>> martha: those are very tall orders, all of those things. it's a very difficult situation between the united states and russia and our allies of course. the president of russia saying he's open for the possibility that more talks might get each side somewhere. national security correspondent jennifer griffin reporting live from the pentagon. hi, jennifer. >> those three issues that putin mentioned at his first press briefing in a month are nonstarters for nato. tony blinken said that if russia is serious, they should pull back the 130,000 troops. the pentagon press secretary john kirby started speaking at the podium at the pentagon. so far he says there's no announcement on where the 8,500 troops will be going. they have not started moving toward europe yet. most u.s. officials say putin is probably buying time until february 30th when the olympics end. putin said the expansion of nato violates agreemented signed by the organization for security and cooperation in europe in 1999 and 2010. putin is accusing the west of ignoring the principles that the security of one nation should not be strengthened at the expense of others. ironic since he's the one that has placed the 130,000 troops on ukraine's three land borders. putin made this thinly veiled threat about european energy supplies. >> the volume of gas in europe has reduced to about 40% of the physical volume. next year our european partners might face problems. >> russia's neighbors say they feel like they're living next to a volcano. the prime ministers of poland and britain were in kiev today promising more weapons. >> we are also preparing a package of sanctions and other measures to be enacted the moment the first russian crosses further into ukrainian territory. >> ukraine's president signed a decree tuesday expanding the country's army by 100,000 troops and raising army wages. martha? >> martha: thanks, jennifer. let's bring in k.t. mcfarland, former security adviser in the trump administration. good to have you with us today, k.t. vladimir putin, the first time he's spoken out since december 23 in this format. i want to remind everyone that he got a similar question in that december news conference as well. a reporter there said will you guarantee that you will not invade ukraine? here's what he said then. >> was it us that deployed missiles near the border of the united states? no. it's the united states who came with their missiles to the door step of our house. is this an outrageous demand to stop deploying these systems near our house? >> he's very unhappy with nato's posture. he wants to rebuild the soviet union. where does this stand right now? >> he's not saying anything new. he's said this over a decade. his argument is that when the soviet union collapsed, when germany unified, the two sides of germany unified, that he got commitments from the west, from the united states, from nato, from the europeans that they would never enlarge nato, that they would never have missiles or weapons on the russian border. so from his perspective, he says look, i'm just sort of -- i'm the guy who is in the right here. you're the ones in the wrong. where i think it goes from here? i don't think putin wants to invade ukraine. he's too smart for that. that could get messy. the ukrainians will fight. a lot of casualties. his game is very different. i think he wants to use the troops as leverage, he wants to use his oil and dominance over the european economy, use that as leverage and i think his end goal here is he wants a coup in ukraine and a pro russian government that means moscow will control ukraine even though they don't have the russian flag flying over the president's palace. >> martha: i think that's a very astute operation. you've watched this area a long time. there's other ways for him to gain control in ukraine than an open invasion. but he's got everybody's attention. we saw mark milley saying he was very concerned about the formation of these exercises across the border. so now you've got -- we just saw boris johnson is there, the u.k. prime minister, promises of weapons and promises of weapons to ukraine and promises of sanctions against russia. will that change their behavior? >> no. i mean the promises of sanctions -- we sanctioned them a long time. the only this that would make a difference is if we prevented russia from supplying oil and natural gas to europe. that would hurt them. but the european countries don't want that to happen. we can prevent them from being called in swift. the europeans won't let that happen. until the united states figures out how to go to the aid of europe and especially of germany saying look, america, how about buying american shale oil, shall natural gas. we will help you do that. then you have a supply of -- endless supply of cheap, reliable american energy and you won't have to be blackmailed by the russians. >> martha: we've been down that road in the trump administration. we had energy security, something that you been talking about for ten years. it was achieved. now we don't have it anymore, which is a big problem. that's why we have to look for these resources to bolster europe. we'll see where it goes, k.t. good to talk to you. >> thank you. >> martha: breaking right now, a search underway for the suspect that shot and killed a man in one of d.c.'s most upscale neighborhoods about 6:00 p.m. just miles away from the while house where the press secretary said the crime crisis is getting too much coverage. it's overblown. joe concha reports after this. people with moderate to severe psoriasis, are rethinking the choices they make like the splash they create the entrance they make, the surprises they initiate. otezla. it's a choice you can make. otezla is not a cream. it's a pill that treats plaque psoriasis differently. with otezla, 75% clearer skin is achievable. don't use if you're allergic to otezla. it may cause severe diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. otezla is associated with an increased risk of depression. tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or if these feelings develop. some people taking otezla reported weight loss. your doctor should monitor your weight and may stop treatment. upper respiratory tract infection and headache may occur. tell your doctor about your medicines, and if you're pregnant or planning to be. otezla. show more of you. >> if you look at that clip of jen psaki, she's making that argument with a smile on a her face. like she's reminiscing at her time at band camp, this is a serious time in this country. she got defensive in her reaction to jacqui heinrich's question monday. jacqui asked her if that is her own opinion. the numbers are the numbers and the respects are results. that's what matters. murders are at a 25-year high in this country according to the fbi. nothing funny about that. can anyone point to one speech the president has done since he took office more than a year ago where he's been flanked by police officers or after he's met with police unions that he says that blue lives matter, too? i stand with you and against rioters, criminals, anybody that attacks you and i'll give you everything you need in terms of resources, mayors, governors so they can help fight this. i'll push district attorneys to fight the law. he won't do that because he's afraid of the squad wing of the party. aoc called crime hysteria, which mirrors what cnn has been saying about the crime crisis where they say it's exaggerated, to spare people. eight in ten people are deeply concerned about crime and the president is polling at 34% of his handling it. so no laughing matter here. >> martha: brandon, the white house said the president will travel to new york thursday, he's going to meet with mayor eric adams who has been outspoken. a lot of people are glad to hear what he wants to do in terms of changing the bail reform laws and all of that. is this a moment for the president to do what joe just pointed out? >> i think joe said a lot of the things that i think that most people can resonate with. all of them are facts. joe biden needs to go out and be present in some of these communities. people have lost trust in democrats and in the president of the united states in his rhetoric towards law enforcement. when you come out, try to make the statement that police are racist and this country is a raidest country, you're stoking hatred hand stoking division between citizens and police. if your rhetoric is spewed in that manner, you're partially the reason why there's so much conflict. so joe biden, it's a little too late for him. but for him to save face for a certain degree, he needs to meet with law enforcement and mayors to talk about what's going on in our country and how can we make it better as a team a unit and a country. >> martha: would have it been better if president biden came tomorrow for mora's funeral service? would that have been a better time than thursday? >> 100% it would be. the president of the united states should show up. he should be there front row to show respect. the president of the united states is supposed to be the head of the country. he should care about all people no matter what political party or profession. he should be there front row and supporting those law enforcement officers. that will give a presentation that he cares. however, his rhetoric and the results are going to be the ultimate factor on whether or not he's supporting law enforcement in this country. >> martha: seems like it would go a long way if he was at this funeral. he's consoled victims of hurricanes. the president is a great comforter. it's a role that allows you to be a great comforter. imagine what he would do if he was with eric adams at that funeral tomorrow. i saw many police officers turning their backs on bill de blasio. we can turn the page on that. >> big time. as bizarre as it sounds, it would enrage some elements of the far left of the party for standing with police. because remember, there was a defund the police movement back in 2020 -- >> martha: which he's said ten million times that he doesn't believe in that. supports the police. >> but yet many mayors did that including de blasio but the tune of one million. now it's a matter of refunding the police. again, the president has had these opportunities to be the comforter in chief, martha. remember waukesha, wisconsin? that's what the stars were for. they found six million of them, a lot of people are upset. you don't see a lot of media backlash in terms of soaring editorial times in the "new york post." if joe rogan said this, there would be protests in front of abc saying that he had to go if he made comments like that. but whoopi goldberg for now will survive this. >> martha: it's interesting how cancel culture works. weaves its way and hits people and not others. thanks, joe. >> great to see you. take care. >> martha: after questions and confusion and speculation, quarterback tom brady is officially retiring. the 44-year-old writing on social media, i have loved my nfl career. now it's time to take my time to other things. he didn't mention the patriots, which he has said his good-byes to them and there's mow or that in twitter. he thanked the patriot nation and said i'm beyond grateful to the team that he won six of his seven super bowl trophies with. here's jim gray, sports caster that hosted the podcast with tom brady. great to have you here, jim. we knew this day would come. brady fans have loved watching his career all of these years. my first question is this. do you think that in his heart of hearts that he always felt that this would be the last season or did he make this decision just in recent days and moments? >> i think he made up his mind. perhaps it's been building since after the super bowl and perhaps this season and not being able to repeat. he's 44 years old. he's said on the pod cast a couple weeks ago, he said, you know, i need to be the father that my children need to have. i need to be the husband to fulfill the needs that she has. it's just not all about me anymore. they have to fit in to this equation. it's about what my family wants, not necessarily what i want. so gisele is a superstar. she raised the family. she's given up a tremendous career and a lot of the things that she's interested in to raise the kids and support tom. he recognizes that. his kids are young. he doesn't want to see his kids outs of the house having never been with him at least six months of the year and then they're gone while they were growing up. so he's 44 years old. also, martha, it's not fun to be hit by von miller and 300 pound guys every week. they're half his age. >> martha: he works on that flexibility. when i watched that game against the rams, they were down 27-3 and he got that look in his face when he gets when it boils up from the surface like i don't want to lose this game. then you watch his tremendous four quarter, 21 some points. we remember the super bowl against the falcons when he did that in the fourth quarter. i thought here we go. it's going to happen again. he got it to a tie game. it was phenomenal. we didn't know that's what we were watching but that's what we watched, jim. >> we didn't know it. i went to that game in tampa bay. everybody had that feeling with 40 second left, here we go again. the last play that tom brady plays, it's a touchdown handing the ball off to leonard fournett and he scored. so it was a story book career. seven championships. it's long going to be remembered. it will be enshrined forever. it's grounds that nobody will step on again. nobody will ever break that record winning seven super bowls. that is more than any franchise in the history of the nfl has won. he's an incredible person. >> martha: i'm glad i got to watch him play and you have a great relationship and we'll hear more monday with you. thanks so much. great to see you. >> thanks, martha. been great to watch. >> martha: thanks. that's the "the story"ry here, tuesday, february 1. "your world" starts right now. >> we're fighting hard for build back better. there's a lot of provisions in that build that are very important. many of them senator manchin supports like drug pricing. so we're continuing to work on it. >> working americans and their families are being hammered by the worst inflation in 40 years. washington democrats own it. >> inflation raging and now so is the debate over democrats push for more d.c. spending. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell tearing in to attempts
