Detroit-Shoreway apartment project approved after deal reached to demolish former Mexican-American club

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland board gave its blessing to raze the former Detroit-Shoreway home to a Mexican-American social club so apartments can be built in its place, after developers struck a deal with Latino advocates who wanted to save the building.
The Cleveland Landmarks Commission on Thursday approved the demolition of the Club Azteca building in the 5600 block of Detroit Avenue. It also signed off on tearing down the neighboring Vietnam Market grocery store and barber shop and approved a certificate of appropriateness for the “Waverly & Oak” development to be put in their place. The votes were unanimous, though Chairwoman Julie Trott and Commissioner Michele Anderson expressed concerns about the height of the proposed 87-feet structure.
