so sorely tried by the violence of destruction is cruel and senseless war into which was drive a quick somber eastern ukraine. still many ukrainians pack churches throughout the country to combine ancient traditions with the reality of war. griff jenkins is live in kyiv with what's happening there. hi griff. >> hi alicia. good evening we are watching here the situation that is very dire in mariupol the southern seaport city has been besieged for 53 days. it is starting guys to have a bit of an alamo feel to it because you have some 2000 ukrainian forces dug in, bunker it in a steel plant vowing to fight to the very end will russian forces are surrounding them. but ukraine's prime minister says they are refusing russia's surrender or die ultimatum, watch. >> the city has not fallen. there is still our military forces, our soldiers so they will fight. >> if mariupol does fold in the first significant victory for putin after seven failed weeks it would claim the land bridge russian it seeks to the peninsula meanwhile's russian troops gear up for the new offensive in the eastern donbas at region with several strikes mostly far as one of just east of where we are hitting an armor vehicle plant killing at least one person but that is not stopping president zelenskyy from urging president biden to make the visit the uk prime minister boris johnson made last week. >> it is his decision of course and about the safety situation it depends. but i think he is a leader of the united states and that is why he should come here to see. >> and alicia on a more somber note the situation in bucha is very difficult for the families that are devastated there and that preece is trying to console them. we traveled there yesterday was somebody's been pulled out of a mass grave in the yard of a church because the international criminal court is trying to identify war crimes that have happened there. the priest saying these were men, women and children who were shot for no other reason than the fact they were simply ukrainians, alicia. >> just awful. and griff, in terms of hope, i did see a piece you did with kids in an orphanage this weekend. they were talking to you about the future. they were talking about their dreams and hopes that they have and the days to come, tell us about that. >> a well it is very touching and you know orphans, the children are the most innocent among the victims of this war. and yet hearing aid 12, 13 year old boy tell me they have become numb to missile strikes they would not fear them as just a statement in and of itself. the fact they dream still of being an artist here in the capitol, these were 33 children that were rescued from where we entered the and it is getting absolutely pounded right now and the last 24 hours a wave of strikes hitting among other things a school there. we know at least some six people have died there in the last 24 hours. the orphans really are a beacon of hope. they certainly conveyed a message that they can deal with this. they are looking for a brighter future. when i asked when i said what you hope for right now? he said right now i want victory. fully aware of the fight their country has been and for the last 53 days, alicia. >> we are all praying for them. griff thank you so much for bringing us those smiles are they really just stand in stark relief against the horrors that we are seeing their parts of thank you. be well, be safe to you and your crew we pray for all of you think you griff. >> and nicole are going to come to first hearing about those children, talk about dreams of being an artist. really a lesson for us all is in it? >> alicia unite talk off-line about this a bit and faith comes in all shapes and sizes. one of the things it's universally accepted when it comes to faith is that it is an overwhelming belief that when you're dealing with struggles you are not alone. someone is there helping you, guiding you and ultimately if you have that faith you can still smile as cities around you are collapsing. some people do tend to watch these videos, i admit i tend to have the water works when i watch thing is just heart wrenching some people still feel so far away from it guess unicef report is about 150 million orphans worldwide. let's just look in the united states for seconds. about one and seven children in the last year have had, they don't have enough food. every day they have not eaten enough food to appease their hunger. we've had about 120,000 children lose parents to covid-19 throughout this pandemic. the border patrol and counsel have reported about 150,000 unaccompanied minors have actually come into the united states their children across this globe who are displaced, that are hungry. but we are here this time of faith this time of hope we need to come together parts not only a nation best international society to put our children first. the people who suffer the most in time of war and time of hardship are the innocent, the children and the infirm and we as a community should do anything we can to provide that hope and provide them what they need to grow. >> beautifully put. i don't want everyone to take a listen to it franklin graham had to say today during his sermon he did from ukraine. >> in lviv, you crave them for their many people have very little hope for the future. wanted to know what to do? where to go? if we repent and turn from our sins and put our faith and trust in jesus christ, god will forgive our sins and we can have that hope that we will be saved and forgiven and be with god for eternity in heaven. >> and maybe one of the most ultimate signals of hope, could be president zelenskyy talking about how irresolute he is about the defense of his country. but it's also hoping the president will go to visit, what your thoughts on that? >> well, we saw boris johnson last week visit not lviv by the way which is to the west is largely stayed out of the conflict thankfully but went to kyiv the capitol any moment it could be bombed. that was a true chilean moment we remember winston churchill during the blitz of world war ii walking the streets of london to see boris johnson with the president zelenskyy, that symbolically meant a lot it would be nice, yes if the u.s. president did go there. but for security reasons i imagine the initiation simply is not going to allow that to happen. i am with nicole in with you and i'm sure david as well. when you watch that package that griff jenkins did as far as us orphans you see those kids and i see my kids like boy that could be my child. when i sit down for dinner a little bit later i'm going to look at them as i have today a little bit differently and really appreciate how fortunate we are not to be in a place like ukraine where families have been separated thousands have been killed and many more injured russia not abiding by anything resembling rules of engagement in terms of targeting women and children knowing here have to worry about a bomb hitting my house and my children and my wife is safe. you look at it differently now, now that we have a war playing on the 21st century as brutal as this one. >> exactly, david the atrocities we are seeing is the ultimate test of faith here, isn't it? >> it really is. i would also like to point something out that i observe. nicole, i take your point about the waterworks pretty see this, you see the children. but often children are the result of the culture, the parent and the circle around them is they are being raised. i would like think of these as strong children with a hope for the future. just thought only faith alone, but how they are raised. ukraine has been under attack for a long time. the last two months have certainly been the most intense. they have been raised hopefully by parents who have given them a level of strength that will allow them to deal with this. there will be tragedies there will be a lot for these children to deal with but that strength that comes with it goes beyond. i think that is important here that they show us that you can still have dreams, hopes, look for a future. those children will likely fight for their future the way their parents are. >> absolutely, very well put thank you so much. still ahead on the east or of the big sunday show, and update a terrifying showing of the country's largest transit system the new york city mayor is deflecting blame to big tech. that is next. i brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein. those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks! >> because in a nutshell you can say you heard it here first, maybe somebody will set it on fox news eric adams is the obama of new york. he will give are you a cleverly crafted statement that seems to be the truth with a scintilla of potential truth and it won't mean anything for it like you are right about the bill when you look at the 148 atf agents ob hired in one scenario under the bill, it would have been for ghost guns enforcement. other gun grabbing policies by the biden administration on the left it. let's go to the core of this. eric adams is deflecting because he won't take responsibility and he won't take action based on what has worked in new york so far over the decades i have watched new york change from the bad old days to the good what happen, stop question and frisk for the broken windows theory, going and going after low-level crimes. he talks about how there is a lower rate of crime versus a pre-covid, right now especially in the subways but when you are not charging people whether they are turnstile jumpers or otherwise, you're going to have a lower rate on the constant reports. he is effectively lying to the people, deflecting to others who don't have the responsibility as the nypd is a mayoral agency the mayor, the police commissioner, they are the ones in charge and responsible and don't expect anything from the new york city council because they are simply propping up adams failed policies and let's not forget alvin bragg, alvin j bragg who ran on the idea of totally defunding but suppressing, not charging, rewriting his memo -- make day one memo about what they won't do paid they are bolting criminals in new york. >> oh yes, thank you little delay there for a moment. let's show the stats here, shall we? first let's talk about a letter that we have now found as far as will first to the incidents as far as 20213 to 67, 2022 we see that nearly doubled 68% increase. this is the letter we are talking about in our view desperately needed resources will be better invested in a subway, bus, maintenance, service improvements we are urging the mta to divest from this current model of criminalization. it is quite remarkable plus let's also shows this tweet from aoc. she of course is a congresswoman 14th district new york what's put that up. she says a punishing the poor does not create a safer environment but instead it threatens the very foundation of our community it threatens the very foundation of our community? nicole how does that work exactly adding more police being a bad thing and bad for the community? >> i stop trying to interpret aoc's tweets along time ago because a lot of them don't make sense to me. i can tell you when it comes to mayor adams i think a little cheeky the former cop and police reformer who is entire campaign was based on # and getting stuff done has just had his first mass shooting under his watch she's over 100 days in office. what exactly did you do to make new york city safe in this first 100 days? anti- woody has been focusing on masking toddlers, masking preschoolers because of the threat of covid-19. by the way again the are the most least affected by covid-19 and least likely to transmit that virus. but he has put more effort, more meetings, more energy into this instead of what he promised to do and what he promised to do was bring back police reform and said he said you know what? private sector this is ideal we need more censorship. anyone is talk about anything violent needs to be taken off social media. and then what happened there was backlash because a rapper started saying hold on, we talk about and now he came to them again. what is he doing?
