She’s gone on to break new ground in New Jersey as the state’s first female South Asian mayor, as the first Muslim woman to serve as mayor in the United States, and as a leader and advocate committed to inclusion, diversity initiatives, immigrant detention reform and social justice. In late February, she announced her candidacy to be the successor to Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker in New Jersey Legislative District 16. In Hunterdon County, the 16th District includes both Flemington Borough and Raritan Township, plus Readington Township, Delaware Township and Stockton Borough.
