consequential week for his campaign as rivals like vivek ramaswamy preparing in his own way. he posted this video. three hours of solid debate prep this morning. he's getting ready shirtless. i'm guessing that's his back yard tennis court. i don't know many places you can play without a shirt. i'm thinking he's add home. new polling shows iowa first -- the very first contest in the election, voters far from locked in. it's interesting when you get below the top numbers. more than 50% of voters say that they are debatable. wednesday night is a big opportunity for them to watch these candidates, if any of them is changing their mind about who they support. bret baier co-moderating the debate with me is here to kick things off. first, go to bill melugin who is here on the ground in milwaukee as well. hi, bill. >> hi, martha. this debate will be the first time all of these republican candidates are face-to-face with each other on the same stage, meaning they'll all have the chance to attack each other and respond to each other. it appears former president trump is not going to be on the debate stage. he posted on truth social yesterday saying he has such a commanding lead in polling over his rivals that the public already knows who he is and what he did during his presidency. so he says he's not going to debate. he says i will therefore not be doing the debates. he said the debates as in plural. here's what we can expect to see wednesday night. eight republican candidates have qualified to be on that debate stage meeting the rnc requirements of polling, fund-raising and pledge to support the gop nominee. they're excited to get it going. take a listen. >> i'm looking to introduce myself to the country. six months ago many people didn't know who i was. i was polling at 0.0% in march. i'm now in a tie for second. >> once this debate happens this week, it's off to the races. that's when you'll start to see people focus in on different candidates, look at what their options are. we feel really good going into the debate. >> if you look in the last six to nine months, i've been more attacked by anybody else. people know i'm the biggest threat. >> martha, earlier today, nikki haley went off vivek ramaswamy who has been surging in the polls. she criticized his foreign policy saying america would be less safe. they'll have an opportunity to hash this out wednesday night, which i'm sure you and bret are looking forward to help make it happen. back to you. >> martha: good to have you here, bill melugin, in milwaukee as well. let's bring in bret baier, chief political anchor and executive editor and anchor of "special report." here we are. >> here we are. >> martha: you're the go on the front of the building. >> i know the milwaukee bucks. you have vivek and r.f.k. jr. doing the pushups. now the tennis. what is desantis going to do? >> martha: yeah, what can he do? maybe a boxing match? maybe some pickle ball? yeah, we've had pushups, tennis. i think pickle ball is probably the way to go. >> it's possible. >> martha: a lot of discussion about the fact that the former president isn't here. one of the political questions coming up was raised by the "wall street journal" where they said they wondered how voters would respond to the former president's evident presumption that he owns their allegiance. these are the questions that are starting to come up. doesn't look like he doesn't have to work for it? >> that truth social post indicated in the plural that he wasn't going to any debates seemed like. i think you'll have to be on a debate stage at some point. these other candidates have said this is not a coronation. you have to get the vote. inside in iowa, there's a 20-point spread but there's some red flags as you pointed out earlier about people willing or okay with choosing another candidate. listen, what it comes down to wednesday night as we have been talking about is who will be the alternative possibly, if there is an alternative, in the gop primary. >> sandra: let's get some of those numbers, this is the demain register poll. very interesting. came out today. it's got trump at 42%. desantis at 19. so even though there's a large gap, what is evident this is the smaller spread than in other polls. among independents in iowa, trump is 27 and desantis is 19. that's very close. >> there's no doubt about it. how the former president plays this, how he campaigns, what he does, how the legal stuff plays out over the next months is really going to be something. if you look at the possible schedule, january 2 for the first trial, 13 days ahead of the iowa caucuses, that will factor in to all of this. >> martha: we're going to talk to ron desantis. part of that leak came out telling him, you know, you have to do this, hit this point three to five times. i'm sure there's similar memos for every other campaign out there. what is the impact -- does it make it more difficult for him to go to these places since that leaked out? >> listen, you have chris christie on the stage that we saw in new hampshire about senator marco rubio. he is always ready to fight. you know, if he brings up phrases that sound familiar from that memo, i'm sure somebody on stage is going to say something. so it's a little tough in that there were probably good lines in that memo. i don't think he will be using them if i had to guess. >> martha: one last thought on the former president. i was just watching kayleigh mcenany who was his press secretary. she said when you're not in the center position on the stage and this big event happening, two hours that you left this huge opportunity for all of these other people to make their mark, you have to wonder if after all of this he's going to think differently about what he should do going forward. >> i think he's going to be active on truth social. if he's not going to be here, i hope he tunes in. maybe he will weigh-in that night. >> martha: good to see you. we'll be seeing a lot of you the next few days. great to be with you here in milwaukee. >> you, too. >> martha: in moments, how governor, ron desantis, is firing back. his republican rivals after riling some up with this comment about the future of the party. >> if you're not rooted in principal, if you're listless vessels that follow what comes down on the pike, that's not a durable movement. >> martha: the first revelations from two irs whistle-blowers forced the justice department to bring charges against hunter biden, which they had no plan to do until the whistle-blowers took the stage. we'll talk to their team next. >> the take-away doj has made a mess of this hunter biden situation. i fault david weiss. seems like this is happening in a reaction nary posture. he's backtracked only in response to the whistle-blowers. veteran homeowners. prices are going up fast. the grocery store and the gas station alone are taking a big chunk out of our paychecks. fortunately, you've earned the valuable va home loan benefit. the newday100 va loan lets you borrow up to 100% of your home's value, not just 80%. and with home values near record highs, that could mean a lot of money. let newday turn your home's equity into cash. when somebody came forward and told the truth then the prosecutor decided that they would say, yes, this is an ongoing investigation and put it in high gear? >> yeah, martha. the whistle-blowers have been right all along. they've been tested and produced documents. the department of justice hasn't produced any information. now through what the defense has given to the media, actually we're getting a good look in to what was going on between these plea negotiations. the fact that this has never been told before, but apparently clark, chris clark, hunter biden's attorney, went over weiss' head to appeal weiss and he got a meeting at the deputy attorney general's office on april 26 of this year. just one week after my letter to select committees on congress revealed that there was a whistle-blower ready to come forward. all of these facts show weiss is not the person that should be able to give the american public the confidence that this matter is getting looked into tho thoroughly and properly. >> martha: you know, you point out that he went over his head, which just tells me looking at that that he knew that he had leverage. because of who his client was. he knew he could push this system around. all along we've been hearing from the white house it was completely hands off and that nobody was interfering with this investigation. how should we believe that? >> there's no way to know it, no way to believe it. there's no truth, no openness here about what was happening. i would add that what came out, leslie wolf, the chief obstructionist to the agents ininvestigative steps that they wanted to take that would lead to joe biden or other folks, she stopped those things and she's the one that turns out is the architect of the plea that came out. then they took her back even though the plea, she negotiated, they took her off the play and brought new attorneys on, which gave the american public the perception there were new eyes on this. there wasn't. it was her plea. >> martha: what i find remarkable and going to take to gary shapley tomorrow, no one has said they're not telling the truth. once they spoke, that's when everybody started to cover their you know what. because they had to get behind that story. they never said these people are not telling the truth, right? you're seeing parents react. these are not just republican parents. these are parents that are frustrated with the fact that the dignity and safety and privacy of all children and families is not being ensured by the old policies that push parents out of their children's lives. this is exactly what we saw in loudoun county where in fact it became a true ground zero of the parents movement. now we're seeing it in fairfax county and others, this is a parent moment, not a political moment. they will in fact comply with the law and stop thinking that they know more than parents. >> martha: let me ask you about the secure the vote effort in virginia. you also were discussing this with governor kemp working on a similar program for republicans to work on getting the vote in early and mail-in vote. you're trying to change the way people look at this on your side of the aisle, right?
