Cnn news central month until Election Day. He said to join Donald Trump tomorrow when the former president returns to butler, pennsylvania the site where he survived an assassination attempt. This afternoon, we are tracking both campaigns and a couple of hours. As for Vice President harris, she set to speak this hour in detroit. Cnns Priscilla Alvarez is covering her campaign for us. Priscilla obviously, this news about obama and now hitting the trail as well as a big deal, what should we do you expect from this Event Tonight . And whats coming up with the former president well, it certainly the Harris Campaign will take all the help they can get when were just shy of Election Day here in november. Now, the former president will make his first public Campaign Appearance since the Democratic National Convention next week at that rally in pittsburgh. And thats not going to be the last of it. Its going to be multiple rallies in battleground states. Hes also expected to record ads and lend his name to email solicitations for Campaign Cash because this isnt just about the president ial race, its also about the downballot races. So the former President Barack Obama helping their across the board because aid say this is a quote, all hands on deck, moment. Now, for the Vice President s part, she as you mentioned, is in michigan where she is going to have a rally later today, but i am now being told by sources that shes also going to meet with a small group of Arab American leaders im american leaders were call that this has been a community that the administration has had some conflict with because of the devastation in gaza. And concerns about the way the Biden Administration is handling the israel hamas war. Now, the Vice President s office has been engaged with these leaders but this will be her sitting down with them in michigan later this afternoon again, that according to sources that ive spoken with, one of the groups that will be part of this is a group that has already endorsed her while also acknowledging that they didnt fully approve of the way the administration is handling this war. So certainly an interesting and interesting moment, but it also is indicative of how the Vice President and her campaign are trying to shore up as many votes as they can, especially in these communities. And among these community members, thats still hold doubts and concerns about this administration and their policies for us. Thatll be a significant moment later tonight in flint will of course, bring you that as it happens. Priscilla alvarez. Thank you so much for that report. Turning now to the trump campaign, Cnns Alayna Treene joins us with the latest alayna really a surprising moment. Brian kemp and Donald Trump sidebyside for the first time in four years after so much weirdness between them yeah, i dont think theres any love mean, this is pretty remarkable as someone who has covered Donald Trump for several years as well as was on The Hill during the house January 6 Committee Hearings this is pretty remarkable to see the two of them coming back together, particularly after all of the demeaning comments that Donald Trump has had for Brian Kemp over the last four years. And remember, not even just that he also had recruited someone else, another republican, former senator david perdue, to run against Brian Kemp after the 2020 election because Brian Kemp refused to overturn the Election Results in georgia. And so theres a lot of his sri, there a very fraught history, i should say, but look, this is politics and what weve seen is Donald Trump and his campaign recognize that not only of course, is georgia such a crucial state as we look ahead to november and theyre looking at all the pathways to get to 270 electoral votes. But also Brian Kemp is a very popular republican in governor, and they need his help in that state. So Thats Part of this. And also just to go back to some of the criticism, i will note how unusual this is. Is that as recently as august Donald Trump was criticizing Brian Kemp saying that he wasnt a great governor attacking his wife, saying he wasnt a true republican. So i mean, some of this fraud has three goes back to as recent as august, but as of now, it looks like unlikely allies that will be there on the ground today. Now boris, one thing that i am watching for is how the two really respond to what theyll be talking, to, how the Biden Administration is handling the Recovery Efforts after hurricane Hurricane Helene, we remember earlier this week, Donald Trump was on the ground in georgia he actually had said that Brian Kemp was saying that biden had never called him, although we heard from camp himself who said he did talk to biden, he appreciated his efforts. He kind of praised what he has done for the state of georgia following the hurricane as well as the efforts of fema. So some differing opinions theyre am really interested to see how this ends up looking in just a couple hours when they both appear in georgia for us. Yeah, itll be fascinating to watch, important to have a short memory and politics, i guess alayna treene. Thank you so much. Allison. Okay. Boris, now to the huge Jobs Report out today showing a solid and growing job market, us economy created 200 254,000 new jobs last month, greatly exceeding expectations, unemployment ticked down and all of this sparked a stock market rally. Its also one of the last major snapshots of the economy will get before Election Day. So lets bring in Cnn Business Anchor sure. Julia chatterley. Julia, great to see you. What does this report tell us about the economy theyre not so technical term on. This is wow, i think it is just one Data Point, allison, but i think it argues for whats known as a soft landing, which is lower inflation. Without causing a recession. Quite frankly, this Data Point is as good as it gets thats for the White House and the Harris Campaign one month out from a president ial election, whether or not they get the credit for it. As you said, it was a whopping 254,000 jobs added net in september that was way beyond expectations. I immediately got all sorts of skeptical texts from people saying, hang on a second. Is this going to be revived . Flies lower next month . And i think thats a fair question, but we did get revisions to both july and August 2 and they added a further 72,000 jobs overall. So if you add all of this together, it looks like a mini acceleration and you can see that in the Bar Chart there. This is not what we were expecting to be clear and its really good news. And of course, this comes actually before the real impact of that half a Percentage Point Rate cut from the fed that we just got. It argues for a quarter of a Percentage Point Rate cut in november, but thats still to kick in. Its good news. Im julia i understand that the strongest hiring was at bars and restaurants, 69,000 new jobs. Thats five times stronger than it had been all year. Whats going on at bars . I blamed politics, quite frankly, i think its driving us all to drink allison, but no seriousness, its quite surprising warning for jobs that were added in september were in bars and restaurants. I think what its suggesting signals is an improvement in Business Conditions. The backend of the summer, even if Consumer Confidence took a bit of a dip, perhaps also plays into some of the Price Adjustments lower inood prices that we saw. Look ultimately, we hope that Consumer Confidence can rise to meet the Business Conditions that were seeing. And thats hopefully what the impact of rate cuts. Well do, but, but overall, cheers to this number, allison, because its a good one. I like that cheers to you as well. Julia chatterley, thank you very much. Joining us now to discuss all of these issues, is former republican congressman and for virginia scott taylor, congressman. Great to see you. So lets start with the Jobs Report. It was better than expected by 100,000 jobs so does that weaken former President Trumps message that the economy is in shambles like let me first say that i am rooting for america, right . I hope that its correct, and i hope that we continue to have that trajectory, but i think as your last guest said its rightful to be skeptical because its just a Data Point theres a Data Point before the Bidenharris Administration that got revised down 800 and some thousand jobs. So i think i think i hope so. I hope its correct. I hope america is on that path for sure, but im certainly skeptical because its coming out right right before the election. Its third Data Point and i think its important to understand that information leads to Reason Emotion leads to action, and the reality is a lot of americans are hurting out there and they dont care about a Data Point that comes out when they, when they can, when theyre struggling to pay for Grocery Bills and Gas And Stuff like that. So i hope so. I mean, im on team america. Im rooting for us, so i hope i hope its true. Yeah. Understood it does. Polls do suggest that americans feelings about the economy are ticking up in a positive way of late theres probably posen on both sides that i talked to a lot of people and a lot of people dont feel that way. And so well see, like i said, im going i hope its true. I hope that we do have a soft landing for everyone in america yep. That was a Cbs News Poll from two weeks ago in case you want to check it. And meanwhile, lets talk about whats happening this afternoon. So were going to see Governor Kemp of georgia and Donald Trump together for the first time in a long time. This is to survey the aftermath of Hurricane Helene Donald Trump continued, as you know, to make these false claims about the biden Administrations Response two, the hurricane, which Governor Kemp was forced to debunk. How does false info during a natural Disaster Help people interesting way to phrase the question, allison, but i dont i take a little bit of it. I dont i dont think you should ask that question and that way and i dont know that his statements were all false. I do know that Brian Kemp he did say he communicated with them, but he also said he also criticized this slowness of the response. He criticized the fact that they only designated 11 counties initially, and i think probably the most egregious thing out of this. And i know people who were on the ground helping folks, right now. And when what im hearing from them is that the Biden Administration is not allowing them to fly drones to help with people. They just came they went to put people in a hotel and there were federal employees hes there and security kicking them out. These are people who just came from the disaster area. I think the federal employees could probably be in a tent and get those people to help out. But i think the biggest point here and my opinion, the worst point and the worst Data Point for the biden Administration And Harris administration is the fact that they spent over 1 Billion out of Fem Budget for Natural Disaster when three months ago, Secretary Mayorkas said that they are absolutely prepared for Hurricane Season and now theyre saying that theyre broke. I dont think he should have a job, quite frankly, because when americans everyday americans are out there and im from virginia, obviously in virginia and tennessee and North Carolina and georgia there watching billions of dollars go overseas theyre Hearing Themis Broke and there are still bodies being found and people still getting Rescue And Search and rescue operations that are out there. Rebuilding hasnt even come close to being started yet. So i think this is a big problem for the Harris And Biden administration because everyday people, theyre seeing that i mean, what i was referring to President Trump saying that the federal government is not being responsive. He said theyre having a hard time getting the president on the phone and that that was the part i dont, think thats entirely false. I think that its being responsive to a point, but i think that theyre hamstrung because theyre out of money right now, which is pretty incredible, quite frankly and certainly a mark on Secretary Mayorkas time there. But i dont think its entirely false to say that there are heroic people out there doing, of course, and we commend them but i mean, im im just i hear you. Im just going by what Governor Kemp was forced to say, which is we got what we need he offered, he was saying the top of the president. He offered that theres other things we need just to call him directly on your butt out soon . With all due respect, your speed about one state and georgia, it was hard hit, of course. But look, in North Carolina, i was just in Virginia Yesterday in Southwest Virginia and tennessee and but North Carolinas thats really a state that could use a lot faster response, could use a lot more money right now. And when youre hearing that famous broke and when youre hearing that wasnt as fast as it needed to be. Thats a big problem. So i mean, people can say President Trump was saying something false, but i dont think thats true and Governor Youngkin Praise him as well. I mean, i hear what youre saying that we have to we were looking at It State by State And Youve made those points on a lighter Note Bruce Springsteen just endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Bruce, as you know, is a cultural icon. Do you think that he, on a serious note influences some swingstate men . No. It looked like i got i like bruce, i love his music. I mean, he was you know, working Class Poet Way back in the day. I just dont like his politics and i dont think that hes i dont really think he has much of effect on this vote. I think that the cake is baked for most people and then the folks that are that slice that are going to be motivated. I dont think that Bruce Springsteen supporting Kamala Harris is going to motivate them in any way. But i do like his music i had you pegged for a springsteen fan. I just instinctively knew that. I knew that former congressman scott taylor, thanks for your time. Thanks for having me still ahead. A Tennessee Company under investigation after claims that they forced employees to work during the deadly storm, 11 workers were swept away in the flood how the company is now responding plus Iran Supreme Leader issuing a new warning towards israel as Israeli Forces continued to pound lebanons capital, beirut will take you live to the region and the Supreme Court begins a new term in just a few days, well get our first look at some of the Hot Button issues they will decide on those details its next on Cnn News central ive been saying publicly what people say and turns out i have enough money. I could just shut up on cnn. Cooking rice just isnt nice, no matter how hard you try, it always comes out stuck on and dry until now. Can Cnn Helene continues to rise at least 213 people killed across six states, making hill in the deadliest storm to hit the u. S. Mainland since katrina in 2005, 11 of the victims dems died in tennessee and some of those deaths are now the subject of two State Probes investigators are looking into what happened at the impact Plastics Factory in erwin. The company denies allegations that it kept workers on the site as floodwaters rose 11 employees were swept away in those waters too, died four are still missing. Just look at how submerged that plant got one worker described what happened when he tried to leave i said, can we leave . In the woman said no, not until i speak with jerry now, ten minutes later, she came back and said, yall can leave. It was too late. Why did you make his work that day . Why . We shouldnt have worked . We shouldnt have been there. None of us should have been there and thats what i said to them why did you make his work when you knew youd Teddington Statement you were monitoring it cnns Gustavo Valdes is in erwin, tennessee. So gustavo, what is the company saying to this . The Company Allison last night released the ceo, released a video, in which he explained the investigation, the internal review of the procedures that were followed that day, and he says that the information they have contradicts what the workers are saying leave the plant, at least 45 minutes before the gigantic force of the flood hit the Industrial Park there was time to escape employees were not told at any time that they would be fired if they left the Plant Timeline of events as they have in register. It starts around 10 35 a. M. They said thats when the water starts to pull in the Parking Lot four minutes later, the Power Outage occurred. Thats when the power planned lost power and thats a moment that many workers have told us is when they wanted to live and they couldnt attend 40 the warnings went off on Cell Phones and 50 they were directed to live in english and spanish and by 11, 35 Senior Management lives after a walkthrough of the area, now, i just spoke with the mayor and the city manager. They tell me that since 8 00 in the morning, they already knew that the river was growing and there was coming this way by 1030, they were already responding to an emergency at the hospital that is upriver and they would do an evacuation they cannot speak as to what the procedures the plant has for these kinds of situations. But they said by 1030 they knew that the situation was dangerous so that they didnt want to comment directly in what the company is saying. They just saying theyre going to cooperate with both investigations that are going on so gustavo now, what are Family Members saying in response to this have lawyers and they are trying to get answers that way. There are some that are frustrated because they said that they havent been able to join the search of the Loved Ones. Those four people missing, but the authority say its very dangerous for them to join. So theres a little bit of frustration and for the loss of their Loved Ones lost . Oh, my mother grandmother, my children my father lost his wife of 38 years of marriage we, are not okay beautiful candlelight vigil. We saw the unity of the town. The mayor says that erwin, tennessee is an example of what america can do together. The salvo valdes we pray that they get some answers and some resolution. Thank you for us the new supreme Court Term starts on monday and today, we got our first look at some of the major cases that justices we will be reviewing. They do involve some of the biggest issues of our time border crime, job discrimination, and more. Cnn chief supreme Court Analyst Joan Biskupic is with us for the details so john, whats on tap for the justices . Well, you know, were just three days away from the first monday in october, the traditional opening of the new term that will run through next summer. And they have about 40 cases on tap and they just took 13 new ones today. And let me tell you about three of the 13th that are important. One is Smith And Wesson brands versus mexico and in this case, it tests whether mexico can Sue American Gun Manufacturers For Aiding And Abetting unlawful firearm mexican Drug Cartels. Federal law generally prohibits these kinds of lawsuits, protects the gun manufacturers, but mexico is saying theres an manufacturer might be Aiding And Abetting the criminal activity Thats Number one. Another one aims versus Ohio Department of youth services has kind of counterfactual situation here where the case was brought by a straight woman whos claiming she was denied a promotion by her Gay Boss in favor of another gay employee. And whether as a member of a Majority Group, the plaintiff in a Majority Group here, not a minority group, actually has to prove a bit more under title seven of the 1964 civil Rights Act that prohibits sex discrimination. Whether she has to show some additional pattern of bias or other Background Circumstances and finally the Nuclear Regulatory Commission versus texas. And this test the Nrcc Plan to actually take spent nuclear fuel and allow it to be stored in texas is permian basin. This is a test of federal regulatory power that has been a theme of the Roberts Court as the Roberts Court has in many ways, restricted the hand of the federal government and to that point, joan, just as we were about to Go On, we got an alert that the Supreme Court actually sided with the Epa Ryan on this is an ongoing case in involving another Epa Regulation for certain kinds of the admissions where it was challenged. And instead of putting the Epa Program on hold as the court has done many, many times for epa and other environmental safeguards, it said, no, were not going to intervene at that point. So that was a rare win for the environmental agency in that case. Yeah. So when monday comes around and the justices sit in court for the first time since july. What are you anticipating . Well see. I cannot wait until they entered through those curtains and they do enter through curtains, three sets of curtains, and i wanted to see what they whether they seem happy to be with each other, whether the bitterness from last July 1st when the trump immunity case came down, whether that is still on their faces, if they look like theyre in the mood to engage with each other, how they treat the advocates at the lectern, you know, we dont get to see these nine justices its much, and this is the first time they will be there on their elevated bench for all of us to say, just watching the giveandtake between them and starting right away next week, boris, we had those. We have a lot of major cases coming right away and i think we talked you and i talked about last Monday Beginning on tuesday with a Ghost Guns challenge. Thats to the Government Regulation of Gun Kits that right now some of the manufacturers, they should not have to fall under federal regulation for, Registration And Syria theyll numbers and all that. Yeah, a lot of important cases. Itll be fascinating to hear you report about the interpersonal dynamics especially given the acrimony that you kind of felt it, thats right. Decision on track trumps immunity. Joan biskupic, thanks so much for the update. Look forward to monday. Thank you. The strikes are part of a broader campaign to cripple the iranbacked militia. Today, iran issuing several new threats. The countrys Supreme Leader warning they will attack israel again if necessary. Sorry, while iran is Deputy Commander says, israels Energy Infrastructure could be hit in response to any new attacks on iran. Cnn international diplomatic editor Nic Robertson is live for us from tel aviv. So nick, what is the latest from israel . Yeah, latest from here is that as you say, over the past 24 hours, 100 hezbollah fighters have been killed at the border by the idf over the past few days since Ground Operations began this week, 250 were killed we know the Defense Smith Minister has been at the Border Today saying that the idf, Idf Operating in several villages inside of lebanon, and that there are more attacks to come. The idf has also been reading the number or increasing rather than number of villages that it is warning lebanese civilians to leave in the part of lebanon that total now up to over 100 villagers. Those civilians have been warned to leave and a new warning from the idf for medical personnel in the south of lebanon, warning them about being used by Hezbollah To Transport hezbollah. All their equipment. Because we know that the World Health Organization has said at least a couple of Dozen Health officials have really been killed him inside of lebanon so far. So thats another warning that the idf has issued inside lebanon. But the warnings, if you will, coming from the iranian leadership, that they are ready to strike back at israel if it strikes at them. And very precise wording from the deputy military commander saying, look, we in iran have a Big Country essentially saying its hard to damage our infrastructure. But he said in israel, there are only three powergenerating plants and a couple of oil refineries. He said, we can hit all of those once this seems to be a very stark warning as israel is poised to respond to Irans Attack here, a couple of days ago. And that does point to the potential for serious Escalation Spill okay. Nic robertson. Thank you for being on the ground for us. The former Memphis Police officers were convicted thursday of Witness Tampering and connection to the death of nichols back in january 2023. The 29yearold died just steps away from his home as he was calling out for his mother cnns Shimon Prokupecz joins us now, shimon prosecutors were unable to get a conviction on the most serious civil rights charges for two of the officers. Do they see that as a setback well, it certainly boris, not the outcome that they wanted or expected here, right . I mean, this charge, the top count here on the civil rights had to do with Tyre Nichols death, and the responsibility basically at the hands of these Office Officers who are supposed to protect him. But they argued instead violated his civil rights and how they detained him, and how they treated him, and the fact that they didnt give him the level of care that he needed so that jury decided that the prosecutors here of federal prosecutors in Federal Court did not meet their burden. And so theyve acquitted these officers of the top count. The top count where if they were convicted, they could potentially would have would have spent the rest of their life in a federal prison, but instead, what you now have is these officers still facing a substantial amount of prison time, but certainly not on the top Count Today this morning, the attorneys for the families are starting to react. Take a listen to what one of the attorneys said are relieved to know that all the officers will be held accountable. They could face up to 20 years in prison. And now were going to be focused on the sentencing. We want the same thing to happen to those officers. What would have happened if the roles were reversed and tyre will be convicted of killing them and conspiring to cover it up. And boris, theres also still a State Case. The officers theres five officers actually involved in this. Two of them pleaded guilty to federal charges and were cooperating here with prosecutors, but theres still a State Case where these officers are actually facing Murder Charges that is set to Go On trial at some point, perhaps at the end of the year. So the families will have to sit through this and relive a lot of that horrific video and a lot of that testimony. Yet again, as they continue to seek Accountability And Justice for their son shimon, has there been any reaction from the officers themselves or their attorneys now, theres been no reaction from the officers or their attorney. I mean, obviously, they feel relieved in one sense, but one of the things that the attorneys here did was as i said, there were these two officers who were involved in this and they pleaded guilty and they were cooperating with the government in this case. And the Defense Attorneys here did for the other officers here was that they tried to paint a picture that actually those two officers were more responsible for what happened here. And when you look at this verdict, perhaps that worked in this case they thought that that was going to be a key thing for them to Defense Attorneys to paint those officers as the ones responsible for it. And it seems to have worked here and the Department Of Justice, shimon was conducting a separate review of the use of force at the Memphis Police department. Whats the update there yes. So thats very much still ongoing. And these investigations take a really, really long time and the Department Of Justice could wait for the criminal investigations, the criminal cases to end before they take any kind of action because they dont want to obviously affect the Jurors Decision going forward. So we could be looking to sometime next year before we hear the results of any of that investigation but i was on the ground, boris, when this happened, the days after the community there certainly is playing a big role in that investigation. They have certainly have felt for a long time that their rights are being violated by these officers, by officers from the Memphis Police department and also the unit. Remember these officers were part of a plane Clothes Unit called the Scorpion Unit and they would just drive around, really tried to stop crime. They were very, very aggressive unit and that is something thats certainly the Department Of Justice so this is looking into the unit has been disbanded as a result of what happened here and there have been some changes at the Memphis Police department as a result of what happened here Shimon Prokupecz thank you so much. Allison now, to some other headlines, were watching this hour. You may be entitled to a portion of that money all when 8085920400. Thats when 800 8085920400 a major public Health Practice is facing new Scrutiny Fluoride in Drinking Water has been promoted for decades as a way to prevent cavities but new research is casting doubt on its effectiveness and raising concerns about potential health risks especially for children. And this is really eyeopening. Cnns Meg Tirrell joins us now with the details. Meg walk us through the insight from this report so fluoride, of course, is a mineral that can be added to Drinking Water and its known to produce to prevent Tooth Decay. It was first started to be added to Drinking Water in the united states and 1945 now its in 63 of the u. S. Populations Drinking Water as an edited, as an added substance to try to give this Public Health benefit. And it has been listed as one of the top ten Public Health achievements of the 20th century. Thats how important sort of fundamental this has been as a public Health Intervention however, since 1975, most toothpastes have started to include fluoride and so the cochrane collaboration, which is an independent group that does scientific reviews, started to look at the evidence of before 1975 versus after 1975. What is the impact on Tooth Decay of fluoride in Drinking Water and communities and what they found is that the benefits seems to have decreased since fluoride became more widely available and other substances in studies from before that period, they found that there was a decrease of about one Baby Tooth of Tooth Decay as a result of fluoride in Drinking Water compared with after 1975, that benefit reduced to on average, about a quarter of a Tooth Reduction in Tooth Decay. And so they are theyre saying that its important to Take A Look at what the situation is now and to start to weigh the benefits and potential risks of safety of adding fluoride to Drinking Water. Meg, this is fascinating because people who were Fluoride Skeptics were generally seen as Conspiracy Theorists of some kind. So are there actual Safety Concerns with the fluoride in water and so we have to be really careful how we look at what the data actually show. And so right now, it seems to be characterized as questions. There have been reports including as recently as this summer from a federal agency that raised a link between levels of florida alright. And Drinking Water that were twice as high as what the national recommended level is and impacts to drink iqs. So there are also been questions of exposure for pregnant women and the result for their babies from having fluoride that are at levels that are higher than would be recommended. So these are the things that federal agencies are taking getting closer looks at right now, researchers are not saying as a blanket, we should take fluoride out of the Drinking Water. This is still something that most Public Health agencies recommend. But with this new evidence theyre saying, lets Take A Look. The implications are murky. Hopefully the water is not murky. I see what you did there. Thank you so much still ahead.
