>> yeah, true. i mean, this is exactly the kind of equipment that we need for the fight taking place in the donbas region where the terrain is much more open as opposed to the terrain around kyiv which was essentially small towns and suburbs. but the problem we have is the supply line for the russians is relatively short. russia is close by, crimea is close by. and this is an area that they're most familiar with in ukraine because they have been there since 2014. ukrainians now, because they are becoming more and more dependent, obviously, on united states, nato and other countries' ammunition and weapon systems. they are coming from poland, and that means their supply line is much longer and considerably more challenging even though the russians, surprisingly enough, have not been able to target that and eliminate those lines of communications or supply lines. so yeah, it's much more challenging for the ukrainians, i'm hoping that we are doing everything we can to assist them in getting these supply lines and these munitions quickly to the forces that need them. >> brian: right. >> we may have to take some risks to do that clandestinely or covertly landing some of these supplies closer at night in airfields that don't have lights on and that we can get in and get out. there are risks there. that means that americans are flying in ukrainian airspace. it's something that we can do and we may indeed be doing. >> brian: we know about the battle of mariupol, a small enclave left catty combs of a still millwright now being sealed off they need food, water and armament people protesting and next thing you know they got a push back. if you were running the ukrainian army. would you look to grab mariupol back? >> no. they still don't have the combat power to be able to generate something like that. because the defense of the donbas. that's where the ukrainians are focused and they are doing a pretty good job of it the concern i have about the donbas region because it's terrain so open and we have to rely on fortified positions and not able to hide in buildings and other things like they did around kyiv. here they are able to bring their artillery up and use it they have been pounding these positions for days now. and to include aerial bombardments. my concern is they are going to wear those forces down where ground maneuver forces who are quite inept and still inept to this day will eventually be able to penetrate. they haven't had any major breakthroughs yet. but the grinding down of artillery and aerial bombardments can facilitate that they are all in, brian, on this fight on the donbas. they don't have the come bad power now to be able to take mariupol back. i think what will happen as the russians occupy the city, put a local government in, they have to have troops there to occupy it. partisan resisters will gradually begin to conduct operations against them. and they will do that for as long as there is russians in mariupol if it takes months, if it takes years. that fight is going to continue wherever russians are holding territory in ukraine. >> brian: real quick, general, in the "new york times" today they say senior biden administration officials say the war will grind on but the next four weeks will shape the event actual outcome of russia's war and the long lasting implications and influence of drawing the map of. do you believe these next four weeks matter this much. >> i do think the next four weeks matter an awful lot to ukraine and what happens there certainry the russians intend to establish the land bridge, that they have wanted in 2014, were not able to establish it, to crimea, and that's what this fight is about, shutting off the entire southern coast of ukraine on the russian control. eventually maybe moving on moldova to connect it. the russians if they are successful here will have a choice to make. do they continue to go west or do they go back to kyiv and see if they can take the capital down. but the truth is ukrainians have a real chance here to deny russians the donbas area. we have got to keep these ammunitions and weapons systems coming. >> brian: i hear you. general, thank you so much. always informative. appreciate tnchts good talking to you, brian. have great weekend. >> brian: you too. speaking of the weekend 2 # minutes after the hour. at 8:00 and then again at 11:00 at night on saturday night amongst our guest on "one nation" will be the ambassador of finland, are they going to join nato. michael pillsbury what are the chinese taking from this conflict in russia?
