i made a mistake. i'm sorry if i made anyone mad. and looking back, i would could it differently. >> brian: are you nuts? he was funny. >> greg: this was a great moment in television and that apology is one of the saddest things you will hear. fallon is a good guy. nice guy. and he really just wants to have. >> brian: very talented. >> very talented.
