gillian turner and washington joined today by a correspondent alicia acuna, fox business anchor lauren simonetti, acu foundation senior fellow and former white house jump advisor mercedes schlapp, and in the center virtual seat we have seattle radio host jason rantz. i welcome everyone. dr. fauci is taking what could be considered by some a grinch-like approach to the holidays especially for americans who haven't been vaccinated. take a listen to his latest advice. >> dealing with a serious enough situation right now that if there is an unvaccinated person, i would say i'm very sorry, but not this time, maybe another time when this is all over. >> gillian: at jason, i'm going to come to you first. in the meantime hit the president is knocking his health team's response saying it hasn't been good enough, take a look at this. >> we go to the pharmacy and we hear this over and over again, empty shelves and no test kits, is not a failure? >> president biden: i don't take as a failure, i think you could argue that we should have known a year ago, six months ago, two months ago or a month ago but the answer is, yeah, i wish i had thought about ordering half a billion pills two months ago before covid hit here. >> gillian: it's of the president is still blaming the unpredictability of covid rather than taking any responsibility. watch. >> president biden: how do we get it wrong? nobody saw it coming. nobody in the world, who saw it coming? >> gillian: so if ouchi says, jason, we should exclude people who aren't vaccinated from christmas. what i was going to say a minute ago that by way of a personal anecdote, my family is scaling back the christmases this year because i have an infant daughter, because she's obviously unvaccinated but also zero immune system at her age. that brings me to question i have to ask you, there doesn't seem to be got and set aside for people unlike me who are unvaccinated and have family members who are unvaccinated, who also don't have any particular vulnerable people in their house, why should they exclude unvaccinated people? >> jason: at the end of the day i think we need to have different rules or different guidance and advice for different people in different scenarios but instead, we treat absolutely everyone as if they are the same, that they are in the same position. but they simply are not. if you are someone who is triple vaccinated and you live alone and you are having some friends over who are in similar circumstances for you, there's very little risk. i think we need to start looking at on the promise a way to reset the conversation around covid. all of the data that we have so far suggest that it's basically giving people a cold and while that data could change, we have to be aware and pave it if that happens. why don't we look at this and say this is actually a positive in the context of covid not actually going away. if you are vaccinated and you evade the vaccine there is new information out of oregon that you may have some super immunity from delta which is deadlier. but at the end of the day what's driving me nuts and i think is driving a lot of people crazy is the fact that we are treating a virus that has a 1% death rate, as if it's a 1% survival rate. we have to start updating our guidance. >> gillian: mercedes, the president says we didn't see delta coming and we didn't see omicron coming. fine, no one expects the commander-in-chief to be some medical oracle were soothsayer and predict the future, but what i think americans do expect is that the response is rapid and the guidance is clear. >> mercedes: i was actually surprised that joe biden would have made that comment about not seeing that these variants were going to come through. we know that the scientists have been talking about this for quite some time. the omicron variant hit south africa -- absolutely. and he has apparently the best scientists not only in the country but in the world who are advising him between the cdc, the nih, the hhs and this is what their job is. their job is to forecast, their job is to see what's happening and what are the global trends and to be to respond quickly. the mere fact that this bureaucratic system failed and that joe biden and his team, the president did not anticipate these variants despite the fact that when you look at viruses -- i mean, even the, since person knows that there is going to be different flu strains for example. we know that they are going to mutate, we know that there will be different strains and the mere fact that they did not capture this, but the it administration failed on this and it did not have a plan in place earlier on i think is very telling of this administration and their failures to deliver for the american people considering that joe biden said in his basement campaign that he was going to shut down the virus, which he has failed to do. >> gillian: it's oh lauren, the federal government has preordered an prepaid for 500 million test kits and i think it's a total of 13 million doses of these new to antiviral covid pills. but by all accounts, according to health experts americans would have access to the stuff for weeks not months. >> lauren: and what do you need even before you get prescribed those pills? we need a test. we don't have enough test in this is mind-blowing. not only do we not have a test right now, because people are being responsible and they are trying to make sure as we gather tomorrow for christmas eve that we can be safe with our friends and family. we don't have access to the test but, wait. the president didn't even sign the contract for those half-billion tests that are on order and a virtual website where we can order them. it's not even set up. the whole thing is a mess. we are being responsible, we are getting vaccinated, we are getting boosted and getting tested if we can. you know what happened in australia yesterday? the prime minister scott morrison -- remember this country was locked down completely for like two years. he's like, we are not going to restrict you anymore. lockdowns don't work. just so personal responsibility and have at it, australia. because omicron is really transmissible and there's nothing we can do to stop it. personal responsibility and that's what australia is doing. and i think that changed the tone for how we approach the virus. >> gillian: alecia, what do you think about that? what are the country is that you see the u.s. could best model ourselves after right now? not most of the western european countries that are going back into these lockdowns. >> alicia: i can totally pick up on what lauren is saying with australia because i think we have forgotten somewhere along the way especially with the omicron variant that yes. we have to learn to live with covid, but i think we have forgotten about the living part of it, not just, we have to get tested and we have to have masks and all of that. but with omicron, we have a family member that just tested positive yesterday and the concern is more around, how are we just going to separate this person from everybody else? there isn't a large concern about the living portion, this wasn't to discount anyone who is hospitalized or wes and the pain of people who have lost a loved one. when i'm saying is there are people that are testing positive and they are living and i think we are forgetting that, especially when we hear all the scare tactics and things like this inviting people. that's up to you. if i want to just invite someone, that's up to me. that's not something that i want someone to tell me. maybe i will and maybe i won't but that's a conversation with me and my family. >> gillian: can we do is invite our in-laws and blame that on dr. fauci? we have to take it away for a minute but we will be right back and next we will look at a possible biden-trump rematch. both now that former president and the current president are saying, maybe. ♪ ♪ are rethinking the choices they make like the splash they create the way they exaggerate the surprises they initiate. otezla. it's a choice you can make. otezla is not an injection or a cream it's a pill that treats differently. for psoriasis, 75% clearer skin is achievable, with reduced redness, thickness, and scaliness of plaques. for psoriatic arthritis, otezla is proven to reduce joint swelling, tenderness, and pain. and the otezla prescribing information has no requirement for routine lab monitoring. don't use if you're allergic to otezla. it may cause severe diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. otezla is associated with an increased risk of depression. tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or if these feelings develop. some people taking otezla reported weight loss. your doctor should monitor your weight and may stop treatment. upper respiratory tract infection and headache may occur. tell your doctor about your medicines and if you're pregnant or planning to be. otezla. these are the faces of listerine. the face of millions of germs zapped in seconds. the face of clean. the face of whoa! some are of intensity, others joy. all are of... various: ahhh... listerine. feel the whoa! real cowboys get customized car insurance with liberty mutual, so we only pay for what we need. -hey tex, -wooo. can someone else get a turn? because perception certainly is that he is not as mentally sharp as he would need to be in order to take care of the multiple problems with this administration has caused. >> gillian: at mercedes. listen to this recent "wall street journal" poll. it trump and biden neck and neck. biden has 46%, former president trump has 45%, so, i mean, tell us. what are the odds that president trump is going to run? >> mercedes: that's a million-dollar question and i think actually this is interesting. i wish i did. this is the deal, i think both joe biden and donald trump, the health issue is a real issue for both of them. i mean, president trump is also mentioned that it would really depend if he would get a call from the doctor to say, don't run because of your health. i think this is a very real problem for both candidates. with that being said, if i vesely worked for president trump. he has incredible energy. he is a razor focused and he has obviously built a very strong movement. as we are seeing, we seem joe biden completely crumble in the first year of the presidency. let's remember, it's a first year of the presidency where you have the most political capital and i believe that joe biden has quickly lost that. i don't think he's going to be able to regain his popularity. i do believe that even democrats in his own party are praying and hoping that joe biden doesn't run again. we've even seen members of the liberal media also say the same thing. they are warning people and a warning biden, please don't run again. these are very realistic questions and i think for joe biden to be enticed that donald trump is going to run, i have to tell you. if donald trump runs he will definitely have more energy and be prepared to take on joe biden because joe biden will not be able to pull off a second basement campaign. >> gillian: alecia, if president biden for whatever reason decides he's not going to seek reelection, when should he let his party know so they can produce a new slate of candidates? >> alicia: i think his own party is asking that question as well, jillian. he wants to help his own party out and not be the one to take his party out in 2024. he also needs to be the president until 2024, so it makes it a lot harder for him as unacknowledged lame duck to continue to try to push any policy. right now he's having a hard time. look what just happened with bill back better. two mercedes point, both men are aging and both men are aging differently and that part has become obvious hearing them in interviews. this was something the media was scolding about for bringing up time and again even during the campaign when it came to joe biden. however, i will also say that both men also create discomfort in their own parties when this conversation comes up. because there are people who feel like there are republicans who feel like if they don't feel like former president trump of the best one for them, although he is pulling better than anybody, and we know democrats are struggling right now with the current president in office. so it will be difficult in terms of timeline and i think they are asking themselves that same question. >> gillian: lauren, i want to tap into our financial expertise, house of the economy factor into the president's decision to run and if inflation is so at this decades long high should he get back in? >> lauren: inflation will not subside. most people are saying it's not getting better and told 2023 and it will be really hard. if president biden decides he wants to run again on the economy, is there a possibility of a scaled-down, build back better plan where you get more checks out there? they are popular but they also increase inflation. and so does the omicron variance and the response to it, messing up the supply chain. so the economy is a mess and if taxes go up, add that on top of it. what you have right now is both men positioning for a run and really salivating at the chance of a rematch. but quite frankly, stamina is going to determine how a potential campaign trail is going to look. donald trump is smart and he has backed 85 candidates this year from congress to the state level all the way down to the mayoral level. his positioning for a run and it biden is establishing his record. right?
