case, however, they say they found what they-- (inaudible) evacuate the area and a motor later, a big burst of flames as rv explodes in a ball of fire and the force of the explosion shattering windows and knocking down trees and causing structural damage to a number of buildings in the area. today, the city of nashville is hailing these six officers as heroes. we're told they ran into danger trying to get people out of harm's way. at least one officer suffering temporary loss of hearing following the large explosion. >> and when they got there. the danger continued to increase and they took swift action and started working in the streets and the neighborhood to clear residents from the area and cleared pedestrians from the area and they put themselves in between good and evil. >> to explosion went off right in front of and damaged at&t's data communications center, causing telecommunications issues and in a statement this morning, at&t says, quote, we have two portable cell sites operating in downtown nashville and with numerous deployed in the area and the region. and tennessee governor bill lee says he's toured the blast site and with president trump. leland: we'll get to that with trump, but how much of downtown is sealed off. there was a curfew starting last night. the debris went about six blocks. how far away are you? >> well, leland, right now, we're about a quarter of a mile away from that blast site. there's a good portion of downtown that's still sealed off. obviously you have federal and local officers up the road trying to investigate this-- (inaudible) in the area blocked off, and of course, that curfew you mentioned goes until 4:30 sunday evening so folks are cautioned away from this area. leland: i imagine a mess for the people that live down there, as well. charles watson on the ground in nashville. back to nashville if we get a press conference in the coming hours. >> joining us now a former fbi agency who took part in the oklahoma city bombing and he authored "how to spot a terrorist before it's too late", thank you for being here. given your expertise, who or what do you feel is the target here? >> well, my concern is the target may have been police. the fact that this was set off on a christmas morning early hours, downtown, where people don't congregate, yet, calls were made to 911 reporting gunshots, police run towards the danger, run towards the gunshot. that may be who the bomber expected to be there when he set off the detonation. >> have you seen anything or heard anything like a warning that plays prior to an explosion, prior to an event? >> in all the investigations i've seen and been involved in, i've never seen a warning before, but that makes me further concerned was law enforcement the target. clearly, this individual took the time to make sure that the public was not going to be injured. it panicked people in the area, and they wanted to flee the area. it's up to police, the heroes of this sorry torques direct people away from the damage that occurred. >> and the police chief there says that-- the folks in downtown nashville now are safe. that there doesn't seem to be a secondary threat that they need to worry about. what about the departments on alert this time. especially since you're talking about the possibility of police being the target. >> i can assure you after this occurred, the departments across the country as well as the federal agencies were heightened alert, and steps were taken to make sure that areas were swept and kept clear, and people looking for anything that might be suspicious. and now they need to focus on the area and determine who was this, why was this done and does he have any connections to anyone else? >> in terms of the materials and forensics done on the ground there and that will be done in the lab, and you hear about the blast debris going about six blocks, what does it tell you about the materials and types of explosives used here? >> well, from what i've seen, it was powerful, yet it doesn't appear to be particularly sophisticated type explosion. it's not uncommon to have debris go for many blocks. oaks bombing we had debris blocks and blocks away. but one of the key pieces here is the vehicle, despite that it's turned down, vin numbers are carved into parts of that, and including the axles. i'm thinking it's recently purchased by the person who committed this or perhaps stolen, but never the list they'll be able to track the history and find out who hospitaled it at the time. >> and we do know from the oklahoma city bombing, those serial numbers comes in an immediate and most important point when we're talking about the source of origins. >> people were concerned why was the fire continuing to burn. specifically fire department and officials know you don't want to apply water because you have all of that evidence and likely dna evidence. and the ert, evidence response team are processing that and it's going to bring answers in the next few days. >> we're hearing that authorities have found some sort of human tissue out there. how difficult is it after an explosion to test that forensically and test who that might be? . the scientists at the laboratory can do amazing jobs. if the person who was behind this tissue was found and had a criminal record and spent time in prison there's a dna data base to identify who that individual is. at the very least it will give them something to work with in the future to ensure proper identification. >> one last question. everything that you've seen and heard from the reporting and your experience, do you feel like this is something that's a group effort. that it could possibly just be one individual out there? what is this telling you? >> this has all the earmarks of a lone wolf offender which can be the most disconcerting to law enforcement. when you have large groups, they can be investigated, leads will pour in from one area or another, but that one person working on their own in the quietness of their home, very difficult to find out before the fact. that he is why they need the public's help in law enforcement to some and prevent these things. >> john, thank you so much, we appreciate your expertise this morning, have a good one. >> you, too. kristin: thanks. leland. leland: president trump says he's receiving updates on the explosion, and mark travelling with him from mar-a-lago. we've heard a lot of things, but not about nashville. >> you're right, president trump hasn't made any on camera comments or even tweeted about nashville. and there are questions about what's going on behind the scenes. the white house put out a statement hours after the blast saying the president was getting updates, regular updates on the situation and offered thoughts and prayers to those injured and working on the case. the president keeping a low profile since arriving here with the first lady and has not taken questions from reporters as he has the last several days, we haven't had him a chance to ask about nashville or whether he plans to sign or veto the 900 billion stimulus package. and he tweeted about it. i simply want to get our great people $2,000 rather than the measley 600 that's now in the bill and also stop the billions of dollars in pork. the president has not said that he would outright veto this stimulus package which is tied to a larger 1.4 trillion spending bill and the president has been complaining too much money has been going to foreign aid as opposed to money being spent at home. we haven't heard from mitch mcconnell, but the president for the second time has accused mcconnell not doing enough to challenge the november election outcome. and we know that lindsey graham has been out here talking to him and graham tweeted that he believes the president is invested in trying to get the additional payments out there. with less than a month to go in office, it will be interesting to see if there's an appetite for this. >> and mark, new definition for working vacation for you and i guess the president as well. >> leland, i tell you what, it's told here, it's 53 degrees here. i know, so sorry-- ments i wonder if the control room has any violin music to start playing for you. we'll work on that for the 1 p.m. hour. stay warm, buddy. >> thank you. ♪ >> meanwhile, millions of struggling americans could see a lapse in expanded unemployment benefits beginning today amid looming uncertainty over coronavirus stimulus bill and asishah hasnie has more. >> 14 million americans are set to lose their federal unemployment benefits to the tune of $300 a week. and it all comes down to this. this week the president demanded changes to that $900 billion bipartisan coronavirus package, saying that he wants to see americans receive $2,000 in direct payments rather than the $600 currently in the bill. now, the package would have extended those unemployment benefits through march, but if the president does not stein sign it, two pandemic programs will expire, the pandemic unemployment assistance and that's affecting 7.3 million workers, and also, the pandemic emergency unemployment compensation affecting 4.6 million workers. of those, 4.6, more than half can still collect extended benefits, but cash strapped states may have to pay half of that, essentially leaving a ton of already struggling americans high and dry. >> i really don't want to be on government money at all, but i don't have any other options as of right now. >> i'm going to take the first job that i get, even if it's something i don't want. even if it's for less money. >> now, even if the president were to sign this bill tonight, which is not expected. it puts the states, with an update to the >> thankfully, yes. it's very interesting, we had the initial report of shots fired, which normally a call of that nature brings a rather heavy law enforcement response to the scene where the call directored directed them. and the other thing was the recording that was playing. and this is one of the things investigators are looking at all evidence, including the recording. it's interesting in the sense that this recording could have been playing games with law enforcement in terms of this could have been a setup for them, it could have been an ambush. it could have put law enforcement on the clock, 15 minutes to save as many lives as they could. we're certainly not dealing with a suspect who had a conscience here, in indications or that he was not trying to impact lives. when you have explosives that has that entire impact that destroy an entire block, conscience couldn't come into play. alicia: what does the timing tell you? christmas day, 6:30 in the morning. there had to be just a general understanding there weren't going to be a lot of people around. does the timing anything tell you anything here? >> the timing alone right now based on where we're at with the investigation does not. what is open is that a lot of information is now coming in as the evidence is being gathered. and each piece of evidence is going to kind of tell their own story and then they'll pull that information together to really tell the overarching story of where this started and how it came to be. but the interesting thing is we don't know if this was the primary location where this device was meant to go off. we know that based on surveillance video that the vehicle entered the location several hours prior to that, but we don't know if this was deliberately set to go off at that location at that time or if it went off ahead of schedule. so luckily, christmas day, and the timing of the explosion, traffic was down about in all of those structures you had innocent public lives, you had people living within their apartments, so there could have been a lot of lives lost if it was not for the heroic action of those law enforcement officers. >> in terms of the investigation we now know that the if ib fbi is leading this investigation. it began in the hands of the police department. how is the coordination happening?
