[cheers and applause] right? come on. you see, you see, in the other hollywood, nauseating award shows on their pompous actors who are famous only because they pretend to be heroes on the big screen. tonight, we honor the real heroes. [cheers and applause] in the other hollywood, diva actors, they like to walk the red carpet beard well come at the patriot awards, we walk the red, white, and blue carpet. [cheers and applause] in the other hollywood, fawning reporters asked kale-eating celebrities -- [laughter] who are you wearing this evening? right? well, at the patriot awards, we show them. [applause]e] tonight, we honor ordinary americans who did extraordinary things, which has always been the story of our american republic. we are the united states of america, united -- [applause] amen. united around our flag, our love of freedom, under god. [applause] and guarded by those wearing badges or wearing camouflage, who put their lives on the line to defend us. [cheers and applause]. at fox nation, we understand the essential truths. america is the most exceptional nation in human history. [applause] >> i love you, too. thanks a lot, pete. it's always good to be with you. a hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealize for their courage, their outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. >> and this year's award recipient for heroism is all of them. this summer, during the chaotic scramble to get americans out of afghanistan, before the taliban took over, that might have been a good idea for biden to think about it, one decided -- one man -- one man decided to ask to save our friends and allies from being left behind. >> we are tremendously honored to introduce to you tonight lieutenant colonel scott mann. [applause] y ♪ ♪ >> retired special forces are taking matters into their own hands. >> veterans across the world have now united. there is no one else coming for them but us. >> been the most recognizable and the most effective of these groups. >> we knew who they were. we knew where they were. and they trusted us. we were able to help prevent very highly vetted. individuals in the context of a sea of chaos, of tens of thousands. these folks that were manning the perimeter, that is what they wanted to do, anyway. >> it started with a handful of us who were friends with an afghan commando and special forces sergeant. we came together to help him get out of the country. we ask ourselves, okay, how do we leverage, you know, what we can do? d we knew the country very well, we had operated there for a long time. we build relationships or leverage pre-existing relationships with people we already knew inside the perimeter. >> the heavy lifting, often times the weight of effort, is done by local people who live in those areas, who were able to be at his eyes and ears and guide him and get around to the taliban at the checkpoints. it was a madhouse at the airfield. he has used the word pineapple as a password to gain entry with the guards. we were frantically yelling in the phone, telling him to say "pineapple," and he did, and a few minutes later we got a picture of him on theer other se of the wire, and task force pineapple was born. >> i got on the phone with a couple of green berets and i ask, what do you guys want to do? and it was overwhelming, let's keepnk going. we took the chat room that we were operating in and we renamed it task force pineapple. we kind of set up some basic operating rules. your job is to be the eyes and ears of the afghan families that you areme guiding. you had former green beret who would type in the room, hey, my family is over at abbey gate, it is closed, and this marine would say, all right, my family is at northgate. it just opened. let's get moving. and they got close, they would hold the phone picture of the pineapple. we were ableos to pull hundredsf afghan families through these various parameters in the final days. >> heroism to me means what the afghan partners and their families endured. >> people think the opposite of fear is courage. and it's really not. it'spe love. the love that the afghan people had for freedom, and the love that our veterans have for their afghan partners. i was just so grateful to see our veteran population show us what leadership looks like, and that is who we are as americans. [applause] >> please put your hands together and give a very warm welcome for retired green beret and tonight's heroism recipient, scott mann. [applause] >> congratulations. [applause] [chanting "usa"] >> thank you. i think the only thing i can think to say right now is i am absolutely not a hero, but i got to serve as a whole bunch of them. and this -- [applause] this is for all the men and women i served with over the 20 years in afghanistan. this is for the men and women who went into the breach at kabul international when everything was falling apart. this is for the 13 that didn't come home.an and this is also for our afghan partnersth, who many people dont know, but the commandos, the afghan special forces, they fought for the last round, and they are still over them, many of them. it is forrc the ones who waited through the sewage-filled canals, who endured beatings. >> still being murdered every day, every day. >> this is for them. [applause] >> scott mann is someone who i am proud to call a friend, proud to call a mentor, great american. thanks, scott, for all you do in and out of a uniform. [applause] speaking of friends, and mentors, put your hands together for the one and only sean hannity. [applause] >> thank you. are you all having a good time tonight? [cheers and applause] aren't we lucky to live in a with these amazing heroes, these people that risk their lives. we just saw the chaos at kabul airport, and we know what happened. we know the story. august 26th, 2021, is now known as one of thee deadliest days fr the u.s. military in the last decade in this 20 year war in afghanistan. the previous 18 months, we hadn't lost one single american in afghanistan. isis terrorists we know bombed the u.s. checkpoint at kabul international airport, killing 11 marines, one navy -- if i was obama i would say corpse men, he is an idiot -- core man. one soldier, 18 other u.s. troops were injured in the blast. the fallen heroes range in age from 20 to 31 years old. please join me for a moment, remembering those souls and honoring their sacrifice. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> i want to now ask you if they are in the room tonight, the families of some of the 13 that died that day. i'm going to ask them, i met them, i went over and said hello to them, a number of them, i want you to know that this fox nation family, we love you, we are praying for you, we are brokenhearted over your loss. this should never have happened. and if we can ever help you in any way, this large, extendedy family wants you to know we love you and we pray for you every day. will you please stand so we may honor you? [laughter] >> who gave you this? >> they promised me at the store -- gave me this tuxedo, thanks to him. thanks to all of you for coming. fighting for our freedom never stops the battlefield. the impact, it lasts a lifetime. >> yes, more than 53,000 u.s. troops were injured in the past 20 years of war. and those are just the physical wounds. >> yep, one of those men is retired u.s. army sergeant first class john coody, who was nearly killed during an insider attack in afghanistan, known as a green on blue attack, he lost his leg, shattered his arm. but that does not stop him from wantingac to be back in the fig. >> despite his injuries, sergeant first class goudie, he deployed again on another combag mission to afghanistan. can you imagine? >> no doubt about it, he is this year's modern warrior recipient. >> april 25th, 2012, we were prepping to go out. we had an insider threat. one of the partner forces had turned on us, resulting in multiple casualties. i have a prosthetic humerus, write humorous, missing deltoids, shoulder muscles, biceps, extensive nerve damage in my arm, multiple gunshot wounds, two in and around the body and one to the left leg, resulting in a below the knee amputation. there is a grieving. back after being injured. you think that your life is over. you think you are not going to have the same quality in life. i had to deal with that. sitting in a hospital room by myself, with nothing but your thoughts. you start rationalizing and prioritizing things in your life. you set obtainable goals. when you build goals like that and you can start reading them, it takes away thepr negativity f the healing process. >> sergeant goudie, just a year later, he was ready to deploy again. >> when i came back from walter reed after all the surgeries in 2012, i signed back into work on january of 2013. i think the difficulties of deploying with an injury first starts with your mental outlook, being able to prove to yourself that you can do it, instill the confidence and trust in your teammates that you are an asset, not a liability. i think that was the most difficult. >> john is always the person who is going to tell you, it's going to be okay, we are going to get through this, we can figure it out. he is the most optimistic person in the world. it can be the smallest thing that you and i take for grantedo he keeps pushing. even though it is something that is so easy, that he has to try really hard to do. i watched him in so much pain in the hospital after he got hurt. i never wanted to see him like that, but overcoming that and being able to continue serving his country, i am just beyond proud of him. [applause] >> what a story. let's hear it for our modern warrior, sergeant john goudie. [applause] f >> john, how is it to feel back? >> at first, it was something to prove to myself that i was able to do. [applause] they were -- they were a group of strangers who not only came together to fight back against the hijackers, but they kept the fourth plane from hitting our nation's capital. and one of those strangers, one of those strangers was todd beamer. and he is this year's courage award recipient. ♪ ♪ >> todd and his fellow passengers on flight 93 understood, we are not going back to new jersey. we are guided missile number four. they rushed the cockpit with a food card. they didn't have any weapons. they grabbed what they could. noise, emotion, sounds of the counterattack beginning. [indistinct shouting] and then he was dead. >> you have information on -- >> he is down. >> he is down? where did he land? >> he did not land. >> down? >> yes, close to camp david. >> passengers on this flight may have taken down their plane to save the lives of others on the ground, now being hailed as heroes. >> courage and optimism led the passengers onn flight 93 to rush their murderers to save lives on the ground. some of our greatest moments have been acts of courage for which no one could have prepared. >> todd was a hero in our family for so many reasons. because of the young man that he was. he was a provider for his family. a major blessing was that telephone call that todd had with a wonderful lady named lisa jefferson. he was able to describe the nature of the enemy, talk about their plans, sent his love to his family, note we are probably not going to make it out of this, pray together with lisa jefferson, and then todd's last words, "are you guys ready? let's roll." fico it was -- this really can't be. my comfort, my assurance of todd's faith. >> he was a christian. and i think that is what gives us peace. >> it was a blessing. it was great news for the country that todd and others had a chance to fight back and they did and they won. what i would hope people remember about todd beamer, his legacy -- remember what kind of a man he was, what kind of a dad he was, what kind of a leader he was. he did what needed to be done. >> we have our marching orders. my fellow americans, let's roll. [applause] you got it, brother. >> thank you, pete! oh, come on. thank you! thank you for having me. i don't really go anywhere anymore. i am usually hummed over my ipad banging out a script with two fingers, so to be in a room full of people so obviously decent, who keep fox going -- i'm serious. kind of blowing my mind. doesn't happen to me everyg da. i find that really inspiring, and i really appreciated pete's -- oh, i love you, too. [applause] the people on the stage, all of whom were heroes, i thought, wow, that person is a lot more impressive than i am, and so is that person and that person, then it got to 100% of people, which is fine. yeah, right. [laughter] but i thought to myself, yes, these people have taken greater risks than i have, they are more impressive than i am, but they are still recognizably american in the way that they are impressive. they are not like some person from outer space who arrived here to outshine the rest of us. they are americans raised up ino the culture we are all products of, who are exhibiting essentially american attributes. so what are they? they are humble.e they are not that interested in talking about themselves. they are confident. that is one thing i always notice when i leave washington and new york. people outside the big cities actually have skills. no, i'm serious. i am not being mean. but they can actually do stuff. they can make things. if it breaks, they can potentially fix it. they don't have to necessarily order another one from china overer amazon. they have usable skills. which, by the way, at some point, might come in handy. there is no other place like that. there is no other place where countrymen root for each other so passionately as they do here. americans love to see other americans succeed. your success is my success. you are impressive, and i am thrilled by that. i am not envious. because the fact that you are succeeding says something great about this community that we call the country, the united states. there is something wonderful about that. that is not universal at all. it is uniquelyca ours. so i have to say, having seen this my whole life, sometimes i hear people describe a country that i just don't recognize at all . living in some angry, filthy, crumbling city, that would be my view of america. but even in the angry, filthy, crumbling cities, there are a ton of nice people, so i actually don't recognize the description of the country that i hear so very often, that it is deeply rotten or it is terrible and we need to burn it all down and build back better -- no, we don't, actually. it is already pretty great. ind fact, it is the best expression -- this country is the best expression of human decency in the history of the world. and if you don't believe that is true, tell me what is. i'llue give you my cell phone, call me when you figure it out, and you can't. so it is not even a political question. it is a much more basic one then that. i really divide the group into two groups, people who that obvious, but is it fundamentally great? the people are fundamentally great? of course it is. i live here. i know that. and the people who for some reason, whatever it is, clearly they are mad at their dads, that is always the core problem, can't see that or pretend not to see that, and that is honestly, i think i had i will stop at this -- but this gives me heart and hope. as i sit there banging out my apocalyptic scripts every evening, i can't believe how bad it is! and then i think to myself, actually, this isn't most people. in fact, this is not 85%-95% of people. this is like a super tiny subset of people who went to westland, and that is it. so i just -- i really want to thank you for coming, for celebrating the best our country has even as we remember there are a lot of people like this wandering around our country. a lot of them. and i hope it gives you as much hope as it does me. >> announcer: we will be right back with more patriot awards. c. only from discover. this holiday season, give your family the gift that keeps on... going? our very own energizer bunny! energizer ultimate lithium.
