too much room to sent the terms of debate. the first nine months he grunted about a dozen interviews. trump did more than 50 in the same time and barack obama or than 100. now, we get to the papers real gripe about biden, he's not set for interviews with the associated press, "new york times", reuters, washington post, "wall street journal" or "usa today", how day-- how dare he. biden doesn't stir things up on his twitter feed and the conventional wisdom is that his aides don't want the boss wandering off script or making mistakes. whether that is true or not his low-key approach , you know what dealing with the press is part of the job. i'm howard kurtz and this is "media buzz". ♪♪ howard: ahead, kyle rittenhouse rips the media's sickening coverage of his trial we will talk to brian kiilmeade about that and abc jonathan karl on his interview with trump about the last year of his presidency. and the media complains about jen psaki says president biden takes more questions than his recent predecessor, just not and press conferences and hear some of the brief exchanges he has had with reporters or not in the last couple of weeks >> us mean that all the time and i give you the same answer. i've been competent since the day i stepped into office. >> nothing. nothing happened. >> build back better, when do you expect it to land on your desk? >> i don't know. it will take a wild to get through the senate, probably after thanksgiving. >> when will you answer our questions? howard: joining us now to analyze the coverage, ben domenech. and mara liasson and both are fox news contributors. do you agree president biden is too insulated from the press and that this surrenders his ability to sell his message? >> absolutely agree, howie. i think one of the things that has hurt the democratic efforts in terms of writing the ship in the poll numbers we have seen to this point is the fact that joe biden seems to be very much awol, the common image people have of him at the moment is walking away from a podium turning his back on reporters and taking no questions and while we don't need to see the level of activity and engagement with the news media that we saw under the last administration, which was combative and nonstop and i think were people out, i think biden is hurting, not just his own poll numbers but those of his party when it comes to making the case to the american people that things are on the right track, that things are coming back. you won't be able to get that with just a brief phone call to al rocher on a thanksgiving day parade. howard: i have been touting this for a long time and i know some people think it's press whining but i see a lot of stories that biden needs to talk more about inflation, and say democrats and media critics, but to be the president is muting his microphone. do you think there's something to the notion that the top people in the white house don't want him out there that much? >> yeah. i think the reason for biden to speak to the press more is not because we want him to talk to us more, but the bully pulpit is a powerful tool and i can tell you there's a lot of democrats that feel it's being underutilized. there's a message that has not gotten out, they feel, about the president's agenda, build back better, infrastructure bill, all these things they say are popular with the public but no one knows they actually happened or that a check they got came courtesy of joe biden so there's a sense that it's underutilized. i don't get the sense they are keeping him under wraps because they are afraid he will make one of his well-known mistakes, he interacts with the press in an informal way as you saw on the tarmac and there's plenty of opportunities for him to make mistakes there also. he's leaving a big tool and used those interactions tend to be brief and i would argue even if he does makes mistakes all presidents make mistakes but it's up all-- small price to pay to get the message out. when he talks to reporters he gives daytime speeches and they are tend to be on the dull side. it's not the president's job to entertain us, but because what breaks through the media static is saying something short or provocative-- or provocative. >> yeah, and i think that is something that's been absent from this white house. you don't have the president using the power that mara just detailed or some of the things they have been able to get accomplish on capitol hill to a stronger degree. i think that many democrats are frustrated by that because they viewed joe biden as being this popular politician who's going to be the vehicle for an agenda that includes a lot of things that were to the old joe biden's left and i think what they want is for him to make a stronger case for that agenda. this isn't just immediate frustration. it's political leaps in the democratic party who feel like it's a missed moment, he missed opportunity and that 11 months into the biden administration, they see these poll numbers on virtually every major issue and they wish he was doing a better job of fighting to make the case for their agenda. howard: and that's the key point, not just media frustration. a classic example friday in nantucket he stopped to take a few questions about the virus variant showing up in a number of african countries and he said well there's a lot we don't know and rather than having a press avail to tout the fact he took this action beginning travel from the african countries, he didn't do that and made limited news. >> made limited news. there's a lot of opportunities that democrats and supporters of heel-- his view he has abandoned it. explaining his policies getting out there to make sure people know what he's done. howard: polls show a lot of people don't know what's in this bill. >> not only don't know what's in the bill, they don't know the things he's already done and given them like $300 a month for child tax credit and stimulus, they don't know that it came courtesy of him. one of biden's promises was to dial down the volume and have a calm or less chaotic presidency and he is accomplish that, but the presidency is a selling position. donald trump sold every day for better or for worse and it didn't always work out to his benefit, but biden has gone to the opposite extreme. howard: and you said earlier then, it were a lot of people out. here's donald trump beating up on fake news the other night with sean hannity. >> have some people in and give them absolutely perfect answer, i would give them the time, everything and they would still write a bad story because that's their genetic makeup. they are the enemy of the people and we could have a country that would be able to heal and get together except the media ferments it. howard: i always felt phrases like enemy of the people went too far, but the media loves to talk about themselves and why do this now as the former president and why pound away to that extent against the press? >> well, one thing i would point out is that when we talk about the media we typically mean the publications you are listing off before, but the most powerful media companies in the world, not just in america, google, facebook and these big tech companies that i think very much have shown they aren't the enemy of the american people. they are the enemy of free thought and free expression in america on those thoughts on their platforms, but setting that aside i think there is something to be said for the point that mara was making about this being a dial down administration. i actually think many people feel this administration presided over more chaos than they expected, that the covid measures would be more effective in shutting down the virus and certainly the scenes from afghanistan, the border have played out as chaotic, but part of the trouble i think that's happening here for democrats and joe biden is that his absence allows that chaos to just exist and give the impression that he's not actually in charge of the country or that he's not actually running things from the white house, not to the degree that i think everyone should want when it comes to the president of the united states and have that confidence that he's in control and this isn't an administration effectively being run by underlings who may not be qualified to do the job. you saw the whole thing play out with secretary pete buttigieg and the supply chain issues, the feeling people have-- that there's no steady hand on the wheel and i think that's one all americans, not just republicans or critics should want to have in any president and commander-in-chief. howard: secretary pete buttigieg is on television more than joe biden and kamala harris combined and he's the transportation secretary. i agree with big tech and trump is a big critic of big tech and has a lawsuit and he still banned from facebook, instagram and twitter. mara, what the media says in response to what we just saw is that trump continues to say things that aren't true about the election, rigged election and so forth and he's not shy about insulting journalists personally, but at least reporters had a chance to challenge him virtually every day and sometimes several times a day and that he would be at the center of those stories. >> look, donald trump's theory of the president was media domination and that's what he felt like if you aren't on tv you are to live i mean that was his case. joe biden has a completely different theory of the case and i think that somewhere in the middle is probably more effective. in terms of the competence though, competence not communication in other words i don't know if talking to the press more would have made off get-- afghanistan less chaotic, but having a strong presence and having an image that you build for yourself as the president by being out there and communicating can help overcome those bombs. howard: when it comes to something like covid, you want to project a sense that you are in charge. no president can be a superhero, but you went to project that image. let me eat a break here brian kiilmeade. president biden says he's running again and much of the press is not convinced. ♪♪ switching wireless carriers is easy with xfinity. just lean on our helpful switch squad to help you save with xfinity mobile. they can help break up with your current carrier for you and transfer your info to your new phone. giving you a fast and easy experience that can save you hundreds a year on your wireless bill. visit your nearest xfinity store and see how the switch squad can help you switch and save. it's the xfinity black friday sales event. learn how to save up to $1000 on select phones by visitng your local xfinity store today. howard: suddenly there's a wave of stories about whether joe biden will run for reelection. the president says he will. jen psaki says he will, but much of the press are skeptical. >> in politics he has to say he's running for reelection whether he wants to or not, democrats are biting their nails, bracing for midterms a year from now i would just say a little perspective is worthwhile here. a lot can happen in three years. >> can you envision an effort to replace him at the top of the ticket? >> not if he wants to run for reelection, no. i think that is what sitting presidents get to make that decision. howard: that is just a flavor of the fact that many in the media are openly talking about whether president biden will run again at the age of 82 when we get to 2024. it's early to talk about this, but is the media skepticism and the political skepticism newsworthy? >> well, the fact that it's absurdly early is itself newsworthy, i mean, i think that many people anticipated we would be having this conversation as a joe biden got older and approached a point where serious decisions needed to be made. i don't think a lot of people thought we would be having these conversations before the end of his first year as president, which itself tells you that a lot of democratic strategists and a lot of experts internally are sounding alarm bells about what they see as being a real risk factor for him running for reelection. now, the talk of kamala harris and secretary pete buttigieg being on a ticket together in 2024, that also strikes me as absurdly early but i think there is unawareness that they will probably have to crowd some potential competitors out of any kind of primary that plays out in a competitive fashion and they are trying, i think, to get ahead of the story before it starts to take on a life of its own in the coalition. howard: mara, i don't think joe biden knows and it will depend on a combination of his political health and medical health, but even if he harbors doubt wouldn't it be political malpractice to say so? >> of course. we had this interesting situation where both parties, the people who are guaranteed to have the nomination, if they won it, joe biden and donald trump, there is doubt about whether they actually will run. joe biden the oldest sitting president. there is obvious reasons to wonder if he wants to run again. same thing with donald trump. does he want to run and lose again, we don't know so that's why this chatter is happening and also because his numbers have dropped. also because he is a vice president who's historically pretty unpopular. howard: she unfairly gets bad press. >> she does. howard: she partially does. she partially can be politically clumsy. >> i always say there is too many hours to fill with stuff to talk about and you got to talk about something and this is a war in the democratic, not just whether or not whether he will run, but people are worried he's the only person that could be donald trump. howard: on that point when we go to the republican side and trump has given every indication he will run and his team put leaked to political and memo showing him ahead of biden in five key states. is the press anymore certain even though donald trump could absolutely easily win the republican nomination that he will do this at the age of 78 >> i don't think there's any certainty there, but i think that is something trump actually enjoys. i think he enjoys being in the conversation, playing the game on will he or won't he and i think that level of enjoyment doesn't exist on the democratic side because they have so many different risk factors involved particularly given how much further left their agenda has turned out to be then i think a lot of people expected under joe biden and whether there's going to be someone potentially in 2024 who comes along and mounts a presidential primary either to biden or kamala harris or the like if they feel like they are unpopular enough they can take them on. that to me will be a really interesting conversation to have a year from now after the midterms when we will be , i think, in a different political landscape. howard: i think it's kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, which is if it biden had not dropped by 15 points since the summer i don't think there would be as much a chatter, but the chatter itself i think reinforces the notion that biden is politically weak and of course there are questions about a guy who will be 82 as we never had a president that old so to wrap this up, mara, you talked about what does this say about political journalists that there is as much air time being filled an election three years away? >> i think it's too bad that sometimes there's more heat than light is great to speculate about stuff like this. there's a lot of other things to cover. howard: but, is it about negotiations with joe manchin over the bill-- >> just not as interesting, not as click worthy as to whether joe biden will run again and whether donald trump will run. >> of course there's a little bit of a bubble here inside the beltway. great conversation. ben domenech, mara liasson, thank you for joining us. ahead, brian kiilmeade on the brian-- kyle rittenhouse case. up next, the new virus variant.
