could help reach out just some of those suburban voters, like herself erin. >> all right. geoff i want to thank you very much. thanks for joining us. the news continues now right here on cnn it's wednesday, june 5th, right now on cnn, this morning, band at the order asylum seekers waking up to new rules after president biden's executive action already facing political and legal challenges victory and discipline appointment india's prime minister winning a third consecutive term in erase though, that was much closer than predicted. >> and boeing about to try one more time to launch two astronauts to the international space station on its starliner spacecraft all right five again here in washington, a live look at our us but on this wednesday morning. good morning, everyone. it's wonderful to have you with us. i'm kasie hunt president biden's new restrictions on asylum seekers at the us mexico border are now in effect only a limited number of migrants claiming asylum will be allowed to cross into the us each day until the threshold is met. immigration advocates argue that the measure puts lives at risk and doesn't go far enough to fix a broken system the president says his hand was forced i'm moving past republican obstruction and using the executive authorities available to me as president to do what i can on my own address the border democrats are divided many see it as necessary while some progressives are calling it a betrayal it is extremely disappointing that this white house would choose to double down on the previous administration's harmful and flawed immigration policies. >> it's not perfect fake, but i am supportive of the action that he took today. >> she knows that probably the courts will reject it as they did when president trump did. and that really throws the, the, the issue back to congress. >> the asylum is a very important part of america's history. but now the system is being abused. i think it was the right thing to do. >> all right. joining me, i'll congressional reporter for the hill, michael schnell. michael. >> good morning to you. thanks so much for being here this morning so what are we hearing in terms of reaction to this, you saw democrats there who tend to be in more swing areas, shall we say, on board with what the president's doing at the at the already heard of this, it's a reflection of just how difficult this problem is politically for the president, right? so first two, for starters, right out the gate, we saw republicans slamming this effort by the biden administration, essentially saying it's a, it's too little too late and accusing the president of making a purely political move. of course, because we've seen in all the polls that immigration is the top issue that voters trust for president trump over president biden to handle the issue of immigration. so they're saying that this is totally a political thing. up. speaker mike johnson calling it, quote week and window dressing. so that's been the general consensus among republicans, democrats have been formed more interesting in aftermath of this executive order because they've been pretty split. we've got progressives and liberals who are sounding off on this executive order or doing that it goes way too far. we've seen especially folks from the congressional hispanic caucus saying that an enforcement only order is not the way to do this. there needs to be some sort of path to citizenship. and again, accusing the president of making a purely political move. but then we've seen some more centrist and moderate democrats who are in those tough races running against republicans, running ads republicans in districts that maybe are a little more purple or lean a little bit red, who are saying that this was a good move by the president. clearly, the situation at the southern border knit to be addressed, this issue cannot be ignored. the president did it in a in a good fashion while noting that this is, we got to this point because republicans were not allowed that bipartisan border deal to progress through congress, right? >> and i mean, the, the bet for the president here are stephen collinson here at cnn, who tries to frame this, these big picture trends for us. he writes, quote, biden would never say it bluntly in public. but as gamble with progressives carries an implicit question. where else are they going to go? because at the end of the day, they're not going to donald trump, right? >> so i mean, i like look at michigan for example, because in that problem hi mary, we saw somewhere between ten and 20% of voters go the uncommitted route. so president trump, president biden was of course, going to win the primary in that state. the uncommitted was not any threat to him, but it was a protest vote and it was good to take the temperature. so they voted uncommitted there. but our democrats going to stay home or progressive? this is going to stay home because the president made this executive order on the border probably not because while progressives and liberals may hate this executive order, there's one thing that they hate even more, and it's foreign president trump, and they're nervous about the policies that he can enact on the border if he is present. so i think that's an interesting taken. maybe the gamble that president biden is taking, right? naff. >> but also remember we have to look at these polling because it's what we have in the leadup to the election. >> the border for the third month in a row, last month gallup found it to be the number one issue to americans 20 we actually have that polling which 20 screen 27%. and then the first new polling from decision desk hq. this month saying that voters trust for president trump on the border by more than 20 points over president biden. so we've got that one too. he had well, there you go biden campaign and administration must be looking at these numbers. they're hard to ignore. and when we're talking about the 24 election being so closely divided, anything they can pick up in this leadup could be decisive, clearly, trying to make a move at the border right now, let's look at what donald trump had to say in the wake of this executive order let's just play a little bit of that public relations. executive order that is meaningless. meaningless. he could do you could stop the millions of people coming into our country with one order in one signature. it's all there for him. i did it so i'm going to set aside the fact that it's much more complicated than what donald trump just said. >> there but the bottom line is, trump's criticizing this. he actually did do something very similar during his, that's what this order was. it's based on and i should say it was successfully challenged in the courts by groups like the aclu, which says it's going to challenge this one. and the aclu actually said we were successful during the trump administration. i imagine will be six this time round. look, i think that for president trump's statement, right there is just emblematic of the political importance that is the issue of immigration and the situation at the then border in the leadup to november, republicans know they have the upper hand on this issue. they know they're leading with it. they're running away with it. it's a true vulnerability for president biden. that's why they didn't want to hand him a win when the bipartisan border deal came up in the senate, both in february and last month. we're seeing the same thing right now. republicans don't want to praise this policy, even though they may actually agree with it. it is something it is putting some sort of limit at the border which obsessively you would imagine they would be in favor of they don't want to say that because they don't want to give president biden credit on this very important issue when we just really around the corner from the election. yeah, it's election year politics straight everything my clothes, chanel thank you very much for starting us off this morning. >> i really appreciate your time all right. >> we've got a developing story right now in lebanon, a shooting reported near the us embassy. this is just northeast of beirut. lebanese troops were deployed to a report of gunfire. the embassy called it's small arms fire as the suspect, a syrian national was injured when those troops also opened fire, they are still working to figure out these circumstances of the shooting are coming up next here, india's prime minister stays in power, but his grip is slipping. plot hunter biden's words being declaring victory after elections delivered him a right-wing governing coalition mission, while also handing him some unexpected setbacks, motors wrote modi's ruling party falling short of securing an outright majority in parliament an outcome so surprising, one pollster started crying on live tv when, he saw the results, derrick joining me now to discuss cnn international anchor max foster max, good morning. quite an image there that pollster crying on tv. this was a surprise. help us understand why it was a surprised, because the poles really showed that there was gonna be a landslide. he seen as a very powerful figure, the opposition have been a weekend previous elections, but bounce back a bit this time. and this is where he really went down in history. so he's going into a third term only in nehru has done who was seen by many as the founding father of a modern india. so he's seen as this very powerful figure who didn't quite swing it in the way he had hoped. but we have to remember he did win his bjp party is still very much in control. but the challenge there's now is finding an alliance partner. there are about five king makers. i was told by an engine expert earlier today that he'll have to work with to make it work long term. so he's going to have to compromise somewhere and it's going to have to choose where he's going to have to compromise. and this isn't a leader who we are used to seeing compromise it's really interesting and max, what do you expect this will mean in terms of how modi pushes india to interact with allies in the west and elsewhere. >> i mean, what sort of changes do you anticipate it? it does seem like this is going to make it harder for him to implement his agenda at home. does that have an impact on his ability to work with allies around the world well, there are two views of him really the one within india, which is very much focused on the economy. >> and there have been allegations of corruption and strong hand tactics, if you liked with opposite position because a lot of that comes into the national debate there on the global stage he is, he is becoming a more and more important figure because close to china, also close to the united states and he is his international policy is almost a relationship policy, a key figure, a charismatic, big, strong leader in india working with other like-minded leaders. so expecting him to work with trump if he gets into power in a similar way, he works directly with xi. so the way he presents himself with a global stages as a big, powerful figure in terms of policy, it's not always that clear in terms of international policy because he does try to work with everyone and everyone is trying to woo him. china's charter with him, america is trying to woo him the big important economy, and everyone wants them on side, but he's getting with everyone likes the strong the strong man. so that's been interesting and it'll be interesting to see how he continues with that. >> well, it's a bit undermining right. to not have had this be the sweeping victory that he and his allies had projected. it might max foster for us in london, max always grateful for you. thank you so much. thank you. casey. >> i just ahead here, boeing's starliner preparing for liftoff and just a few hours after two failures plus president biden landing in france to commemorate this 80th a heat dome as temperatures spiked to the triple digits, it is a major challenge for firefighters who are battling the corral wildfire in central california are meteorologists, lisa rafah, tracking all of it for us. elisa, good morning good morning we do have excessive heat warnings that are in effect for multiple days as we go into the next couple of days and mean, look at the warnings that stretch the spine there of sierra nevada what is going into parts of southern california and then vegas, phoenix, all included in these warnings that go at least through thursday and friday. >> we are looking at at least 100 temperature records being dropped daytime highs, and overnight lows. and we take a look at some of these high temperatures. yes. places like phoenix, vegas do get hot and we're headed into the summer heat season. but we've been for them, this is dangerously hot, this early in the season, your average high in vegas this time of year is 96 degrees, but it could be candy, some of their earliest 110 degree temperatures on record, same thing for phoenix, your average is around 100, but we're looking at temperature is getting up to 110 110115 palm springs as well at temperatures of good ten degrees above average. so you can see these temperatures are ten to 50 ten degrees above average from sacramento to vegas and salt lake city. as we go through thursday and friday as well as this heat just continues to sink. we're looking at major too extreme impacts, again from southern california through parts of arizona, even stretching into southern texas if dangerously hot for early june, making people more vulnerable to heat sickness, we're not i really acclimated to this type of heat yet. so you want to check on children, elderly, and pets. now, take a look at this. it has been 25 years since los vegas has hit a daily cold low temperature 25 years, they have had so many more records for heat than they have for cold. and that is because the summer you with us stay three of hunter biden's federal gun trial in delaware court began yesterday with the jury hearing opening thank statements. prosecutors and defense attorneys battling over the one fundamental issue, whether the president's son lied about being an addict when he purchased a gun in 2018? prosecutor derek hines telling the jury, quote, we would not be here today if he was just a drug addict, he crossed the line when he chose to buy a gun and lai during a federal background check, addiction may not be a choice, but lying and buying a gun is a choice. biden's central defense in the case that he did not consider himself an addict at the time of the purchase, biden's defense attorney, reminding the jury, quote, what's common to all three charges is the requirement that prosecutors left off their slide they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that hunter knowingly violated the law during witness testimony prosecutors used hunters own words against him playing several passages from the audio book for his 2021 memoir i possessed a new superpower, the ability to find crack and anytown at anytime, no matter how and familiar the terrain it was easy it was easy joining me now from wilmington, delaware is cnn's marshall cohen. marshall good morning. so wonderful to have you here. you were in the courtroom yesterday. what were your main takeaways from what you saw unfold there and honestly, some of the most dramatic moments may have come outside the courtroom in a clash between a hunter biden's wife and former trump aide. what have you learned casey. >> good morning to you. it was pretty remarkable throughout the day to watch these proceedings unfold. hunter biden, obviously in the defendant seat. first lady jill biden, just a few rows behind him in the pews along with everybody else in that packed courtroom, i think both sides see a path to victory here and they were trying to spell that out for the jury in their opening statements, you just read a few key quotes there that sort of explain how the prosecutors think they can get to a conviction and the defense thinks that they may be able to so enough reasonable doubt to avoid hunter biden. getting a criminal record and possibly even going to prison one of the more gripping moments was the audio book you just read. you just played one clip. i've got another clip that i want to play for you. the prosecutors used this clip to try to establish the timeline of hunters drug addiction remember, he is accused of buying a gun in 2018 while addicted to drugs, which would be a violation of the law. he wrote the book in 2019. so listen closely to where he describes the timeline of his addiction if i could find some new treatments, some new approach, some new lifeline. i thought i could still call my way back out during the nearly four years of active addiction that preceded this trip to california, which included a half dozen rehab attempts. that's what i told myself after each failure. >> the prosecutor said pretty clearly in we're trying to walk the jury right through this 2019 minus four years because he said four years of addiction that goes back to 2015, which obviously would cover the time that he bought that gun. the defense disagrees with that, but clearly, the prosecutors, casey, trying to use hunter biden's own words against him very interesting at marshall. this has, of course, a family affair that touches the president of the united states because this is hassan who he has stood very solidly by. >> he has talked quite a bit about that. but obviously politics got into this as well when there was nbc news reported this confrontation between hunter biden's wife, melissa cohen. biden and a man named garrett ziglar so she approached him and bc reported pointed her finger at him and said in a loud voice, quote you have no right to be here. you not see peace of s ziglar then told nbc news it's sad, i've been sitting here the whole time and having approached anyone for the record, i am not a nazi. i'm a believer in the us constitution. i haven't said one thing to him. now, this guy was apparently involved in the hunter biden laptop controversy. what do we know about him and how did you experience this playing out in court and around an after court yesterday well. >> case he let me be very clear that cnn has not independently corroborated that report from nbc. we reached out to hunter biden's team and they did not have anything to say about the matter, but i can tell you that number one, melissa cohen biden, the wife of hunter biden, she has been in the courtroom during this whole trial, sitting right next to the first lady and gerrit ziegler has also been in the courtroom and courthouse as well. so garrett ziegler, he's not a household name, but he is definitely very well known to the hunter biden family and the entire biden family. he's a former trump white house official mesial. and then after trump left office, ziegler sort of became the number one tormentor of hunter biden. he published a website, actually the contains all lot of materials from that hunter biden laptop or at least that are claimed to be from that laptop including very explicit videos and salacious images that the prosecutors would never think of using in court sexually explicit materials, casey, that basically doxxed hunter biden. hunter is suing garrett ziegler in court over this whole incident? i saw garret around the courthouse yesterday. >> he luck. he's been following hunter biden every nook and cranny of hunter biden's life for many years. so it's not a surprise why is that? he would show up at this court. it is somewhat more surprising that a member of hunter biden's family would lash out directly at him knowing that there are so many reporters around, but clearly the tensions are high hi and they feel like this is a man that has doxxed hunter biden tried to destroy his life by spreading these materials online for everyone to see a lot of emotions running very, very high. marshall cohen farce this morning, marshall, very grateful to have you on the show. thank you very much. >> all right. today, senate democrats are going to vote on legislation to protect access to contraception. the senate is going to vote on it. the move comes as republicans are struggling with messaging around abortion nearly two years after roe versus wade was overturned the senate majority leader, chuck schumer, wrote in a dear colleague letter, democrats are putting the issue front and center. he writes this as horrific as these state abortion bans are there just the tip of the iceberg, adding the scourge of republicans, anti reproductive rights agenda extends to contraception as well here's what republicans are doing to try to get ahead of this axios reporting senate republicans are being instructed to quote, clearly outline their support and quote for policies that increase access to birth control. joining me now is san and political analyst in washington bureau chief for the boston globe. jackie consented to jackie. good morning. wonderful to see you running. >> so this is a vote obviously democrats have set up to try to make life hard for senate republicans on contraception because this is of course, something that they warned about immediately as roe v. wade was being overturned. how do we expect this to play out in the senate it's not without reason, right? >> i mean, you did have clarence thomas writing in his support of the dobbs decision gen. that precedent like access to contraception, gay marriage, things like that should be looked at again and perhaps overturned in the wake of dobbs so and also you had former president trump speaking to, i believe, a news outlet and pennsylvania of just a few weeks ago saying that you might have to he might have to look at that. the states might have different views on consciousness deception now he backtracked shortly thereafter and said he would never before overturning the right to contraception. however, that did plant the seed, that did start. again, this push from senate democrats to codify abortion, excuse me, a codified by contraception in the us senate. >> again, this is a procedural move by democrats and republicans are expected to block, right? this is why i puts them in a tough position here was harris on kimmel last night talking about this, the vice president watch in that decision that under the protections of roe, clarence thomas of the quiet part out loud, that contraception could very much be at risk and it is at risk. and let's understand moving forward, not only is that at risk look at ivf and what has happened and how it clinics have closed because of fear that they may be violating the law to provide ivf treatment so she's talking of course, about clarence thomas's comments there. >> right. and this isn't even happening in a vacuum. the washington post is a really good rundown today of some of the things that are going in the states missouri, a bill block to widen access to contraception and louisiana, a bill block two enshrine contraception rights in an idaho trying to ban iuds and plan b, there's a movement to do that. so these things are already happening in states. these seeds are being planted. so there is reason to be concerned, there is reason for this legislation, politics aside really kind. of striking set of realities here. object. you want to move to a piece out in the wall street journal and if we can put the headline up on the screen, there's a couple of things that we want to make sure that we're very careful to note about this this new reporting. the headline is behind closed doors. biden shows signs of slipping. participants in meeting, say the 81-year-old president performed poorly at times, the white house said biden is sharp and his critics are playing partisan politics now this is hung in no small part on quote from kevin mccarthy, the former speaker of the house, who we should note, said to reporters that biden was strong hong and after some of this, but this is what mccarthy said, quote, i used to meet with him when he was vice president. i go to his house. >> he's not the same person. >> and then this is what the white house said back, literally the only on record critic and the stories kevin mccarthy, who contradicts his own previous statements and then the receipts they say are quote, very professional, very smart, very tough at the same time, mccarthy told reporters at the capitol of his talks with biden. now broadly, the white house also says congressional republicans, foreign liters nonpartisan national security experts have made clear in their own words, if you can put this up, that president biden is a savvy and effective leader who has a deep record of legislative accomplishment. now in 2024, house republicans are making false claims as a political tactic that flatly contradict previous statements made by the themselves and their colleagues. now the journal base this on interviews they say with 45 people over several months. and at points to the white house actually reached out to these offices and had them called the journal backed democrats, democrats did, which i actually think is a very interesting piece of this report because it shows just how acutely attuned the white house is to the challenges around this you took the words right out of my mouth case. i know that paragraph. i i haven't screenshot right here on my phone because it really did that that jumped out at me, that not only they know this is a vulnerability, joe biden, those vulnerability and that interview with time magazine that came out this week, he's asked about his age and whether he even considered the fact that his age would be a hindrance. and he said no. and as usual, joe biden bravado, but listen, you don't call you, don't keep tabs on democrats that the duavsha journal is, they're reviewing then have them circle back to highlight biden strength. if you are darn sure. and you don't think this isn't a vulnerability? they know they know what it's not going away. he's, he's not going to age backward. this isn't benjamin button here. it's biden only i think all of us could use but yes. when is well taken and talk, we can put up the poll and on biden's fitness, right? >> so public confidence in biden's fitness for office kind of underscores this only 7% of americans are extremely confident in his mental fitness for office. 45% say they're not at all confident right exactly. you know, what they want more. they want more scenes like state of the union, not what's being described in some of these behind closed doors, but again, this is something that's not going away. all they can do is present him as a strong position as they as they possibly can. write? well. and this is part of why the debates are likely to are totally potentially matter so much right here ferry two astronauts to the international space station was scrubbed just four minutes before liftoff because of a computer issue, nasa currently relies on spacex for its trips to the iss. if successful, starliner could be a major boost for the space agency and boeing, nasa chief bill nelson recently spoke to npr about the importance of test flights spaceflight is risky. that's why this launch of the boeing starliner it's a test flight the two astronauts our test pilots if everything works well then the next one will be the starting of a cadence of four astronauts in the starliner. >> all right, joining me now is rocket scientist and former nasa space biologists keep counting. keith. good morning. thanks for being here so what's going on in terms of the launches here because obviously we've seen two of them scrubbed. i'm sure that there are americans out there. what we're thinking boeing now we got a lot of problems with boeing airplanes. why are we testing? think a boeing space craft? >> can you help people work through that? the name boeing is about the only similarity you have between the spacecraft and the rockets. it's a massively large company, two totally different groups people that said it's the first time that this capsule is going to take two people up. and the first time it went, it had big problems. the second time it did better when you fly people, you're really, really, really want to be sure that everything's going to work and then work and then work yes. >> yes, you do let's talk about where we stand kind of in general with our space program because we've also covered news here of china sending probes to the moon, the dark side of the moon, which is a first for humanity. >> and bill nelson, i talked about the sort of competition inherent in this. and what he doesn't want to see from the chinese. let's listen to that i don't want them to get to the south pole, which is a limited area that where we think the water i don't want them to get there and say this is ours. >> you stay out it ought to be for the international community, for scientific research so that's why i think it's important for us to get there first how do you react to what nelson is saying there and what are the risks for the us to what transmit doing? >> it's a little bit of cold warrior ish sort of speed. >> well, we want the rocket fuel, so we need to get there first. >> it's more than just rocket water. it's it's ice thick. you could turn into atmosphere debris, the rocket fuel it can eat, can study the early solar system, and it's a very large area. so the fact i don't think china is going to land there were troops and say stay out. that said, we're an observable post pre cold war era and hours either competition, it's actually collaboration, cooperation competition altogether with many nations in many companies again, i guess senator nelson has talking points, but the rest of the world really doesn't see it this way. everybody is actually excited that everybody is going to the moon interesting. >> so obviously these private companies that we are now working with, it's part of our overall strategy around the moon, around eventually potentially going to mars. a lot of what we do in the space program right now is driven by spacex and elon musk's spacex, they say that they could launch their mega rocket. it's called starship possibly tomorrow if they get to go ahead from the faa, you look like you're rolling your eyes like what's the deal with this interesting because you may have a split screen if they don't watch boeing today, that may have a split-screen. >> we have the little conventional rocket by the big aerospace company here that a monster new rocket by the silicon valley guy. and you we have that, but that said there are more than one way to do things. you take commuter jets to go from point a to b, you take big jets to go around the world and spaces become something now that it's not just one size fits all i'm just many different things to get need to be done many different ways. and the more ways you have to do things, whether it's a government rocket, a private sector one or one that you buy or rent the more options you have you can tolerate failures better if one fails, you've got other ways to do things. >> what starship, this massive rocket add to the mix. >> a lot. and i mean it metaphorically as well as you know, literally it has its first of all, they build these things like corn silos. >> if you see some of the shots down, then texas, they're just stacked up. okay. we blown up a fire. another one. >> they're doing the fire, it test it fire at tested thing. >> whereas nasa weights half a decade clinches their fingers saying, oh, my god, then launch. once these guides deliberately say, hey, if we lose some will get our answers quicker. but they're also cheaper and it's a consumer product. it's designed to be improved, it's designed to be made in quantity nasa doesn't build it's that way. that's the biggest difference. very interesting. >> so, you know, one of the astronauts that's possibly gonna be launched today. yeah. so it's only williams is a friend of mine. i made her dog famous number of years ago she's she's that he astronauts, astronaut, nice person. you ever want to meet does she think she's going to actually go up to space today? >> you know, it's sort of like they've been planning. it's sort of like, okay, we're not going again, it's sort of by the time you get going, they're probably more surprised that they're going then they're not it's okay. now what's the next to? while he's cool. >> all right. fair enough. that's great. we're going to be watching closely to see whether then at that they can actually take off today keith. thank you. i really appreciate your time. >> all right. >> time for it today after touting her role in helping grow women's basketball, wnba rookie angel reese received her first objection from a game. carolyn mano has this morning police report. carolyn, good morning. >> good morning. fascinating discussion there in the sports world. we know that the wnba is skyrocketing. i mean, yesterday we told you about how angel to reset that she is actually comfortable with taking the bad guy role in her rivalry with caitlin clark in last night, and exchange with the rest got her an early exit from the chicago sky is lost the new york liberty, this happened late in the fourth quarter. reese was called for her fifth personal foul and the rookie appeared to say something to referee charles watson, and then quickly waved her hand and she was then called for too technical fouls and her first rejection as a pro afterwards, the lead official said that her texts or for disrespectfully addressing the official and then for waving her hand in dismissal her coach and teammates. we're still looking for answers i tried to get an explanation. >> i did not no to this moment what has happened she got to tag she told that sentiment there. >> so whatever he felt like was the. correct call is what he made. it's more about composure for us in our young years in the wnba. so get to know refs and how they respond to things the ejection caught the attention of bowls guard lorenzo ball, he posted on social media that he thought the ejection was quote, week he offered to pay are fine saying keep your money, angel. >> i got you 16-year-old villi johann please. how did they view to remember for the us women's national soccer team? how about this? just nine minutes into her first appearance, she scored her first international goal with the three mill win over south korea yeah, that makes her the third youngest goalscorer in us women's team history and the youngest in 30 years jim comes to really, i think i mean, i played this scenario out of my head, like, how many times before this game, before yeah, just having an idea of like coming on and scoring. >> yeah. that
