Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi yesterday sentenced 10 pirates involved in the 2020 hijack of a merchant vessel, FV HAILUFENG II to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of N200, 000 on each count. The suspects were convicted on a three count charge bothering on piracy in contravention of the provisions of Section 3, 10 and 12 of the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act 2019. The acused include Frank Abaka, Jude Eberagha, Shina Alolo, Joshua Iwiki, David Akinseye, Ahmed Toyin, Shobajo Saheed, Adeola Philip, Mathew Masi and Bright Agbedeyi. Delivering the judgment, the trial judge, Justice Ayokunle Faji, said that piracy was an embarrassment to the nation and had impacted the economy negatively.
