There is a crazy man on the loose who would gun down three kids in a car. Here is mommy prancing around in a reenactment and laughing and telling jokes. Mrs. Downs was wounded in the left arm and able to drive the children to the hospital that night. A part of me was afraid that thats where i came from does that mean where im going . 9yearold christy was shot first. 3yearold danny was shot in the back. 3yearold sheryl was in the back and die on the way to the hospital. Georgetown law school, i know these are two institutions of which you have had long association. You are here tonight to 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Your career has focused on equality more broadly. You said he wished your mother could have lived in an age when mothers good is and achieve and daughters were treated equally to sons. And cherished. What do you imagine your mother would have been or done had she lived in such an age . Is it true that she marched on behalf of the 19th amendment . Whens, my mother was 18 the 19th amendment became part of the constitution. 16, she took15 and part in
Of the 19th amendment. So when she the 9th amendment became a part of the constitution. So when she was 15 and 16, she took part in the parades in new york york. You asked what she would have done . Yes. My mother was one of the brightest people i knew. She might have been a University Professor or University President , or a legal luminary but those were so far beyond her reach. She grew up in a large family. Six of her siblings survived into adulthood. She graduated high school at age 15. Only one person in that large family went to university. And that was the eldest son. My mother went to work at age 15 to help support the family because they would not have any income from the eldest son. But if any child would have a university education, it would not be the eldest daughter, it would be the eldest son. Well, as we talk further, i will ask you whether you think weve actually achieved that situation where daughters are cherished as much as sons. But let me turn to the 19thamendment.
