immunity entirely. the biden administration announced new travel restrictions. this is where we begin our coverage this hour with jacqui heinrich. hi, jacqui. >> hi, gillian. we got a new statement from president biden about the new variant that the world health organization has deemed the omicron variant. there's three key points from the president. he said for vaccinated, the best way to strengthen yourself is to get a booster shot as soon as you're eligible. for those not yet fully vaccinated, he's urging people to get vaccinated today saying this includes children and adults. and then finally he says the news about new variant should make it clearer than ever why this pandemic won't end until we have global vaccinations. he wants intellectual property protections to be waived so the vaccines can be made globally. this is a quick action taken from the white house. this comes after the u.k. and several countries restricted travel from south africa and neighboring nations. dr. fauci said that the u.s. was speaking to south africa to see if the travel restrictions were necessary. they said they examined how quickly the variant is spreading and how it could evade protections from vaccines. we're not told what kind of information they received. but actions indicate the feedback that they got was worthy of taking this step. dr. fauci said there's no indication that the new variant is already in the u.s. listen. >> you know, of course, anything is possible. we don't know that. there's no indication that it is right now. it seemed to have restricted. there were some cases that originated in south africa and went to botswana. people traveled and found out they were infections. there's a lot of travel. >> now, according to reports, the new variant has an unusual constellation of mutations. on the proteins that helps the virus create an entry point, the new variant has ten mutations and that's many more than the dangerous delta variation. some of the mutations are of high concern to them. global markets are reeling from the news. it's threatening to blunt the economic blunt the bounce back the white house is moving towards. the president says as we learn more information, any next steps will be guided by the science and his medical team will update him as more developments come through. >> the president from nan democratic this holiday friday. thanks. and jonathan serrie is tracking the worldwide developments. good afternoon, jonathan. >> reuters is reporting that several hundred people already in the air are facing numerous delays getting tested amidst the concern over the new variant. the european union is recommending that all of the union nations impose travel bans to and from nations where the new variant has been detected. earlier today, britain began imposing a travel ban on flights from half dozen african countries. they're requiring british travelers returning from those countries to quarantine in hotels. take a listen. >> the early indications of the variant is it may be more transmissible than the delta variant and the vaccines that we have may be less effective. >> listen to how he says maybe. a qualified analysis. u.s. health officials say they're working closely with their african counter parts to learn more about the new variant and how dangerous it is. for now, what is driving new surges in cases here in the u.s. is the highly infectious delta variant. as cold weather drives more people indoors, more people are infected and it's easy specially bad in the midwest. the federal government is sending 44 military physicians and respiratory therapists to michigan to treat patients for 30 days. gillian, while hospital officials say they welcome the help, they say it's a drop in the bucket. they'll need more assistance. they're overwhelmed at this point. back to you. >> thanks, jonathan serrie from atlanta. here now is dr. janet. thanks for being here. >> thank you, gillian. >> seems like the new variant center around the possibility that its more contagious nan the delta variant and could be immune to the vaccine. this is what the who put out. they say the variant has a large number of mutations suggesting an increased risk of reinfection with this variant. break that down into common english for us. >> sure. so just like the current delta variant, like the alpha variant, the u.k. variant, can you catch covid and catch another strain? yes, it's possible. as a doctor that works on the front lines, i've taken care of thousands of covid patients, which included all of the variants, the alpha, the delta, the u.k. the bottom line we can get through it if we take the common sense precautions. wear your mask, wash your hands, if you get vaccinated, if you get your booster, it will be effective even the new variant. the concern is could i evade the vaccine? could it evade our anti-bodies, is it lethal or more contagious? that's what we're trying to determine right now. but in the meantime -- >> doctor, i want to -- how long do you think -- i mean, we're not going to hold you to this. if you had to guesstimate, how long to get answers to the questions? >> that's a great question. matter of days. pfizer is working to determine if their vaccine is effective against this new variant. in a matter of days. on top of that, pfizer can modify the vaccine to include against this new variant. we should be working on that now and be prepared to put that out now. that is under way as we speak. just a matter of days until we get that information. >> so there are less than 100 cases confirmed worldwide. they're spread across the world in countries like south africa, botswana, hong kong, belgium, israel. at this point we're tracking cases -- not a high number of cases but there's some decent spread. they're in almost every continent already. is it until a matter of time until we have a case in the u.s.? >> it's quite possible it's already here and we haven't picked it up with the pcr testing. again, if you are vaccinated, you probably likely have a lot of protection against this new variant or if you've had previous infection, then you have that natural immunity that will likely give you protection against the new variant as well. >> what do you think about the travel restrictions? the e.u. i'm possibled travel bans on south africa and the south african region. now the united states is moving to do the same thing. you think that is the right move? >> this is being done out of caution. if you recall, gillian, president trump banned travel from china. that probably saved thousands of lives. this could be doing the sale thing. it's just temporary until we can collect more data and more information on this specific variant. >> so just to recap, sounds like you're saying the best thing americans can do to protect themselves is to continue to do what we've been doing over the pandemic, the usual precautions, the mask wearing, distancing, if you're near somebody that is contaminated and getting boosted. anything else? >> yes, get tested. get your flu shot. i'm seeing an increased number of influenza a as well. >> thanks, dr. nesheiwhat. thank you. how inflation is impacting holiday sales. that's next. >> the deals aren't as drastic as normal. like i feel like online is a lot more lower prices than in person. ♪ ♪ as i observe investors balance risk and reward, i see one element securing portfolios, time after time. gold. your strategic advantage. to be a thriver with metastatic breast cancer means asking for what we want. and need. and we need more time. so, we want kisqali. women are living longer than ever before with kisqali when taken with an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant in postmenopausal women with hr+, her2- metastatic breast cancer. kisqali is a pill that's significantly more effective at delaying disease progression versus an aromatase inhibitor or fulvestrant alone. kisqali can cause lung problems, or an abnormal heartbeat, which can lead to death. it can cause serious skin reactions, liver problems, and low white blood cell counts that may result in severe infections. tell your doctor right away if you have new or worsening symptoms, including breathing problems, cough, chest pain, a change in your heartbeat, dizziness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, tiredness, loss of appetite, abdomen pain, bleeding, bruising, fever, chills or other symptoms of an infection, a severe or worsening rash, are or plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. avoid grapefruit during treatment. ask your doctor about living longer with kisqali. look! oh my god... oh wow. ♪ i want my daughter riley to know about her ancestors and how important it is to know who you are and to know where you came from. doesn't that look like your papa? >> you reported 108 million american shopping. where are the other 20 million? what are they doing? >> exactly. what are they doing? a lot of cyber monday shopping, online stuff. >> maybe you can look into that. thanks so much. >> yes. >> i want to bring in daniel geltrude, an accountant and market analyst. president biden says shortage, smortage. the economy is doing great. the economy is doing well and the exteriors are stocked take a listen. >> the major retailers have confirmed the shelves will be stocked this holiday season. that's good news for the moms and dads worry about whether the christmas gifts will be available. that goes from bicycles to ice skates. >> we can buy everything we want. how much will we have to pay for it? >> i think the president is a little bit misinformed about what is going on this holiday shopping season. i think we're going to see empty shelves. that is coming because simply the supply chain can't support it. the other hand, gillian, you did have people that were probably taking the warnings and starting their shopping earlier. how do we know that? the retailers were showing some pretty heavy revenues last quarter. so it seems like there's a trend. it was probably smart to get out and do your shopping early. i think shoppers, inflation and shortage, on the shelves is going to be a challenge. >> if you haven't done your shopping yet, you heard hillary vaughn's report a moment ago. he spoke to a customer that said i like to come in to the store in person to buy everything i need. that way i don't have to pay for ship ship. also this year, we know about the supply chain issues and how shipping is delayed. is that a smart tactic for everyone to take or no? >> i don't think so. i think that there's going to be a lot of people as time goes on that will be very disappointed unless they just want to get out of the house. when they're in stores to see the things that they want to buy are just not there. so at least online when you are shopping, you can take a look and see if it is in stock and when you're going to be able to get the product. so i really think we're going to see a dramatic shift to people going to online shopping. that's been the trend for a number of years. obviously the pandemic has pushed us further in that direction. >> yeah. all right. daniel, thanks for breaking it down for us. talk to you again soon. >> thank you. >> you bet. >> one of america's closest allies is warning the biden administration against reviving an obama era iran nuclear deal with talks to set to resume next week. i've got congressman michael waltz on tap. he will join me next. stick with us. >> what it tells you very bluntly is they don't have a lot of confidence in the u.s. leadership. i think there's good reason not to have it. there's a concern if you don't have u.s. leadership, then where are you going to go?
