>> first of all, mr. president, your voice sounds different. are you okay? >> i'm okay. i have a test every day to -- covid test. what i have is a 1 1/2-year-old grandson who had a cold who likes to kiss his pop and he has been kissing me anyway. but it is just a cold. >> on covid policy it seems like the administration is starting to soften some of the language. new op-ed where you talk about covid and we are going to beat this back. are you no longer going to shut it down? >> we have to beat it back before we shut it down. it will take time. in order to beat covid we have to shut it down worldwide. in the united states of america we are doing everything that needs to be done to take care of the american people within our borders. look what has happened? we're starting to make some real progress and we find out there is another strain and the idea that you can build a wall around america to keep any covid from around the world out is not there. besides, that's one of the reasons why i have know we get criticized, i get criticized for not doing more for the world. we've done more for the world in providing vaccines available and help than any other nation, every other nation in the world combined. in addition to that, we've also with regard to india and other countries and we're working around the clock, remember, i suggested we suspend the patents. let everybody be able to have access to this so they can make the vaccine in their own countries. and thirdly, in southern africa, for example, south africa has all the vaccines they need. they don't want anymore vaccines now. one of the things i'm considering is how can we help them deal with the issue of as i said before when the biggest challenge we had at the beginning of this administration in my view was not getting the vaccines produced, although that was not easy. and i've got to give president trump early on went out and tried to -- got -- did the research to try to get the right vaccines. but logistically, logistically getting the vaccines from a container that gets delivered to you, to a hospital, to a state, to a -- and getting it into someone's arms is a very difficult thing and we did it better than anybody in the world but we'll try to help other people. >> given that there are now multiple cases of omicron here in the u.s. are you requiring vaccines for domestic travel or new measures for domestic travel? >> the measures that i announced yesterday are we believe are sufficient to deal with the proper medical precautions to deal with the spread of this new variant. we are doing, as you know, n.i.h. as well as among the manufacturers, a lot of research to see the extent of -- how quickly it spreads, how deadly it is, etc., etc. but we do require for travel, we'll continue to require people to have masks on. masks on. and in public places and so federal buildings. so but i don't at this point -- let me -- i think i know a fair amount about this issue but i'm not a scientist so i continue to rely on the scientists and asking them whether or not we have to move beyond what we did yesterday. right now they are saying no. [reporters shouting] >> what is happening in ukraine? and what are you going to do about it? >> president biden: i have been in constant contact with our allies in europe, the with the ukrainians. the secretary of state and security advisors have been engaged extensively and what i'm doing is putting together what i believe to be -- will be the most comprehensive and meaningful set of initiatives to make it very, very difficult for mr. putin to go ahead and do what people are worried he may do. that's in play right now. [reporters shouting] >> mr. president -- >> harris: the president of the united states there on a couple of points as he acknowledges a poor jobs report and then went into the vaccines and i just want to fact check a couple of things. one, he did give president trump for the first time that i remember, credit for research on the vaccines. but essentially said that former president trump didn't deliver on the logistics. fact, when president trump left office just last january, north of 700,000 people a day were being vaccinated in this country. that's logistically delivering. did we want it to be more at that time through the sciences and the doctors? we were being told yes much more. he promised to do much more. you also heard president biden saying that america is back to work and the jobs recovery is going very strong. look, we see the people, we see all of you. we are actually watching and all personally experiencing truthfully what is happening across this country. people are struggling financially. and in what is perhaps the biggest indicator yet, america needs emergency needership. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus". the u.s. added just 210,000 jobs last month, far below expectations. economists had predicted 550,000 jobs would be added. now businesses across america are bracing for how the omicron variant of covid confirmed in at least five states that we know about, seems to grow every day, will actually affect their industry. again, this is an economic issue. the white house still saying it could take weeks before we know how severe the new variant is. president biden promising vaccine mandates are still the best way to get americans back to work and press secretary jen psaki has not taken the possibility of new lockdowns off the table. our own sean hannity says the president is not on the same page with the rest of america. >> no more lock downs, no mandates, no masks, no lectures, no scold. we're sick of it. joe biden is not a uniter. he does whatever his far left advisors tell him to do. >> harris: steve forbes is chairman and editor in chief of forbes media. always great to have you in focus. so you just heard from the president of the united states. i did some light fact checking there. i will lean on you to tell us what's really happening in this economy, steve. >> well, what you have is an economy that wants to move ahead but there are still artificial barriers there. we know the huge supply chain problem. europe is locking down again but the fact is that lockdowns don't work. we know medically they don't work, economically they are disruptive and healthcare. the administration is waging war against the oil and gas industry. they haven't yet explained why getting a barrel of oil from russia is better for climate change than getting a barrel of oil from america. they want russia to produce more and we to produce less. those kinds of mixed signals are hurting investment in the future. if they would just get out of the way the american people would do it. the amazing thing about the jobs report they have a thing called the household survey. employment numbers there fluctuate widely from month-to-month but take account of small businesses. those job numbers went up 1.1 million. so you have a lot of small businesses ready to go but now you have the vaccine mandate in effect that will hurt episcopal fly critical areas. so the government is the problem, not -- i think people fear what the government is going to do in response to this new variant more than they do the variant itself. >> harris: so that is so interesting the way that you put that because that's the pressure that we feel when we watch the markets on wall street this week. but it is also the pressure we feel when people go to the store and some of the shelves are completely deplete of things they need. the national federation of independent businesses reporting that historically large numbers of small businesses are struggling to increase their workforce. 29% say labor quality was their top problem. 48-year record high, 48% of all business owners reported job openings they could not fill. far exceeding the historical average of 22%. treasury secretary yellen said this about the labor shortages. >> we have a tight labor market. upward pressure on wages which is to some extent good but can also induce further price increases and needs to be watched. >> harris: whenever i hear the administrative officials speaking they never mention human being. break that down. what exactly is she trying to say and how does it jive with what we're feeling. >> units sweet unit. the use bureaucratic jargon, wages are going up but prices are going up faster. supply chain problems. another big thing coming up. the federal reserve has been printing lots and lots of money which is going to break into this economy next year. they are already using gimmicks to hold back 1 1/2 trillion they've created. and yet they still haven't stop the so-called bond buying. slightly reduce it. no they're fanning the flames for future disaster. that's again the government is the problem. and if janet yellen and others would not try to be putting on new taxes and trying to get a global minimum tax on, first on businesses but their ultimate aim is to get it on individuals. those are the kinds of things that hurt the animal spirit. people wanting to get out and do real things. >> harris: the human animal spirit. before i move onto the next thing here. you have brought up now a couple of times the supply chain crisis. that seems to be not just because it's the christmas holiday season. it is where we're focused now. it's everything. diapers, medical products. the president was joking but really santa claus. we can't afford to joke about that. what do you think about his plan? >> well, he doesn't really have a plan. again when government gets out of the way. he talked about the ports in los angeles. los angeles and long beach. one of the problems they wouldn't allow stang of empty containers. trucks couldn't take the containers off. they modified that a little bit. those are the small things that add up to hurting the economy. so again, get those artificial obstacles out of the way and this economy would really recover. but when you have federal reserve stoking up future inflation, you have these government waging wars and making these strange appointments including a banking regulator wants to shut down the banking system and the government take it over. those things hurt. then the global economy. lockdowns again not good. the government is the problem more than -- i fear the government more than the virus right now. >> harris: wow. quickly one sentence answer if you can. what keeps you up at night over this? >> what they are going to do in the name of helping us, washington and others. >> harris: there you go. steve forbes in "focus" on friday. thank you. >> thank you. >> harris: a brand-new poll shows a big block of former president biden supporters now turning against him. and for the second time this week, he had a tall tale. a little story time. this one is brand-new and it is a doozy. plus this. >> they are trying to get out before the kamala stench sinks in too deeply. what you are now seeing is the -- may or pete and kamala will be a bloodbath in a few years. >> harris: reports of rifts continue to surround the white house and the biden administration scrambling to present a united, sunny front. ♪♪♪ veteran homeowners- with home values at
