took the lives of 13 american service members. army staff sergeant -- lance corporal -- corporal -- lance corporal -- [announcing names of fallen service members] success. >> president biden: the extraordinary success of this mission is due to the incredible skill and selfless courage of the united states military. >> today, the families of those service members have called it a failure. they are expressing their anger, their loss, and they are demanding the accountability that they say they have never received. the answers to the questions that they still have, and want answers to from the biden administration. >> when our leaders, including the secretary of defense and our commander in chief, call this evacuation a success, as if there should be celebration -- it's a knife in the heart. speak of the commander in chief chose to use him as a pawn so he could meet his september 11th deadline and get the objects he wanted. >> general austin -- joint chiefs of staff. the withdrawal of our troops. that is nothing short of disgusting and ignorant. >> lives. incorrect reports. unfortunately, there are more. that's just the ones i focused on at this moment. incompetent, carrots, evil. speak of the last two gold star family members you heard from other parents of 31-year-old staff sergeant taylor hoover. their only son. he was on his third deployment in afghanistan. wanted to be a marine since he was six years old before leaving on his last -- dropped a letter to his mom kelly who we just saw their in the event that he was killed. i want you to look for me, not without me, he wrote. kelly says that taylor "saw his sisters and mom in the crowd of afghan families." he could not stand that. he was always ready to help people. movement is life was his motto. you get pushed down, you keep going, and his parents say that's exactly what witnesses saw him do on the day of the attack. he was wounded, tied a tourniquet around his own leg and kept fighting, reaching into his pockets and handing out ammo to his fellow marines as he was dying. taylor's parents, darren hoover, and kelly barnett joined me now, along with congressman darrell isa, who sits on the foreign affairs committee and who orchestrated this hearing and also the hearing that happened earlier on capitol hill. thank you very much. so they could not of been easy for you. always wanted to remember your son and the other 12 u.s. service members who died on that horrible day. thank you for being with us today. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. >> it must've been hard for you. to stand up there today -- but you talked about your son in such a deeply loving way. what you want people to remember about him? >> he was an incredible human being. he loved others more than himself, enough to give his life, which he did. just an incredible person. i just want people to know it's okay to ask questions that i'm asking. that's what i live for, to talk about him. i just want people to know that he was an incredible human being, and that he loved others more than he loved himself. >> no doubt that there are many afghan families who are grateful to him for saving their lives, and many of his brothers and sisters in the service who are grateful to him for the example he set. you talked about it so eloquently today, the impact he had on so many people's lives. he also expressed your anger at the administration. what did you expect them to do? what disappointed you and how they reacted to the situation? or the lack of planning that went into the moment that created this? >> right from the get-go, within a couple of weeks, maybe a month, the door was slammed shut on this investigation. anything coming from the administration was shut down. we have had nothing for the last two years. so, my anger is directed at them, like i said, at the state department, the dod, the administration. i want accountability. i've set up before and i will again: our 4-year-old granddaughter could have used a crayon and piece of paper and come up with a better plan than what was executed by these generals, and ultimately by our commander in chief. it cannot happen again. it must not happen again. >> what do you think motivated that? what you see is a lack of planning that ended up taking your son's life? >> i think that the biden administration wanted their moment. they wanted their photo ops for september 11th. 100% that's what it was. there were other options, other plans presented. the present one of his moment. >> kelly, darren says the door was shut two years ago. tell me about your efforts to get information, and what was the outreach he received after your son was killed? tell me about the days that followed. did you have any interaction with the president? >> i have had zero interaction with the president. that was my choice. i told him i did not want to speak with him. i would like to have words with him now, but i did not speak with him then. as far as outreach, they did their best. there was just a lack of communication. they were not prepared for what happens. as far as outreach, i haven't had any military outreach besides -- the general and the officer that came to visit us to talk to us about the investigation. it offered more questions than any answers, more anger than any answers, more anger than any pipeace that it should have givn us. >> your son and 12 others gave their lives in service for this country, they fought on behalf of the afghan people. i want to go back to this testimony that was given by tyler vargas, who was there that day serving as well. the marine sergeant tyler vargas angers, excuse me, lost his arm and leg at the airport bombing. here's what he had to say when he testified. >> on august 22nd, and improvised explosive device, ied, probe took place on the canal. this was isis or the taliban performing an ied test run. we reported it to our chain of command. 2:00 a.m. august 26 until guys confirm the suicide bomber in the city nearing the gate, described as clean shaven, traveling with an older companion. i asked the intel guys why he was not apprehended sooner since we had a full description. i was told the asset cannot be compromised. >> that is heartbreaking. what's being done to address what happened that day and was in the chain of command that refused to allow them to take action against the suspect? >> if you are asking what's being done, nothing until congress and isa -- i think he's going after them out to try to figure out who did it. >> these are questions that the chairman and committees, now that we are having the ability to do so, since we have been the majority -- have been asking and now compelling from the administration. a lot of what you heard today is new, though. it's the first opportunity for these families to tell some of their specific stories and begin giving us areas where we had additional items for the administration to do, including returning some of the personal items of some of the members and so on. >> i know, mr. hoover, you've talked about the fact that your son's phone was finally returned to you, and that his sim card was taken out, so you likely lost whatever last photos your son took, text messages he may have sent. >> correct. that is correct. i don't know how they can sit there and wipe all of this clean, or take that card out. those are the last remaining emotions he may have had, his last remaining moments that he may have had. those memories are gone unless we can get those back. >> kelly, you testified today that he was disgusted with what was going on, having served three tours in afghanistan, said he has never seen anything like what was happening around him at kabul airport, and there was a lack of respect for the people serving, and he felt they were getting incomplete reports and were being lied to. now his phone is missing his final communications. we thank you so much for your service, your wonderful hero son, taylor, and all those he served with, and we are grateful to you and the sacrifice your family has made as gold star families. thank you very much for speaking with us today, and we will stay on this story, hope to get some answers. congressman, good to have you with us. thank you for the work you've done today to allow these family's stories to be heard. we are grateful to you for that, sir. >> it is our honor. thank you. >> thank you all. thank you all. we will be right back.
