the white house faces mounting pressure to address the ongoing crisis, which some experts say might last well into next year. house budget committee ranking member jason smith will join us a few minutes from now with his reaction. but we begin tonight with david spunt who is live at the white house. david? >> jon good evening to you. not much more time left in 2021. the clock is ticking, but the supply chain crisis may follow us into the new year. as you mentioned the cargo ships off the coast of california right now have been sitting there in an ocean parking lot as millions of goods are in limbo. new numbers from the labor department show in port prices rose last month after falling in august. the shortage of truck drivers is also a serious problem causing economic harm. >> truckers have been on the front lines of this entire pandemic. they want to be paid well. they want to be respected. we do have an issue with a shortage of truck drivers in this country. >> look at these numbers. the consumer price index climbed 5.4% in september, compared to the prior year matching the highest rate since 2008. food rose 4.6%. electricity 5.2%. >> we're not learning our lessons from the pandemic. we have very serious supply chain issues that go much greater than just making sure we have presents for the holiday season. >> in 2020, then candidate biden during the early days of the pandemic, this was during that food shortage crisis, he blamed donald trump, then president trump for the mess. listen >> it's not a food shortage. it's a lack of leadership. harness the restaurant industry to help get food to those needed and help get millions of laid off workers back to work in the jobs. that's what the chefs do. this is not rocket science. it is leadership. >> president biden also continuing to push his social safety net package originally priced over 3 trillion dollars. independent vermont senator bernie sanders out with an op-ed in a west virginia newspaper making a plea to coal country about climate. the senior senator from west virginia joe manchin known as a moderate. he fired back against that op-ed. he wrote that he is not going to vote for, quote, a reckless expansion of government programs, end quote. jon? >> jon: david spunt live at the white house, david thank you. getting hold of the surge of migrants on the u.s. southern border. the biden administration on friday said it is working with the mexican government to restart the trump era remain in mexico policy by mid november. it comes as the situation at the border gets even worse. just on thursday, it was revealed suspected cartel gunman fired across the border at texas national guard soldiers. rich edson is live at the border in anitas, texas with the latest. rich? >> good evening, jon. and texas law enforcement is telling us that for the first time it appears that those gunmen were aiming at texas national guardsmen. they've seen shots go back across from the mexican side to the u.s. side before, but they are saying now this is the first time they have actually seen them take aim at guardsmen. this is a quote from the facebook page of the texas department of public safety, quote, on thursday, october 14th, just before noon, two shots were f fired across the border from mexico into the county, believed to be aimed at texan national guard personnel. there o injuries. the texas rangers are investigating this incident. also, the biden administration is complying with a court order and will reinstate the trump era remain in mexico policy. that requires migrants claiming asylum to wait out their cases in camps in mexico. the white house cancelled the program calling the conditions in those camps inhumane. though a federal court said the biden administration went about cancelling the program the wrong way. so the department of homeland security likely by mid november will reluctantly revive the policy, officially known as migrant protection protocols or mpp. the department says quote, we are working to do so despite our appeal of the court's order. dhs will also be issuing a memorandum terminating mpp. republicans have been pushing the administration for months to [inaudible] it. >> myself and many of my republican colleagues have been pushing to reinstate the trump poliies that work. the remain in mexico policy works. it is encouraging to see the administration start to go down that route. we have to hold them accountable. i'm not stopping till i see that policy get reinstated. >> just down the road from here, a group of about 100 migrants crossed, where border patrol then processes them. usually if they are traveling as family, they are paroled into the united states with requests later to appear before an immigration court or register at a local immigration office. the tempo has slowed in this region after historically busy summer, but we're still waiting for official numbers here. last month september was the last month of the 2021 fiscal year. it was on pace to be the largest border encounters on the southwest border ever, if that case continued to hold, still waiting for the department of homeland security to release last month's figures to figure out where it stands. already at a 20-year high here. back to you, jon. >> jon: rich edson at the southern border, rich, thank you. 655 people arrested during the week-long climate protests in washington, d.c. those demonstrators urging president biden to stop green lighting new fossil fuel projects and to declare a state of emergency in this country. according to the interior department spokesperson, multiple security personnel were injured in violence with protesters swarming the doors of the building. the demonstration coming just weeks before world leaders meet at the 26 climate conference. as we told you earlier, progressive senator bernie sanders is slamming moderate democrat senator joe manchin over his opposition to president biden's 3.5 trillion dollars spending proposal. sanders writing in an op-ed, quote, in a newspaper in manchin's home state of west virginia, poll after poll shows overwhelming support for this legislation, yet the political problem we face is that in a 50/50 senate we need every democratic senator to vote yes. we now have only 48. two democratic senators remain in opposition, including senator joe manchin. well, manchin responded, quote, millions of jobs are open. supply chains are strained, and unavoidable inflation taxes are draining workers' hard-earned wages as the price of gasoline and groceries continues to climb. senator sanders answer is to throw more money on an already overheated economy, while 52 other senators have grave concerns about this approach. amid the division, congress has yet to pass the spending bill or the 1 trillion dollars infrastructure bill. here with his insight, missouri republican congressman jason smith. he is the ranking member of the house budget committee. so from your post on the budget committee, when you hear senator sanders say that americans overwhelmingly support this 3 1/2 trillion dollars bill, what's your response, congressman? >> i'd like to know what americans that senator bernie sanders is talking to, because when i'm traveling across the state of missouri, they are overwhelmingly opposed to it. in fact, a very liberal news network just this week came out with a poll that said only 25%, only 25% of americans find that they would have benefits from passing the infrastructure bill. in fact, less than half of americans want this passed. it doesn't look very popular. let me tell you, senator joe manchin, he is listening to the folks back home in west virginia. he's hearing them, hearing their opposition, and that's why you're seeing a lot of pushback from senator manchin versus bernie sanders. i mean, senator manchin represents one of the poorest states, one of the poorest states in the country, and this spending bill only hurts working class families. this spending bill only hurts the energy sector. but this spending bill definitely rewards wealthy folks in vermont. >> jon: 3 1/2 trillion dollars, there hasn't even been the ability yet to pass the 1 trillion dollars spending bill, on which there's fair amount of republican support. >> look at this. it is not even 3 1/2 trillion dollars. the bill that passed out of the house budget committee just two weeks ago is actually 4.3 trillion dollars in spending. it's the largest spending bill in the history of the united states to ever be before congress. it is also the largest tax increase in the history of congress, with 2.1 trillion dollars worth of taxes. it adds 2.4 trillion dollars to the national debt. it's an atrocious bill. it only makes every crises that our country is facing even worse, whether it's the border crisis, whether it's the inflation crisis, whether it's the energy crisis. this bill alone will create amnesty to 10 million illegals. >> you mentioned inflation, and i want to point up some figures. just in the last year, they are fairly astounding, gas is up 43.3% from september 2020 to 21. car rentals up 43%. lodging is up almost 20%. the cost of steak up more than 19%. that's just in one year. we've got -- well, more than three years of the biden administration to go, and so far these numbers don't show any sign of relenting. >> you know, after the 2 trillion dollars reckless biden bailout bill that was passed in march, we're seeing inflation fuel the fire. it's absolutely awful. the price of gas in my home state is up 80% since january 20th. the cost to put food on the table, clothes on your backs or gas in your car is higher because of inflation. cbo projects will hit inflation the highest it has hit since 1981, since jimmy carter policies. but guess what? if we pass this 4.3 trillion dollars wasteful spending bill, you talk about it adding fuel to the inflation fire, we ain't seen nothing yet if they get that done. >> jon: president biden says we are going to get it. here's his quote from yesterday -- no, i'm sorry, we have him actually saying this. let me play that for you now. >> we're going to get it done. we're not going to get 3.5 trillion dollars. we'll get less than that, but we're going to get it, and we're going to come back and get the rest. >> jon: we're going to come back and get the rest. what do you say to the president? >> to save america, we have to kill this bill. let me tell you, they are going to try to say that it is only 1 1/2 or 2 trillion dollars bill, but they will keep the same policies. they will use budget gimmicks by changing dates from maybe seven years to two years so that it looks like they're only spending 1 1/2 trillion versus 2 trillion to try to force something through. but guess what? the america people are watching. the more that the american people find out what's in this piece of legislation, it is going to be harder for them to pass. let me tell you, if speaker pelosi had the votes, she would have passed this bill last month. she's simply doesn't have the votes. if she loses four votes in the house of representatives, it can't pass. if they lose one vote in the senate, it can't pass. >> jon: it's going to be an interesting time in washington. congressman jason smith, the house budget committee ranking member, republican from missouri, congressman, thanks. >> thank you, sir, great to be with you. >> jon: good to be with you. well, former president bill clinton will spend another night in the hospital. his spokesperson says he is continuing to make, quote, excellent progress over the last 24 hours, as he recovers from an infection. he was admitted to california's uc irvine medical center on tuesday. the spokesperson says he's expected to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. senior correspondent claudia cowan will have much more on this coming up later in the hour. one deputy constable killed two others wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a bar in houston last night. the deputies were working an extra shift when they responded to a suspected robbery outside the bar. laura ingle is live with the latest. >> hi, jon. well, we are finding out more information about this horrifying ambush that took the life of a new father and put two of his colleagues in the hospital. they are still there, and we're also learning more about the weapon used in this attack, that it was an ar-15 assault rifle. now, the harris county constable precinct four has identified the three officers involved here, deputy ka ream atkins 30 years old died from his gunshot injuries and recently returned to work after coming off paternity leave leaving behind a wife and baby. the deputy was shot in the back and undergoing surgery and in the icu. and a 26-year-old deputy was shot and immobilized in the ambush after rushing to the parking lot to help his fellow deputies when gunshots rang out >> this incident is going to affect them for rest of their lives. i do believe that good always trumps evil. what happened tonight was evil. and now the good is going to sweep in, and i hope for swift justice. >> the three men were working extra security jobs at the bar when this all unfolded. law enforcement detained a person of interest who was found near the scene, but after interviewing him, detectives don't believe he is the shooter. investigators now looking for another suspect, a hispanic male in his early 20s. all of this unfolding hours ahead of the 40th annual national peace officer's memorial service, taking place in washington, d.c. today, to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. president biden speaking earlier today, telling the crowd the toll on this profession these past few years has been too heavy. >> 2020 was the deadliest year for law enforcement on record. today we're here to remember nearly 500 of your brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, sons and daughters. >> houston police leading this investigation now, looking for the suspect and hoping anyone out there with information will come forward with tips they need. jon? >> yeah, you know, from 30,000 feet, it is surprising, just because virginia over the last ten years has really become a pretty reliable democratic state. but when you look at the particulars of the race, it is not that surprising. terry mcauliffe instead of trying to run on his record or trying to run on the policy proposals he wants to get to in a second term decided to try to run a sort of national campaign and try to make it all about donald trump which is kind of a weak hand in the first place. what's interesting about that that's clearly not been working. although his strategy of trying to make it kind of a national race has managed to stick, but it is not about donald trump. it's become about joe biden, and the problem is that all of the problems that we've been talking about, and you have been talking about on the show just today that plaguing the joe biden administration and democrats generally in congress, all that stuff is raining down on mcauliffe and become a real problem for him. >> jon: yeah, so joe biden could campaign for the gubernatorial candidate, could he not? i mean his press secretary is getting hammered for endorsing him basically from the podium, saying she's going to try everything to do she can to get him elected. >> that in and of itself is a shocking thing to hear a press secretary at the white house come out and just sort of blatantly say something like that. they are not even pretending to sort of use that podium for anything other than political purposes which is pretty shocking. you are right. joe biden could come down to virginia to campaign. i think it is interesting -- i don't think he's been down here since back in july. we've had even joe biden has come down to campaign. i will be very interested to see where the mcauliffe -- they've said joe biden will come back down to campaign and obama is supposed to come down and campaign. i will be interested to see if joe biden does come down to campaign because of the problems it sort of raises on the campaign trail for mcauliffe, not to say mcauliffe hasn't made plenty of problems on his own. it was a pretty amazing remarkable thing to hear a candidate running for governor in a debate actually come out and say parents shouldn't be telling schools what to teach their children, especially in the environment, where you have parents are clearly very upset across -- and it is not a democrat or republican or conservative or liberal thing. parents are very concerned about what's going on in schools right now, and for a candidate to come out and say something like that, it is pretty stunning. >> jon: we have that moment where terry mcauliffe said that, and we hear the response, the rebuttal from his opponent. glen youngkin. listen. >> he talks about critical race theory. he talks about having these parent meetings on critical race theory. it really bothers me because it is a racist dog whistle >> he stood up and he said parents do not have a right to be telling schools what will be taught in school. he thinks that government should stand between parents and their children. >> jon: that does seem to be resonating among some voters in virginia, charlie. >> oh, absolutely. i think it has a lot to do with -- and actually i think that probably what we'll see -- you know, the polls already showed that the race is closing and that it is very close, but honestly i would not be surprised at all if republicans don't sweep, you know, next month because exactly of these issues that are so important. again, it is not a democrat or republican issue. it cuts across party lines. it cuts across political persuasions. i think in particular, among independents, this is an issue that's very important to parents, and, you know, glen youngkin has done a very good job of, you know, making the race very much about that, and listening to terry mcauliffe, any democrat in virginia these days talk about racist dog whistles, he really should watch himself because of course let's not forget, you know, crt in and of itself is designed to as a political dog whistle that revolves around race, so he ought to kind of watch himself talking about things like that. >> jon: let's talk about the national situation. joe biden was elected in part because he promised that he would bring competence to the white house. when you look at what's going on with some of these cabinet secretaries, we've got a transportation secretary who is out on two months' paternity leave and cannot seem to be found when we've got this, you know, trucking crisis, supply chain crisis, etc. the attorney general wants to investigate parents who are challenging school boards. you've got a labor secretary who says he can't figure out why there's a labor shortage. the head of the fed who says, you know, people ought to be investigated, you know, if they've got $600 or more in their bank accounts. it just goes on and on. charlie? >> yeah, no, it's really incredible. and then of course on top of all of it, you have joe biden sending what is it 13 of his cabinet officials and high ranking administration officials to glasgow to worry about the environment and to do something about climate change, which, you know, if you look at any sort of polling, and i'm always suspicious about polls, but one thing that is very reliable is when you look at sort of trends, you know, in terms of the things that matter to voters today, in america, it's things like gas prices and the cost of groceries and things like that. it is not what's going on in glasgow about climate change, but the administration is -- i think they clearly don't have any answers, but they're coming out and talking about things like they want to pass this supposedly infrastructure -- infrastructure package in order to lower the price of child care, well, my goodness, if the -- you know, the price of gasoline at the gas station these days is any reflection of what they are going to do with child care prices, you know, no thank you. >> jon: washington times opinion editor charlie hurt. good to have you on, charlie. thank you. >> great to see you, jon. >> jon: straight ahead, an update on bill clinton's condition after the former president was admitted to the hospital for an infection. plus, meteorologist adam klotz is tracking the forecast as the northeast braces for a return to fall weather. adam?
