day. but president biden is actually moving the remarks until wednesday. he was supposed to speak 15 minutes ago to talk about the supply chain issue. the white house said he wanted to spend more time to talk with the ceos. there was some video of a pool spray where the camera is in the room and the president makes comments. the white house believes that is sufficient saying the president will talk about it wednesday. back to the issue at hand. he met with these fortune 500 company ceos to come with a plan to ease the supply chain tensions, some of the companies like best buy, food lion, mattel, this comes as inflation is at a 30-year high. the president received a sampling of reports from brick and mortar stars and online websites. >> we need to talk about how well-prepared are you to have to product you need on your shelves and how you have innovated and hired to overcome these supply chain challenges you have. >> the president met at the white house, ships continue to sit off the california cost waiting to make the deliveries. add that on to a trucker shortage, spells delay for the holidays and a delay in to 2022. black friday sales were up from last year at the height of the pandemic but down 30% from the 2019 level. cyber monday still going on through today. so the numbers clearly not even tallied yesterday. but it will be interested to see the comparison from last year. last year we saw a decent amount of online shopping. now jobless claims are down, economic officials hope the numbers improve. president biden will address the outcome, the strategies from that meeting with ceos. tomorrow he heads to minnesota. charles? >> a lot of intrigue. ceos are trying to ease the supply chain crisis. but less than a month to go before christmas, is it too little too late? i want to bring in bob cusack from the hill with the political fallout from this. bob, i know the visuals are always sort of intriguing. now there's more questions than answers and the clock is ticking. i would appreciated a meeting like this a month ago. >> yeah, this is a big problem for the white house. they're pitching the social spending bill that they have not passed in congress. they're saying that will fix inflation. i think before christmas, certainly we're not going to have any miracles. we'll see inflation going in to the new year and then it's a question of whether this legislation is going to fix things, whether the infrastructure bill, which has monies for the ports, is that going to fix things. voters usually don't have a long memory. if they're not getting their christmas gifts or paying more, they're going to remember in november of 2022. >> there's no way logistically, which the infrastructure bill has gone through will yield anything. we remember the comments from jeff emmalt when they asked about the shovel-ready jobs, they chuckled and said there were no shovel-ready jobs. so everyone knows there can be fixes, but this meeting today, you had the ceo of best buy, the best buy of call mart, etsy, kroger. these are large companies. we just had small business saturday on saturday. those are the companies i'm worried about. the mom and pop shops that don't have the leverage. walmart bought their own container ships. so i'd like to see the white house get more voices in there about how they're really helping main street, particularly small businesses. >> yeah, a lot of democrats are nervous about this. they want -- whether it's in the house or senate to bring legislation to debate it, not what the white house has done, blame the shipping industry. i don't think that will work. people want results. they don't want finger pointing. some people want the white house to appoint a czar for simply chain issues. the white house has done some stuff on executive orders. but clearly what has happened to this point is just not working at least not yet. >> so president biden to your earlier point finds himself between a rock and a hard place. he has to portray america in such dire straits that we need $2 more trillion dollars on top of what we've had that added to the inflation crisis and we get the jobs report friday. that should be good. we saw unemployment claims free fall. so feels like those that saved up the stimulus money have probably run out enough that they're going out, taking the 11 million jobs. how can you have it both ways? saying we're in dire straits that we have 500,000 jobs created last month but still need to spend another $2 trillion. >> it's a good question, charles. as far as what democrats are saying, they'll get some big bill through probably by christmas and then remember, they said this bill is going to solve a lot of the nation's problems. if it doesn't in 2022, you'll see a massive republican wave next fall. that is what a lot of the vulnerable democrats -- and more of them are retiring -- because they're scared of what could be coming in a year. >> feels like the political calculus, people will be addicted to free money and safety nets. even though they're enduring pressures, they think it's better. we were told we would love obamacare and we're going down the same path. >> the stakes are very high for the democratic party but it's a long way before the mid-terms. >> thanks, bob. appreciate it. >> point, click and wait. that could be the theme for cyber monday's shopping bonanza. just in time for the next holiday rush, the new travel restrictions coming in due to the omicron variant. ho-ho no? that's the big question mark. if you are waiting for something and you don't get it, will you still buy it in january or february? if the demand is not there, it's a loss opportunity for everybody. >> you should send me grandkids. but i do think the demand is going to remain. i think we'll probably see an uptick in demand that sees delays coming in to next year. the thing i'm looking at different from you, i much less focused on what consumers and doing. i'm very concerned about manufacturers. that's what i'm looking at. >> so accessory quick. the dallas fed, the manufacturing port for dallas sam solve big improvements but prices another another all-time high. even the prices they're charging customers, 600% above the norm. even if manufacturing is getting your act together, seems like the inflation crisis is not going away. >> sadly not any time soon. after we see the port problems go away, inventories being pumped back up, i think 2022 will be bumpy ride. >> and technology stocks ripped today. you can see the old industrial names. is that a concern for you? the industrial bases? there's some kind of red flag that we should know about? >> listen, i'm of the belief next year that the invest in the market will go to value. value to me is industrials, financials, energy. they're concerned about the bumpy road that we're going to hit once the fed quickens the pace of tapering and talking about interest rate increases. inflation is not doing away. some point they favor a quicker tapering and that leads you to believe that the fed thinks behind the iron curtain, they're much more concerned about inflation than they're letting on. that narrative will change in the new year. i don't think they'll change it before the end of this year. they're going to try to hold the status question. in january and february, you'll see a change in the narrative and that will create the turbulence ahead. >> friday is the jobs report. right now the estimate is 500,000. there was a point that we were promised a million jobs every month that never materialized. you see more normalcy? people will take the jobs and the economy gets back to a play where there's equilibrium. we understand what is going on. 11 million jobs have been begging for a few months. >> yeah, i think we're still going to see a strong jobs report, charles. we saw it last month and recent weeks where i'm mystified by it. we have four million people missing from the work force. i'm not going to look at the short term indicators that the mark is back yet. >> it is a mystery. where did four million workers go. kenny and ann, thanks very much. meanwhile, the new covid travel restrictions are kicking in. is it enough to keep the new variant out? >> hey, charles. even though officials and experts are urging people not to panic, concern is growing. the new omicron variant is being found in many, many countries. the list is growing. u.s. health officials warn i may already be in the united states. the u.s. has restricted travel from south africa and several nations today. dozens of country are following sued. australia is delaying their reopening by two weeks. the president's remarks raised more questions of what may be coming. he urged adults to get the booster as a primary path to stop omicron. but this introduces the point of what does fully vaccinated mean? south africa says they're being punished for reporting the variant immediately. the president says it was the number of cases that caused the move and affirmed more international bans are likely. >> the degree of spread impacts on whether or not there's a need for any travel restriction. but that's not -- i don't anticipate that at this point. >> now, delta and united, the two airlines that have direct flights from the united states to south africa have stated that they don't plan on altering their routes at the moment. i talked to travelers here. the common theme was exhaustion with variant after variant coming. it's hard to tell if americans would accept more restrictions and travel bans as the goal posts keep moving. charles? >> charles: thanks, kelly. so how serious is the threat from this variant? i want to get the record from nyc hospitals, senior director, dr. sarah madden. doctor, it's so interesting that we have these travel restrictions and you have the rest of the world a mixed bag. some people are looking people out. how does the medical community, the scientific community come up with this determination? >> travel bans are a political move. what we're trying to do is ensure that our potentially coming in with covid-19, we're able to screen them, test them, take care of them and looking at the prevention aspect, these travel bans, what they try to accomplish is to slow the spread. it's not that its preventing the feeding of this variant from coming in to the u.s. that is not possible. we have porous borders. so it's a matter of time that the new variant comes up in new york and around the nation. it's buying us some time, a couple days, maybe a few weeks before we have larger scale outbreaks potentially from the new variant. we know so little about it. is it going to -- are people going to be more severely ill with this variant. a lot of questions in the air that we'll get answers in the next couple weeks. >> charles: the south african medical community seemed very frustrated with their actions saying they were forthcoming, they gave us all the information. other nations have withheld that information. very vital to the world. and what they got for it is a restriction that is doing to harm them economically. how much time will be needed because i have read anywhere from a new days to a few weeks before there's a real assessment. right now they're saying that maybe it's more transmissable but certainly the symptoms, the illness has been relatively mild. >> so that's correct. those are some anecdotal reports coming out. again, this is not based on any significant or large amount of data. that's what we're hearing in terms of being more transmissable than delta because of the amount of mutations that it has. we're also seeing in some reports that it's resulting in mild or moderate disease and primary affecting those unvaccinated. so the reports are coming out. until we have more data -- the reason why it takes time, you're looking at this particular variant and testing against those that are investigated, those not vaccinated, the anti-body response. that will take a couple weeks. as you know, the hospitalization and death is a live indicator. if you get infected today, you won't see the cause in another few weeks. that's why it takes time to get the data. >> charles: let me ask you this. i want to bring up new york's governor hochul. she said this would limit nonessential surgeries. take a listen. >> this allows us to have the flexibility, the surging flex strategy. one area that we have power to do this is to limit nonessential -- nonurgent scheduled procedures at hospitals with limited capacity. >> charles: you think this call is a tad too early? >> it's not just because of the new variant but because we're in the time where people are congregating indoors, seeing increased numbers of infection rates because of delta which is the predominant strain. we have seen more people that have gotten together during the holidays and more people may have gotten infected and require hospitalizations and require that hospital level care. so i think it's a move that is being cautious. i think it's one of those moves that i think certainly is welcome anywhere we can ensure that we have good capacity in terms of beds as well as supplies and staffing i think is kind of a good move. >> thanks, doctor. we appreciate it. california seeing a wave of smash and grab robberies over the weekend. what is being done to stop it? another robbery. back to you. >> charles: thanks, williams. now to another story that we're following. jury selection starting in the trial of actor jesse smollett. he accused of lying to police about being attacked in 2019. david lee miller has more. >> actor jesse smollett was silent this morning as he walked in. a jury will decide if he's a victim of a perpetrator of a scam that prosecutors say he hope would raise his public pro fault. he said he was assaulted by two men that shouted racist slurs and yelled "this is maga country" in reference to president trump. he said the attackers placed a noose around his neck. two weeks later, his story crumbled. two men that worked as extras on his tv show told police that they were paid $3,500 by the actor to stage the assault. he denied it was a hoax. >> i'm an advocate. i respect too much the people that i'm now one of those people that have been attacked in any way. you do such a disservice when you lie about things like this. >> additional criminal charges against smollett were dropped after he agreed to perform public service and agreed to $10,000 bond. but following public outrage, a special appointed. the judge today was asking perspective juries very specific questions. he wanted to know if they watched tmz and empire or member of pro choice or defund the police organizations. he said raegs and sexual orientation will be mentioned. it is not known if smollett will take the stand in his own defense. even if he does, people will have a few opportunity to see. the judges ruled the trial cannot be televised. charles? >> charles: let's get the read on the smash and grab and smollett case. chief chicago is a republican and running for governor in michigan. chief, what i find intriguing, this is very organized using apps. i thought it was some sort of a game. nobody knows how to fight it. isn't this a time to bring in something like rico and corrupt organizations act? isn't that what this is? >> we have to leadership. charles, thanks for getting me on the show. we start our segment, i want to offer my prayers out to a retired sergeant that was killed ironically at a location that had a smash and grab in oakland. here's the issues. we can't call this leadership. there's no leadership. this is a systematic failure to decriminalize the crime of theft. now i can tell you with four decades plus of experience, it's predictable. it's escalating into violence. you heard stories where customers have been assaulted and employees have been assaulted. broken windows. we know it was escalate. we have these rogue progressive prosecutors that frankly have no concern for businesses, for our community, the patrons going into these stores. there's no surprise. there's no consequences. the crime will escalate. what i find fascinating, san francisco d.a. is now walking back his position. in 2019, he wanted to end mass incarceration. then you have the governor of california who is now singing a different song. so you can't have it both ways. the democrats are in trouble. they know it. this anti-crime -- they're not anti-crime. >> charles: chief, let me jump in there. let me talk about intelligent people. you said two or three times that we knew the logical outcome of this. same thing with a district attorney that says, you know what? i don't care if we have bail at $1,000 for someone with a rap sheet that goes back ten years. i know someone will get hurt. they acknowledge this kind of stuff. still goes through with it knowing the public is going to be crushed. people have to live in fear of their lives that someone could commit -- be on -- arrested for committing a heinous crime and be out so they can do it again. the public has to wake up to this. they're not going to. >> you know, i have to tell you in recent elections, the public is starting to wake up. people are sick and tired. there's no political accountability for these policy failures. that must change. out here in michigan, talib just launched a program to end three strikes law and fully end prisons in ten years. what do we saw for folks in vulnerable communities that rely on the police and other public services and prosecutors and judges are also public servants? >> he's going to release pure hell on those communities. a minute to go i'm going to read you a quote. you do such disservice when you lie about something like this. that's jussie smollett, the actor. anybody that would lie about this does such a disservice. if he's found guilty, what should be the penalty? >> he should be held accountable. everybody is quick to play the race card or sexual orientation. even the vice president i guess during the campaign trail took a position of there's an escalation of crimes against those because of sexual orientations. i won't reject that, but let's focus on the crime. if this man committed a crime, he needs to be held accountable. bottom line. >> charles: bottom line. thanks, chief. always a pleasure. >> thank you. >> charles: twitter stock down for the year. long-time ceo is out. is that a coincidence? you had wheel street, one of the toughest investors pushing for dorsey to step aside. dorsey was at the helm of two companies at the same time. his other company, square, which he gets most of his wealth from. but he wasn't giving enough of his valuable time. it was just performing facebook and snap. people said focus on one. if you're not going to focus on twitter, move asaid so someone else can. >> charles: listen, i had lunch with him a couple years ago and dinner with him. his a sincere guy who i think he wants to save the world. the day after we had lunch, he's going to a tech conference in haiti. you know -- >> philanthropy. >> charles: yeah. the big talk is that he's going to obviously stick with square, but now he's looking at crypto. >> of course. you're hearing that a lot. he's a crypto evangelist. but nothing really changes. he's been -- some would say he's a soft-handed ceo where he handed over the reins to his executive. i don't think anything changes. but some would say, if you're going to kickoff one of the most influential users, president trump at the time, might have been a strategic mistake. some say trump that kept it relevant. >> some say trump kept the media relevant. [engine humming] [clapping] “we will rock you” by queen ♪ the new gmc sierra with hands-free driving offers the most advanced and luxurious pick-up in its class. ♪ yeah, it rocks. >> charles: congress back in session this weekend the year-end blitz with a limit deadline and no deal insight. fox news correspondent chad pergram has the latest from washington. >> good afternoon, charles one thing that congress must do this week is avoid a government shutdown by early saturday morning. democrats must also raise the debt ceiling later this month. spectacles like these are typical at the end of the year. >> we often have drama and first of all we put off the big things before christmas to get them done but we also have the debt ceiling and shutting down the government and it will compromise but we will get there. >> on government funding democrats could be forced to hold funding at current levels. they are not putting their mark on government spending with a temporary bill. they are essentially running the government under a top spending plan. that is where the g.o.p. hopes to string this out. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell said democrats are to focus on their social spending bill. >> so it goes on and on like this, hodgepodge catalog that is built to satisfy the activists and not the needs of families. >> the secretary of the treasury janet yellen testifies before a senate committee tomorrow. expect questions about the debt ceiling. janet yellen told congress earlier december 17th was the deadline. the senate debate on the social spending bill drifts closer to christmas, charles. >> charles: thank you very much chad democratic senator joe manchin not a fan of the spending bill appear that will force democrats to scale back an independent patrice, so far, senator manchin has held pretty tough and every time it feels like he may bend he comes out of a statement left field may be right field that he's not going to change his mind with social spending, your thoughts? >> absolutely, charles, i think he's been very adamant not just on the size and the scope of the bill but the key provisions that a lot of moderates and a lot of far left progressive's really are nonnegotiable, particularly paid leave as an example. we sell the 12 weeks scaled down to four weeks passed by the house but a no-go on paid leave and he believes something like that, entitlement should not be reconciliation of the partisan process but through negotiation of regular kind of form of congress. i expect him to continue to stand strong, stand firm with green deal initiative and he's been successful to keep it out. it would not surprise me if he is successful again as the bill goes through the senate. >> charles: most political observers think something will go through. president biden has said whatever comes he will sign. should we expect some portion of this bill to become law? >> absolutely, we know holds the pan and the gavel so he will make some determinations, but extraordinary popular items in this bill lowering prescription drug costs and expanding medicare, making sure child care and largely the women of america are helped with some families paying up to 35% of income in child care. all of that would be helped by the build back better plan and joe manchin knows that. he will see it through the senate on his terms, but it will get done and democrats in the next year. -- but you know what charles -- >> charles: go ahead, patrice. >> really? >> inflation, inflation, laura, inflation is not possible with american people. i just saw a poll from -- poured out may be half of americans recognize there is a connection between massive federal spending and inflation and so they will pump $1 million into the economy and not expect inflation to get better? i think americans are really smart. this idea that it's not going to happen. >> i appreciate that. i appreciate that. this is a spending bill over time. this isn't like rescue plan but very different and over time. i'm surprised as a representative of the independent women's forum you are not a fan of helping child care, of helping women. >> i'm a fantastic coast i will just finish her homeless with child tax credit potentially enabling them to do so. this would benefit getting women back into the workforce if they want to and stay home with their kids if they choose to. >> charles: you know, patrice, the problem is this is unlike any, you know, similar plan in the past where you have where you wanted to work but conceivably, get on this and never go to work and never have to go to school. you would simply always be paid to stay-at-home, which for a lot of folks not just anti-american but doing a disservice to your household and your family. >> 10 million children out of poverty?
