president biden leaving the future of his spending plan uncertain. some democrats are looking to change the subject for the president's failing economic agenda. i am sandra smith. it's thursday. i am in new york. welcome back to you, john. >> john: thank you. i am john roberts in washington. a brand new fox business poll show half of americans feel biden's move on the inflation crisis are hurting rather than helping and 2 out of 3 americans say the inflation crisis caused them financial hard ship over the last 6 months. >> sandra: as the chances of passing president biden's spending plans are dwindling. democrats can't get their own colleagues on. the deadline for december 25th would need a christmas miracle. democrats are going back to the plan for a sweep overhaul of our election. >> john: tennessee senator marsha blackburn will join us. first to the white house and peter doocy with the latest from there. >> president biden even with his decades of d.c. experience keeps deferring to nancy pelosi and chuck schumer to lead the way advancing the democratic party's agenda. so far they have not gotten the build back better signed. they will miss the christmas deadline. he said maybe try voting rights first instead. >> [inaudible]. >> the top 2 issues for voters in the new fox business polls. inflation and crime. now 63% of voters are concerned about being able to pay their bills. 5% more than april. just 17% of those polled are saying they are helped by biden's economic policies. economists are arguing about the reasons for a labor shortage but they don't decide elections. voters do. 23% blame the labor shortage on extended government benefits. the republican upset win in virginia gubernatorial's race may have been a warning sign for democrats. this it may be a louder alarm. republicans are leading the ballot 43% to 39%. how does this affect the president's reelection plans in 2024? we are told it doesn't. >> the president has every intention for running for reelection. that's the other message for them. >> donald trump announced on his first day in office his intention to run for reelection. that's something that joe biden still hasn't done. >> john: we will see. he still has time to do it. peter doocy at the white house. >> sandra: tennessee republican senator marsha blackburn. great to see you. thanks for being here. >> sure. >> sandra: spell this out. what is the case that republicans make? if democrats were able to push this through and there was a christmas miracle, what does your party say will happen to the average american family in 2022? what kind of costs? knowing the average american family is on the hook for $3500 for this year because of inflation. >> that's right. sandra, that additional $3500 per family per years if you are treading water. now what it does not take into account is what is going to happen for your childcare costs. this build back better, broke bill, as i call it, it would raise your child care costs $13,000 per child. they want to eliminating churches from providing child care you can use and get a subsidy. they are trying to take over the child care industry. i have not had anybody in tennessee tell me they think child care is broke and that the federal government needs to intervene. they like going to their local church for mother's day out and after-school care. you will see an increase in energy taxes. in tobacco and liquor taxes. it's all baked into this bill because they have to have 10 years of tax receipts to pay for 3 years of different programs. their bill is not a 1.75-trillion dollars bill. it's closer to a 5 trillion dollars bill and it's not paid for. it is going to put an additional at least 3 trillion dollars of debt on the books that our children and grandchildren will have to pay for. >> sandra: yes. dick durbin the democrat from illinois said that's just speculation. as far as the polling on this, the republican party is highlighting the fact this is not polling well with the american people. they are hurting because of inflation. when asked will biden help or hurt the economy? 44% say hurt. help or hurt inflation? 46%. they are seeing that. apparently pivot now. tell me what you believe the fate of the social spending plans are in the new year. it appears they are pivoting to an effort to pass voting rights but the chances are not great there either. what do you see the democratic party doing on the efforts to pivot in the new year? >> yes, they are trying to pivot to their election reform bill. i call them the freedom to cheat bill. it would make it easier to cheat. it would make it harder to clear the rolls of those who are dead and harder to update your rolls. it would make it harder to use voter i.d. and easier to register ineligible voters. it would put taxpayer funded elections on the books. people don't want that. the democrats are gog have a hard time hitting a 60 vote threshold in the senate. the american people are smart. they know what they are paying at the pump and the grocery store. they are saying, no, this is not what we voted for. it's whatnot we want. no, we won't support you in this is. >> sandra: final thoughts in only 5 seconds. do you see the social spending plan dead in the new year? >> they will try to revive them. i don't think they will be successful. thank goodness people are realizing what this is going to do to their pocketbooks in the new year. >> sandra: senator, appreciate you joining us. thank you. all of this as we look ahead into the mid-terms elections. democrats are dealing with a lot of problems. inflation top of the list with the polls. voters are concerned about how much it is costing them. >> john: unless there is a change and i don't see it in the crystal ball, i don't know that joe manchin will ever sign on to this. if he doesn't it's dead. you wonder with all of the anger among the liberal left wing of the democratic party how much longer manchin will remain a democrat. >> sandra: yesterday larry kudlow said of all of the people who got it right, joe manchin was the one who raised the red flag on what this spending would do to inflation and called for a pause. we will have our economic panel debate this coming up. jason furman of the obama years and steve moore. we will hash out where this goes next. they put their political hats on as well. >> john: another harrowing robbery on new york city subways. a 23-year-old model from thailand was left bruised and bloody on a platform after a vicious attack. the whole thing was caught on camera. she said she just feels lucky to be alive. the "new york post" with the headline my subway nightmare. david lee miller with the shocking details. >> she came to new york city for a modelling career but ended up on the front page because she is the victim of a violent cream -- crime that sparked fear and outrage. at 4 a.m. she was coming home from a concert. surveillance video shows her being grabbed from behind and forced to the ground. the assault lasted about 30 seconds. it's too graphic it show everything that happens. the young woman was left bleeding and bruised. her face swollen. police say on the ground the individual touched the victim's private area and fled with her purse. her lawyer says she was traumatized by the attack. >> you have recovered physically considering the situation. there are obvious deep psychological and emotional aspects that have not gotten better. >> the nypd has released video and photos of the alleged attacker who is still being sought. felony assaults this year increased 19% and hate crime against asians are on the rise. next month the city gets a new mayor and police commissioner and both say fighting crime is a top priority. >> john: something has to change. the big apple not what it used to be. dan henninger will come up later in this hour to talk more about the fact that the department of justice on the federal level is going after international crime with renewed vigor and going after parents at school board meetings but is omitting the crime wave that gripped the nation including that horrific crime. >> sandra: whether or not there will be a change in tone and messaging from the democratic party. london breed from san francisco the change in language being used for the spike in crime there. we will see it that happens in other democratic led cities. >> john: she might as well as said oops. >> sandra: more severe storms just days after a storm system killed more than 85 people. the region is still reeling from twisters. the scene in mayfield, kentucky, where president biden touring the destruction yesterday. to help go to this website. fox news donated as a company $1 million to the cause. this is a fantastic effort. an unbelievable coordinated effort they have on the ground trying to help these people who lost everything. >> john: the need is so great. the fox news contribution is going to help a lot. but more is needed. there was so much devastation for so many families. fox news alert: president biden will award the medal of honor for valor to three u.s. soldiers just moments from now. jennifer griffin will look at their stories coming up. >> sandra: the biden administration says booster shots works amid the fast spreading omicron variant. but will we need another booster with new strains? that was during the protests following the killing of george floyd in minneapolis, in may of that year. we all remember those protests. they happened in 200 american cities. including not only protests but violence and looting in cities like new york. over 3 days of the democratic convention, not a single speaker addressed what was going on in the city. the democrats are simply grid locked on the subject of crime in the city. they won't talk about it until forced recently when breed the mayor of san francisco spoke up. that doesn't mean anything will change until the progressive prosecutors charging people change their policies. there is no indication yet that is going to happen. >> john: mentioned london breed the mayor of san francisco. let's play what she said. >> the time that the rein of criminals destroying our city, it's time for it to come to an end. it comes to an end when we take the steps to be more aggressive with law enforcement. more aggressive with the changes in our policies and less tolerant of all of the [bleep] that destroyed our children. >> john: i heard that and i wondered why she didn't just say oops because he was for defunding the police. >> i know. she is changing her tune. what we need to see is the district attorney in san francisco, the progressive prosecutor the day he stands up and repeats those words and follows up on them. that's when san francisco will turn around. the prosecutors like george gascon in los angeles and chisholm in milwaukee are not apollizing for their failure to charge people. kim fox the county prosecutor in chicago in the first 3 years after she was elected in 2016 dropped 25,000 felony charges. what does that message send to the police in l.a., san francisco and chicago? there is no point until they stop doing that. >> john: and larry in philadelphia. great column in the "wall street journal." thanks. >> sandra: president biden will award 3 medal of honor moments from now. earl plumley the 67th living recipient. and two sergeants will be awarded the award postumously. jennifer?
