In 2017, the newly and i quit a Vice President mike pence spoke our National Conservative student conference and lasher we helped launch the very first marlon bundo book, the firstborn in the series at a virginia headquarters office. Marlon bundo did make an appearance at that event. Said to report he did not make a crosscountry trip to be with us today. And then just earlier this month, the pences were kind enough to host the a group of g immersive Foundation Friends and supporters at the home of the naval observatory. In his farewell address to the nation Ronald Reagan warned us that hes concerned about the eradication of the american memory and the erosion of the american spirit. He encouraged us to quote start with some basics, more attention to American History and a greater emphasis on civic rituals. So thats what we going to do today. Kits, isnt it wonderful that we can come here like this . We have touched a were so in our country with freedom. We can go to school. We can get together at the Reagan Ranch Center. We can say but we think, we can go to church and worship god. When they when you grew up you can pursue any job that you want to. It doesnt matter what you look like or where you come from or who you know. As americans we all have the same freedom. Many, many people in the world dont have these freedoms, so we really fortunate that this is a really special thing. And because of this and most of the adults in the room know this already, for the kids joining us today, there are few things we do every time we get together at the Reagan Ranch Center. The first thing we do is say a prayer. We know all good things come from god, so we like to begin by thanking and asking gods blessing of time to together ps of to do that id like to invite margaret niehaus to the stage here. She and husband bob a wonderful supporters of the foundation and their sponsors of this event. They have two children and five grandchildren. She is an interdesigner and and free time she enjoys playing tennis and doing family shields. She can trace of families history although it back to the mayflower. She also loves reading books to learn more about our great nation and is passionate about passing on the founding ideals of a country to the younger generation. Welcome her up to the stage. [applause] thank you. If you could bow your head in prayer. Gracious heavenly father, we ask you for your blessing on us as we gather here today to celebrate your precious gifts. The gifts of storytelling, poetry and art. We thank you for bringing mrs. Pence and charlotte and officer today safely. We thank you also for gifts of courage, patience, wisdom, forbearance, and a call to service with which you so abundantly granted to the entire pence family. Please continue to inspire mrs. Pence and charlotte to share with children of all ages the wonders of america and its capital city as through the eyes of a very special bunny. In jesus name we pray. Amen. Thank you. The second thing we do at the start of every program is say the pledge of allegiance. How many of you know all the words . Look at that. That is wonderful. [applause] its a way to remind ourselves and each other of the freedom we talked about earlier and what it means for us to all the americans. We also see pledge and we stand up to honor the men and women who fought and died to protect our nation. So going to learn more about the pledge in just a few minutes. Two leaders in the pledge i like to invite two special ladies to the stage. Many of you know caroline who was a student at the university of virginia and a valued colleague here at the Reagan Ranch Center for sixers. She serves as director of the government for providence and shes a mother to virginia and rush, and joining caroline is her daughter virginia who is a preschool student at providence and already attended multiple event at the Reagan Ranch Center. Virginia is a big fan of Ronald Reagan, just like the president one of her favorite food is macaroni and cheese. [laughing] so come on out. [applause] i pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america, and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Virginia is a big fan of ronald thank you ladies. Now it is my pleasure to introduce our featured. Guest cant pence, a mother, educated and awardwinning watercolor artist. Throughout the time, their time in the public eye, the pences have been fm by wisdom, character and humility. Both charlotte and karen pence have displayed grace in the face of opposition and kindness when faced with their wonderful role models and were offered to have them with us today. Please join me in welcoming charlotte and karen pence. [applause] what a great group we have here. This is my favorite part right here though. Because charlotte really wrote these books to educate children, and i bet you probably are just a little bit curious about how this all started, how did we decide to do this bunny book. Charlotte is the author so shes going to kick it off. Great to see all you guys here today. It really all started with marlon. So when i first got marlon actually went back in college, and so i went to college, like you just heard, to study film, to study movie making. And so i wrote a short film and i had a money in it. I needed to get a bunny because i didnt have marlon yet. So i went online and i started looking for for a bunny to buyi found marlon and i named him marlon bundo which was a joke after the actor marlon brando, which the adults might get. And so marlon became my pet in college. And then he lived with my parents in the cavernous resident in indiana. And then a really became famous after my dad became Vice President because when we moved from indiana to washington, d. C. We had to go on an airplane called air force two, and when were getting off of the plane with all of our stuff and all of our pets and all of our luggage, a lot of reporters in the media get pictures of us taking a big bunny cage off of the plane. And so they really wanted to know what was in the cage and by we had a bunny. They thought it was really funny. And so as this lots of questions about marlon and kind of became famous. And so, you guys know what instagram is . Okay. In the adults . [laughing] any adults . He hasnt instagram account, and he is way more followers than i do actually. He became kind of famous that way. We call him the bunny of the United States botus. The president goes by president of United States, potus. That became a joke and a competent and scrimp marlon became really famous which made my mom and i really want to write a book about him. So actually yes over 32,000 followers on instagram. When charlotte was your age, she used to tell stories. She would tell her sisters stories when she was falling asleep at night. Audrey would say charlotte, tommy another story, and charlotte told the elaborate stories where she would add to them the next night and she would develop the characters, and she would line up her stuffed animals and dolls and tell them stories. So when she want to go to college and study filmmaking and writing, we knew that was the right path for her. So ive always known charlotte was going to be an author. Always known it. What as her mom, to have her ask me to collaborate with her and be the illustrator for her first book, was quite an honor for me. I had never illustrated a book. So she asked me to paint all the water colors in the book. So the first book weekend decided that, when the Vice President became the Vice President , there was a lot about it we didnt know. It happened pretty quickly and our lives, and so we thought either of the people, especially schoolchildren, might wonder a little bit about what is the role of the Vice President. And where does he live and what is his life like . The first book was a day in the life of the Vice President , and marlon went around with the Vice President in the book and goes to all the places with the Vice President goes. There were a lot of interesting facts that you may not know that we didnt know, like the Vice President lives at the naval observatory. So our house where we live actually is on a naval base right in washington, d. C. , and its what the observatory is. So we talk a little bit about the observatory. We talk about the naval enlisted aides, the minute women who take care of that house, because the house belongs to the navy. We talk about the fact that the Vice President is actually the president of the senate. So he has an office in the capital. He also has an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office building, which marlon called the wonderful eeov and thats the real link with a office of the Vice President is to do a lot of things about the vice presidency that we didnt know until we came into this role. We thought it would be a great educational tool. One of the things charlotte did, and you all were wanting to be writers, one of the things you have to do as a writer, you have to do a lot of research. In the back of the book that our educational fax that tell you about what its like to be the Vice President. That was the first book. So when we were coming up with an idea for another book, we decided kind of wanted to write something that talked about all the values we have in america and the history of those values. In this book which on battery to you guys, marlon listens to the pledge of allegiance which all just said so well. There are a lot of words in nevada kind of confusing sometimes. Hes confused about them and so he decides that he wants to go around washington, d. C. So he can we learn about the different values that we hold dear in america. So when he gets to visit the monuments and memorials, we talk about the military and also talk about freedom of speech and things like that. So i can read it now. I wont spoil it. Okay, so this is Marlon Bundos day in the Nations Capital. Hi there. Have we met . If not, im marlon bundo pinch. I live in washington, d. C. With my grandma and grandpa picky might know them as a Vice President at second lady. There are lots of hits at my home, the naval observatory. Today we have schoolchildren visiting from all over the country. Grandma used a teacher so she leads them in the pledge of allegiance. Can you say it with us . I pledge allegiance to the flag of United States of america and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Good job the second time. With one erase i listed the words of the pledge out a few of all confused. What do liberty and justice mean . How are we one nation under god . Grandma says the pledge of allegiance and minds of all the things that make america special. Justice means treating everyone fairly and liberty is all about freedom. One of our freedoms is religious freedom, says grandma, which is what a lot of people came to america. Ihop to the when a look at the National Cathedral down the street. This is one of the symbols in washington that stands for religious freedom. Grandma says there are more places and our Nations Capital where we can learn what the pledge means. Lets hop around and find them. One of the ways we exercise our freedom is by voting for our elected leaders. The pledge of allegiance has the United States is a republic, which means we get to choose who are leaders are. Look, i can see the capitol dome. In this country we all have to obey the laws. Which means speedy he did not actually pose there. [laughing] that probably wouldve gotten us in trouble. But were also allowed to have our own opinions about important things. The place with this is protected as a supreme court, the place that is in charge of upholding justice and making sure every american citizen is treated fairly, no matter how rich or poor or young or old you are. Can you guess how Many Supreme Court justices there are . We can also learn about important issues, inform our own opinions by reading it when we read about famous people and events from history, we learned important lessons, like how to treat everyone fairly. A good place to read is at the library of congress which has thousands of books. Its the Biggest Library in the world. I even found my first book here. We can also learn a lot about our country by looking at historical documents. Some of those are found in the national archives, including the u. S. Constitution, written more than
