世贸大厦被撞毁后三小时，小布什就宣布美国进入战争状态。之后的事我们都知道了，美国人要求塔利班交出本·拉登，塔利班说拉登是我们的朋友。美国不再废话，10月7日，波斯湾军事基地的战机飞临目的地，“战斧”导弹也已发射，将阿富汗境内所有目标都轰炸了一遍，同时扶持塔利班的劲敌“北方联盟”参与战争，另外警告巴基斯坦靠边站，否则吃不了兜着走。
 
 
 
 
他扶持的阿富汗中央政权软弱无力，政令出不了喀布尔，所以被人讥讽为“喀布尔中央政府”，腐败丛生，效率低下，连第一任总统卡尔扎伊也涉嫌洗钱、索取不正当利益，而他的一位兄弟，甚至涉嫌贩毒。
 
苏联战败后，众多反抗组织，包括后来的塔利班，为了筹集资金，鼓励治下农民大量种植罂粟，结果导致自90年代初期开始，阿富汗的鸦片产量剧增，1991年超过金三角，一举成为全球鸦片产量最高的地区，占全球份额50%以上。因为产量过大，导致鸦片价格下跌，2001年，塔利班曾短暂禁过毒，但此后阿富汗境内的鸦片和海洛因产量有增无减，2007年达到历史最高值8200吨，占世界总产量93%，直到今天，阿富汗还是全球鸦片产量最高的地区。
