them well at this point. a few democratic senators, joe manchin of west virginia and kyrsten sinema of arizona. the question then becomes who is more in touch not necessarily with you but america at large? bill maher has begun to ask that question on his show realtime. who is more in touch? could it possibly be that manchin and sinema know more where the mindset of the democratic base is right now? watch. >> two wings of the party there is the aoc, bernie wing. they want both bills. and they are going to hold the one hostage until they get them both. the other more moderate side they are very mad at kyrsten sinema and manchin. the two democrats holding them up. mad at them not progressive enough for getting it they only got elected because they are not progressive because they are moderates. here's my question. does spending more money make you a better person? or a bigger moderate? and maybe these two, sinema and manchin do they might have their thumb more on the pulse of the average democrat in the country? will: here's what is interesting about that question. i think it's illustrated in this bill and also illustrated by the way with this. with the influence of social media. it may be in fact that the average democrat out there isn't as progressive as the direction of the party make no mistake the party is being pulled in direction either on critical race theory, government spending, on the response to the pandemic. it's because of the influence of these very progressive not legislators but influencers. again either through social media or washington, d.c., the democratic party is veering far to the left. the question not only is are they leaving america behind or leaving the average democrat behind? pete: you are right. the darlings in media and darlings in social media don't actually reflect actual voters especially in places like arizona and west virginia. joe manchin came out this woke i have never been a liberal. i'm not a liberal. i represent the people of my state and will, you know, go to the mat for them on that. we mentioned the number of the bill. and i think a lot has been made about 3.5 trillion or not. either way, it is a socialist wish list of things that have very little to do with our economy or reviving it and a lot to do with carve outs for certain constituencies of that democrat base or what they think it is. here is a reminder. carley: look at that first one? pete: free community college for illegal immigrants. carley: naturally? pete: bring in 80 billion more for the irs for tax enforcement. 3 billion for tree equity that is very important. the oak trees feel like they have been too dominant for too long. 2 million for bias training? and 4 billion for distance learning. we could go on and on and on. that's why i think for people who don't agree with the trajectory of this bill 3.5 or 2.5. whatever it ends up being it is a desire to get the electorate hooked on government. cradle to grave. carley: absolutely. pete, you are so right. one of the things that was interesting this week joe manchin when he was talking about what would get him to sign on to the reconciliation bill, he was just talking about numbers. the number is -- it's a big deal because we are talking about a lot of money. it's just a portion of the issue. what's in that number? if we go down to 1.5 trillion. 2 trillion. 1.. is it going to be free community college for illegal immigrants? is it going to be tree equity at this time? is it going to be a child tax credit for everybody, even people who don't need it? and that's the reason this massive overhaul is so important to joe biden because he knows that this is going to be his legacy. because when -- when midterm elections roll around, you know they are going to lose the house. he was a very small window of time to do this. he wants his name in history as somebody who fundamentally changed the country into a progressive direction. pete: polling so poorly on other things. if you are a moderate or whatever that looks like in the democratic national committee democrat party today the further you get to the midterms, they don't want to take that vote. a well-established list that currently includes 10 vaccinations and well established rules and regulations that have been advanced by the legislature for decades to add to that list the vaccination for covid-19. will: i mean, look. i have a lot to say about this. carley: take it away. will: no, honestly, i give many, many minutes to this on the will cain podcast and you can hear all of my thoughts. the most important for you to know is this. that we have the data. we know how many children have suffered from covid-19. it's not science to suggest it should be added to the long list of mandates. we shouldn't be in the business of growing mandates. we should be in the business of reducing mandates in this country. we know fewer children have died from covid than the flu. your children do not have to have a flu vaccine to require them to be in person in school right now. so why would we apply it to covid? pete: yeah, this is emboldened governor who survived a recall. felt like covid was part of what saved him, that authoritarian instinct you are talking about doubling down on it here is the good news for parents in california. these are not yet approved by the fda. this and now we are talking about forcing parents to put something in their child's body that they don't feel comfortable with. and, listen, i got the vaccine. i'm comfortable with it. but that was my choice. and for the governor -- the other thing is, i just cut myself off but the other thing i want to talk about is the fact that a lot of people say well, in order to go to school, children have to get vaccinated against other diseases. those vaccines have been tested and been out there for years. will: fundamentally different. carley: when we talk about mandates there are people like former fda commissionerrer scott gottlieb who says that it could reverse and actually do the opposite of what gavin newsom and democrats want. take a listen. >> can mandates help us achieve higher levels of vaccination and will that make us more impervious to these waves of infection in the answer is yes. but there is tradeoff. i think we need decide how much we are willing to push to get higher levels of vaccination. it's going to turn something that has been political this debate around vaccines to something subjectively political and going to be a tradeoff for that you are going to have people harden their positions around vaccination. vaccination is going to now become a political football and it's going to erode not just willingness to sthep covid vaccine but willness to accept other vaccines. pete: by the way new york state is not far behind. yesterday sonia sotomayor rejected an appeal by new york teachers to not have to be mandated to the covid vaccine. talk to a couple today
